I'm Method1cal on twitch/justin as well. Youtube is the only place I still use Overlord76. Not very familiar with 2, but congrats on your time. =)

Games!
Enjoyed watching runs of 6 and 5. I should do one of 2 sometime, now that the route is mostly done. Did a full run of it (on emulator) and ended with a game time of 3:16. Pretty terrible run too, so I'm thinking sub 3 is more attainable than I first thought.

just( •_•)>⌐■-■ ..... (⌐■_■)wing it
I've been following mmbn speedrunning the past few days and this looks like fun.  To make things easier I guess join #mmbn on srl's irc server so communication can be faster and simpler.  I'd like to run MMBN 4 red sun Japanese (something bout J exclusive mechanic) , MMBN5 Team Protoman , and MMBN 6 cybeast gregar.  though i can't do much except help routing till i get gameboy player for gcn.  I'll try to help in whatever way i can.

Wow, sounds like we'll have runs for all the games soon enough Smiley

I did a segmented run of my route for 2 and finished in just under 3 hours. Single segment was 3:33. It's getting better but I'm still not quite satisfied with the route.

Method1cal, you're overlord76 on justin.tv then?

And just to add my opinion: 2 > 6 > 3 > 5 > 1 > 4 (I pretty much hate 4)

4 was sooo annoying. Grammar was terrible, and it was so redundant. It didn't feel like a MMBN game. Good luck with MMBN2. That is a great game. I haven't given a run of it a try, but I was considering replaying the rest of the series to see if I have any interest in the other games (after I am satisfied with the first one). The first one is much shorter, but it is a bit frustrating with the lack of escape ability during battles.

Latest RTA of BN6 was 2:40:02, 1:38 in game timer. For anyone who didn't see it. Was an impressive run, with even more impressive chokes at the end. Lol.

Moving on to Battle Network 4 next. I don't want to do serious runs of 6 anymore until I have a capture card set up.

Congrats! That's a great improvement. I enjoyed watching it.

Finally hit my goal of sub 3! Now I just need to do it on console xD

Here it is: http://www.twitch.tv/tterraj42/c/2436910

We need some info on that BN1 page. I dont want to have a 3:25 anymore xD
Is that game time or real time? If that is your real time, then you've got me beat pretty hard at the moment. I had a really poor strat for SS RTA. I was stuck in segmented mode. Haha. I just revised my run strategy last night. I'm planning to run tomorrow if you want to watch. Should be a sub 3 real time if I'm reallly lucky. I had really poor planning this past week.

OH. And I get my capture card! So I can finally use my GameCube!

3:25 is actually both my in game time and my RTA time (first run lol). I dont think i have the recording anymore. But that time can easily be cut down to 2:50 with the route i use. I still want to discuss strats. I already know what HP memories, and powerups to grab. As far as chips go that's my issue. Is having your deck full of 5 escapes worth it? Also i dont know how to fit GutsShoot into the route.

I never really change my deck or remove the escapes for that matter. I mostly just add stuff to it
I revised my HP memory route, and I also have a new chip strategy as of now. Before, I was sort of rushing in and trying to sweep out everything quickly. In reality, I ended up dying and making dumb mistakes (not saving enough). I had a 2:33 game time, but a TERRIBLE real time. Ideally, my time can get down to sub 3 real time quite easily, but it is all dependent on the first 30 minutes of the run. I think this strategy caps out at around 2:30, which is fine, because RNG has to make up for a lot of time loss.

I've put together a strategy that requires GutShoot to be assembled mainly after IceMan, with at least 3-4 of each chip. Escapes are important for my new run, but they were less important before because of my chip route being less developed. It ultimately depends on the player. I should have planned this out earlier, but I was a bit excited to get something recorded and that ultimately made me think I would do fine with the Segmented strategy.
Accidental double post... Tongue

2:18:24! I think at around 2:05-2:10, it'll be unbelievably hard to break.
I know there is still an interest in this series, and at the moment, I think TeamBN is the most active group of BN runners...years after the series ends. Anyway, I managed to get this time on a SS RTA, and I was pretty much as happy as ever. Hopefully a challenger wishes to come along and try to take the record from me someday, but in the meantime, I think I will branch out to other MMBN games.

There is always a way.
Well, BN6 Gregar is down to 2:37:46. The route I used can probably sub 2:35 with better RNG but I'm exploring a major route change that will probably drop it to sub 2:30 territory. It also removes the only major reset point, so I'll only have to reset if the Diveman scenario is bad or I make a mistake.

