Sounds to me like you guys don't know the game too much ... death teleportation is basic knowledge for this game Smiley

Basically, if you have less than 100 dark gems, you are taken back to the dungeon's entrance with full health. If you have at least 100 gems, you are taken back to the start of the room you died in with partial health and lose 100 dark gems.

Sounds to me like Halamantariel should be doing this run  Smiley You obviously know a lot about IoG. I'll definitely adknowledge you for the help. Normally I would just avoid each enemy  but now knowing this, I'll have to start killing some enemies and collect the Dark Gems they've dropped for future use. By the way Halamantariel, I was watching your IoG TAS and I noticed that at the begging when you walk into Will's Aunt and Uncles house for the first time you managed to skip the Pie Text. I'm aware that this is a TAS but do you know if this is possible on a console?

Well, IoG is the game I played the most when I was young. It's normal that I know nearly everything about it. Oh, and doing 2 TASes of the game helps, too. I did an any% (same as you are planning to do) as my first TAS, then I did a 100% later.

On an unrelated note, it's "definitely", not "defiantly" or "definately". Smiley

Hmm... I had no idea that I skipped some text here... I guess it works the same way as Lance's house (where I get the 2nd red jewel). I skipped the text when I entered it the first time, but then the second time, the text was there.

Must not be that hard to skip though ... since I didn't even notice there was a text there. My guess would be to hug the wall and enter the door as soon as possible. I have no idea how the skip works though. It just did (without me realizing it).

That's weird. My spellcheck didn't signify that I made a spelling mistake. :-/ Oh well. That's one reason why the modify button is there.

I was trying to do it on the console but I couldn't get it to work. Since it was a TAS and (I'm guessing) you were using a slowdown there wouldn't have been any slight pause when you had to start running in another direction. You must have somehow manipulated the button that activates the text blurb because you were running so fast. I could be wrong but in the end it doesn't really matter. Skipping the text would only save about one third of a second. I was just curious.
Your spell check didn't pick up on that misspelled word because "defiantly" is a word.  It just isn't the word you meant to use, since I doubt anyone told you not to give Halamantariel any credit.  However, the spell check probably should have caught "adknowledged".

The reason that text was skipped is that it only triggers at (520,223) and (520,224).  Walking speed is 2 pixels/frame, so the text will always trigger if you walk into the house.  However, running speed is 3 pixels/frame, so running will skip that text 1/3 of the time.  If you run straight up from a location down and slightly left/right of the doorway (so the game will automatically move you around the wall), you will always skip that text, since you will always reach Y=240 when your X coordinate is changed.  (This last part is obviously not useful in a speedrun.)

I have aborted this run. Anyone else wanting to do a run for IoG, discuss here.
Silver Hawk!
Darn man.  I was really looking forward to this.

My sister currently has my SNES, and I don't really want to ask her for it since she is a bit down on her luck now.  I've considered picking one up, though.  If/when I do I'll try to obtain a copy of IoG.

I'm sure I'll return to this project eventually. But right now I'm not that interested.
In the meantime, I've decided to try this after toying with the idea for a while.  In my (unrecorded) practice run, I'm currently in the Angel Village dark space at 1:06:55.  (The run up to Itory was terrible, but I was too lazy to redo it.  This obviously won't happen after I get an S-Video splitter and start recording a run.)
Silver Hawk!
Great!  I'm glad this run hasn't completely died.  That doesn't sound like too bad of a time.  What are you aiming for as a final time?
THE GAME!!
Illusion of Gaia/Time is a great RPG, i'd love to see a run of it. I would encourage you to do Terranigma, but that's already been done. Tongue

Besides, you sound like you're from North America, hence the title "IoG". Terranigma never came out there. Sad
Silver Hawk!
Yeah, one of those rare games that got a Euro release, but not a North American.

I suppose once IoG/T is up, someone will need to run Soul Blazer/Blader so we have the full SNES Trilogy up!

I now have my own DVD Recorder (that is fixed it) and I'm now more interested in doing an IoG Run because I can upload segments to my YouTube Account and post them here so you can see my progress.

Work won't begin on the run soon because of other projects and The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass being released (along with other Wii games) I don't know when exactly I will work on this again but I can assure you this Illusion of Gaia run is not dead.

