Yeah i found the game difficult too
but for the date the game came out it looks pretty good and has a decent gameplay.
well .. enemies are stupid ofcourse...
I've managed to play the game thru once (with a hint book) *lol*
i cant wait to see the first videos of Goggen's speedrun on this game!
'Tis the newb.
Yeah the graphics arent all that bad considering the release date. This run should be very cool when its released.

I love all these Indiana Jones games, and its nice to know you will follow this through all the way (proof being Istanbul :p)

Apparently I spent more time on this game's Babylon, but it sure didn't feel like it...

(...) best of luck!

Thanks!

Roy_Hess:

I hate to disappoint, but I don't have the time or the internet connection to upload work-in-progress videos. Hopefully though, you'll still enjoy getting the whole thing wrapped up in one huge package rather than small chunks!

Blazen:

Well, it's got one of the worst engines for its time, without skeletal animation. But they made the most of it, and even today there are games that makes outdoors look uglier. Not to mention the vehicle sections, being pure genius (and pure headache for speedrunning).

As for this run's release...

NEWSFLASH!

I've recorded a couple more segments of Tian Shan River, the total by now up to 5. I'm currently up to the last rafting section of the level, wth just one candle to go. I will probably re-do #5, and then I *should* be able to make it to the end in one more segment. The randomness of the paddling section is annoying, so it's been broken up almost wherever it can be.
As for when these re-runs and -runs will take place, or for that matter, genuine progress, that's a bit up in the air. One of my hard drives is dying (slowly and painfully) so I've had to stuff the recording drive with stuff. Good news are that I'll probably get a new drive soon, but *when* is another matter. Probably a couple of weeks.
Further news: I'm now in summer break, so I'll probably find the time to run for a bit, once I get the hard drive space for it.

i really should install Indiana Jones again to play it :g
There is no victory without combat
I don't Think I will, cause I hate the crappy Keyboard only controls in 3D Games. I hated it in Tomb Raider, I hated it in some bad, early fps (anyone knows Debth Dwellers? Or The Catacomb Abyss? Never mind...) and I still hat it today. I think this is the reason why I didn't finish Soul Reaver...but wait a minute, I've got a Gamepad now...back to topic.
Seeing Goggen so enthusiastic about the controls makes me belive he is better in this than me. So Goggen: Good Luck, also I know you don't need it

Back in time i played Indiana Jones on my good old Thrust 6 Buttons Gamepad with Analog Stick :I

Are there any videos online yet? I would love to help, but I don't remember the levels in my head. Maybe if somebody runs through them in video, I can remember.

Ah, the perfected art of the bump. I was planning to bump this thread myself one of these days, once I'd gotten around to it, although I obviously haven't, and by now it's definitely almost embarassing. Luckily, having it be brought up by someone else provides a nicely non-embarassing (possibly just "barassing", if that's even legal) time for an update.

So, in brief in as much detail as I usually bestow on my posts, progress update:
None. No progress.
Still stuck on segment 5 (of 7 or so) of Tian Shan River, Tiny-one-person-inflatable-Red-Army-patrol-raft-although-still-signal-yellow-and-also-still-one-person-only-for-some-reason-oh-and-the-paddle-is-also-inflatable-apparently Trek. And I'm going to re-do segment 5 on top of that. And also I haven't actually touched the game since then because of other concerns. So nothing new since June.
Yeah.
Embarassing.

In other news, I have acquired the Legendary Hard Drive Of Lotsaspace, with an additional Identical Legendary Hard Drive Of Exactlyasmuchspace, two 500-gig beasts (...Of Quitealotofspace). One for downloading, and one in principle dedicated solely to speedrunnin'. And yeah, they're both full up. Damn you broadband internet connection. Of Lotsastufftodownload. Of LikeoldmoviesthatIreferenceinmyruncommentaryandwhatnot.
Oh, and I've got a queue of games to play through and a big school project goings-on, which basically means that I have about half an hour a day for gaming. Or anything else. Damn you school project.
So, essentially, this is on an Indefinite Hold Of Couldtheoreticallystartupagainreallysoonbutprobablynot.

