Last practice before making the trip!

Did some single loop runs of Donkey Kong (NES). I can pretty much guarantee a no-death run, but there's a chance of looking bad doing it if I get REALLY bad luck (mainly an issue with stage 3). I've decided that I'll shoot for the ladder glitch once, and if I miss I'll just complete stage 1 normally. I can do the ladder glitch about a third of the time. I can only do the rivet trick in stage 3 about 1% of the time so I'm not even going to bother with that. Here's how the runs went:

1:39 (missed ladder glitch, HORRIBLE stage 3 luck, needed to use hammer)
1:34 (missed ladder glitch, HORRIBLE stage 2+3 luck with flames, had to use hammer)
1:14 (got ladder glitch, decent stage 2, had to fumble a bit in stage 3)
1:24 (missed ladder glitch, had to wait on a flame once in stage 3)
1:08 (got ladder glitch, pretty decent run)
1:07 (ladder glitch twice in a row! might've matched SDA record if I didn't go a little conservative on stage 2)
1:21 (missed ladder glitch, pretty nice luck on stage 3)
1:20 (missed ladder glitch, got stuck on a couple ladders, average stage 3 luck)
1:12 (got ladder glitch, smooth but still had to do some tricks on stage 3 to stay alive)
1:27 (missed ladder glitch, had to take lower route on stage 2, average luck on stage 3)

It's kinda hard to "speed run" one loop of such a short game when you pretty much have to improvise everything due to randomness, but at least I've trained myself to b.s. my way through the loop without dying. Sorry if anyone wanted me to do a kill screen run... not prepared for that yet. ;0 So yea, did 10 runs, and odds are the marathon run will fall somewhere in that range shown above.

I was planning on doing one last practice run for SMRPG, but it's not really necessary. It's also too late tonight. I'll be fine for MAGfest. I have a little cheat sheet now that will be with me to make sure I don't botch some of the parts of the plan I've screwed up sometimes on stream, and considering the last stream I did had a few bathroom breaks, food time, 12+ minutes getting past a puzzle that I now have on my cheat sheet, an unintentional game over in the Factory (I know how to guard against that happening now btw), failure to get the Attack Scarf, a few big botches, and horrendous luck on Smithy while still falling under 5 hours somehow, I think the run at MAGfest can assuredly run close to the 4:30 range if not under (good thing Mike's listed it as 5 hours just in case though).

So yea, just gonna pack up now, work tomorrow, head out Wednesday morning, and see you all there!

Doing some speedrun practice, but with Frezy_Man, Tigger77, and Vorpaledge.

Featured games are Zero Mission by Frezy_Man (current game), and Super Metroid by Vorpaledge.
Talk to the Hand
Made what will likely be my last practice runs before the real deal.

...yeah. Kung Fu was about the only one I was happy with, if that's any indication. On the other hand, it was nice to get my fucking boneheaded move out of the way before the marathon (Note to self: Give Don [With a half cube of energy remaining] the full pizza inside the Technodrome, not Mike [With three quarters of a full life meter remaining]. If you're wondering why I was using Mike, it's my failsafe if Don runs low on health to have Mike clear out a corridor using the Triple Ninja Stars you get in Area 4)...didn't even finish Rygar because I was playing like someone who had never played the game before (Though I would've stuck it out in the actual marathon...dying isn't insurmountable even when you do it repeatedly). Sad

Hey Mike, are we going to like exchange contact information or whatnot so we can be located when we're on deck to run games (If we're not in the immediate area)?

Yoshi's eggs are at my mercy!
Just finished another practice session. Everything went great until 3-4. Died twice while eating enemies while hovering above spikes. The boss fight also went sloppy as I got hit 4-5 times with trying to remain hovering above the dangling thing in the frog boss' throat (in other words, playing less efficiently would've made not getting hit way easier). After that, the next major hurdle was 4-4. Died twice trying to tackle the first room (top right in the quad-door room) as fast as possible.

Thanks to my craptastic, unchangeable scheduling error, I won't be landing until after the community house thingy. So I'll get one last night to polish the later worlds.

Quote from Arkarian:
honestly i think there will be a lot of people watching at 12:30 am, both at mag and at home. remember that's only 9:30 pm on the west coast, and many people are on winter break anyway, so they'll be up.

Thanks for the insight. As I said previously, I didn't mind too much about the time slot, but in retrospect, less pressure at MAGFest is probably for the better.

Tri-hex: First off, your time slot is not bad at all, lots of people will stay up past midnight because it's the weekend (you don't know gamers too well, do you?), and like Ark said, it'll be 9:30 on the West Coast. If you want, you can play SoM in my place instead, it will only be 5 and a half hours from 2-7:30 am. Tongue

Honestly, it's great that you're going to spend so much time practicing, but I'm going to give Ark the final schedule today, and unless if you can come up with a good estimate today, I'm sticking with 2 hours.

