I did some test runs today, no resetting allowed, just Start to Finish.

Jaws
4:53
5:41 (damn final confrontation, shark didn't behave)
5:50 (same)

Ghosts 'N Goblins
34:41
35:19
26:05 (with only one death! Of course, very last level.)

The first two GnG times had +5 deaths but mostly were just me being rusty and not paying attention. I think I can get it under 30 consistently if I'm careful.

TMNT II is not that good 2p game to run because the bosses have about 100% more health points and there is more then 50% more footsoldiers and enemies in the levels. And just one turtle is necessary to fight a boss. I know you are good at playing the game so I think it might be a nice show. But is there other opinions for this?

If not 2P, then we could probably have a face-off.  Which reminds me... (goes to download and watch run again), can't jump attack Torah consistently.

If we could set it up then I guess it would be a lot fun Smiley

Torah, who is that? Tongue I guess you can just jump kick him. It does not slow you down very much.
My feelings on The Demon Rush
Torah is the third boss. And if you guys can give me a halfway decent time estimate, I'll let you do turtles 2.

Guess this means I need to do turtles 4, if I had to give a (crappy) time estimate, I would say about 27 minutes.

Frezy's run is 35:53, so I'd say under 40.  Halfway as in after stage 4 (skateboard)?  Gotta play with the stopwatch to determine that one.  And wouldn't Torah be the 4th boss (Rocksteady, Bebop, Human Baxter)?  I was going to answer that but wasn't sure if that was sarcasm or a brain fart out of Frezy's ass.  I can jump kick him consistently but not without messing up during it.

Edit: A 38:10 playing recently.  2:15+ I need to kill off compared to Frezy.  Chalking it to some major bad luck (including f---ing up on Torah AGAIN [my timing sucks], plus I goofed up on Shredder [fakey interference and ended up killing him]), and I had perfect Rocksteady and Bebop fights to start off!  Also no deaths until Rocket Golem (had 1 unit of life left against Flame Golem and Shogun [stupid head flying around]).

I second TMNT 4 from the Big Sexy.
Talk to the Hand
Well, since everyone is doing it...

I threw down a 29:15 on Rygar last night. Rather than being a statement on how much I've improved in four years, this is really a tribute to just how awesome Kristian's levelling method is, as this was actually a pretty terrible run by any standard (Overly conservative, and getting hit by the "jump to your doom" glitch in Lapis's boss right after I'd killed him, taking away my mind points and forcing me to go grab an extra potion in the Sky Castle.).

I should really get practicing on TMNT.

so pro u don't even know
I can do Double Dragon II in 12-13 minutes.
Yoshi's eggs are at my mercy!
Because Jewyama loves me so much, I'm avoiding my super procrastination of posting in this thread weeks later and doing it right now. I'll run:

  • Yoshi's Island any% SS (surprising no one here, I know) with an estimated running time of sub two hours.
  • Sly Cooper any% SS with an estimated running time of TBA. By forcing myself to do this, it means I have to progress in something other than procrastinating doing other speedruns with the excuse of focusing on Yoshi's Island forever. >_>; The estimated time will be determined in the appropriate thread, safe to say sub 2 hours for now.

I'm considering bonus Crash Bandicoot 2 any% SS since there were requests for this when I originally produced the 100% speedrun in 2006.

On a miscelaneous note, about the "leisure acitvities" being done during the marathon, are we still struggling to come up with more stuff other than commentary and the piano playing?

My feelings on The Demon Rush
We're making pretty good progress on what games to run, though we're still missing some very important games that I think we could really use for the marathon.

I think what people fail to understand is that they can pick a game they don't have much experience with, because we still have four months to practice.

Castlevania
Castlevania II (it's boring, but it's part of the series)
Castlevania III (tough, but a run would be impressive)
Castlevania SOTN
Donkey Kong Country (if tjp7154 is coming, then this is covered)
Kirby's Adventure
Kirby Super Star
Metroid
Michael Jackson's Moonwalker (hey it's topical, and the game is pretty funny)
Ninja Gaiden 1-3 (the problem is if you die, your run is kind of screwed)
Super Mario Bros. 1-3
Super Mario World
Zelda
Zelda: A Link to the Past (wak
Zelda: Link's Awakening (isn't tigger77 working on this?)