Yes, I did have fun with this and that Stuff Of Otherstuff.

Basically, whenever I'm donw with the school project, and I get the time, and I'm done with the downloading, and watching whatever I've downloaded, and playing whatever games have piled up, then I can get around to speedrunning some more.
Or whenever I'm too bored to do any of those other things.
So, basically, possibly really soon. Or not.

...Yeah, it was embarassing anyway...

good that you didnt forgot about it :-)

I hated the Thian Shan River level because of the stupid boat and how you control it.

I often ran out of repair kits (I still dont know how he repairs it, even if all air is nearly out :D)
yeah and the route is also weird to find all four candles in fastest time without bumping into rocks or drown in the water.

Yeah, close going there for a second. You may have re-awakened interest in the nick of time, like some quick-thinking, problem-solving, world-travelling adventurer type in a leather jacket who saves the day, beats the bad guys, saves the girl, and slides under doors just before they close. You know, like MacGyver.

I hated the Thian Shan River level because of the stupid boat and how you control it.

Yeah, it handles basically like a, well, boat. On ice. In a hurricane. On a slope. Up-side down.
Or more descriptively, like a bumper car. On ice.
My technique for this has basically been:
1. Don't hit anything.
2. If When I do hit something, re-start the segment. Unless it's one of those bumps that actually bump the right way, in which case, continue.

I often ran out of repair kits (I still dont know how he repairs it, even if all air is nearly out)

You can carry up to three Raft Repair Kits(tm), which are found in the guard hut upstream. I didn't actually know about that on my first play-through, which still lingers in me somewhat with the following strategy:
If When you *do* puncture your boat, you can actually pretty much always make it to the next landing. Pretty much everywhere. Really. I'm going to abuse the heck outta that one on the last rafting segment. Y'know, unless I actually *miss* the jagged rocks everywhere.
As for how the raft repair kits actually work: It's obvious that they are re-inflated with a pressurized air cannister that also contains an aerosol sealing glue that would react with the water outside the hole (as the air streams out, as it would, in a pressurized inflatable raft), to form an effective barrier and seal the leak. Y'know, like in that one episode where MacGyver is trapped in the submarine and inflates a rubber buffer thing with life raft air to force the hatch open, and in that episode where he fixes that jeep radiator with egg-whites that solidify when it leaves the holes.
Man, MacGyver is awesome.
However, the real question is how the equally-or-greater-awesome Indiana Jones re-inflates the inflatable raft *repeatedly*... Hm... Maybe because he's just that awesome?

yeah and the route is also weird to find all four candles in fastest time without bumping into rocks or drown in the water.

No, not really. There are just two forks, for a total of four options, only two of which have to be taken to arrive at all four candles (one leads nowhere, one leads to just one, the third one leads that previous one and one more (in inverse order) and the last one actually goes to two with no fuss, just like that). Of course, you'd have to go at it a couple of times to figure out which ones to go to. Which I had written down somewhere but keep losing track of. I actually have to watch the semi-complete level speedrun for it now...
As for the rocks: Not really something you have to bother with, as it takes so long to run out of air, and it gets re-charged (somehow) when you land.
And as for the drowning: I'm pretty sure he actually dies of instant hypothermia, since he *can* swim. Although in the Peru level, he drowns instantly, in the roughs,so maybe not. Or the friction on the frothing water is great enough to actually scald him, leading him to die of hyperthermia instead. And then it cools down after the roughs again.
Also there's piranhas. Those things bite. And apparently survive the scalding.

Anyway, the important thing is this: You ought to buy the complete seven-season box set of MacGyver.
[Not even remotely paid for by The Society To Re-Elect-MacGyver, And By That We Mean To Buy The Seven-Season Box Set. Out now on DVD. Buy it now!]

Maybe somebody could draw a map so you can picture the fastest route. Is there a way to skip the landing animation? This would cut of like three seconds each time, so 6 seconds for each landing. Also, I don't remember there being any soldiers at the landings with the chandle, so the fastest way would be just to run past a ny spiders you might encounter (I don't really remember, it's been a long time, I might even re-install the game to make routes 'n stuff, but I don't know if it's possible to run Indiana Jones at an XP pc?)

