Thread title:
I'm still only half-way through (and I already saw this thread coming), but...and I mentioned this before, the official strategy guide actually gives you speedrun tips and routs.

Now I'm sure people will come up with their own way of doing things, but its just a helpful tip.

Oh, and thanks for clarifying what you meant in the thread title. If you didn't mention it was the game you were referring to I might have mistaken it for the MGS4 rock opera.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
This is definately one of the best games I've ever played.

I picked the game up at the midnight launch at gamestop and as soon as I got home played it straight through in a single sitting (no sleep); took me from around 1 a.m. - 6 p.m. to finish.:-p  So far I've completed the game 3 times and it's still fun.:-D
Just call me the cynicism machine
I can't wait to see you speed run through mandatory end of chapter installs and 45 minute long cutscenes!

Can't avoid the installs but for cutscenes just hit the start button.;-)

I imagine Act 3 will frustrate anyone trying to speedrun this game...there's just nothing you can do but wait for the guy to reach the resistance.:-p

long loadtimes...chapter installs ..damn!>__>

God damn dude, addicted much? 0_0

I picked up the game yesterday, but didn't get the chance to play it for the next 6 hours because of a huge long chain of events that totally pissed me off.

My car overheated, when I went to the Taco Bell drive through to buy a Frutista, promptly after buying the game. Called my old man, who is a mechanic, then he told me to find the nearest garden hose and refill my radiator, but warned me about pressure buildup ripping apart my pretty little face after twisting the radiator cap open. I found the nearest garden hose alright... At a little auto repair shop a few blocks away.

My inexperience with vehicles + worry about having to be sent to the hospital after getting burned by steam + the fact that I was at an auto repair shop = 2+2 = "Fuck that, man! Get one of these guys to do it!"

They filled it up, but then told me there was something wrong with my thermostat (at least that's what I think they said). I was offered a fix, if I'd wait for an hour. I accepted, reluctantly. Then my old man calls again and says [overdramatized for your entertainment]

"Call a wrecker and take it down to Crawfordville, then take my van back up to town! These guys are only going to jerk you around!"

"Dad, I already looked at that possibility but I don't want to waste any more ti-"

"JUST CALL THE FUCKING WRECKER! IF THEY FIX ONE PROBLEM, THEY'RE ONLY GOING TO COME UP WITH ANOTHER AND YOU'RE FUCKED!"

"Jesus Christ, alright, alright..."

"O hai weer teh reckr srvce, our nxt availolble guy iz theer in n' hour and thirty minutes."

Oh, I waited an hour and thirty minutes alright. Then two hours. Then THREE HOURS. Then after the wrecker finally got his ass over there, he loaded my car up, and let me bum a cigarette off of him. I then proceeded to wait another 45 minutes to get to my dad's house in Crawfordville, due to traffic (for some reason Tallahassee was a bit more populated than usual yesterday) + the fact that Crawfordville happens to be 30 miles away from Tallahassee. Sanity Points -50. I hate wasting time with a passion.

Once I got back to Crawfordville, I realized that I had lost my credit card, and thus had to pay the guy with the remaining cash in my wallet, leaving me flat broke outside of what little money I had left in my bank account. Had to cancel the card the moment I stepped through the door as well... another 30 minutes of my time lost, waiting to speak to the next available operator, and continuing to play telephone tag with my dad.

Back up to Tallahassee. Another hour spent watching a hookah for my friend while he put his quadriplegics in bed. Then finally, another 5 minutes back home, straight to my PS3 and MGS4.

tl;dr? Gogo Friday the 13th.

And just think while you were going through all that I was sitting at home, all comfortable, playing the hell out of one of the best games ever!:-D

I don't think this game is very speedrunner friendly and it's very long for a MGS game (the cutoff for getting the best ranks is a sub 5 hour) so anyone looking to tackle this game...have fun.

Well, for a game that sounds like it takes about 20 hours for the casual player to finish, we could expect a run to be around 3 hours. Quite possibly even less.

I'm about 6 hours in, after Act 2, Normal difficulty.

Laughing Octopus was pretty easy. I just hid under one of the beds and kept firing at her feet. The part where she runs around trying to grab me was pretty freaky. It was especially freaky when she started crawling under the bed, but shooting her while she's crawling at you under the bed appears to be the quickest way to kill her.

I had hoped this topic wouldn't show up for some time. I've completed the game a few times not on Extreme as yet though. And its true that in parts it doesn't lend itself to speedrunning, however one difference between this game compared to the others is that Codec calls are totally skippable, and many cut-scenes too, making it more play oriented thn sitting and skipping through various scenes and calls. i had hoped they would'nt make the game like this, Getting thru various parts of the game is very difficult with MK22 or Mosin Nagat only. Some scenes the alert doesn't show up when fighting numerous gaurds which helps. Also Not too sure but from MGS history I would think every boss can be killed, once they return to human form then they should be knocked out, quickest way is throwing Stun G's at their feet.

