Quote from kirbymastah:
Getting snow bowl is arguably slower than wing, just because of the long animation of eating the enemy, then the incredibly long animation of the first snowbowl. It'd probably save time in 3-1 because it's such a huge stretch of land, and 4-4 because that room sucks to do with wing.

In 7-1, it's close. I tested a single-player route where I ditch wing for snow bowl, then mix for wing at the very start of 7-2. Even with a perfect mix, it's barely slower to get snow bowl for 7-1.

With co-op, it'd be a different category, even if one person was grabbing two controllers. A co-op any% speedrun would be 80% the same as solo (ideally you use only 2 players; any more is unnecessary and only hurts). The first player with wing moves so quickly that what the second player does doesn't matter at all. The only reason to do co-op in any% is:

1. Key areas. A second player can pick up the key while pink wing kirby flies ahead, so player 2 will warp to player 1 with the key. In solo, Kirby is forced to carry the key slowly.
2. Bosses. Even with damage scaling, MK shuttle loops out-DPSs solo wing's dive bombs, but barely. It'd only be viable against vertically high bosses (aka whispy, mr. dooter, maybe magolor/grand doomer).
3. As you mentioned, snow bowl sections.

I honestly think doing any% in co-op is a bit of a waste of time, since it's barely any faster than solo; I doubt it even saves a minute. 100% co-op, though, would be very viable IMO and be considerably faster than 100% solo.

I actually want to plan a route for 100% co-op, though I don't reall have anyone to co-op with... so I guess for any 2 players who want to try it out.

okay thank you guys for answer my question

if this game would have a online function i would run coop with you

too bad Sad

At the AGDQ marathon, yoshifan and I can try an impromptu co-op run or something. Either 100% or any% That would be fun Tongue Though one of us would sit out more than half the time Sad Are you going to AGDQ, ecko?

unfortunately not, from germany its a very long distance

but that would be cool if you and yoshifan do that i look forward to it

ah i forgot, it was cut out from the schedule right?
<(^_^)>
Yeah the game was cut. Oh well
I'd be up for some co-op at AGDQ. Tongue  Also, hopefully we can have some sort of KRtDL run during the bonus stream, since it was one of the later cuts from the main schedule.
<(^_^)>
It might also be cool to do some of the challenge rooms at AGDQ, both dream collection and in the original krtdl Tongue But yeah, casual co-op would be fun!

I need to write up a route haha

Been working on a co-op route:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ane3f9894Sd8dDZXNU95M1hzWlNNc3NKUVFMNHRDQ0E#gid=0

Done up to world 3. For the most part, it follows single player route about 80% of the time; half the time the second player jumps in to collect an energy sphere or activate a switch or something, so P1 doesn't have to backtrack.

Main thing to note: In level 2-4, after Water Galboros, P2 can have an opportunity to mix for wing via the three needle enemies. Normally it isn't worth it in solo, but I'm sure it is here, even though there's a dimensional rift at the end of the level, because P2 can then give P1 wing, and P1 can condor head through the next two big rooms while P2 carries the crystal, and then while P2 has ultra sword. I'd say it's definitely worth mixing for.

But yeah, it's very detailed, and specifies just about every time P2 should jump in and out. P2 is surprisingly active in the co-op route; I feel that we're gonna have tons of fun doing this at AGDQ Wink

Today seems to be a great day for new WRs, huh? Cosmo with TWW, ZFG with Majora's Mask, now this:

1:40:34. It was also en route on getting sub-1:40, since I was an entire minute ahead by the end of White Wafers, but hopes for that were ruined solely because of horrible luck and fights against magolor and magolor's soul. I also lost wing once, but a miracle happened. The first half of the game was practically perfect, world 5-6 were good, world 7 was good except for 7-3 and magolor sucked a lot, cutting away over half a minute <_<

Now I'm probably going to practice yoshifan's new strats, hunt for more new strats to speed things up, and after a few weeks, officially start recording. I will be aiming for sub-1:39, because I'm very confident that it's possible, but will be insanely hard and require a crapton of luck. Timesavers include:

-Riskier but speedier 4-4 strats
-Insta-Moundo kill in 3-3
-Going for instant mix (aka get the first ability that pops up in the mix), meaning only 1/22 attempts will get past the first level (THIS IS NOT GONNA BE FUN)
-Better, I mean, luckier Metal General and Magolor Fights
-Skipping the two spike balls in 6-2
-Even moar fast door entries, as each saves a second

If the above run kept up with the previous WR after world 5, it would've just broken 1:40. Assume my new strats work in levels 6 and 7, and then that's at least 20-30 seconds saved. Address the above... Yeah, I'm confident that sub-1:39 is possible, but I'll have to do actual calculations and watch my run above. I'm basically going to submit a run that gets sub-1:39 though (unless it sucks, and I learn that sub-1:38 is viable and possible; I doubt sub-1:38 is possible though...)
Wow, solid improvement!! Smiley  I didn't think sub-1:39 would be in reach so soon, but I agree that it sounds like it is.

As far as the 1-1 mix, I might recommend considering a 2nd-cycle mix without the HOME button, depending on how well it works for you.  By 2nd cycle, I mean watch the 23 powers scroll by once and try to identify where Wing is, then try to catch Wing the second time it appears on the roulette.  If I'm right, this'll take anywhere from 95 to 259 frames (calculated as (22*4)+7 and (22*4)+(23*7)+10), or 1.58 to 4.32 seconds, of letting the roulette scroll by.  Instant mix, of course, means 0 seconds of letting the roulette scroll by.  That loss could be worth taking, even if it increases your consistency to say, 1/8 instead of 1/23.

Of course, it's your choice; my personal tolerance for pure luck elements isn't very high, so that's why I wouldn't go for the instant mix if I were playing. Tongue
Just say "watch me get perfect mix luck" before each attempt and you'll be fine.
<(^_^)>
Yeah it might not be worth going for 2-4 seconds to go for insta-mix, though I don't know how consistent I am with letting the roulette scroll without using home menu at all. After all, I still have to deal with luck from Trollgalor and his soul <_< and the insta-moundo kills as well.

Two Minutes and 9 seconds of mistakes. Two. Freaking. Minutes. Of. Mistakes. And 31 of those seconds are from trollgalor luck. I lost 10 seconds from losing wing (and then the miracle), and 7 seconds from metal general. Keep in mind, these are underestimates. And these are only counting direct mistakes (though I did count time lost from using home menu for the mix at 1-1, and all the missed door-dives). I didn't even count the time that can be saved from yoshifan's 4-4 strats, which'll easily shave off at least 5-6 seconds. And then some seconds to shave off here and there by tiny optimizations and the almost-impossibly-frame-perfect door dives...

It seems like if we find better strats in other levels, then sub-1:38 may be possible... It'd be insanely hard, and would have to be practically perfect, but it's probably possible. I'm probably not going for it, to be honest; I'd be happy with submitting a run that got sub-1:39, but I may change my  mind if the eventual sub-1:39 run turns out to be crappy by my incredibly high standards for this game.

And yoshifan, I do think saving those 4-8 seconds would be worth it in a submittable run. I know, it'll be very painful, and I may regret saying that (it's very easy for me to say this now, but wait until I do actual attempts), given that there are runkillers all over the game (3-3, 4-4, 6-2, 7-1)... We'll see how it goes. For now I'm just going to practice levels and try to find new strats, as consistency is so much more important in this game than many others, just because of the prevalence of runkillers and risk-taking everywhere. Think it might be a good idea to upload any% strats for each individual level?

Yes, I'd say do as many ILs as you feel like doing (without burning yourself out).  Perhaps focus on the more difficult levels first.
Each IL you do would not only allow you to refine (or confirm) the current strategies, but it would also help you get very familiar with the level.

Might have some interesting stuff in it.