I think that you plan the route like this. Go to the landing as slow as you want, step on the landing, quicksave, and get the chandle as fast as you can. This way, you can get a perfect time for each chandle and you can worry about getting there when the time is ready.

Neverdown:

No need: Left left left, then left right. Didn't take long to figure that one out, either.

Is there a way to skip the landing animation? This would cut of like three seconds each time, so 6 seconds for each landing.

Not to my knowledge, no. Also, 5 seconds, actually. But sadly, no.

Also, I don't remember there being any soldiers at the landings with the chandle, so the fastest way would be just to run past a ny spiders you might encounter

There a couple o' troopers at the guard hut, which I run past. As for the spiders, way ahead of you there, already past-runned.

([...] but I don't know if it's possible to run Indiana Jones at an XP pc?)

Works. *But*, the trick to get it working if it doesn't is to run Windows Media Player and Internet Explorer in the background. Something to do with a "tick counter", or "appeasing the gods" or something. And even then, you'd be in luck. As it is, I'm terribly afraid of upsetting the fragile balance, so I haven't touched my set-up, hardware or driver-wise, in over a *year*. Which is much. For me.

I think that you plan the route like this. Go to the landing as slow as you want, step on the landing, quicksave, and get the chandle as fast as you can. This way, you can get a perfect time for each chandle and you can worry about getting there when the time is ready.

Actually the exact strategy I'm using, since the only really random element is the rafting. Or, well, the only really *more* random element, which is why it would be so upsetting to screw it up on foot.
Furthermore, the landing actually provides a very nice place to quicksave, since there's a tiny little window of dead time maneuvering into position that easily accomodates a quicksave without slowing down or screwing up the flow. And causing problems. Other places are ladders and such, although this level is all-landing, all-the-time. Except when it's disembarking. All-landing-or-disembarking, all-the-time. Most-of-the-time, anyway. At times.

Although now, the real obstacle is, in order of obstacleness:
School
Downloads taking up the FRAPS disk
Watching the movies that I'm downloading
Other games
The effort to actually re-configure the system for speedrunning, what with the starting FRAPS and the graphics settings and the switching of the monitors and the starting up of the game and whatnot.

So, I guess we'll see when I have the time to get around to it.

thats uncool!

I have digged out my ORIGINAL Indiana Jones Game and installed it onto my HTPC. Running the game without having MWP running in the background is almost impossible.
With WMP it runs fine... i expected problems when such old games run at 300-600fps
Now iam at the thian shan river at this ruski border tower and when i try to open the door the game crashes :f
what is the newest version of that game? I have installed patch 1.2!

cant really enjoy the game

Me: Patch 1.2. Suggestions: Try running with IE running, *or*, if possible, walk around the door. Occasionally, I've run across broken level scripts. One of which actually threatened the run, but I managed to fix it somewhat magically. Basically, the best bet is to try to circumvent them somehow, *or*, to do something that the game expects you have already done even though it may not be necessary.
Or just plain wild guessing. Look at the volcano one...

cant really enjoy the game
random crashes, sometimes i dont have control over the game anymore. How's running on your rig?

Cool. My running is cool. Cool runnings. What with the Jamaicans and the bobsleds and suchlike.
I did have a few hick-ups. And here they are!:

PROBLEM:
The game doesn't work well in XP. Some levels don't load, the menu doesn't work, and the spinning pick-up 3D pop-up hangs the game.
SOLUTION:
Having both Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player running in the background. It has to be both. For some reason.

07 - Palawan Temple
PROBLEM:
This level didn't work at all due to some bug happening when loading Indy's model. (Specifically, in the opening cutscene, after blasting the wall.) *However*, this seems to be a feature of the gear he's wearing; S&W and machete was broken, Tokarev and SMG worked.
SOLUTION:
Redo previous level, stay away from (presumably) the machete toward the end.

