OK! I talked to Ms. Kunzer over at Doctors Without Borders, and while we couldn't get a PayPal set up, we are getting a letter from them so that we don't have a repeat of the CARE fiasco when I transfer funds to them. So Doctors Without Borders is set now.
Uyama also got Lindsey King (TSG artist) on board for making a banner. Yay! The title we decided on is Japanese Relief Done Quick, just to keep it simple and similar to past marathons while staying relevant to the focus. The banner will have Dr. Mario and Princess Zelda, as well as Ness and Meat Boy due to the massive requests for their games last marathon.
Everyone seems fine with the date, so it's now officially Apr 7th through Apr 10th. We can of course let people do bonus streaming for a while after the marathon concludes (still would need to talk in the IRC about when it's ok to use that stream) but everything within the official time frame will be scheduled. The exact starting and ending points will be determined when I'm seeing who's available and when. It'll be about 72 hours though. I'm probably going to cut off adding runners after Sunday, so if you want to run something, let me know by then.
As of right now it looks like I'll have to be the one making a promo vid, so I'll brainstorm on it this evening after class and try to have it finished this weekend. If anyone has any ideas for this, let me know. I'd greatly appreciate it.
Maybe the promo vid could use some footage from SDA runs that use Japanese text, coupled with text overlays about helping the country that brought us these awesome games?
if you don't have a person doing meat boy, i can do it i suppose. or we could get a race going between a couple of us who are working on it (or you, fuck) time for any% would be 30 minutes for a trainwreck, mic and skype are cool with me.
availability would be like noon-5pm on thursday, 3pm-8pm friday, noon-2am saturday, noon-midnight sunday roughly i guess (EST). probably a few times in there i wouldn't be available but it shouldn't be too hard to work out.
oh also, i don't know if it's really an issue or not but i can't stream in the greatest quality because of bandwidth limitations... it'd be perfectly watchable, just a little sub-par. hope that's ok.
Stuff wat I can do (all times not including setup and really conservative).
Metal Gear Solid 2 Tanker (Extreme 100% dog tags with added perfect stats if I can do it): 20 minutes Tanker (Extreme Any% with PS): 12 minutes Full game (Extreme Any%): Not sure, 2 hours, perhaps more. Snake Tales (Perfect stats): 1 hour, maybe a little more.
For MGS2 there are of course other people here that run it; Cody obviously, and Adnan and Merlin who I haven't seen in a while. Any of them, assuming they're practiced up, could destroy me on the full game.
Uplink Low%: 30 minutes 100%: 1 hour
Could also do Streets of Rage (45 minutes), though I'm no Greenalink. But if he wants to do it, perhaps a race?
I'm not sure if I have a mic that's any good. I can use it on Skype, but everywhere else it's way too quiet.
Tentatively available at any time, but I might be in work starting that week so that might get cut down to the weekend.
Just some additional info (sorry for not providing it before). I have a mic, but I'm terrible at commentating while I'm playing. I don't have Skype, but as long as it's free, I'm sure I can have one set up by that weekend. I'd love to commentate on other people's runs, but I'd rather not do it alone since I'd be very nervous the whole time.
The times I'm available on Sunday would be more like 4 am to 8 am PST, and 9 pm+ on Saturday is fine.
Feel free to cut Hercules, it's the not the most interesting game. The first 30 minutes has 1 boss fight in the first 7 minutes, and then non-stop back tracking. I was just throwing it out there in case we needed to fill up more time.
There are two more interesting games that I've been working on previously that I could do fairly quickly. It looks like they're unnecessary, but I'll mention them as options: Saturn Bomberman (2 hours) and Miner Dig Deep (XBLIG - 3 hours [best so far is 2:20, but that's with good luck]). I have yet to seriously work on these as I was shipped Hercules, and have been focusing on that. Let me know now if you'd rather have one of these games in and I'll get to practicing them into a more polish state. To give an idea, Saturn Bomberman when complete should be close to 1:30 and Miner Dig Deep could be 1:45 - 2:00 (I've tested the least with this).
A game i could run would be Maze of Galious for PC
Time would range from 1:00:00 to 1:25:00 depending on luck.
Times I could do this would be April 8 and 9 and about 10 pm - 2 am Central time.
I have a mic but its been acting kinda funky lately so it could might work and it might not. I can use skype. However I must warn you I am the most monotone person in the world.
My streams are kinda choppy. I use Scfh Dsf to stream most of the time. Is there another program I could try. Or would this quality be acceptable.
I could do Metal Warriors in 35 minutes or so but I don't know if my stream capabilities are good at all. My pc is powerful but perhaps not my connection. My SNES is broken so it would have to be on emulator. I can do it at any time though.
If you have time to put me in, I would really like to run Sonic 06, Sonic's story for this marathon, (Edit:) I can also run Amy's story in Sonic adventure.
my best time so far is 1:24:39, but I would say put it down as 1:45, so I have 20 extra minutes.