And good luck Nitrodon.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
How's this going? Is anyone seriously committed to doing this?

I attempted this a couple years ago.  Here are the ideas I had for the first three segments:

1) Beginning to Inca Ruins, Save before Castroth)
2) Castroth, Gold Ship, Drifting, Save upon arrival in Freeja
3) Freeja, Mines, back to Freeja, Neil's House, Nazca Plains, save at start of Sky Garden

Any thoughts?
Sigma: The Moon Tribe Camp is more annoying than you think.  You should definitely save when you get Psycho Dash in Itory so you don't have to restart the entire game every time you fail that section. (or worse, accept a failure or two in that section unnecessarily)

You're really, REALLY pushing these segments. I did a practice run for Edward's Dungeon, and that alone made me want to abort the run. You should refer to the written route.

Quote:
1: South Cape, Edward's Castle, Edward's Prison (Save after using the key given by Hamlet)
2: Edward's Dungeon part 1 (Save after changing into Freedan)
3: Edward's Dungeon part 2, Edward's Castle, South Cape, Itory Village (Save after getting Psycho Dash)
4: Itory Village, Moon Tribe Camp, Incan Ruins, Larai Cliff (Save right before Castoth)
5: Castoth fight, Gold Ship, Drifting Raft, Diamond Coast, Freejia part 1 (Save before going to see the laborer prison, or whatever it's called)
6: Freejia part 2, Diamond Mine part 1 (Save after getting Dark Friar)
7: Diamond Mine part 2, Freejia, Neil's Cottage, Nazca Plains, Sky Garden part 1 (Save on arrival, before doing any rooms)
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!

Agreed.  I actually did record one segment (up until the Itory Cliffs boss) a long time ago, and I ended up restarting several times at that point, but not only is it gone, it will have little application to this run.

I'll have to play through the game again and see how I feel.  I'll also need to watch the TAS again and see what can/cannot be done on a console.

I highly doubt a SS, but seeing that FF6 was achieved in SS gives me hope.

I'll post more later.

For optimization, perhaps shorter segments will be needed.  I will have to play around and see.

Just to give this a bump and remind everyone that I am working on this:

This run will aim for the fatest possible completion.  No red jewels will be collected.  None at all.  Not one.

I've been practicing on the emulator and timing myself on the console, so far here's what I've got for the first segment:

Segment 1 - beginning to 1st Dark Space in Edward's Dungeon (after you escape the cell) - 6:19

I timed it via my cell phone timer and started timing as soon as I hit 'Start Journey' on the main screen.

What do you think of that time? Note that it's fairly unoptimized; I just wanted to get from point A to B as fast as possible while getting a general feel of what running this game will be like.

For the rest of the segments, we'll have to take a wait and see approach.  I'm contemplating splitting Edward's Dungeon into 2 segments for extra optimization.  That, and you must go to the Dark Space to transform into Freedan anyways.

Here's what it may look like:

2: Edward's Dungeon 1
3: Edward's Dungeon 2 - Itory Village
4: Itory Village - First Inca Statue - save in Itory Village
5: 2nd Inca Statue - ??

I'll keep this fairly up-to-date.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
For future reference, when I say TAS, I mean the 2 hour 6 minute one, not the 2 hour 9 minute one.  The reason being is because I cannot download the newest one, but I grabbed the old one off Google Video.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
I am a tad uneasy about what follows the 2nd Inca Statue because there don't appear to be any time-thrifty Dark Spaces in between it and the end of Inca Cliffs.

Here's what things may look like:

5: 2nd Inca Statue - Dark Space before Boss Fight

- much like the TAS, I will skip the Wind Melody and simply go right to the appropriate tile

6: Boss Fight - Gold Ship

Now that I have my own place and don't need to share the TV, I am finally able to record this run.  My current time is approximately 18:50 before Castoth (by SDA timing), or about 1:30 behind the any% TAS.

EDIT: The DVD-R decided to go bad while recording attempts at segment 4, so I lost all of my recorded segments.  I wasn't too thrilled with some of my mistakes in segment 1 anyway, so no huge loss.  I'll just have to start over.

EDIT: I managed to recover my recorded segments.

I don't think Segment 4's as bad as you think.  There's only a couple of seconds in mistakes tops.