14 - Nub's Tomb
PROBLEM:
When activating the elevator after getting the battery, the game crashes. This happens both when zapping the outlet next to the counterweight, as well as when removing the block from the elevator. (The problem complains about the camera, and that some "thing" [actual quote: "pThing1"] seems to be out of bounds. My guess is that the camera is trying to look at something that's bugged its way out of the level.)
SOLUTION:
Zapping the other outlet first. No, I don't know why. Maybe the camera target isn't activated until that outlet's camera target has?

15 - Infernal Machine
PROBLEM:
The zappy floaty enemies sometimes crash the game when killed by SMG.
SOLUTION:
Not kill them. Or kill them with other weapon.
PROBLEM:
Shooting CIA-dude with SMG, rifle or shotgun often crashes the game.
SOLUTION:
Use them anyway. Segmentation, y'know.

The is working again, must be a random crash. Sometimes

Another bug is that Indy seems to swim around in the level when painting stuff on the wall.

I will play it a bit this evening.

Do you know how to skip the push-the-block animation?
Instantly as he does down slowly in front of the block who has to be pushed - push forward (or backwards). This skips the slow "going-down-to-push" animation.
"Time to go to work..."
Roy_Hess:

Nice to hear. Except for the sometimes *not* working part Which is a problem that doesn't show up here, unless I forget IE and/or WMP.  The crashes I do get are pretty much always specifically triggered, although *how* can take some time to uncover.
Also: Is this what the young'uns these days call grammar? For shame...

Another bug is that Indy seems to swim around in the level when painting stuff on the wall.

I haven't noticed *that* bug, ever, although on the other hand, neither have I been drawing all that much.
I don't really have the spare time to draw on the walls like some graffiti artist/vandal, on two levels, since that would be something that I could only do while waiting for something, and even then, it wouldn't be any faster, the ultimate goal. However, it might look cool, so I'll try to remember to try some o' thems if the opportunity arises.
Interesting trivia: The chalk actually shows up on your map. Unfortunately, the map is useless, since you can't move around on it. Still, pretty kewl.

I will play it a bit this evening.

That's what *she* said!
(Heh. Hehe. ...Heh.)

Do you know how to skip the push-the-block animation?
What push-the-block animation? The one where Indy just stands there like some dope instead of pushing? Which sometimes happens, in spite of me spamming the use and forward/backward key like natural instinct tells me to? The-, hang on, you said something more.

Instantly as he does down slowly in front of the block who has to be pushed - push forward (or backwards). This skips the slow "going-down-to-push" animation.

Actually, that never occured to me.
That is, the notion that you press use and *then* up.
I've always, every playthrough, pressed use and up/down simultaneously, since it just seemed natural.
Remembering way back to the reviews of the game when it came out (yes, my memory works like this), it *was* actually a point of pride that LucasArts had "perfected" the controls of Tomb Raider in this way, where it was (aparently) required. It's faster in Indy3D to do so, just more difficult and somewhat more bugged (occasionally Indy won't do anything at all, just the readying animation). Also you miss out on the smoother animation if you do, *and*, it is the aforementioned difficult.
Which is something I've never benefitted from, since I've always just done it the Tomb Raider way in spite of never having played the game.
Except the new ones. Tomb Raider Legend and Anniversary, which I'm trudging through as we speak.
(Or, before and after, we speak, as she's falling to her death enough as it is without me typing away instead of keeping her alive and such.)

It's like Indiana Jones! With breasts!

And how!

Okay thats crap now...........

Iam at this point where you have to use both the red and the green tiki statue to open a gate
at this moment where the door has opened the game crashes

And no it really doesnt matter if i have Internet "Exploder" and/or WMP running in the background.
damn!

EDIT:
okay i found a workaround for this case
while cutscene is running i ALT+TAB out of the game, shut down WMP and got ingame again, let Cutscene end, do some steps forward, ALT+TAB out and start WMP again.

Why games cant just run.. Smiley
I was so worried that i cant play the game anymore further.

PROGRESS!

Yes, I betcha didn't see that one coming!
Out of the blue!
Completely by surprise!
Unexpected!
Not foreseen by anyone!
And so on.

