A couple things:

To both account for luck (Especially with finding the Technodrome) and because I'd like to, ideally, not have the (Intentional) death in the run, 30 minutes may be a better estimate for TMNT. I'd rather overestimate and be done with time to spare (That'll give us additional setup time and the like too) than the opposite.

Also, I'd like to throw this question to the community: Is Rygar on the NES a popular enough game to speedrun, particularly in an "old-school classics" marathon? Mike wasn't sure, and I stated that I thought it mainly had cult classic status, which may or may not be good enough for this (I'm not overly concerned about the length factor; it's maybe 30 minutes).

Finally, hooray for Essentia! I didn't even know your first baby had been born for some reason. Silly me. Smiley

Check in the Pictures of Forum Members thread, it was July of last year.  Middle of P52.

Is Resident Evil the right type of game for this marathon?  I'm not getting the impression that it is.

Not especially, but the nostalgia factor will definitely help. Everyone loves shitty voice acting. The RE video(s?) for the last panel didn't work out so well due to the fact that the entertainment wasn't in the execution, but I'm pretty certain a full RE run will work out.

RE4 or 5 would probably be a different story, on the other hand. I may consider practicing those.
I'll do Mike Tyson's Punch Out.

I think it might be interesting to have a schedule of games to be played, and have a clock that keeps track of the progress you're making as compared to the run schedules. Like say you schedule SMB for seven minutes to be safe, and it's finished in 5:43, the clock turns green and says -00:01:17, then on the next game you make enough mistakes to get 2 minutes over your expected run time and the clock turns red and says +00:00:43. It might be easier if you just have a chart on a page that lists the runs, and have a button that clears the run time and inputs it, then starts the timer again. You should probably make it so that you can drag other runs up the list, so if the schedule changes, the timer runs for that game instead.

Then you can tell people "Okay guys, I think Frezy over here can take us to an hour under our schedule on this run. Anyone gonna take that bet?" This also enables you to automatically check the main marathon timer offset and adjust the run schedules every time you finish a run. Both the players and the audience can see the time their run is gonna start. Shazam, organization.

I'm going to edit the first post to reflect this change, but now when people submit games they can run, they should give an estimate of how long the game will take, and whether they can come to MAGFest or not.

Stanski said he would be willing to run Sonic 2 if he came to MAGFest. Kareshi said he is willing to run Ghosts 'n Goblins and Jaws. Jaws might not be very popular, but it's only five minutes so why not let him run it? Cheesy

Vorpaledge: Does the RE series fit within the old-school theme of the marathon? Probably not, unless if it's Resident Evil 1, but for now I should probably be a little more lenient with the games, so I'll put RE1 in tentatively just so we can ensure we have at least 48-60 hours of games to play.

Emptyeye: I'll let you run Rygar, if for no other reason, we should try to fill up the schedule with games. Anyway, I know Rygar has its fans.

JaggerG: I know we definitely need a schedule, if for no other reason to organize the games into coherent themes. We need to group the games that are in series, but keep the series far enough apart so that we don't go through every single big game within 24 hours. The timer idea is good, but I'm not sure how to implement it.

if i make it i'll be up for street fighter EX 1 & 2 expert modes, not 3 though because that shit takes FOREVER (have to level up your DP and such).  also SF4 challenge mode, although we would need all characters unlocked in advance

hell, maybe even edge master mode in soul blade or something

GOTTA GET TO THE EDGE OF SOUL

TO CARRY ON

hahaha I can do Edge Master but fuck SF4/EX trials seriously those hurt my hands
sf4 for-fun tournament?  Tongue
There'd be people playing SF4 all over MAGfest =p

Rearranged the first post. I added a table at the bottom so we can estimate how much we can fit into a 48-60 hour schedule. I will add more must-run games later.

I think one thing that people who are attending MAGfest don't understand is that you can offer to run games you don't have a lot of experience with but you would like to play. You have a little over 4 months to practice, which is enough for any game. Every person who wants to play will probably have to play multiple games.

rashreflection: Usually you're so obvious when you troll, but I honestly can't tell whether you're trolling with that post or not. Huh?

Double Dragon III practically owns me (within Stage 2, usually by Chin) so if you're considering putting me for that, scratch it.

I might be able to do MM3 if Tiki can't make it but I'll need a major overhaul in practice.  Don't know what kind of time I could pull so I'd stick with 40.
If (and ONLY if) you absolutely can NOT find anyone else to run Super Mario World, I could probably do it in 15 or so.
I don't even know what the fuck this is

Don't worry about that, I'm doing it remotely. But yeah, you could probably be a backup in case something horrible happens to me lol

Like if your connection happens to really suck at that specific time for some reason.

