I'll be using warps for Battletoads. Given that a performance as good as the one at M6 is highly unlikely, combined with the fact that I probably won't hit the Boot Scuzz glitch (Pianotoads = No audio cues for me), say about 30 minutes as an estimate.

Also, I do own and can bring all three of the games I'll be running.

Do we have any idea as to the order we'll be running? Is it just alphabetical or what?
You got a deletion wish?
I've got Sonic 3/Sonic & Knuckles for Genesis so I can provide that for Mike89.  Same with Toy Story for Stanski if he currently doesn't have it.
Waiting hurts my soul...
Some more games that'd be nice to add if anyone is willing to play them. I put in some RPGs because it looks like you need a couple time fillers.

SNES

ActRaiser (Challenge Mode run?)
Bubsy
Chrono Trigger
Demon's Crest
Goof Troop
Earthbound (seems to be popular enough)
Illusion of Gaia(/Time)
Joe & Mac
Legend of the Mystical Ninja
Lemmings
Lost Vikings
Lufia (maybe ng+, it's faster x2? exp and gold)
Out of this World
Pocky & Rocky
Secret of Mana
Soul Blazer
Star Fox
Sunset Riders (mike, you're already practicing it)
Super Castlevania IV
Super Mario RPG
Super Turrican (2?)
Super Valis IV
TMNT IV
U.N. Squadron (I know not SDA approved for speedrunning, but it'd be nice to see and I'm sure there are people who could play it well)

NES

Kirby's Adventure
Gargoyle's Quest II
Kabuki: Quantum Fighter
Karnov
Kid Icarus
Solomon's Key
Solstice
Willow

Genesis

Castlevania: Bloodlines
Crusader of Centy
Hook
Immortal
Landstalker
Rocket Knight Adventures
Shining Force
Shinobi III
Strider
Sword Of Vermillion
Toe Jam & Earl
My feelings on The Demon Rush
First post updated with more potential games we could run, and a special events section. As always, suggestions are welcome.

Second post updated with Battletoads times and a couple of games we have (all of Emptyeye's choices and Sonic 3)

Emptyeye: Right now I'm just trying to find people willing to run enough games to fill a 48-60 hour timeslot. We can think about order later.

A couple of things about order that should definitely be done:

-Group all games in a series together (Sonic, Mega Man, Mario).

-Group games by genre/theme (beat 'em up, Ninjas, 80's movies, saturday morning cartoons, etc.)

We can have some random stragglers in between, but I think those two methods for grouping games are best.

MatrixTN: Cool

ZenicReverie: I didn't add all of the games you suggested, but I added a bunch of them. I think having another rpg wouldn't be a bad idea (especially if it was SMRPG), but I don't want the marathon to be dominated by RPGs.
Everything's better with Magitek
Mike, I have copies of Dr. Mario, DKC2, and FF6.  I also think it would be cool to have another RPG, but since they take so long, I don't think we should have more than 2 or 3.  If no one else is willing, I could probably do Chrono Trigger or FF4 (FF2 on the SNES), but unfortunately I don't know SMRPG very well (I think I've only beaten it once).
I'm going to go try out some more conservative (ie suboptimal) strategies on Castlevania 4 which should minimize risk while maintaining a decent speed (completion total like 45-50 minutes methinks). If that works out I'll gladly pitch in there*

*unless someone who's going to magfest wants to do it.

Here is runs that I would love to do at MAGfest

Contra Any% - 10:30-11:30

"I am always in shape for this run and its low chance for screw ups. I know very well how to play with the pee shooter if I should die"

Contra Low% - 11:40-13:00
"I might die a couple of times but it would be a good show if you will like watching the run in 11:33 that will be posted at sda anytime this Autumn."

SuperC Any% - 14:00-16:00
"This run is a bit risky but I will at least beat it without using a credit"

SMB 3 Any%  - 11:00-12:30
"Always in good shape for this one"

Mega man 3  - 37:00-41:00
"Tikis form is probably better then mine but I have pulled off a few 37:XX runs earlier this year"

Kung fu    - 04:00-05:00
"The chance is most likely a no death run

Teenage mutant Ninja heroes 2 - 36:00-40:00
"I am always in good shape for this one and I guarantee no continues"

Duck tales 09:00-10:30
"a no death easy mode run is no problem sub 10. but I cant play at the level of the current run and can not handle the glitches. and If I play on normal or difficult mode (basically the same difficulty for a speedrun). Then I have to do some boss fights really carefully.

Duck tales 2 - 12-14:00
"I am a bit rusty on this one so I would like to play on easy difficulty because otherwise I do not feel safe" hard more is riskier and I might die on a couple of bosses.

Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers 11:30-14:00
"I am rusty here and I might die on the final boss =)"

Mega Man X Any% - 35:00-38:00
I know this game very well. To be sure that I will not die I will have to take a few heart tanks. I think that would be the best idea so I not screw up here.

