Wow Mauste, you've been puttin in work. I'm surprised Extreme is legit faster. Still not gonna do it though, since you have to be perfect, and going for safety measures and being careful just eats time.

Heheh yeah, but someone had to do it

Just got 33:49 in-game from my first extreme run, that's definitely faster. Made a bunch of mistakes as well.
That's what I have been telling people, sub 33 IGT is definitely possible on Extreme It's a shame the IGT is buggy for me though
I finally managed to get the last part from Vesuvius (boulders) and even with the quick cycle on Easy, extreme is faster (~0.5 seconds, since I forgot to Pogo Jump on extreme to the chain). This is because on extreme the boulders that "roll down towards you" move faster on extreme.
So, the mystery is solved. Extreme is ~47.5 seconds faster than Easy even though you do not have Magic Coins (well lets round it up to ~50 seconds) Now that I have finally done with the comparison, maybe I can shift my focus back to actual speedrunning

Haha! I thought so and said it the first day it came out. Glad to see it proven, though. Extreme is the real way to play this game.
Note: I have yet to beat the game on extreme. I'm sure I could, but I haven't really given it a shot. When testing it, I mostly played on easy. But I had the most fun testing my bos fights and the ending sequence on extreme.
Indeed it is The higher the risk, the higher the reward
If someone has been speedrunning the game on Easy and wants to get into Extreme speedrunning, I would suggest picking up the extra heart containers in Himalayas and Transylvania. One could also consider picking up the extra lives in Moneybin, Amazon and African Mines. This way there's still have room for mistakes (5 hits instead of 6) and with some checkpoint-luck deaths aren't that costly either. After time, just gradually decrease the amount of those "useless item" pick-ups.
The Extreme route isn't any different from Easy route. The biggest difference is in Amazon, where you pickup the two coins from the tunnel and then kill yourself and go the top route. The second difference is the deathskip in Transylvania after the 3rd miniboss. Other than that, the route is pretty much the same.
I did a run just now, which was ruined by bad luck. I got 8x beagles in a row during the Glomgold's plane at one point and the others were 2:1 and 3:1 favoring the beagles. I really wish this could get changed to be more consistent (for example, it could always drop 7-8 beagles and 5 bombs). Same with the bosses, couldn't they always do the same amount of the attacks (for example dracula: 2x bats, 2x giants, 2x dragons or Magica: 5x flares, 4x stones), but the order would be random like during the Terra Firmie King? I think this would be a more consistent solution and a huge improvement for speedrunning.
Mauste, tomorrow on IRC I need to talk to you more about the route. I'm gonna stream Extreme runs that day and I could use a hand. :3
Only if you wait a bit longer before quitting. I can't really answer if I am in middle of a run (unless I'm riding the helicopter or looking at a Stage Clear-screen)
I just wanted to applaud all of you hardcore speed runners for your excellent dedication to figuring out all of this useful information. Whatever the case, I look forward to the competition by you awesome rivals. I am still trying to better my time on easy and hope to eventually speed run on extreme.
I'll keep on running Easy for a while more. I still need to shave off another ~10s.
I've been really sick for the last day now, so I've slept 30 out of the last 32 hours. But expect more Easy Wii U records soon.
I've only played through Extreme a few times, but will definitely see if I can learn hard pogo to tackle that one as well. Thanks Mauste for all the comparisons and routing - that's hell of a job!
Just got a 33:23! With two bonus stages, but thankfully they don't count towards the in-game time (Right?)
Some people have gotten IGT Personal Bests with bonus stages, so either they don't count, or the players have simply improved significantly at other parts of their run. To be on the safe side, you should try to avoid the bonus stages. Not to mention bonus stages always add to your real time, which seems to be the standard for this game
On Extreme, your treasures' values are multiplied by 1.5x at the end of the stage, so be sure to check your total money after every stage and calculate the multiplier in your head during the stage (For example 100k collected during the stage = +150k total money after the stage, and so on).
Ice cream locations for extreme: (basically you only want to get the minecart ice creams, others will cost you time)
Moneybin: 1) Magic Coin box
Amazon: 1) Magic Coin box (on the top-route) 2) Hidden on a platform during the helicopter ride 3) Hidden Magic Coin location 4) The highest chest before the boss room.
African Mines: 1) Magic Coin box 2) Minecart route 3) Hidden in air right at the end of the stage (jump straight up on the rightside of the "wooden pilar").
Himalayas: 1) Magic Coin ice cube 2) Hidden Magic Coin location 3) Hidden in air right before the boss
The time you spend in bonus stages does appear in your total playtime, so it would be safe to assume that they count Also congrats Drake on your new PB!

Correct. IGT doesn't count bonus or loading. It's happened to me once or twice and I still got better IGTs than my previous runs without them. As far as RTA goes, it's a run-killer.
Bonus game, killing urns since August 2013. I need to math to find out what I need my money to be at parts of the stage to avoid 7s. And streaming in 15 minutes.

The amount changes for each playthrough, so you can't really "find out" before-hand. I mean you will spend time if you try to pickup a certain amount always.
In my opinion this is the fastest: - 0$ in Moneybin, the moon and amazon. - In Himalayas, during the bubba-route, you can choose to end up with either 50 or 60k (without adding time to your run). However, you can also take the extra ruby near the end if it looks like you are going to end up at a 7 (the ruby adds ~1-2 seconds to the run). - In Transylvania, I usually aim at 400k (= basically +0$). However, this requires one extra ruby, which costs ~1-2 seconds to pick up (the one before the boss). The rest you get during the minecart-ride. - In African Mines, I just hope I don't go over the limit (because I never check my total money in the gallery before starting the run).
I watched your stream and I noticed you said that Magica's pattern is faster on Extreme, because you were used to Easy. On my earlier findings (without video), I concluded that only the Terra Firmie King is faster and the rest of the boss battles are around the same speed. However, because of your "complaint", I am thinking maybe I should compare the bosses one more time (with video). I will try to do the comparison tonight. Who knows, maybe Extreme will break the 1 minute mark
I believe that even with your safety strategies on Extreme, your time will likely improve (or at the very least it will be very near to your Easy time). I don't think collecting the hearts and the lives will amount to ~40-50 seconds
I have now completed Big Time Eagle and Magica De Spell comparison. It took longer than I expected, so I will do the rest tomorrow.
Big Time Beagle: Basically no difference at all. What little difference there is can be blamed on my gameplay.
I decided to compare Magica in segments. Basically the only notable differences were in the 3rd section stone platform-attack and in the vulture's dive. The 3rd section stone was 20 frames faster on Extreme (0.6 seconds) and the dive was around ~5 frames. The rest of the attacks had ~2 frames of difference. My conclusion is that this boss can be beaten faster on both Easy and Extreme. It simply depends on your luck with the mirrors and Magica's spawn location.