Also I hope you guys are including set-up and (in some cases) ending time. For games like Super Metroid, don't just take the in-game time. I'm sure it takes about an hour, even to get a 32 minute single segment run.

Sonic 3 and Knuckles (Mike89 says he's coming!)

Yes, yes, yes. I am so up for this.

I will also practice one of the Donkey Kong Country games (preferably DKC2) if nobody else wants to do them, but while I might be able to practice on emulator, if I end up running it, MAGfest will be the first time in my life I have ever held a SNES controller, so there's bound to be some teething problems.
Everything's better with Magitek
I've got good news: I'm coming!  So mike89, is it okay if I take DKC2?  I'd like to put all of my practice on it to a good use. Smiley

I was looking through the games list, and I haven't even played most of them.  I could maybe do Mega Man X2 or 3, although I'd have to practice a bunch, and I'm sure there are others who could do them better.  Of course, even though they're not on the list, I'm always up for running Dr. Mario or FF6. Wink

Mike, go ahead and put me down for some commentary.  At this point, I wonder how much is in demand for you to do the big sexy.

Essentia: Be glad to have you here.  I would second you for Dr. M (plus you've got an eventual appointment with him anyway).

Yeah, let Ess have DKC2.  I'd like to see M89 doing S3&K in action.
My feelings on The Demon Rush
First post updated, as some if you have already noticed.

Essentia: Great to know you're coming! I assume this means I can put you in the "definitely coming" group in the main MAGFest thread.

I should have explicitly stated this in the first post, but just because a game isn't in the list doesn't mean you can't suggest it. We're at the stage where we want to fill up a tentative schedule of 50-60 hours.

X2 and X3: If Frezy_Man comes (I hope so), he can probably do X2. I haven't played X3 in a while, but I'm sure I could practice up to the point where I was 4 and a half years ago.

Dr. Mario: Not 100% sure about this game, but if you give me a time estimate, I can put this game up on the table. The worst that could happen is some other game replacing it.

FF6: If you give me a time estimate, I'll put this game up. I think it would work great as a finale.

This is what Mike89 said to me about DKC2 a couple of hours ago:

Quote:
[01:52] <mike89> -I call DKC2 if essentia's not coming - I think donkey kong -land- 2 is pretty heavily based on it (and I did watch the DKC2 speedrun which seems to back up this claim) so I should be okay there if I put the practice in

I think you'll be okay. Is the time estimate of 55-60 minutes accurate, or should it be changed?

Yes Mike, you can put me down as "definitely coming".

For DKC2, I'd go with 60 minutes, just to be safe.  Dr. Mario would take around 40 minutes, but it also depends on which version I play (the N64 version has an extra level).  FF6 would be around 5 1/2 hours.

Edit: I was confused - changed the time for Dr. Mario from 50 minutes to 40 minutes.

mike i guess my ideas really suck then, because that was 100% serious post
I'll try to give you a real time estimate for Punch-Out in the next few days. I will say that the later in the day for punch out the better, because I will be flying in on the 1st from St.Paul. It shouldn't be a big issue since I'll definitely be there during Magfest.
I want off the ride....
Well I can do C:SoTN. I am still unsure if i'll show up to MAG fest (things are turning down so it looks pretty much a no go) but I'll be sure to stream it;

I can also (if my cartridge works) do Simons Quest (Castlevania 2).

C:SoTN i can guarentee in under an hour
Simon's Quest i'm still not sure on.

I also wouldn't mind doing Megaman X4 (Zero only). Which I'm not too much slower than Mike in speeding it. but <hour.
My feelings on The Demon Rush
Updated the first post with more listings, a bit about endings (include them in your timing just in case), and whether we have a copy of the game or not (not a big deal since I'm sure MAGFest can provide, but good to know just in case).

We still need a lot of games, so if you have a good game to suggest (i.e. not cybernoid), or if you can run one of the games in the games list, then that would be great.

Also, if you have a suggestion for a special event within the marathon like Kareshi playing piano while Emptyeye plays Battletoads (Pianotoads), or doing a live race, then I'm open.

RaneofSOTN: It's too bad things are looking down for you, but if you can show us a working stream you can still participate. I will need a more specific time estimate for SOTN. Saying under 1 hour is too vague.
