Hello,
i started to speedrun Judge Dredd on the SNES and i could not find anyone others who also speedrun it.
So i routed it by myself.
I wanna know, if there are any other speedrunnners, who actually run this game and can help me.

Great game from childhood Smiley Good luck with speedrunning it!
yeah i already saw this and my run will for sure faster than this ^^
i aim for sub 45-50
Good to see someone else cares about this game. Running this has been on my to-do list for a long time, but I'm just too lazy and double-tap running is a horrible thing. I have videos for 1-1 through 1-3, as well as the Rico fight. Not sure how much help they'll be, but I remember the Rico strategy being fairly consistent. Also, a couple general tricks:

1. Hitting yourself with the Bounce shot appears to give you temporary invincibility.
2. Jump kicking at the right distance before hitting the ground cancels the landing animation.

The first one I only tested on the first miniboss, but it might be useful elsewhere too. Not sure how easy the second one is, but I know it's useful in 1-3. I used savestates to plan a route for that a long time ago, and I used jump kicks to cancel landing animations near the consoles. I just dropped straight off a ladder and immediately used the console. (Pretty sure the SMV is on a computer with power supply issues, or else I'd get the file to show you.)

Anyway, I'm very interested in this. I don't know how much I can really help you, but if all else fails, you could turn this into an individual level table. The level select code makes that pretty convenient.

Videos: 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, and Rico.

.
nice to hear someone else tried to speedrun it
thx for the 2nd tip, will try it
a few other small tips:
1. getting hit while jumping does not slow you down
2. i am not sure, but bosses do not have invincibility frames, at least the first bosses, you can just spam you weapons and kill them really fast
3. also not sure, jumping ladders up ist faster than climbing and also jump on top of the ladders to not trigger the animation for climbing up a ladder

i learned it until rico and use the same strat in this video
i could get some strats from the other 3 stages also
in 1-2 you can kill the boss really fast with 4 grenades

my time for the level after the race, where you need to kill the 3 ABC bots at the statue of liberty, is 16:30
possibly get a sub 16 for this levels

i am sure i will get this speedrun to the end

edit: did you found any small level skips?
i got one in the first lvl with the abc bots, you can shot 2 of them through walls and save time
do not know how much it actually save
btw. is there a level guide?
(Meant to respond earlier. Sorry.)

Sadly, no. I didn't play around with running the game for very long, and all my attention was focused on individual level runs. The real problem is that I don't know of any place to find complete stage maps. Some of these levels are massive, so planning a route is a huge pain when you have to do it manually. Is that what you meant about the level guide?
i also need a map for the levels to route it better, but i think this game is too unknown to find these maps
i guess i get a complete run in a week with a sub 40 time
with level guide, i mean, you just name the stage like 1, 2, 3, 4 ... or are there actually worlds?
so 1-1, 1-2 ... 4-1, 4-2

Maybe you looking something like this:

1 - Heavenly Haven
2 - Aspen Penal Colony
3 - Cursed Earth
4 - Mega City One
5 - Council Chamber/Mega City One Bike Chase
6 - Statue of Liberty/Janus Lab
7 - Statue of Liberty/Janus Lab
8 - Janus Lab/Sewer System
9 - RC4 Processing Plant
10 - City Towers
11 - Justice One
12 - Cursed Earth Crash Site/Dead World

Each level has three maps or missions. Those missing from the final game are as follows:
• 1.1 • 3.3 • 4.2 • 6.2 • 7.2 • 8.2 • 9.2 • 10.3 • 12.1 • 13.1 • 13.2 • 13.3
thank you, i was looking for that

Please post video (or screenshot) of this small shortcut.

Sounds awesome, i look forward to see it!

with this weapon in picture 1, you can skip many paths in this game
you will see it in my video later
my last run was a 40:45 with many mistakes, so i can get easily sub 39 or 38
i will record my next runs and then upload it

i am happy with this run, not quite perfect, but it is okay.
i have no idea, what happened at 15:50, never happened before
but when i know, how to perform this glitch, it will be easier to do this skip.
normally it is harder to kill this enemy.

and i guess this is world record, if you find a better run, let me know it
Very good run man! thumbsup

Well since earlier nobody did speedrun for this game - it is WR for sure.
But if you like running it not stop at this mark. Spirit of speedrunning is push game to the limit! Keep running and you definitely can improve it.

Picking up useless extra lifes (for example in 12:36 or 13:40) slightly cut the eye.
I know you got them for additional safety and it was really fast 1 sec or so. It is almost nothing.
However hardcore speedrunner should always run forward with poker face even if extra life is only in 1 millimeter in wrong direction.
Such small details is difference between very good run and superb. It is like a seal of quality.
yes, in future i will cut a few lives from the route and also cut few weapons
there are still many deaths, but we will see
sub 35 will happen
Great run! I like it very much. Good job bro.

Even now it is very well made run.  Indeed many deaths + some mistakes, so 2-3 minutes definitely can be saved if try harder.

Btw since you play on emulator try record movie by built in recorder:
File > Record AVI
Usually results have good A/V quality. It will be yet more pleasant to watch run without side-window with timer and regular disappearance of sound Smiley
will do it next time
do you know, how can i build a small timer into this video without video editing?

Nope. But why you want put timer in video? Run length is easily calculated without timer. And video without any interference is more esthetic for eyes Roll Eyes

P.S. Kinda strange, but i noticed that in Rico fight by Molotov there are exactly the same short disappearance of sound as you have. Probably it is just defect of ROM Sad
you mean this short silence at 19:56
thats not a sound bug or something like a bug
at a certain point it triggers it and there will be a moment of silence, thats normal

ok then i will record it with the emulator recorder and when i get sub 36 or 35, i will upload it
Been keeping an eye on this as I just recently picked up this game and was debating on giving it a try for speed running. Good run! Will definitely have to use it as a baseline.
that is cool, feel free to ask questions here and upload your attempts

I made some tas test and can confirm that jumping ladders up is really slightly faster than climbing.
I did TAS for full game, may be something from it can be useful for unassisted speedrunning:
