Hi! I'm andrewg!
So it's pretty much a definite that I'm coming now.  8) (unless something unexpected comes up...)

EDIT:

Games I can speedrun:
Super Mario Bros. - 6:00
Super Mario Bros. 2 - 14:00
Super Mario Bros. 3 - 15:00  (andrewg vs. frezy race?)
Super Mario Bros. 2J - 10:00
Super Mario World -  15:00
Rush n' Attack - 13:00 (Co-op?)
Marble Madness - 5:00 (2 player dual play?)
Mike Tyson's Punch Out - 25:00
Castlevania - 18:00
Mega Man - 30:00
F-Zero - 25:00

Mike has a tentative schedule written down on the previous page.
I'm not cheating! I'm playing by my own rules!
Quote from Essentia:
I just thought of something we could do for games that allow you to rename the characters (such as FF6 and Secret of Mana, don't know if there are any others): We could auction off the characters' names.  It could be something like, "The next person to donate such and such amount will get to choose the name of the character" or "The person who donates the most in the next 10 minutes will get to choose the name".  The Speed Gamers did some of this during their Final Fantasy marathon; someone actually donated something like $1500 to have every character in FF7 named Sephiroth.

My brother MatrixTN showed me this reply and just thought I'd give my two cents.

Enjoy!
I want off the ride....
I finally actually took a look at the listing for the marathon; and well frezy man is all over the place, how will the Swede of Speed have any real rest time or.. well anything...
but he is on 18 games over the total 52 hours and accounts for... about 18% of the whole thing...

I dont mean to sound negative but... he has 9 hours worth of the running.. and I kinda wanna be sure that he'll be alright for all of it. Cause its sorta spread out and frezy is the first player on the list..

Now; I kinda helped with the route planning of mm3 but i'm not as fast as everyone (mostly do to issues of not having a cart to really practice the mashing) but.. is there anyone else (in case of a frezy melt down or something) that could take over some of the games listed for him? Now I wouldn't fret if these 9 hours weren't split between 18 games (1 of which has mike as a back up).

Good schedule Mike, but any chance we could try to get some back ups listed in case of something happening?
gamelogs.org
i back up the back up idea (har har). hopefully they won't be necessary, but it's a good plan just in case. we've seen what happens in other video game marathons when a player suddenly isn't able to take their turn.

I would but am not worthy.
My feelings on The Demon Rush
Okay I revised the schedule again and I put it in Google Documents this time.

http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0Alb3Dj0u13H7dHpTRE9WVHd1TmNXSTctZzdrbkgyR2c&hl=en

Right now people can only look at the spreadsheet, but I'm considering letting anyone edit it so people can write in when they can do commentary.

I'm really tired but I'll mention the big changes.

-Spreadsheet now has better formatting, IMO.

-I'm now using a formula to calculate the times, I'm not sure why I didn't do that in the first place.

-I cut Mega Man 4 and 5. Sorry, Frezy, but you're doing a lot of games already, and I don't want you to overstrain yourself. Also, Mega Man 4 and 5 are not very popular Mega Man games.

-Added more commentators.

-I added andrewg's games, coop Altered Beast (me and stanski), Sonic 1 race (stanski and mike89!) and altered a couple of times.

Also, I realize a big flaw with the current schedule is that Castlevania and Mario series both have graveyard shift times.
Talk to the Hand
Erm, this is going to sound lame of me in light of my last post, but yeah, is there a way that I can either not commentate (All of) the Castlevania series, or that it could be moved out of said graveyard shift? If not, then it's cool, I'll deal, but it's going to be some pretty sleepy commentary by that point.

Also, I'll have to practice TMNT again at some point, but I'm not too concerned about the time estimate, if only because I think I've overestimated how long Battletoads will take by a couple minutes, so it'll all cancel out. Smiley

Emptyeye: The only reason I put you in for all of the Castlevania games is because you offered. Like I said, the schedule is tentative, and I'm sure I can find someone else who is willing to comment on some games in the series too. I'm sure romscout would be willing to commentate for SOTN, at least.

I could even change the schedule around some so that Castlevania isn't in a graveyard timeslot, but I'd also have to make sure whatever I switch in during that period isn't me or frezy_man (I'm doing SoM early morning and I'm sure I'll want a bit of sleep, and Frezy is just doing a million games).