Having just started the game on Extreme it is really difficult as many previous tools can't be used. The shoot roll is allmost all but useless, the guard hearing doesn't allow a clean run and slam like MGS3 and the gaurd's sense of hearing when snake is running (not crouch running) is freakily good. i would still think with all the skipping that can be done and with wise Chaff collection a sub 3 hour is more than on, i would say closer to maybe 2:30 or even less.

But I don't plan on touching this game is terms of speedrunning yet, just wanna play thorugh many many times...slowly.... :-)

I'd be very surprised to see a 2:30 run done on this game; Act 3 takes about 35 minutes excluding the boss fight with which you cannot save time (and on hard and extreme the bastard takes a longer route to the resistance pushing it closer to 40 minutes between that and the motorcycle battle leading up to the boss fight).  I'm also not sure if the install times between acts count though you can count that the 7 minutes of ending credits do.:-p  (not exactly sure how long the credits are but they are friggin long and unskippable).  But then again who knows what kinds of tricks people will come up with in this game; time will tell.
So wait, the game has to install stuff EVERY time you reach a new act of the game?

Yeah there's roughly 2-3 minutes of installing between each and every act each and every time you play the game.  Still worth it.:-p
It'll make a single-segment run nigh impossible. =X

almost 9 hours in after act 3.

Yeah, I know how you feel. I kinda feel guilty about that too.

Oh wait, I'm over it.

Okay... How the fuck do I inject vamp with the nanomachines? What buttons do I press, seriously? I've tried every button on the fucking controller and I can't grab him, throw him down, etc.

EDIT: I've managed to throw him down and I kept mashing triangle with my syringe equipped, and it STILL didn't work. I'm ripping my hair out in frustration about how vague the game is being. CQC is the most useless gimmick in this game, ever. The fact that the designers (or Kojima) made it so you *have* to use it and were very vague in their explaination on how to use it is a very bad choice. "OMG USE CQC LOL!"

DOUBLE EDIT: Nevermind, figured it out after a fucking hour of trying. Hold R1 behind him at the right time, equip the syringe, hit Triangle. Will take several tries.

Just completed it.

I'd personally like to see how long it would've been without cutscenes <_<

As far as gameplay goes, the game was... alright. Perhaps I'll appreciate it more with replay value. The storyline seemed to work on a bunch of technicalities left out of dialog in other games, a huge bunch of sudden what-the-fuck plot twists, and (my favorite) "JESUS CHRIST THEIR BODIES ARE SUPPOSED TO BE MANGLED! HOW ARE THEY STILL ALIVE AND IN NEAR-PERFECT CONDITION SEVERAL LONG CUTSCENES LATER?!"

Prolly play through it a few times more later.

On the whole, though, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Big dumb ol' fun. XD

Just started and completed the game with my mate in one sitting.

Took us just under 18 hours with watching everything.

WOW at how annoying following that resistance guy was.

This game is a masterpiece and i can't see anything even coming close to its god like characteristics.
more keys then pablo escobar
i can think 1 thing.

After about 20 minutes of me trying to tranq-kill Vamp (using air rounds in the shotgun attachment to the M4 Custom), I finally got what he was saying about nanomachines. It only took me one try to CQC grab him and hit him with the syringe.

So is there a EuroExtreme option on European versions of the game? I obviously own the NTSC version, and it'd be a shame if it weren't there for us when they eventually release the Substance/Subsistance version later on down the road (which damn well better have a Demo Theater).

I wonder if how easy Vamp is to grab successfully depends on how much life you take off him before you attempt the injection.

I took his life down once and successfuly got him on my 6th attempt. When i took his life down twice it was more like on the 2nd try.

I suppose the best time to try is when he regenerates and is still for a few seconds.

Taking his life down twice is an understatement for my playthrough. Once it got to the point where I could just hit him in the head to knock him out, he couldn't do jack to me. So I brought his health down upwards of 25 times before injecting him.

Granted, CQC moves have always been pretty easy to pull off for me, so maybe that had something to do with it. Whenever I play through that point again, I'll try to CQC grab him without knocking him out at all.

I can't wait to see take-chan speedruning MGS4 :-D
The Wii kicks ass.
Well, while lurking around GameFAQS, I found this picture. http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/6264/dscf0009pq6.jpg
So, sub-4 hours is definitely possible. Also, it was done on the European version.
Hi I'm new here and I am very interested in seeing a run of this game. I can give a few ideas although I don't know if they will be of any help.

The Crying Wolf battle can be finished rather quickly if you get to the top of the tower with the sniper rifle. If you get lucky she will spot you and get ready to fire her wepon. If you shoot her fasy enough she'll stop move over a little and you can continue to do this untill she is dead. Ofcourse this can take a lot of luck.

Thanks for your time, hope you find this usefull and good luck with the run.