Mega Man X2 Any% - 38:00-45:00
I am rusty here and havent played it since I pulled of my run but with a lots of warm ups I will beat it around 40. I will have to skip trying some tricks and I will do a lots of safety moves.

Lion king 16:00-21:00
I might die on stage 3 on hardest difficulty so I recommend playing on normal mode. I will most likely beat it without deaths including take the life barometer-expander at the first stage. but I would not be surprised if I die once or twice.

HERE IS SOME OTHER IDEAS not THAT great maybe.

Mega Man 2 - 31:00-40:00
"I can always beat this one on Uretas old route most likely under 35 so if you guys dont have a better option Tongue I might try to run it and practice some more before MAGfest but I cant guarantee"

Mega Man 4 - 41:00-50:00
"I have not played it a lot lately but sub 50 is no problems"

Mega Man 5 - 48:00-59:00
"I have to do some warm ups and I am not that great on this game."

Mega man X 100% 40:00-45:00
"I havent done this in a while and I will most likely screw up on a lots of hadokens =)"

Mega Man X3 any% or 100%
"Maybe Mike would handle this one better then me"

Super mario bros 3 No flute - 55:00-1:10
"This would probably be a good show even if I am a bit rusty on some levels and a few strategies is probably outdated"

Metroid NES both bosses - 30:00-40:00
" The problem is that skip the ridley fight is a very risky run no matter how good you are. and 100% is to boring for me (and I would get lost). But I can do a both bosses run in sub 40 if you like to see it".

Otherwise I can offer Metroid Zero mission between 30 and 40 minutes. and there is a bunch of games I might take a look at and with some practice I can make a good show of it. (for example is working on MMZ3 right now but I cant promise that I will finnish the practicing).

And for Battle speedruns
For example hooking up with Tiki and doing  MM 2,3,4,5,x,x2 would be alot fun.
fighting AndrewG in SMB3 would be great.
I am pretty much up to meet anyone in those games mentioned above.
Jumping Turtle
fyi the 28:42 record for Zero Mission runs over 45 minutes. A 3X:XX run is more like 50.

It's too bad I have no capturing devices at the moment. I've been practicing a Hard any% run these past couple days. It's apparently really hard. O_o The HBJ isn't really so much "the tough part" as it is one of many. >_< There are many rooms that make it very difficult to save time in, like the Hive Room, Kraid fight, the zig-zag bomb jump to get out of the Grip pit early, the nearly impossible Ice Beam spark, the larva in Norfair, the sidehopper room in Ridley, Ridley himself, and of course...Tourian....

oh, off course  Roll Eyes

What about just trying to do as populare games/runs as possible and just get rid of the "Classic-theme". If we get a great Metroid Prime Player or whatever, then let him run it! Is not that how to make as much public as possible?
Talk to the Hand
I told Mike over AIM that I wouldn't mind doing one or two short (<5 minutes) games like Marble Madness or Kung Fu in addition to my current workload. If Frezy and/or Andrew or coming, I'm okay with either a backup spot or a runoff with their respective SDA run-holders on those two.

I agree to an extent. I think more people might come to see a Halo or a Mario Galaxy run, rather than a bunch of games on consoles they never had. But I don't think there shouldn't be a lot of oldschool games. I think it's a good idea to advertise SDA's diversity. As true as it may be that a more focused marathon might turn out better, if you can't actually keep that focus, and have to put in a ton of unpopular games to fill the time, I think it's a better idea to have games all over the place, that even more people can appreciate. Even obscure things here and there can be interesting. Just because someone hasn't seen Monster Party before doesn't mean it isn't entertaining.

But I think the more recent or more popular games should be placed closer to the end of the marathon. Sure, have games like SMB3 at the beginning to keep people entertained the entire time, but for late-comers that are really interested in seeing a certain game, they can look at the schedule and tune in like an hour before it's supposed to air. Maybe put FF6 or Chrono Trigger at the very end to leave on a high note, and since they're so long, people aren't so surprised once it's finished and you're like "okay that's the last game, bye guys! * end feed *"

Of course that's just my opinion.

I would like to do some commentating for games I know.

Is the plan to have a couple of Microphones for the runner and for commentators during the runs? It would be great if both parts could commentate a run at the same time and maybe have a discussion during parts of the run.
With some serious planning this can be a great show. maybe we can even stream two TV screens for speedrun competitions and having commentators at the same time. that would be great.

And what about racing games.
My feelings on The Demon Rush
Essentia: Agreed, while I think RPGs are a good idea, having more than 2 would make the marathon too rpg-heavy, IMO. My only problem with Chrono Trigger is the 40+ minutes of leveling required to beat the game. The reason why I wanted SMRPG is because it's fast-paced, lots of people know it, there isn't much level grinding, and it's Mario.

