That didn't take long, lol.

I may try my customary 100% run, but this game is so large that it may take a while.

What difficulty was that done on?  Was it a pure speedrun or was he going for no alerts/kills etc..?  How fast does he think the game can be beaten?
going for pure speed in MGS is a lot more fun imo than going for rank.

Generally MGS speedruns are either normal mode pure speed runs or Extreme mode "Big Boss" rank run; just wondering which he was going for.

I'm playing through the game again to watch the cutscenes; I want to get more flashbacks so I can max out the bonus drebin you get for that category (still need 3 more weapons to max out that category; 2 are unlocked by getting the best rank on hard and extreme and I don't know what the other one I'm missing is).  Drebin points are useless as there's nothing I need to buy but ammo and I already have nearly 2 million DP; just want to look at all maxed points at the end of each Act just for the heck of it.:-p
I love SDA!
Well whoever does this speedrun much luck to you, I watched my friend play through it twice in the same weekend, and loved every minute of it. I wish I could give some hints but I haven't even played the game just watched my friend play. But Goodluck to who runs it
Finally finished the game (work kinda got in the way of me finishing it sooner).

I have...some idea of a few ways to run it...but probably can't do it myself.

Actually, knowing Take-Chan and the MGS 3 runs he's given us, I wouldn't doubt this time for a second.

I just started my own speedrun of this game; I'm just curious to see how quickly I can beat it.  I'm playing on Normal mode, no special items used, don't care about rank.

Right now I've just finished Act 2 and my total play time is 54 minutes and 54 seconds.  I plan on redoing the last part of Act 2 a few more times (the boss fight with octopus up through the end of the act; the boss fight I had was really slow and everything after that fight was a bit sucky too).  I should be able to shave off a few more minutes before heading into Act 3 (getting under 50 minutes would be great but I'm not sure how quickly I can finish the boss fight...I plan on experimenting with a variety of weapons).
Tonight at the hookah bar, someone gave me the greatest idea ever: A run of the game using only the Mantis Doll where applicable. The Mantis Doll is fucking hilarious XD

The Mantis Doll is like the Rocket Launcher from Resident Evil.

But I think the best place to focus efforts on is the bosses, for now anyway. Someone has already offered what sounds like a great strategy for Crying Wolf. Anyone want to try and find a concrete one for Raging Raven? Wink

種子島はあなたのクリスマスはめつさせる...

Uhm... yeah, I hope I typed that right. I don't have the hang of verbs. I meant to say "Tanegashima ruins your Christmas". =p

More to the point, the Tanegashima will fuck your shit up moreso than the Mantis Doll.

My final stats for my half arsed speedrun (hey I only spent a few hours working on it after all).:-p

Difficulty: Solid Normal
Total Play Time: 2:30:55
Continues: 0
Alert Phases: 28
Kills: 176
Recovery Items Used: 13
Weapon Types procured: 66
Flashbacks Watched: 254
Special Items Used: None

Confer the title of "Raven"

I was so close to breaking the 2:30 mark but I just didn't try hard enough.:-p  Obviously a sub 2:30 is possible for MGS4 on solid normal mode; given that my run had plenty of mistakes and I didn't exactly perfect any boss fights I'd say that this game can possibly be done in under 2:15.

EDIT: I'd just like to point out that I saved my game after the fight with Ocelot at the end (before the epilogue) and my time there was 2:14:34.  Just goes to show that between "finishing" the game and reaching the final rank screen over 15 minutes passes between skipping the end cutscenes and sitting through the unskippable credits.  Now that's a huge pain in the ass.:-p
holy damn, dude

Was this with or without saves?

It was with saves but the only time I redid a segment was at the end of act 2 where I wanted to better my fight against octopus (initial strategy was very slow).  Other than that I saved only when the screen prompted me too and never actually reloaded at any other point in the game.  I imagine, if I was dedicated enough, I could multi-segment a sub 2:15 and may even be able to single-segment a sub 2:30.
Hey there was stealth camo in that video. How do I get stealth camo? I want stealth camo.

You can buy it from Drebin after you beat the game.
Really? Does it matter what difficulty? (I'll probably never get past Solid Normal)

Cool.

If you buy it from Drebin it costs 5,000,000 points (2,500,000 if you wait for the Act 5 half off sale).  You can get it for free by beating the game with no alerts (you get the bandana for beating the game with no kills).

Is it possible to start a new game on Extreme, without carrying over the camo/items from previous playthroughs?

Yes just start a new game without loading a previously finished game.  As long as a previously finished game is on file then the Extreme difficulty is unlocked.

I'm starting my own game on Extreme now for the Big Boss rank...damn enemies have the eyes of hawks.:-p

EDIT: I should add that starting a new game on extreme will be quite difficult if you plan on going for a big boss rank; you cannot purchase any non-lethal weaponry from Drebin.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
I've finished Act 1 of my extreme mode big boss run; total time was 44:27.  Considering my time for my normal mode 2:30 run at this point was approx. 26:55 I'd say there's no way in hell of me doing this in a good time.  All I'm hoping for is under 3:30 (or if I'm lucky under 3:15).  I'll leave the sub 3 hour (or sub 2:45) big boss runs to the real MGS players.:-p

I figured it was tied to the System Data save file, not the game file data.

Details, details... But you're quite right, it is. Either way, beat the game, you're going to have both.
Now here's something I discovered, by accident (but I'm sure it's listed somewhere).

If you were helping the rebels (resistance) in your last playthrough, when you play again they say things like "you again. Go". and they pretty much leave you alone. Could help in a run, but would probably fall under NG+ or something.

It would probably be the same if you helped the PMCs instead, which might be more beneficial, since they seem to be winning most of the time.

Still, something that could help.
Someone put his playthrough for the Big Boss emblem on Youtube : http://fr.youtube.com/user/TyndelM

It's in 17 parts and can give some ideas for the routes to follow, the strategies to use, etc etc.

His final time is 3h14'50'' and this time can be improved as he made some mistakes  Wink