I know people offered to do a couple of the above-mentioned games, but it's not 100% sure whether they're coming or can run the games.

Also, I never considered Game Boy games. I know there aren't many that stand out, but at the very least we could get a run of Link's Awakening.

Zugzwang: Hope you can come, looking forward to some blue furball action.

Kareshi and Emptyeye: Good to hear you guys have started practicing so early. If only I was that good about practicing. Sad

Frezy_Man: I have a GBA SP and GB Player so you don't need to worry about those two things. I appreciate that you're willing to run so many games for the marathon. Are you sure you're not overextending yourself? Also, Kareshi and Emptyeye want to race you in Kung Fu.

Tri-Hex: I know you love me so much, but you must not love reading the first post so much. Sad The focus is mostly old-school 8-bit and 16-bit games, so out of those games Yoshi's Island is the one you should prioritize. The other games don't fit the theme of the marathon. Also, the other event we thought of was speedrun races. If you have any other ideas, post them here.

neskamikaze: romscout agreed to run SMRPG, he said it would take about 4 hours. Between SMRPG and FF3/6, I think we've filled our rpg quota nicely.

MatrixTN: If what frezy_man says is true about TMNT2 2-player, then a better time estimate would be around 45 minutes, IMO.

Tigger77: Do you still want to run StarTropics?

sinister1: Hey I just noticed you're in the Maryland area, it will be cool to see some live knee-to-face action. Smiley Anything else you might want to try for the marathon?

mike89: I know you suggested some Alex Kidd earlier. You can post it here if you still want to run it, just don't expect the game to be a huge priority. Same with anything SMS.

Sounds good. Yes I can run all those games with just a small amount of practice. I did also mention Metroid which I can beat 2 bosses at least under 40 Minutes both bosses beaten if that is good enough. I might be able to do a no credit-Ninja gaiden 3 run but I cant promise that.
uhm. the total play time for all games would not be that many hours and I would not mind doing those in a few days.

Kung fu race sounds great Smiley

yep. I would guess that 45 minutes sounds good. 40-50 minutes+credits as 2p. eventually 40-55 min. + credit. But we better do all of it under an hour.
Hi! I'm andrewg!
Man, if I'm able to go to Magfest, I could probably run 10 of the games you just listed.

smb1-3, metroid, zelda, smw, CV1, and possibly some others. How about Lost Levels?
Exoray
As for gameboy games there are still quite some that could be fun to see.

Since we're in the classical era I'm only suggesting games for the original gameboy, so no GB color games.

Super Mario Land 2 (very runnable and far more entertaining than SML 1 would be)
Wario Land 1/2 (2 is pretty slow to run through but I guess the short path ending (sleep exit) could be done)
Donkey Kong Land 1/2/3 (completely different levels from the snes versions, but the games are generally dark and it might be hard to see the action even on a gameboy player)
Pokémon blue/red/yellow (the classic versions)
My feelings on The Demon Rush
frezy_man: If you can give us time estimates for your games, including the endings, that would be great.

moooh: Those are some great Game Boy suggestions! I do think Super Mario Land 1 should be on the list just because it's a short game. Also, instead of Donkey Kong Land, how about the Game Boy Donkey Kong game? It's a little difficult to SS, but it's really a great game with lots of cool jumping tricks.

Not 100% sure about pokemon, but I guess if someone wanted to run a pokemon game and had a reliable SS strategy, it could work.

I was referring to 1P there, but 45 sounds fine for 2.

And I still can't jump-kick Tora consistently without botching the rhythm (what's wrong with me?!).  On the plus side, level select ftw (start at 4 because 3 is the sewer half of scene 2).

Gameboy-wise: I'm not sure but Heiankyo (sp) Alien could be plausible but my copy no longer works.  And for some reason, I can't play it properly on emulator because it thinks I'm linked (hence 2P mode).  Solar Striker I could do but since it's an auto-scroller, crap (though I'd like to try busting it on one life).
Exoray
Yeah I guess the original Donkey Kong might work pretty well instead. 101 stages in total, someone better get busy practicing already Smiley

I guess Super Mario look!-I-can-pick-up-coins-with-my-fireball-!! Land 1 could fit in due to being short and it being a Mario game after all. It does contain a few auto-scrolling levels however.

