To the best of my knowledge, an IL table without a SS or segmented run is fine (though I'm pretty sure the table could count as a segmented run for this game as long as it was just you who did all the ILs since you don't carry anything from level to level).  The only stipulation would be all levels would have to be completed before it went up (either by you or anybody else who wanted to do any of them).

Before going into the trouble of buying it all (and if I will), I wanted to know if there are a lot of people wanting to see this happen.

I for sure want to see this. I really loved that game back then Smiley

I also support the idea of an individual level time table. Every level is perfectly accessible through a password and you start every level in the exact same condition anyways. Also a SS run of this game would be extremely annoying to do I suppose. IIRC in some later levels you die pretty fast if you make small mistakes. Those levels also are rather long and I guess we'll see way more interesting playing if you don't have to play it safe.

For those who haven't played the game:
You have to get all three vikings to the exit alive. If one of them dies, you have to quickly finish off the others to restart the level, it won't happen on it's own. And yes, there are a lot of instant death possibilities throughout the game.

I've never played the Genesis version, but I approve of the IL tables (though a SS in this case would show more skill). If the idea of IL tables had come up months ago, maybe I would have done some by now, before I had several other runs I wanted to do. Oh well.
train kept rollin
I wanna see this, go for it.

To answer your question ZaibirQuild, an IL table before an SS run is perfectly acceptable.
I would like to see this one too. Played the game years ago (On the SNES I think) and it was awesome.
everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
Lots of people want to see either of the Lost Vikings games, they rule.
Just a small update:
I've bought the game, but schools being a bitch atm, so I'm probably going to delay trying to speedrun this a couple of weeks max. (with a bit of luck only 1 week delay ;p)
Will do it though, don't worry Wink

I'll keep you all posted
Another small update: My megadrive that was suppose to be on the attic disapeared, but I can borrow one from a friend.
Was wondering about two things though.

It is allowed to use the 6 buttons controller right? (if not this game would be hopelessly crappy to play xD)
Does it make any difference if it's played on the Megadrive 1 or Megadrive 2?

No it's not allowed, SDA stands for Sadism Damnation Assholes. Tongue

Of course we allow six-button controllers.
I played this game for a while on Rom, and it was intriguing but bloody hard, i'd like to see it, just to see the game more than anything...
Heavy Metal Powered
used to play this game alot when i was younger, then lightning took my SNES

just grabbed a rom of the game so i should be able to help with some routes and ideas

the TAS run of the Genesis version: http://tasvideos.org/703M.html
might be able to give some assistance in the planning
@Warepire, thanks, that would be awesome.

Just another small update:
Still don't have the Mega Drive in my possesion.
I suspect that it would take atleast another week (or two) before I begin, mainly because we've got some holidays coming up (starting saterday) here called carnival (carnaval in dutch), which basicly means, dress up like something and drink beer all day long. I'll be doing this till Tuesdays next week, so I'll probably be out that whole week as well. I'll try and get the Mega Drive after that week and come back here to inform you all on how it's going. Smiley

Alaaf! Smiley

Well, finally everything is set.

I hope I could get some input/feedback from you lot about (most) of the levels in case you see things that could improve it (by means of glitches or just better tactics etc.).

I've only done the first level so far, but I'll dump everything on youtube.

Here's my first go Smiley
Level 1:

This is not for testing the video quality, I haven't used anri for encoding and such. It's just for checking out the tactics/strategy that I use and, if possible, tying to improve it.
First level isn't that long so you can't say too much about it probably Wink :P.
More levels to come Wink

[edit] just found out youtube cut away the last half second of the video or something. Not that that really matters...