I don't know what this warp glitch is, but if it involves going back to 1-1 to complete the stage, I wouldn't use it, it would just confuse the hell out of people. I'm not saying we can't use glitches for our runs (a lot of our runs will have glitches, especially Secret of Mana), but something like that is more baffling than jaw-dropping.

Which is why I actually recommend to use it if it's explained in the commentary some. It's only 3 levels and certainly interesting from the "Hey, how does that work? It doesn't make any sense" point of view.

I don't want to come off as demanding, but I like LLCoolDave's suggestion. Either way, given it's allowed, I'd like to do the warp glitches. They're very easy to accomplish, makes levels faster, and gives me 3 eggs at the end of any 1-1 warp. From a speedrunning perspective, there's no downside.

What happened to Super Tennis? I don't see it mentioned as coming off the schedule, but it's not on there anymore.

Also, is Symphony of the Night the only non 8-16 bit game? It kind of sticks out as strange for me. Ah well, probably too close to the event to change it, plus it's a good game to watch anyway.

trihex: i think you should just use the warp glitches. i'm sure someone could jump on the mic and explain what's going on. better to know you'll finish in time and confuse a few people than to go over.

Alright we have a promo video that needs spread around in a hurry!

http://nate.metroid2002.com/download.php?url=http://nate.quandra.org/SDA_Charity_Marathon_Promo_High_Quality.mp4

You can substitute High in the url for Low, Medium, or Insane to get it in those qualities.

Or if you're too lazy to download it and upload it places, you can just link to it from either....

or

http://screwattack.com/videos/SDAs-Classic-Games-Done-Quick-Marathon-Promo-Video

So take these links and spread it around.  Post it yourself, link to it on other forums, e-mail it to people.  Anything you can do to get the word out.  We go live just inside of 48 hours here, so anybody who hears about it for the first time now won't have too much time to forget about it.

Also, if you're up for it, you can take a cue from UltraJMan (who has been frequenting the practice streams) and make your own little video to spread the word.  You can see what he put together for us here: .  Thanks a bunch man!

I posted the youtube vid in a large internet poker forum, hopefully some of the ballers who reside there will contribute.

Also the brentalfloss link in the youtube vids "more info" section is not working because because of a typo (space between two letters).
I found a Kung Fu cart at Play N Trade, only to see it play Super Mario Bros when I put it in my NES. So I'm still Kung Fuless.

Wow, serious? Someone switched out the cart or put the Kung Fu sticker on it? You'd think the game store would have checked it to see if it works.

I thought all carts were covered though? I could have shipped my Kung Fu cart to someone if you guys were going to be short.

Fixed the link in the youtube vid, thanks for pointing that out, not sure how it happened.

And we're on the front page of ScrewAttack!  We've got a spot in their Community Spotlight section, same place my Jackal vid ended up and that got close to 1000 views in a couple days, so this is bound to help us out a bunch.

Oh, and might as well throw a practice update in.  I'm going to be a little late to the party (leaving the first), so I get a little extra time to grind these games.

Faxanadu:  I'd been neglecting this one admittedly, playing a little here and there and saying "oh I should firm up what I do there" and "I'll figure out exactly how many time I need to enter and exit for that item drop next time."  Well, I sat down and figured all that shit out tonight, and the result is a pretty decent live attempt route if I do say so myself (don't ask Shiner what he thinks though Wink ).  If all goes well I'll have an Hourglass chilling in my inventory at the end and finish in like 35 minutes (yes, faster than my current soon to be obsoleted run).  Most of the more technical tricks are early on and I have few safety nets in place if things go south on me (which they can in a hurry).  However, this is the game I have the greatest chance of putting myself in a position where I can't beat it in a reasonable amount of time if things go just wrong.  Hopefully, though, that won't happen.

I plan to make a sweep through most of my games tomorrow just to have the feel fresh for when I get there, having trouble believing we're going to be live inside of 2 days.

I hope I don't suck as bad in my MAGFest run as I do in my practice runs. I just got a 12:45 in DD II but I am drunk so maybe I can do better tomorrow.

I had a really awesome time today for the couple of hours I was there, and I wish I could have stayed longer.  I'm watching this finish up right now and I am still applauding you guys over how well this has gone. OVER 9000 is amazing.  I'm very grateful I was able to be a very small part of this with my tiny little run and comments.  Much love.

Awesome marathon guys!  Hopefully I will be able to join you all next year.  But for now, can't wait for the highlights!
The marathon was SO good.
I enjoyed all of it that I saw. Great Job.

I think I spent my entire Sunday here. Great time maybe I'll actually go to one of these things instead of knowing about it and saying "hey that would be fun" and forgetting all about it.