Frezy_Man: The focus is classic games because it's easier to advertise a marathon if you have a focus that you can advertise easily, which is why the speed gamers do speedruns of series (Final Fantasy, Zelda, Mega Man). I think a 8/16-bit games marathon shows off some of SDA's diversity, while still maintaining a focus that is easy to advertise.

If this marathon is successful, then we can easily branch out and do marathons that aren't as limited by theme.

I can make exceptions for newer games that are part of long-standing series like Metroid. I know you wanted to run Zero Mission, and Nate was willing to do Metroid Prime.

Glad you're offering to run so many games and commentate on the games you know. BTW, do you own all of the games you are willing to run?

JaggerG: I'm intending to use FF6 as the finale. And yes, I do see your point, but I want to keep at least a loose theme so it's easier to advertise. Just saying "SDA marathon" won't really cut it for people who don't know SDA.

Commentators: I'm not sure what kind of mics we'll use (I don't know much about audio equipment), but yes, that's the plan. And yes, I would like to stream both screens when we have speedrun races.

Racing games: Sure, why not? If nothing else, everyone likes Mario Kart Smiley
Everything's better with Magitek
Yeah Mike, I see your point.  Leveling is boring to watch, and when I think about it, FF4 would also have a bunch of leveling.  So yeah, SMRPG would probably be the best choice for another RPG.

And, oh wow, I'm doing the finale?  That's going to put some pressure on me. Wink

Wanna go 2P on this?

This will probably fall under no, but if anyone has Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie (Genesis), I could do it on Hard in under 30 mins.  I did a 27:45 recently on it.  Goldar is an annoyance since you face him 3 times (twice as a Ranger, once as a Battlezord).

I wonder if romscout would agree to doing this. I know he's currently doing a SMRPG speedrun and he said he's going.
No pain, no gain
Yeay, Essentia!  Glad you're going!

For your info, Breakdown, Essentia has both DKC2 and Dr. Mario (N64); if you need the original Dr. Mario for the NES, I have it but will lend it to Essentia before she goes.  I currently have FF3/6 as well, but I should let her borrow it again so she can practice up / take it to MAGFest.  Smiley
Haters gonna hate
As some of you may have already noticed, I'm now the one maintaining the games/runners/times list.  If you want to add games I'm probably the best person to contact, though you can still funnel them through Mike if you'd like.  Of course, just posting here is probably the easiest way for all involved.

Frezy:  Haven't added any of yours yet.  Was planning to add your definites, but I don't think most of your time estimates account for the ending (for example checked the video length of your Contra any% and it comes in at just shy of 12:30 and I somehow doubt you expect to beat that run by a minute period, let alone in one shot live Wink ).  I'll give you a chance to revise those before I plug them in.

Also in terms of multiple runs in different categories for games I think we're trying to avoid that at the moment.  I think the current plan is to put up a list of different games and maybe add some different categories if we need to fill time either on the main list or if we blow through the list too quickly at the event and have some time left over to fill.  I'm sure if I'm wrong on this Mike will chime in to the effect, so if he contradicts me listen to him.

You're pretty much right. I have no problem with doing multiple runs in different categories, but I don't know if viewers watching would want to see the same game more than once. However, I do think contra low% is a good idea on top of the normal run because a lot of people think you're dead if you don't have spread in Contra.
Flame Cannon run.

GO.

Happy Day! I'm about %80 sure about comming from Sacramento! Mostly a matter of time off. I'm pretty syched too meet all of you guys.

My contribution:
Bionic Commando 22min
Castlevania 18min
Duck Tales 10min
Lolo 25min

Oh, and if me playing is contigent on my first run here. I'll have to get that done  Wink
By all means if the official runner makes it I'd expect to be bumped.

Edit: I have all these

Wanna go 2P on this?

We can do that. TMNT II is not that good 2p game to run because the bosses have about 100% more health points and there is more then 50% more footsoldiers and enemies in the levels. And just one turtle is necessary to fight a boss. I know you are good at playing the game so I think it might be a nice show. But is there other opinions for this?

Yes, I was not aware of that you will have to include the credits. I can redo that list then. give me some time. Is there anything more you want to now?

I have all those games and I can bring them to MAGfest but I would prefer to just bring necessary games. Also I need to use an GBA SP to controll Samus in M:ZM (if not anyone else run that game). Otherwise I cant walljump Wink and I dont have a GBA player so I need to buy or borrow one.
Jaws in about 5 minutes
Ghosts 'N Goblins in about 30 minutes
Monster Party in about 20 minutes

-I do still own the carts.
dude. awesome. it just wouldn't be an sda marathon without jaws.
Edit history:
kareshi: 2009-08-28 12:19:58 pm
I owe a debt to Magfest when it comes to Jaws. At Magfest 4 I played a six-minute game and my two witnesses said "you should try to make a world record!" and that led to the War of Jaws at TG, and my original SDA run and two self-obsoletions. It wouldn't have happened without Magfest because no other location am I around people who enjoy watching NES games.