EDIT: I also updated the first post, though if you've been following this topic, I don't think it has anything new.

Talking of commentary, are we still having a live feed so other people can watch it? I mean there are no problems if your not, you guys have alot on your hands at the moment.

Yeah of course! It's going to be like a speed gamers marathon, where we stream live with a game screen and a commentator cam. We'll also probably have guest streams like the speed gamers had, so people like tiki can still race Frezy_Man during Mega Man 3 and Mega Man X.

It's unacceptable not to have Castlevania at night. Shame on you for even considering such things.

I'm pretty good at getting schedules together. I'll take a look at this later and see if I can help juggle things around and maybe break out a sleep schedule + food time slots. We should get people's preference for a night, evening, day, morning schedule taking into account the popular games/series that we probably don't want at night.

Right now Mike you're getting 4 hours of sleep between TMNT IV and SoM in the morning.

Actually Rane, with this schedule it'd be better to start sleeping at 6 or 7 to be up by 2 to start running.

but it's supposed to be spooky.

Edit:
I think people prefer blocks of time playing as opposed to it being spread out, but I could be wrong. What does everyone think?

I'm mainly going to take the runners into account, and also some commentators; however, commentators may need to be shuffled depending on the needs of the schedule.

I'm curious how two people are running Link's Awakening.

Mike, you missed me on these five for commenting.  I can step aside on MM3 since you have EE and BD on that one already.

Mike, you definitely need to sing at least a couple of these songs at some point (the first is obligatory):

Title song:

Gerudo Valley:

I know Gerudo's theme won't be in any of the Zeldas being played, but it's pretty much the most recognizable music from the series. Also, not many people will have heard the second song, and you could probably rework the lyrics rather easily to make it advertise SDA or something (the first verse is already pretty fitting).

Possibly this Mega Man:

There's room to move things around, but I think this works well, where most of the RPGs are around the same times, so anyone that wants to watch those can adjust their schedules for those days. I took into account some of the commentary, but not all of it.
Talk to the Hand
Mike: Fair enough. If I'm up all night, then I'm up all night. It just may be some strange commentary is all.

Also, do I necessarily have to be there from start to finish for FFVI? I don't know that I'm necessarily up for that, though I'll definitely do some of it.
My feelings on The Demon Rush
Zenic: I'll fit your schedule onto a separate sheet tomorrow and see how it fits. The schedule looks pretty good, except the games seem to be in a less coherent order (e.g. Mega Man and Mega Man X games being far apart from each other).

Good to hear you're being a trooper Emptyeye, though I'm sure I can get someone else to at least commentate for Symphony of the Night. And no, you don't have to be there the whole time for FFVI. All of the RPG commentators should either be rotated between people or have at least two people at once.
My feelings on The Demon Rush
Schedule updated with Zenic's version (check the second sheet at the bottom of the page): http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0Alb3Dj0u13H7dHpTRE9WVHd1TmNXSTctZzdrbkgyR2c&hl=en

I'm honestly liking it better than mine, the only problem I have with it is the placement of a couple of games (X series, Donkey Kong), but it's good and sensitive to most people's schedules overall.

Yes, if you look really closely I made 2 or 3 minor modifications to his schedule, they make almost no difference.

Waiting hurts my soul...
My thinking was to break up mm from mmx to give Frezy some breathing room, and I was also thinking maybe not everyone that's interested in mmx is also interested in mm, but I'm probably wrong.

You could switch the three TMNT games with the MM games for nearly no change (everything before mmx will be moved forward 2 minutes), but then we're not leading with a very strong series.  However, maybe it's better that way, if people start hearing about the marathon they might be sad to know they've missed a strong series like Mega Man.

Donkey Kong can really go anywhere, it's only 2 minutes, and in fact if you move it after MMX and switch as I suggested above there will be no change time-wise to the schedule up to MMX. In that case I was trying to lump stanski's runs together, but if you want it back with DKC, I suggest after it so he's starting at 12:45 instead of 9:30; unless he's a morning person, in which case before would work too. Also, after the DKC series would be a nice lead-in back to the 8-bit Dr. Mario. I really didn't work too hard on the flow for console generation, but I did try to keep Genesis games together.

