I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Anyone up for a challenge?!
Thread title:
Cigar Man
I was just thinking about this game.  You're referring to the SNES version, right?  This game would make a fun-to-watch speedrun.
[Insert text here]
I remember playing this game as a kid, it was a pretty fun game. I no longer have a SNES and never did own the game, so if someone were to pick this up I would love to watch it.
Lost Vikings is a great game. There's a TAS run with 2 players which is interesting to watch. But seeing a real human being do it would definitely be better.

BTW, although the SNES/PC/GBA versions all look and sound better, the Genesis version is the best with 3 or 4 (can't remember) extra levels. It's quite nice with the 6 button controller.

Wouldn't that make it 2 different categories then, with more levels in the genesis version than SNES?

I used to play this a lot as a child, and just recently beat it. If someone does decide to start this, I will help as much as I can if they need help with some things. Fairly straightforward game, but a lot of the levels can be a huge pain in the ass going fast in.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
I've got Lost Vikings 1 and 2, and an SNES console. I will start doing some stage break downs and stuff, just not right yet. I wanted to see if there is a fan base for the game.....and there is!! Awesome! I'll post my progress when i begin. Hopefully others will begin too.

For Lost Vikings 2 (since you're doing the SNES version instead of the PSX/Saturn/PC Norse by Norsewest) might I suggest using the Vikings' new abilities that you can get at the beginning of the game if you die?

What do you mean by 'new abilities if i die' elbryan42? I haven't really played all of part 2, just know that there are more options and maneuverability with the characters, especially Erik the swift.

You have to kill Erik on the first level. Have Olaf have his shield up, and have Erik rocket jump (from on top of the sheild) straight up and land in the dip in the ground until you loose all his health. You'll get a message from Thor saying that if you died on such an easy level that you obviously need help. Just retry the level and you'll have new abilities for the Vikings.

Doing this will also give you a level skip (which would be useless in a speedrun, press A+B+X+Y), but the characters will have extra abilities: Fireball for Eric (down+Y), a jump for Baleog (up+B), an instant kill move for Olaf (X+Y+B), electrocution for Fang (tap Y, like Blanka!), and unlimited flying for Scorch.

I don't know if it would be considered cheating or not. Though I have Norse by Norsewest, the new moves make Lost Vikings II a great addition to my game collection. Tongue
I want off the ride....
I'd do a lost vikings run; but; that game frustrates me a lot; as I try to rush wayy to much for even speed runners at times... or i'm too slow.

It's the switching between characters so much that has kind of kept me from doing this game...

It just sucks that you can't really segment this game, unless using passwords to continue a game is allowed on SDA. I mean, they are usually put into two different categories anyway, aren't they?

Edit: If the new moves trick is allowed here, it would warrant a different category I'm sure. More of a glitch than cheating, too, really.
The passwords don't change your stats, because besides your starting characters, that's it.

It is. See the Toejam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron run for an example.

Ok, thanks. It made sense to me, I've just never watched that run since I knew nothing about it, or ever even heard of it until it was put on here...
everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
I wanted to say that Lost Vikings 1 + 2 are awesome and I would support and help out whoever wanted to run either of these.

But I think those special moves should definitely be disallowed since they're broken.
The moves are broken?

Broken is gamer-speak for overpoweringly good.

That's not actually a problem in itself; the fact that you have to death abuse and that these are basically cheats is. You can hit all the face buttons to level skip too.
I want off the ride....
Well I have a lost vikings copy here; and i'm just playing through it again; I forgot how easy some of the puzzles are; and If I made a little table; I probably could speed run it ok; but I'd segment based on Worlds as otherwise I think it'd be a biotch to perfect the whole game in a single segment for anyone...
just cause of the crazy-ness...
I've gotten a few levels down to a science; and I have teh mad dodge with erik;

(I know i was planning a Ninja warriors run; but no backing in that)

If anyone would like to help me or w/e
that'd be awesome
My feelings on The Demon Rush
The extra moves are definitely not allowed.  I might allow them if someone does a run of the game without them first.  In other words, treat it like a new game plus run.

RaneofSOTN:  I watched your Ninja Warriors WIP.  It was pretty good, but it looked like there were a couple of moves you didn't know about.

When you grab there are two other moves you can do.  Either press up+y (flip the enemy over your head) or down+y (hold y for more damage).  Also, there is a special combo finisher you can use when you have full meter.  Press up+y on your final combo hit, and you will perform an unblockable combo ender that does more damage than usual.

Sorry for going off-topic.
^^I think that would be fair.
There is no victory without combat
Yeah, I too thought about a Lost Vikings 1 run (Norse by Norwsewest was never a favorite of mine, the balance at the end is very bad, you go one step to far and the level is unbeatable, this sucks...), but I have only a DOS Version...so I started waiting for a Virtual Console Version...still waiting... .
Anyway, I too would support a run on Vikings 1, I begin thinking about useful hints.

The first I can think of is, when some cooldown effect is active (like Erik destroyed something with his head) than you still can switch the Vikings, which gives a bit of speeding up.
What is also useful, is the ability of Baelog (or Balog or how the fighting dude was named...) to destroy some incoming projectiles with his sword. Doesn't work on everything, but with this knowledge you don't need Olaf everytime in the first row.
Oh, and I don't know if this is a puzzle in the game, but when Erik stands on olafs Shield, you can move still with Olaf, although erik stands still. So if you go a bit with olaf, then again with erik, then again with olaf and so on, you can cover some space...don't know if it is useful for a run, but maybe you think of something.

If I remember any other stuff, I will bother ya with it... Grin
It's-a me, Raven!
*starts keeping an eye on this topic*
I want off the ride....
anyone know if its better to move them seperately or together (for time?)

Cause i'm trying to decide on levels where I can get erik to the end like lickety split if thats worth it, or to keep all 3 vikings close together...

the reason i ask this is cause then there is less time between character switches, screen moving and so on; but you move less distance overall; any thoughts?

You might want to just check on each level and see what vikings you need, and if Erik can get to the end and Beloeg(sp?) and Olaf go it alone. I remember encountering a good amount of levels like that. Then there are those levels that require them to split up which I hate.

Just write down on each level who is required and what you do to see if it is worth it or not. That's really the only way to plan for this type of game I think.

Edit: Well, a good plan would be to have Erik run as far as he can go, and then bring the other two behind him and complete the task that blocks Erik, then have him go further until stopped again by something, if there is anything left.
Well, let's bump this thread.
I was thinking about trying to run this (on GEN, which has 5 more lvls or something then SNES).
I don't actually have the game yet, but you can buy it for cheap, so that's not the problem.
Before going into the trouble of buying it all (and if I will), I wanted to know if there are a lot of people wanting to see this happen.

More importantly I was not planning on doing this as a single segment, but doing each stage separately. You can easily access the beginning of each stage by using a password if I'm not mistaken. So you'll get an IL-table on the page.
So the question is, will this be allowed?

If so and if enough people would really like to see it chances are high I'm going to buy this game and run it. If I have done all the levels individually I might try to do a SS run, but this is speculating way to much, so just ignore this sentence xD.

I've emphasised the important part a bit.