I can use my mic, and skype, but I can't stream direct game audio.
http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/13289519 is what it would look like, but I have better audio now, you can hear skype a lot better now. (it goes right into the stream now.)
my commentary on my run would be a lot better then is in that video, because I really didn't care about my commentary at that time.
I can do it any time Thursday before 3am est. I have yet to know what time I will be free Sunday, I'll have to get back to you on that, but I can't on Friday/Saturday.
Alright, I'm in for this! I can play or commentate over Skype after 4:30 EST on Friday. Possible games:
-Castlevania 1/3/4 - all characters open for 3 as usual and I'll even allow all routes this time! Just copy the marathon estimates for those games, maybe add a couple minutes for 3/4 to be safe? -Maximum Carnage - will take donations for each Spidey/Venom pick, and I'll go with 35 minutes as an estimate in case people pick Spidey near the end. -Jim Power: That Goddamn Buzzsaw Noise in 3-D - a good pick for the bad game block IMO, especially since I can talk about all the weird history with the game. I'll say 32 minutes for the estimate, and I won't charge the smart bomb except on bosses and 1 or 2 other key spots. -Bad Street Brawler - one of the all-time classic bad NES games, and instantly hilarious even to those who have never played it; also has a bunch of interesting history between the Power Glove and the DOS/Amiga versions. I'll put 20 minutes as the estimate. -Skull & Crossbones - has a notoriously difficult reputation among those who've played it but is extremely obscure, so I'm not as sure about this one. At least it's short...I'll say 14 minutes for the estimate if anyone cares. -Final Fantasy Mystic Quest (RTA) - yeah, I know, but you'd be surprised how well-liked this one is nowadays. It's also very consistent to run thanks to continues and takes little effort on my part, so I'd be down to man a graveyard shift with this. 3:30 for the estimate, with an outside shot at sub-3 and submission to SDA if Pazuzu behaves.
That's about all I've got. Astyanax isn't bad enough to belong in the bad game block and nobody knows it, so I left it off.
I'll admit I haven't read the whole topic yet, but I'm at least interested in playing something for this marathon. They won't make the cut I'm sure, but here's what I could do:
God Hand (Easy mode, pretty casual given the short practice time) - 2:15.00 including setup? I'm sure it would be lower, but just throwing it out there for now. Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow - 1:25/1:30. Nobody wants this, so I'm just putting this here to make this post less useless.
The only other thing I have to mention is that if either of my games makes the cut, I'd need to camp in Mike's basement. I can't stream otherwise. :/
This popped up amazingly quickly. Kudos to rom for spearheading this thing, though I personally think 2 weeks is a pretty short timeframe to work with. Should be able to make it work though.
As for what I can play, all about a Super Meat Boy race, though if races are deemed to complicated for this thing I'm perfectly willing to cede it to joe, he'll likely put on the better show, I can only hope to be competitive at this point (though with two weeks to work with. . .). 30 minutes is a good estimate, if a race set up is involved, though, might want to bump it to 35. I was thinking maybe try for a good ending SS, but two weeks probably isn't really enough time to get the dark world down well enough.
I can also do basically anything I did for the last marathon, but really out of those the only one I think might be worth me doing is Legend of Zelda. It's likely we'll have someone better suited for LttP step up, and the rest of my games are kinda niche (except DMC, but saving my salty runback for January).
Have mic, have skype, I'll commentate on pretty much anything.
Assuming a Thursday evening start, my availability would be roughly as follows:
Thursday: 7PM - midnight Friday: 7PM - midnight or so Saturday and Sunday: Basically anytime
I'll chime in about promotion later, but lets just say for now willing to help.
I'm still trying to figure out how to stream, so I can't help with running games, but I can help out in regards of commentary.
Unless if something comes up in the next few days, I can help with commentary After 6 on Thursday & Friday and anytime on Saturday and sunday.
I got a camera and I got a mic. I also have that special project I'm working on as well (Highlight Reel) that could also help as a cooldown period if you want.
oh you've got to be fucking kidding me. something came up today that my dad might need my help going to some person's house to help move junk. just the coincidence that it falls on the weekend of this marathon.
I still don't know the exact details because I might not have to go with him due to the situation at my house. Of all the times where I'd be glad to get out of the house, why on that same weekend? Still, I might be able to do both depending on the schedule of both affairs. Just wanted to give a head's up just in case I wouldn't be able to do this at all.
I've wanted to participate in one of these marathons since the first one. Yet my utterly average gaming skills tend to disqualify me from actually playing. Also, I have no knowledge of how to stream gameplay. However, I'll commentate on any damn thing you'd allow me to, even if I don't know anything about the game.
Times: As far as I know, I'm available any of those days, usually from about 8 AM until midnight PST (or PDT, or whatever the hell it is nowadays). I could stretch it maybe an hour or two in either direction, if necessary. Skype: HAS! Webcam: NO HAS!