Yes, I finally managed to clear out my frapsing disk, no small task for half a terrabyte and 30,48% of my total system. Also, I finished off a few games, and ran out of movies, and I was bored. So it was either this, or C&C Tiberian Sun.
[Half-a-mission of Tiberian Sun I had started on six months ago...]
Yes, speedrunning Indy!
Which I *also* haven't gotten around to for half-a-year.
Yeah, sorry about that.

Anyway, *what* progress, you may ask? (Or not, you uninquisitive you...)

Well, finished off Tian Shan River!
...And that's it.

Wasn't that worth six months of waiting, eh?

Now, before you get all excited and jump from joy, (if you do not know any Joy, try Joe, or Joan, or any other Jo*-style named persons) and expect to see all kinds of wonderful progress continuing to hit you at the blistering rate you have experienced, you may need to brace yourselves a bit.
Shambala Sanctuary (previously known as Shambala Seaside Sanctuary and Seashell Store, now under new management) has a bug, wherein the first cutscene plays out, then returns the camera to the cutscene's opening viewpoint, and not *yours*. Now, I have run across this bug before, and obviously fixed it, and I did toy around with the menu a bit and then afterwards it kinda worked, but I *don't* remember how I fixed it, way back in '07 sometime. Them's were the days. So, I may be spending some time tinkering with fixing it some proper way, or give up and just segment it so that I have one segment just for that cutscene, and edit in the next segments after that.
Hopefully, this shouldn't be much more of a delay than what you're used to.
FOREBODE!

Anyway, without further adoo, the progress report:

03 - Tian Shan River
14 minutes, 34 seconds
Route: First left, then left, then first candle. Then right, and second candle. Then back up, and left, then right for third candle, and then downstream for fourth candle. Then back up, and out of the level.
Minor: At the stompers, after you jump from stomper #1, you can long-jump from that platform to stomper #2.
Minor: You can longjump from the bridge of the "lighthouse" back down a bit.

Levels done:                          03/17  (17,65%)
This level, plan:                      17/310 (05,48%)
Segments, this level:                  8      (Yes, I *did* get frustrated, why do you ask?)
Average segment length:      1 minute 49 seconds (so I'm not *all* bad...)
Segments, whole game so far:  13
Game, plan:                            40/310 (12,90%)
This level, time:                      14:34  (out of 17; 14,31% saved)
Time so far:                          0:35:48 (out of 40; 10,50% saved)
Months spent on this level:        8 (Frowny-face, I guess)
"Time to go to work..."
Hm, no replies.
Aw...

Anyway, progress!
Yeah!
Alright!
Awesome!
Okay, I'll stop now.

Basically, like noted last, I had problems making Shambala Sanctuary actually work. Basically, the problem was that for some reason, instead of returning the camera to Indy after the cutscene, it returns to the beginning of the cutscene. And then just sits there. Forever.
Interestingly, you *can* actually control Indy in this state, but since you can't see anything, it's not all that useful.
You *can* fix this state, by entering the menu and entering either of the option menus. Since these are actually separate windows, rather than inside the game, it re-sets the camera and all is well. Except it works one of three ways: 1; there's a very brief black screen, and all is well. 2; there's a very long black screen, and my screen actually also goes off, and once back in, there's a 50% chance that the graphics, specifically the textures, are, to put it in technical terms, all kinds of messed up. 3; You go to a black screen, and either fall out of the game, with all hardware graphics turned off until you restart the 'puter, or you fall out of the game and go to a BlueScreen Of Death.
So, the solution:
Shortest segment evah!
Ever, that is!

One frame shy of 17 seconds.

Just long enough for the opening cutscene to play out (since you can't enter any menus while there's cutscenes a-playing), and then a tiny bit just to let the music finish, and then I enter and exit the menus and all is well. And then I quicksave. Woot.

I couldn't come up with any slicker methods, so I hope this works out. Further, it also saves me a tiny bit of time, since I don't have to re-watch the opening cutscene again and again. Yay.

Aside from that, no more news. I'll see if I can actually make any *actual* progress soon.

"indiana jones and the infernal machine on windows xp is bugged - nothing more to say about that"

Yes, I know. Furthermore, on my installation at least, there are no *completely* game-halting bugs, luckily. It has however led me to anxiously avoid upgrading my hardware, out of a (justified) fear of destroying the fragile playability of the game.