[edit2]
Level 2:

Level 3:

I think I can safely say I shall never attempt a SS speedrun of this game... That level 2 was already as annoying as hell xD. It's really easy to make a small mistake.
Heavy Metal Powered
great testrun so far, i dont think you can do it much differently than  what you already do
Not a walrus
Something I noticed is that the Genesis TAS steps over a couple holes that are two blocks wide. I wasn't able to do this on my SNES cart, is that something you can only do in the Genesis version or is it a non-obvious trick?
@ uraniumanchor, tbh I wouldn't know right now. (as far as I could remember there were no physicle differences between sega and snes other then sega have a couple more levels and the music being different)
Maybe someone else would know this?  Smiley

2 more levels:

level 4:

(I ment to get hit by that green alien)

level 5:

I could do the fighting part, after using the red key, a bit better, but that's just better execution.
Bwahahaha... there WILL be domination!

This is more of a trick than a glitch, but you can sometimes walk over holes if able to find the right frame.

(Copied out of the submission text for the Genesis TAS)

this insists that it's possible on the SNES version

EDIT: Tested via ZSNES, and it worked once out of a ton of tries... but then again, when you can be frame-perfect...

I agree, it would take some kind of miracle to get through most of this particular game without some huge mistake and a lot of little mistakes, or dieing (well, most mistakes can result in this anyway, considering how the game works, lol), but mistakes aren't as much of a problem in a SS, usually.

Either way, the test run looks very good so far, and I can't wait to see the end result.
Bwahahaha... there WILL be domination!
I'm looking at how much time can be saved via 2/3 person manipulation, but also thinking about how hard it'd be to coordinate such a run...  I'm honestly not too sure about difficulty on that end...  for some levels, it'd be easy and save a ton of time, for others, it seems nearly useless in cases...
Heavy Metal Powered
the TAS video saved ~5 minutes changing from 2 to 3 players controlled at the same time so there is defenetly time to be saved if you control multiple characters, either you play a 2/3 player game yourself (probably hard as hell) or find someone to co-run with.
Glitching EB 1 flying man at a time
Wouldn't a co-op run make it a separate category, though? Especially since 2 players on this game makes it a hell of a lot easier, assuming you can both coordinate everything well (who plays who when).
Bwahahaha... there WILL be domination!
I don't have a recorder, nor do I have a 2P...  I would totally try this, otherwise.

I have taken an interest in running the SNES version of this game.  I've recorded the first 4 levels so far, and right now I'm fairly satisfied with them.  However, I'd love some criticism or suggestions.  I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to redo levels 2 and 3, because I discovered its faster to move the Vikings together.  For instance, I'm pretty sure it's slower to move a viking all the way across the level and then switching to the other viking on the other side of the level.

Level 1
Level 2 (Improved 2 sec)
Level 3 (Improved 1 sec)
Level 4
Level 5

I'm basically capturing the runs directly onto my PC.  My SNES goes into a VCR, and the VCR's cable line just goes into my TV.  The AV out on my VCR is connected to a camcorder which is connected to my computer via Firewire.  Does anyone think this would be a problem?

Its pretty convenient because I don't have to waste tapes or dvds, and the DV avi files are much easier to handle.

Nice to see someone is doing it.
I also tried speed running it but found it this isn't my kind of game when it comes to speed running.

If you go a page back you can see a couple of videos from the first few levels. I'm not sure if it's the fastest way, but I thought I'd just mention it, maybe they help. They are from the SEGA version, but I don't think there's much difference.

I also tried timing what's faster and came to the conclusion that moving them together is indeed faster then moving them one by one.
The main thing with switching is to try and minimize the time the screen is scrolling when you can't control you're characters. In some levels where you teleport this can't be avoided, but you can try to minimize it.
I also found out that switching too fast, too many times between them is slower, because they don't gain full walking speed but have to build up momentum. And if you switch too much you're less time at full walking/running speed.

Don't have the time to dl and watch the movies now, will probably do so later on.

One more tip is that when you're about to switch with Erik (the running one) try jumping before you switch because he'll move a bit further then when you are just running and switch.

Also I'm not sure if the current format of the movies is allowed here at sda, but for that I must direct you to the tech support forums and post these vids for a quality check, otherwise pm Nate.

I hope this all helps and I'll love to see this game get speed run.
