RTA = Real Time Attack. In short it means you start timing when you gain control of your character, and stop timing when you lose control. So from when Scrooge appears on the money bin to when he lands on the last platform of the escape. It doesn't really matter what you use to record, but I use WSplit so I can keep track of how good/bad each level is compared to my PB. It also shows up on my stream so...yeah.

@Radman: I don't mean to sound stupid, but what does PB stand for? So would I have to stop the chronograph between beating every level, starting every level, and during the loading and cutscenes?

Wsplit allows you to do as many segments as you need. The segments are like "checkpoints", which capture and show your time when you press the checkpoint button.

For example:
1) Start the timer when Scrooge appears in moneybin
2) Hit the checkpoint button when you skip the cutscene after beating Big Time Beagle
3) Hit the checkpoint button when the "Stage Clear"-screen fades out.
4) Repeat #3 for the rest of the stages
5) Stop the timer when you reach the highest platform in the lava climb.

With a chronograph, you should simply do steps #1 and #5 to get the most reliable results.

PB = Personal Best.
I had a couple of good runs on the way today again. One ended after 14 Beagle Boys on the Plane, the second one crashed just after beating Mine Boss, right when the screen was fading out, and then the rest got eaten by the Mine Glitch. I feel I have 33:35 in me, and will probably aim for that before giving up. Don't know if I'll be giving up this game altogether after that, or only Easy mode.

Yeah don't give up until you at least try doing Extreme runs. It's a whole other beast. X3

Navat0 and I were talking last night and wondering what the main differences were between Hard and Extreme, aside from default Hard Pogo. Turns out there are different spawn placements on death skips?
For Fun! For GLORY!!
I think so. Extreme barely has any checkpoints, which both work for and against you. I'm fairly certain there are no checkpoints at all in Vesuvius until Dracula.
Hard isn't even that hard. Cakes become lives, so if there's a spot to heal up, you can grab an extra life quickly.
Okay, just in case anybody missed my post and questions on the other page:
Greetings everybody! I slipped to third for awhile, but retook my 2nd place slot back with authority. I used an alternate profile and finished with an in-game time of 34:07 on easy. I was able to complete a pretty good, but not elite mine glitch, two extra beagles, bad yeti luck, two bats on dracula with two and three bite fangs respectively. I missed one jump on splinter and two jumps on the amazon boss. One thing I'm skeptical about is other difficulty levels registering your time other than easy. For example, I complete my first run on hard difficulty on my alternate profile and my time is nowhere to be found. Afterwards, I complete a run on easy and my time is seen on the leaderboard at 9th place. Furthermore, I have completed at least two solid runs on extreme on my first profile and the times did either did not register or I just didn't beat my in-game time of 34:41. However, all things being equal, wouldn't even not totally perfect runs on extreme be able to beat an in-game time of 34:41 considering the Translyvania death skip. I did get two gyro bonus games on one of my runs( not sure if the timer goes during this), but I completed a solid mine skip and didn't have terrible plane luck. Could somebody enlighten my on the subject if every difficulty registers the time? One last question: could somebody please explain to me exactly what RTA stands for, means and how you record it? For example, would using a watch chronograph to record the run from the beginning til the newspaper shows at the end?
OOps! I didn't realize blue would be difficult to read! To make it simple, do other difficulty levels besides easy register on the leaderboards? I beat hard on an alternate profile and the time didn't register, yet I do it on easy and place 9th. Plus, I completed at least two solid runs on extreme on my original profile and did not pass my in-game time of 34:41. Any thoughts?

yes, different difficulties do show up on the leaderboards, but only if you beat the time you have posted. It's a bad system, but that's how it works. As for your forum troubles, if you log in instead of posting as a guest you will be able to edit your posts and you will not have to triple post and blind us with color.

Now for my own progress. I have been transitioning over to Wii U since it seems to be the easiest way to avoid running into adjustment trouble when ADGQ comes around. Playing on the gamepad will be the same no matter what TV you are playing with and you won't have to worry about "home PC advantage." Earlier today I managed to get a 40:21 RTA, 35:48 in-game which is 2:10 slower than my PC time in both RTA and in-game. Sub-40 RTA should be coming shortly.

