Rockman games are very difficult to run, and these are no exception.  Especially because almost everything is based on luck, for random encounters, etc...

Agreed, the snake strategy is very effective.  Even if it doesn't work that well, one of the N1 folders gives you a snake folder.

Snakes against Alpha?  That... I'm not sure of. You're stuck with 9 spaces, and to utilize snakes to the best of your ability, you lose only 6 spaces. So, 40 x 6 = 240, but even if you had a wood +30 (Dunno if you can get that) you'd do 70 x 6 = 420.  That's not helpful, plus you severly expose yourself.  I'd go against using a snake folder at the endstrategy.

Wood+30 comes in the snake folder, so I can order one for 5k, and if I bugfrag three bosses instead of two I come up with enough to buy a second when I go for fullcust.  I do have a geddon1 as well. Tongue
Mostly, I was worried about getting killed by Alpha while trying to hit him with varsword, so I figured I would do two varswords plus snakes or something.  Turns out that it isn't an issue (see edit to last post).

Snakes aren't entirely reliable when the boss has obstacles on their side, though.  I've had snakes that only hit a couple a times when fighting Bubbleman.  Doesn't seem like such a useful chip now, looking over the boss strategies and seeing it in none..

Edit for new stuff:
Thought there was a snake from one of the jobs Tora "persuades" Lan to do, it's actually in a locked data on Tamako's pc.  Might leave the snake R from Higsby in stash, because the folder is mostly D after I fix it up, and the snake here is D.  Need to come up with another 4k to buy an unlocker somewhere though.
Snake is still kind of useless until Alpha.. but now that I can get one before the zoo computer I might find some use for it in randoms.

Lifesword is awesome and greatly uncomplicates some of the bosses.  Notably, Desertman v1 dies in two and v2 dies to lifesword->masterstyle.
Double edit regarding Desertman - can't believe I overlooked this.  The second wave from varsword's slashwave is water element, so if I make the first wave miss, the second will stun him and the other two will connect.  From starting position, or any where there isn't a column in front of him, throw the slashwave from left of the hands so that they will take the first wave; otherwise stand on the grabbed panel and the interposing column will take the first wave.
(This strategy assumes a preset areagrab, which you use to take the center panel of his front row before attacking him, because otherwise it's random whether you can connect lifesword on him.)

Fullcust may be available as early as the Plantman scenario, but I haven't checked any earlier than the start of Flameman's.

Might have to look at the math for my strategy vs Alpha again.. varswords against a protected core weren't doing as much as I thought, and I needed to throw snakes or a lifesword or something to get him to <=900 HP.  I thought I saw airshot and shockwave break the core's protection in one hit, too, where lifesword did not.

Also have yet to check how much HP is needed to run away from encounters in specific areas.  Seems like running from anything in undernet is impossible given the available HP memory.
Didn't go out of my way to collect money, apart from job 7 where you fight twinners for 10k, and still had enough to buy all the stuff I wanted and then a few HP memories on the side later in the game.

That's about all of it, I think, except to connect the dots with the shortest lines. [In progress now.]

Well, the first test I did on console came to 5:19:xx, but I didn't have all the details worked for the route and had to backtrack a bunch, so I'm hoping to get the time below 5 hours depending on how the current test goes.  Lots of time to gain if I can find a way to buy some HP memories early in the game, I think.
Edit: test 2's clear time was 5:15:xx.

I'll post up the complete route when that's done, probably do one more test to decide on places to segment, and then start recording if nothing changes.

I once did a test run of MMBN2, which was just barely over 5 hours (5:05).

Well, whoever said powerups affect Megaman's chances to run in games where running is a feature and not a chip, they're correct - in testing, I determined that for each area in BN3, there is a specific HP value at or beyond which running will always succeed, regardless of the enemies encounter (bosses excluded).

Values are as follows, for most major areas (area - HP for 100% run success):
acdc 1 - 100 (!)
acdc 2 - 120
acdc 3 - 140
principal's pc - 140
scilab - 200
zoo network 1 - 200
beach - 300
hades - 360
hospital network - 380
undernet 1 - 400
undernet 2 - 440
undernet 3 - 480
undernet 4 - 500
undernet 5 - 540
WWW computers - 540

By manipulating one green data to give out 1k each time I went into the net, as well as collecting some blue data and from job 7 ("rare chips for cheap") I was able to buy a pile of HP memory and wasn't compelled to fight any randoms until very late in the game.  Mostly I intended to have enough to skip unneeded battles in Hades, because of how bad the folder is, but the effects were much more than I anticipated.
Endtime for this test: 3:56:xx.
Still some kinks to work out of the route, so I can have 540 HP to avoid fights in the WWW computers, but beyond that it should be ready to post tomorrow.

This is exciting to work on, too.  Grin  Sometimes, anyway.  Organizing and formatting the route after all the testing was pretty boring.

Very impressive work Cromarty! Still comprehending the route, so I can't critique it quite yet (not that my knowledge is that much any more). This run planning has quickly gotten to the ready to run point thanks to your hard work. SS is looking far more doable now, although the heavy luck manipulation could seperate the catagories by over an hour easily...

Hoping you make a great run soon! Who knows it could start interest in runs of the other 5...

MMBN3 was also one of my favorites. I remember one of the WWW machines being annoyinh because of the many grabbers in a row.
You needed to know the patern to make it trough without getting nabbed and thrown in the "jail".

MMBN3 advice: Either remember the maps, or download the maps from gamefaqs. They have a rar file with every map of the game, including info of BMD/PMD contents.

The WWW computers are terrible, especially the last stretch right before refighting Drillman with a line of eight or something.  At least I won't have to fight anything..

Recording is in progress now.
All of the luck manipulation looks nice on paper, but actually getting it to work is something else.  So far almost all my restarts are due to undesirable luck.  The worst part is having to constantly audit my play as I'm going, because of the single save.  I never want to run a single-save game in segments again. Sad

Anyway, I said I'd put up a boss or two, so here's Bubbleman:

Been itching to play a MMBN game again, so I plopped in Battle Chip Challenge. Too bad that one has ZERO speedrun potential. My kind of game; tell it what it should do, and let it run its own Cheesy

OMG, such a quick time with one of the most annoying bosses in the game o.o
I always hated Bubbleman and Drillman in this game (And Serenade in the Secret Area).
Damn Bubbleman V3 who only appears when your HP is critical >_>

I will eat my shoe if every boss from this Bubbleman to Alpha is so fast o.o

MMBN 3Blue has a vendor in ACDC 2 that sells Areagrab *
Aside from that, the Bolt chip you get from Higsby's machine, along with all the other Element-specific chips.

MMBN3 Blue is done now, right? ^^

5 and 6 are not an option, because they take too long and are too hard with no good chips. And 4.5 is bad because of all the backtracking you are forced to do...so count those out Cheesy