So if you're looking for some random guy to do commentary who barely contributes anything to the forum or site in general, look no further!
Argh, that weekend is RIGHT after I move, and I won't have my streaming computer on hand since it'll still be in transit...you don't seem like you need to fill time, so I can't say I'll try to rig up my mom's computer to stream. I don't even know if the little thing could handle it, anyway.
So then, I won't mind being a commentator if you need anyone. I've got an okay webcam (built into my MacBook) and Skype available. As of now it looks like my flight will be on the 7th so I'd be free the rest of the weekend. I could also do some promotion, if anyone has banner ideas I could probably make something, and I'll try to drop word on the Backloggery and see if I can get some people there shouting messages about the stream.
I just realized there are two other games I can do. I know scheduling is tight as is, so feel free to reject these offerings.
Gunstar Heroes - 0:50:00 (worst I get is around 47 minutes with bad Dice Palace luck so this should include at least a bit of setup)
There were some people who were disappointed this game was cut at agdq, so having the game for this marathon would make up for it. Also, I hardly need to practice for this game, it's pretty much second nature for me now.
Contra: Shattered Soldier - 0:45:00 (if doing A/S-rank) - more like 35 if I'm not doing all of the stages.
This game doesn't take me much practice, and it is considered a hard game, so yeah.
Ok, since Venick's doing Sonic's story in Sonic 06, I'll do Shadow and Silver. So these are my games:
-Sonic 4 (My ILs total 18 minutes, so allowing room for mistakes, safer strats, and cutscenes/results screens, theres no way I can see it taking longer than 0:35... that's my safest estimate) -Sonic 06 (Shadow/Silver stories) (3.5 hours should be enough) -Metroid Prime (race with Miles, unless races aren't feasible with the stream setup) (2 hours)
Darkwing Duck, you'd be welcome to stream at my house.
Edit: I thought of some more promotion I could do. I've kept in contact with the organizer of GEEX (a gaming convention here in Utah). I know he did some promotion for AGDQ, so I'll see if he can help with this as well.
I'd love to help this cause if I can. Even though I've never tried streaming before, I'm willing to learn and run some stream tests in the coming week. If I could participate in this marathon then I'd be honored. Looking at the thread so far though, the schedule may have already filled up twice over, so if there's no room then I'm fine with watching the show and donating.
I'm willing to run: - Super Mario Galaxy, 61-Star run as Luigi (safe estimate, 3 hours 20 minutes) - (Maybe) Dr. Mario 64, any kind of run. Either that or Dr. Mario Online Rx (Wii). But I'll yield to the other Dr. Mario people if there's enough Dr. Mario going on.
If I get to run, I'd say my preferred times are Saturday any time, Sunday any time, and Friday after 6 PM Eastern (3 PM my time). If need be, I guess there's also Thursday after 12 AM Eastern (9 PM my time).
Hey rom, I actually have a bunch of PC games of various ages and conditions I no longer play or need, and I kind of have to make some room here anyway...would you like the entire lot as one big donation prize?
It looks like I have: Diablo II (With strategy guide) and D2: Lord of Destruction (Complete, I think) Wing Commander II Deluxe Edition (With instruction manual) John Romero's Daikatana (With instruction manual) Tetris Worlds (With instruction manual) Star Trek Starfleet Academy DOOM Collector's Edition SimCity 2000 (With Instruction Manual) and Streets of SimCity (Which I never opened; these were a 2-pak...the SC2K manual is from a previous version I had) Neverwinter Nights Platinum (Complete) Warcraft III and Warcraft III The Frozen Throne (Both complete; the latter not even opened by me) Starcraft Battle Chest (Complete) Wizardry 8 (Complete) EDIT TO ADD: Space Quest Collection (In box, with..well, everything it came with. Which wasn't a lot)
You can check out some pictures of the collection here.
One disclaimer: I am not your tech support for this collection. The games are all on CD, but I make no guarantee that getting them to work on systems of today will be as easy as "insert CD, hit 'install', play game". In particular, Wing Commander II Deluxe Edition will likely require some DOSBox shenanigans to get up and running.
The way I see it, someone gets an awesome prize for a good cause, and I can offload this stuff a lot more conveniently than trying to do it on EBay or even in the Trading Post. But it's up to you, I know none of these games are likely to actually be in the marathon.
I'd be willing to do Contra III, any category you want. We can see about doing a race. I'll start testing it with Hurblat and let you know what we can do. If it doesn't work out, I guess you can pick between Mike, Hurblat, and myself? Any % 18:00 (Worst case scenario) Low % 26:00 (Worst case scenario) Randomly Selected Weapon Run <23:00 (I'm down for anything) Death Abuse (Too risky, possibly a bonus stream attempt) Time: Mornings 7-11 AM PST Evening 10:30PM -1AM PST
