welcome to the machine
After procrastinating for about 2 years, I'm finally going to get this run done.  I'm replaying it through multiple times, trying stuff, and when I get home from vacation on Thursday, I'll start recording if I'm ready.  And yes, there's lots of stuff that neither lucid nor tsa got to use in their speedruns, mainly because they hadn't been found yet.  I can detail them (mainly route changes in dungeons 5, 7, 8, and some new tricks) if anyone wants them.

There would be much more in the worth of new tricks if my supply of arrows wasn't so limited.  :/  As I only have 20 arrows until partway into face shrine, any other refills are either impossible to get (I can't go back into the store after stealing the bow) or way too far out of the way... 12 of those arrows are taken immediately by master stalfos, 2 of them by the ball-and-chain trooper, and the rest are for bombarrowing walls in dungeons, pretty much. :/  If anybody at *all* knows of a tree in which a floating arrow pack hides or anything similar, please tell me. >_>  No, neither of the two floating packs in L5 will work, they take too long to get and erase any advantage of using bombarrows more in the beginning. :/

If anyone else knows of something not used in the previous speedruns, please tell me.
Yeah, I said it.
Are you going to be planning your route with the Piece Of Power in mind? A PoP at the right time has the potential to shave entire minutes off of the time, like if you got one after "collecting" Marin, for instance.

That's something I haven't thought of... I'll most likely take whatever comes my way, however.  :/
As you can read in the comments for the present Link's Awakening runs, our friend Mr. Faia here actually somewhat figured out the "secret" behind Pieces of Power.

Note that I am not privy to this secret, and I don't know if he'd be willing to share.

20 Enemies Slain in overworld/dungeon = Acorn of Defense
40 Enemies Slain in overworld dungeon = Piece of Power.

3 hits after getting either cancels your status.  Status ends if you leave overworld to go into dungeon, or vice versa.
Or, you know, TSA could tell you too. Wink

So it's similar to Zelda II's drops (Which I'm either not fully understanding, or I'm bad at counting, as I could never get the drops to match up when I wanted to, but that's another subject) of exp/magic then?
Yes, another Speedrun of this game! Love it.
I'm doing a 100% Speedrun on this game. Getting a time of 1:55... Good or bad?
I have got some problems with the recording so I haven't been able to do it yet.

I haven't looked into it, but as the final time for an any% will fall somewhere between 1:40 and 1:35 (I'm being generous, I expect it to gravitate towards the upper end), I figure that taking 15 minutes extra to gather all the trading items, boomerang, level2 sword, and pieces of heart isn't that bad.

A guy at Zelda Universe claimed a 1:52 100% run on LA...but I think he was full of it.
That's nice. Is there a movie or something on it? Would like to see it then:). Must the boomerang been taken in a 100% run? It saves some time on some places but...
I am bad of which seashell I shall collect. And I don't know so very good routes for all the things. Have to practice more on it I presume.
Ben Goldberg
It's a 100% run, so of course you need the boomerang. TSA wouldn't think the guy's full of it if there was a video, so I'm going to guess there's no video.
The average age of a forum poster at Zelda Universe is something like thirteen, along with the average IQ.  It's sad for me to say, but don't trust someone there without proof as, unfortunately, they're more likely to be just some kid making a random claim.

I should register here...been reading for months, but I never post.  Blah.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
I was active there for about a week once... but the lack of maturity chased me away.
But I don't need to take more than 20 seashells, right? It is boring to run around the whole world for getting them. And it takes a long time as well. As soon I'm able to record, I will do my Speedrun of it.

Yeah, unfortunately there's not much we can do about that, unless you want people to take an IQ/aptitude test or something before joining.

In any case, don't want to bring this off track at all.  I'm quite looking forward to this run,  as Link's Awakening is definitely my favourite handheld Zelda.  I'm surprised we're finding these tricks too, because I always thought it was a very linear game...though people said that about Ocarina of Time a while back, too.

I can't help you out at all, and my cart died a while back, so I'm not going to run this (nor would I really like to; I don't have the commitment), but I do wish you guys luck with both your runs.
Yeah, I said it.
There's really not much for me to add. TSA and I had our own techniques and tricks, so combining the best from both runs alone would get you a fastest time, let alone improvements or incorporating a Piece Of Power strategy.

You need 20 seashells to get the boomerang, right? I havn't played to game in a long long time, so remind me. Do you get anything for collecting more seashells? If not, then I guess you only need 20. You do collect all the bomb and arrow upgrades, right?
No, you need to collect 20 seashells to get the Level 2 sword. Collecting any more won't be of any use, if I remember correctly.
You get the boomerang in some cave at the beach.
Ben Goldberg
Oh, that's right. But if I remember right, don't you need some kind of special item to get to that cave?
Charlie don't surf!
*irrelevant post*

I loved Link's Awakening. The only thing stopping me from playing it again is the way items change. You know, in the menu they won't stay at one spot. That's about the only thing.

k bye.

Right, you need to have the magnifying glass (is this the right name? I only played the German version, so I don't know what it's called in the English game), anyway, it's the item you get after all the trading action. Then, inside the cave you can see the dude who will give you the boomerang.

Are you serious? This is one thing I absolutely loved about Link's Awakening!

Lol, it got annoying for me too.  But I got used to it after I played OOS and OOA.
I am taking all the bomb, magic powder and arrow upgrades, 20 seashells, the trading things and the boomerang. It doesnt take so long time to get the magnifying glass. The most irritaiting thing is the Heart piece in the water at Kanalet Castle. There is no way to get it fast, right?

And the Heart Piece at the fishing game.. is there some way to get the "Heart Piece fish" at the first throw? Have only got it on the second.
welcome to the machine
I think that constitute's radix's definition of 100% (not my personal one, but whatever).

No, I don't know of any way to get them quickly.  Never even tried. >_>
Did my first recording try today... It got really bad all the time.
Had to start it over tons of times in the start. Cause I didn't got 10 rupees fast enough. When I at last got them fast, I forgot that I was trying to do a 100% run. So I forgot to get some Seashells some times...
Will try another time tommorw I think.