At a first glance, it doesn't have sliding, 1-1 mix, nor the ultra sword animation skip, so it's definitely outdated, but it may have some strats we don't know about. I'll give it a watch sometime and note here if there's anything noteable from it that mine doesn't have.

Here's the aforementioned glitch that happened in our race:

Not sure how it worked. From what I can tell, you condor head into the side of a body of water, then flap somewhere... then you can flap in the water, which is faster than swimming. You can tell I was like "wtf" for a moment after it happened. But whatever it is, it doesn't seem that useful in general because the only areas off the top of my head that let you enter water from the side are that level right there, and dimensional rift areas (which you can't have wing for anyways). MAYBE you can do it out of a combo dive (aka into the top/surface of water), but if you flap, you'd flap up and out of the water, debunking that. Still, I'll look into it anyways.
<(^_^)>
How did nobody discover this glitch... it's so easy...

Keep annotations on and read the description for more details. But basically the glitch where you fly underwater isn't useless; there are only three spots where it can be used to save time (one of which saves less than a second), but it's very easy to do so there's no excuse to not do this glitch. And no, you can only do it out of a condor head (at least from what I've tried), so Metaknight can't do the glitch as far as I know, because he can't condor head (only condor dive, which doesn't work).

Random any% strats that I've found a few new strats for (and made 3-4 suck a lot more than it already does)

Also, mapler, i recall you saying that saying puffed is faster than unpuffing and fallng. Maybe that's true for the GBA kirby games, but in krtdl, puffing is VERY VERY slow. I've tested it, and alternating between unpuffs and falling is horizontally faster than just floating puffed up. I've actually timed it (and not just visually looking, since falling looks faster because... well you're falling and the screen moves down fast), so yeah.

From practicing 100% for the sandy marathon, I got a new WR: 2:47:07. It can be improved by over a minute for sure, and I'm sure sub-2:46 is possible.

The biggest mistake, for sure, was dying by fooling around near the end of 6-5 <___< the death itself wasn't very costly, but of course, I lost wing, which sucks, and I had to fight metal general with ninja (which I wasn't used to). I probably lost the most time from metal general. The mistake was mitigated, though, by doing the wing challenge room before starting Dangerous Dinner, and I don't think I lost more than a minute from it.

I also lost fire in the dark room of 4-5, meaning I had to use Ice as my backup, which is noticeably slower. Probably the second biggest mistake.

Quite honestly though, before my stupid death in 6-5, I was seriously considering submitting the run to SDA, because it was really good, and I got a sexy fast mix in 6-2. Oh well, I know I can do better. I'll probably submit once I get sub-2:46... for now.

I'm encoding my video right now; expect a youtube video of it tonight Smiley
Wow, nice job!
And looking forward to the Sandython run, great to see you're getting in a marathon. Smiley  I'll be sure to catch your run.

very nice looking forward to it

but why no wing mix at 1-1?
<(^_^)>
You lose whatever ability you have when entering a dimensional rift, so mixing for wing isn't worth it.

I've never tried carrying an ability into a dimensional rift before, but I'd imagine it doesn't work either, because you can't carry the true arena's maximum tomato box into that same kind of warp that warps you to the later fights. I'll test it out though.

Chances are, we'll spend some time learning the route (and I need to finish routing worlds 4-7...). My roommate and I will only have time during the next semester (but he has a very chill semester so it'll work out). I don't know if he's still wililng to do this, or if he's having fun yet, but we're trying it out. If it turns into something serious, we'll see if we can get a run out by the end of the academic year.

But there are many, many chances of major timesavers for 100% co-op. In world 1 alone, we saved 20 seconds, and that's with only one hour of practicing and a huge mistake costing 10 seconds, and this is world 1 where the 100% route remains mostly unchanged vs. 100% solo. Tons more can be saved later on (aka keep tornado in 3-2 without having to switch to spear, etc), and a random ball-in-the-park estimate would be about 4-5 minutes saved over 100% solo.