I'll have a run of the new route as soon as possible but heres my most recent run for now.

Woooow!  Nice job Method1cal.  I'll have to check out that run at some point to get back into this.  Keep me posted on your stuff.  I'll try to drop in on your stream more often.

Of course. I've been working on a few cool things in the route that I really want to be faster, but it just seems like it isn't. They're safer, more consistent but even with my RNG in the 2:37 its faster to leave it as it is. It would help a lot in a 100% run though. Wink

Also do you think its a good idea to use in game time for BN6? There are no deaths in these runs anymore and the timer seems very accurate. I want to agree on a timing method though, since you also run this game.
aka forte27
I think we just need to make sure we know what in-game time refers to.  Is it faster because of the in-game clock, or is the timer actually turned off during some segments (pauses? navi summons?)  It's probably pretty safe to use in-game, since it's pretty consistent, and we're not resetting at all.

I think other games in the series that use something of a reset% category would need to use real time (i.e. MMBN1), but 6 should be able to stick with in-game.

I agree. The only time the in game timer is paused seems to be when we're skipping cutscenes, or maybe jack in animations. Removes the loading/black trasition screens and maybe on the save screen which we never access. It would be easy to spot someone trying to manipulate it, not that I think it's abusable anyway.

The other argument is using RTA for sake of consistency, since the other games mostly have points where you can die or it may be faster to reset.

Also 2:35:19 Gregar run. PB's don't last long these days I guess. This was with a 13 minute Blastman too, so I can save a minute on the first split. Dem no-reset runs.

...
After watching SGDQ2013, I decided I'd give speedrunning a shot. I figure that since I know a good deal about this series, I'd try doing some of the games. And since I'm apparently insane, I decided to start trying with Battle Network 2's Hard Mode.

For those who don't know, Hard Mode is unlocked by getting all five Title Screen stars in the normal game. You get one for beating the game, collecting all the normal Battle Chips, using every Program Advance, beating Bass in the secret area, and getting all ten secret chips, which are gained from Netbattling against another copy of the game. I would greatly recommend using an action replay or other cheat device to get the secret chips if you are planning to pursue this, unless you hate yourself like I do.

The problem I'm running into is damage output early in the game. In Hard Mode, enemies have 50% more HP and do 50% more damage, so the process is going to be quite a bit different than a normal mode run.

I'm honestly at a loss on how to be able to make an efficient path through the second scenario. I can use SneakRun through the Airconditioner Comp to get to AirMan just fine, but that means there's very little in the terms of damage output against the B License test, especially the 5th battle against the Handys. The thoughts I have at this point are to either grind early Guard and DashAttack chips, or to grind money and get PowerUps so I can strengthen the buster enough to compensate for the extra health.

I'll toy around with it some more when I get home from work tonight, but I'm just wondering if anybody has any thoughts on what to do here. Once I get a path down, I do plan on streaming runs of it. I'm sure there's a way to make Hard Mode work.

Don't worry. You're not that insane (or at least not any crazier than I am).  At some point, I'm planning to work up my MMBN2 carts to hard mode status too.  Unfortunately, that's not looking to happen any time soon, since I have a lot of work to get my MMBN6 running back up to speed.

If you haven't already, check out tterraj's run.  The HP jump is probably really rough, though, so you might not get much from it.  Still...grinding normally isn't the answer in my experience.
...
I did check out tterraj's run, and it's good for the basics of the run, but there are quite a few differences, such as the virus battles for the B-License. The first set has Handys for battle 5, the second set has Rattons in battles 2 and 3, a Yort in battle 4, etc. I thought I had a decent workaround by buying Widesword chips in the square to increase damage output for that segment, but it's not as effective as I'd like. I'm thinking that the best bet may be to farm GMDs in Den Area 2 or 3 a few times to get money for HP Memories/Power Up/Spreader chips. At the very least, it could be beneficial later on for being able to afford the chips for Gater.
i'd really like to see the mmbn games have any% before any other categories but you're obviously free to do what you wish.
Games!
Taoto, I never have played 2's Hard Mode. I'd be really interested in seeing a run. Once I finish with any% for 3 and 2, I wanted to look into 2 100% or Hard Mode. So I'll help any way I can. Don't be afraid to stream routing either, I'd watch it Smiley

grassini, all games have an any% run at this point. They can all be improved, sure, but they're all pretty good runs Smiley