@mashystrr: If this is the case, why was my time nowhere to be found on the leaderboards when I completed a run on hard difficulty for my very first run on an alternate profile? Also, considering how much time the translyvania skip saves on extreme, wouldn't my solid runs on extreme at least have beaten my in-game time of 34:41 considering I completed a solid mine glitch plus not terrible plane luck. Another note, I did another run and ended ended with a personal best of a 34:01 in-game time. That is only 14 seconds away from first place. What do you call yourself on the leaderboards?
For Fun! For GLORY!!
Wait, are we still on the 'in game timer' argument? I thought we agreed that IGT was unreliable and innacurate, and that we should keep focus on real time. I also found it dumb Guru that you made a seperate name just to put a time for extreme on the leaderboard. Sure, the times should be seperate, but for IGT, who cares?

@Radman: I believe Timber said he would make a separate user name when he does extreme to separate the times as well. And what do you mean in-game times don't matter? Comparing across different platforms sure, but comparing Wii U vs. Wii U in-game times should be relevant, shouldn't they? Otherwise you are saying that Timber's time at 1st place doesn't mean a thing. In addition, nothing was being argued about in-game times, but whether all the difficulties register the times on the leaderboards. Why would a run on hard not be registered on the leaderboards, but a run on easy did? Furthermore, I don't think I have the right equipment that I would be able to find out RTA, so what else could I go by? If your determined enough, I bet you could at least place in the elite top five on the leaderboards. Best of luck! thumbsup

I could too if I grinded on easy some more, but I'm practicing extreme in case I have to run it on that difficulty at AGDQ. And you can use pretty much any timer to time RTA. I think somewhere on SDA is a download for WSplit that you can download on your PC.
And in game times can be manipulated. If you go back into a completed game and do a specific level faster then before, it improves your time. So some of those numbers aren't reliable.

@Radman: I still don't quite understand how times can be manipulated, but rest assured, I honestly do my runs straight through and earn what I get. Unfortunately there are those hackers that come along every once in awhile. I actually have practiced speed running on both easy and extreme and have gotten very good at both. I completed at least two solid runs on extreme, but with getting one extra heart container in the process. What I find to be a pain on extreme is the amazon world and boss. The boss jumps very unpredictably and there is little health to work with. What is ADGQ and how would I become a part of it?
I admit I mention IGT and aim at certain times IGT. But I also clock the RTA, and for me they always seem to go hand in hand, and I am aware of that RTA is the only time considered at SDA.

For me, on the Wii U, 37:47 (RTA) == 33:47 (IGT), and each second I've earned historically on the RTA, is also reflected by one second disappearing on the IGT.

For friends, I only claim the IGT, since that's what they see. In this community, it's RTA that matters. If you have a video of IGT before and after the run, you may claim that time, other than that, it's useless, since segmenting is possible (even with penalty seconds). However, it will still not matter in this forum.

@rTiimber: So in other words, my (IGT) time of 34:01 on the Wii U= 38:01 (RTA)? Would timing with my watch chronograph from the beginning of the money bin level to the final platform in Mount Vesuvius work as an (RTA)?

I have no idea on the relation between them for you. For me, on easy, it seems to be like this. It all depends on how quick you skip cutscenes, if you get extra lag (which isn't that normal on Wii U), and probably a couple of more factors.

Start your own timer and try it out, it's as easy as that. Or record the video of you playing and measure afterwards.

Awesome Games Done Quick. The charity marathon SDA holds each year. Speedrunners from all over gather to run games for a good cause. I offered Remastered for the marathon but Mike still hasn't decided who's gonna run it yet. You can still register and come show your support in person. :3
Had one run today that challenged my PB. I was 3s faster up until Dracula, but got three patterns of bats for my second full run in a row, and ended on 38:06. What's the odds of getting this pattern two runs in a row? Before this, I've never got it earlier. Guess it wasn't my day today, either.

Best race ever! But I'm sure he's narrowed it down. I think there's only 3 people still serious about running it, and I'm the only one who's offered incentives thus far for the run.
Visually Appealing
Well, I offered Extreme and soundtrack choice in my original pitch for the game, but I hadn't seen the Incentives thread until now.

I haven't had much progress made lately, but soon I'll be grinding real hard. Still on extreme exclusively. I wouldn't be surprised if the runner is chosen a mere month before the marathon. We should perhaps race on SRL regularly to help that.
For Fun! For GLORY!!
I thought we agreed that races would be unreliable for the most part because of the massive RNG in the game. Even so, if we raced Extreme, I would concede to you anyway Satoryu. Tongue
The only reason I'm learning a route for Extreme is for the marathon anyway, and it takes all kinds of safety strats.