A few more titles that springs to mind:

Kirby's Dream Land (The first Kirby game! It's short with the current SDA run clocking in at around 12 minutes)
Duck Tales 2 (I'm pretty sure this one is pretty much a straight port of the nes version. Might be fun to run this at the same time as someone else is running the nes version to see who finishes first)
that Metroidvania guy
Quote from moooh:

Yea, if you wanted to do Kirby's Dream Land for whatever reason, I'd have that covered (I randomly picked up the game the other day and did the first 2 stages faster than the current one via implementing damage boosting). But for Kirby games, I'd say Adventure (NES) and Super Star (SNES) would be better choices despite being a little longer. The gameplay is a lot more varied than the original KDL in both of these titles, and the powerups (especially the wheel powerups) make for a lot more excitement and a more entertaining speed run. Each would run a little under an hour, but the good thing about Super Star is you could have a co-op run which would be pretty fun. That'd also cut the time down significantly if you wanted to fit other stuff in, assuming both players knew what they were doing. Tongue

EDIT: also for SMRPG time estimate, might have to bump it up another 15 minutes (4:15) with how the conservative SS test runs have gone so far, but I'll see about cutting some stuff out plenty more during the next month or two to see if I can knock it down within that estimated 4 hour time slot.
Yoshi's eggs are at my mercy!

I'm sorry. I read this and got optimistic about less-than-amazingly-polished-speedrun ideas:

Alright, official list consists only of Yoshi's Island any% SS.

I'm pretty sure I read everything up into now, but I still have a [obvious] question. Like, does everyone play games like, 5 at a time, at a table while streaming everything? Or is it a 1-at-a-time-with-50-tons-of-anxiety-and-pressure sort of thing? Like, paint me a picture of what to expect it to look like as a participant. Smiley

I have an NES with SMB 1 and 3, I can practice on those for a few weeks and see if I am good enough to run em. What kind of time would I need for SMB 1?
SEGA Junkie
With this in mind:

* Forget Alex Kidd, it was a dumb suggestion given the target audience.
* I'll run Donkey Kong Land 2 and 3 if people think they're worth the watch. Also Wario Land 2, but, well, anyone can do that secret chapter in about ten minutes (plus ending).
* I'll also take Kirby's Adventure (the NES one, pretty sure that's what it's called) assuming nobody else wants it.
* While we're adding to speedrun races, I'd gladly take on stanski in Sonic 2. I'd get thrashed but that's not the point Cheesy

IMO, I'd say for SMB1, aim for under 6 minutes. That's what I think at least. ~5:50.
I want off the ride....
Well Mike; when i get a good stream setup i'll demo it; The gods have pretty much forbade me from going (money is not sound enough to go).

C:SoTN Any% 1 hour with ending. (~50 minutes + 10 for ending, more if you want me to run it with cutscenes [doubtful]);
C:SoTN 100% (if you want to redux it; or need a better hole); 2:50 (currently).

Castlevania 2, 55 minutes. (If i can get hearts in the first day, its pretty easy, if not; this goes to hell in a hand basket as I need to wait to get a proper route of it so 55 minutes cause of luck dependancies for everything).
I can Castlevania 2 around 50 minutes using my old way (setting out from Town 1 at the start of Day 2) but I'd rather be able to get the whole Day 1 Hearts thing right, which so far I haven't done.

I'd definitely be interested in running Blaster Master but I'd say the odds of me showing up at Magfest are <5%. I do have a working stream setup so if you want to you can add me to the list.

45 minutes just to be on the safe side, but I could probably get under 43.
My feelings on The Demon Rush
UA, since you're by far the best person to do a Blaster Master run, you can stream your run live.

Seth Glass also offered to stream Mega Man 2. Smiley I don't know if he has a working stream, but I asked him about it. Now all we need is someone willing to run mm1.

Put me down for Link's Awakening.  Estimated time, somewhere around 1 hour 35 minutes (the running time of my old run)?  I have a cart, of course.  This may be adjusted depending on whether or not Tigger77 volunteers (please do!), but that can be worked out later.