"it would be better playing it on a old win9x machine and such problems dont happen."

A) No.
B) It's buggy in 9X too, although not quite so much.
C) Every *other* game (and application) out now uses XP, so I'd have to have an annoying dual-boot going.
D) Also, Fraps is one of those applications that only works in XP, and actually, that was the first XP-only application to force me into XP territory. And without Fraps, no speedrun.
E) Also; No.

Progress!

I've done three, count 'em, three, segments on Shambala Sanctuary. Oh yeah.

First, of course, there's the non-counting non-segment Segment 00, which is 17 seconds long, and conatins no gameplay on my part outside of fixing the camera glitch. So that one doesn't count. I suppose. Maybe.

And now for the meat and, uh, more meat I suppose.

Segment 01
From start of level, through the annoying wallclimb, down to the bottom of the clock room, to the bottom of the clock-powering waterwheel room, and ending at the moment you climb out after the last platform jump.
3 minutes, 20 seconds.

Segment 02
From the waterwheel room, up through the clock room, down and up in the bell tower, back to the clock room for some bellringer robot activating lever action, and ending the segment in the whip climb there.
3 minutes 48 seconds.

Segment 03
From the clock room, to the bell tower, through the looong cutscene there. Back to the bottom of the belltower for some unlocking, and into the plan'ts sunshine room, through to the bedrooms or what-have-you, where-you-have-Great-Monastic-Seal that I pick up. Back to the planting room, shooting some commies, and ending the segment where you climb up to the plant-lowering door-unlocking statue.
3 minutes 09 seconds.

And that's the end of this day's segments, I'll see if I get some more done soon.

Other notes:
As you can see, I try to stay under the 4-minute limit, where Fraps changes files and pauses the game a tiny bit, annoyingly.
I haven't *quite* planned out the next segments, but it really shouldn't take too long. I've done a planning run-through, in four parts, up to the point where you get the plant.
The parts were 1m:25s, 32s, 1m:31s and 2m:31s, so that's no more than 6 minutes to the plant.
So, most likely, the next segment will be from where I'm at now, to that annoying ledge shimmy before you place the plant in the pot, 1 minute into the 1:31. [EDIT] Bad math, obviously. The first three segments add up to the three-and-a-half minutes I was looking for. The segment will probably end where you climb up to that whole shooting-the-windows bit.
Furthermore, the rest of the level is a climb back up to the old woman, where more or less the same climb took 45 seconds. Then the boss fight, which in my way-back-when playthrough was in one badly unoptimized segment of 5 minutes. And then this level's done!
Strangely for me, I've gone through this level in a very systematic, forward planning way, checking and re-checking shortcuts and optimizations, and even *rehearsing*! Whatever will be next!?
If you're curious, the unoptimised way-back-when run was three segments, at 14, 21 and 5 minutes, and with me going through the first 35 of those minutes in 10 and a half minutes for sure and 6 minutes (or less), with another 5 minutes to shave down, I'm *well* ahead of the plan.
Except for the, you know, making that progress part.
But hey, at least there's some! For now!
"Time to go to work..."
Success!

I've done segment 04, ahead of time and schedule.
Like previously noted, this lasted from the statue, through to the plant room trek, which I utterly gutted with 1337 skillz, took the plant, swam back to the statue room, opened up the attic place, and ended the segment on the ladder there.
Now, for those of you who remembered the level, you might think "hm, shouldn't that have taken like an hour, what with the plant room trek and all", to which I say (because I can read your thoughts) "hah, nope". 3 minutes, 17 seconds. Oh yeah. Almost a whole minute better than the already tricked-out planning video. I could have actually fitted the attic in on a four-minute segment, but considering how it took 67 tries just to get that far, it was for the better that I didn't.
So, only two or three or four or so segments to go, and I'm done with Shambala Sanctuary. Oh yes.
Although sadly, probably not this week, since I'll be out of town and out of my computer. But hopefully not too long into the future, though.
Hopefully...