I'd like to hear some other people's thoughts though and see how commentators feel about it because I tried to be sensitive to them too, but some things I don't think I could take into account. I did try to put Feasel near Lolo for backup and possibly commentary, but I really didn't know what other sorts of games people would like to commentate on that weren't already there.
Edit history:
Enhasa: 2009-10-23 01:22:20 pm
everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
I can't help hearing this problem without instantly thinking about CPLEX (btw this is a joke).

Zenic: I think people definitely would prefer blocks. Prioritizing runners over commentators makes a ton of sense.

XFUBX: Hate to burst your bubble, but we need to make sure that the people there aren't missing anything. Just like how no run can be purely offsite, it wouldn't make any sense to have an offsite commentator either. It would be very offputting to people there.

I don't know if I should be looking at Mike's or Zenic's schedule, but Mike's would have been extremely favorable for me, heh. Going by Mike's schedule, it sets up perfectly for me to commentate or play nonstop from say, Monster Party all the way through Rescue Rangers (that's Monster Party, SOS, Super Tennis, Secret of Mana, Faxanadu, Rygar, Marble Madness, F-Zero, Duck Tales, Duck Tales 2, Rescue Rangers). Then I can do Ristar, Earthworm Jim, and Altered Beast later.

Since nobody has offered and they will all be blocked together, I can commentate for all Donkey Kong games. I can also do all of the Marios, but I'm probably going to sleep or do something else during RPG, and Yoshi's Island is very long so I'd rather bow out before that too. I could do Jackal through Gunstar Heroes before that, but that would be too much in a row for me.

With Zenic's schedule, I could do Contra through Faxanadu. Same Mario as before. Again, miss TMNT due to unfavorable scheduling. Maybe Altered Beast, Ristar, Earthworm Jim as before. Then Duck Tales through F-Zero or Punch-Out. Then DKC through Mario Kart.

Also like to add, I can fill in whenever necessary, like SOTN or for bits during the longer runs. My main personal concern is I do want some time to sleep and do other Magfest stuff like challenges, but we're all gonna have this difficulty.

Edit: BTW lol, stanski is not a morning person. I'm not either, graveyard shift would be preferable to morning actually. Last year at Mike's house we would all be waking up at like 3pm. Except Nate, he's a morning person (which means unfortunately I didn't really see him much, lol). Although, since he's staff but not tied to any of this, I figured he would be hanging around the whole time and helping out technically if needed. That's just an assumption though, I made that up.
Everything's better with Magitek
If we're going with Zenic's schedule, I was wondering if it would be possible to move DKC2 and Dr. Mario to a different day.  As it is now, I'm playing all my games in one day, which would be almost 8 hours total for me.  To me, that seems like a lot, especially since 6 hours of that will be continuous.  Also, that day is Sunday, and I'd been hoping to go to church sometime that morning.  (I found a church meetinghouse about 7 minutes away that has services starting at 8:00 or 11:30 and lasting for 3 hours.)  Mike's schedule is more preferable to me, although it'd mean I'd be staying up pretty late the night before, so I might be kind of out of it the next day.

Anyway, if it doesn't work out, I'll go with whatever you decide, but I'd appreciate it if you could take this into consideration.
Talk to the Hand
I actually liked the Battletoads into TMNT of the first schedule, if for no other reason than it flowed a bit better thematically. This may be overruled by me now being able to watch all of Kareshi's runs without having to stay up all damn night. Tongue So no big loss.

Swapping MM for TMNT...I'll be honest, without even taking games into account, I don't think I'm the sort of top-tier runner who should be leading this thing off (I'm presuming the order of the TMNT games themselves won't actually change). Andrew yes, Freddy yes, me...probably not.
I want off the ride....
Honestly as much as we would want to keep runs together categorically what we should really try to do... is focus the big MEATY awesome runs in the "strong" blocks of time where we will (by highest percentage chance) will get the most viewers. We want them to least one big title played awesomely in this time so they can tell other people and get more in... Thus we need to take that into account.

The current method of keeping the games together by grouping/runner would be good but... we are doing this for charity and we want to gather in people. So if we end up (in key hours) doing obscure or lesser of the more known titles they may be astray. But if we string them in between big titles, people might want to watch more.. ya know?
