i know there are some treasure fans out there, any of you have this game? i haven't heard of any speed runs being done on this absurd saturn beat 'em up. that may be inpart due to the diverse array of characters, the essential leveling up process, or perhaps the wildly branching level progression. but would anyone else be interested in seeing it happen?
Thread title:
100% runs=great to watch
I don't have the game...but based on what I;ve sene of it in the past...I'd definitely enjoy watching the game beaten in various ways.  Not much Sega Saturn on SDA yet to boot as well...
Sleeping Terror
Unfortunately, this is one of the few Treasure games I haven't played yet.
Is this guy gonna do a run? I actually have played this game. I could probably get a hold of it, but its a long shot. Anyway, if he's doing it I hope to see it.

yes, as a long term project i'm going to work on bringing more saturn speed runs (including guardian heroes) to the archive. i just wanted to know if anyone else was interested in seeing/trying it. as i mentioned initially, guardian heroes has a lot that needs to be decided before a speed run can be attempted.

there are 30 levels in total but you only play through 8 or 9 of them in a single pass through story mode. at the end of each level, you are presented with as many as 5 dialogue options, each choice will lead you to a different level. there isn't really a "main" path since the story completely flips around to make whatever you decide to do seem like the way the adventure was meant to go.  you could just arbitrarily decide to take the first dialogue option in every circumstance but you would still only be seeing 1/3rd of the game...

the other problem is the characters. from the start you have access to a team of 4 varied heroes. the swordsman of the team is the closest thing to a main character, unfortunately he probably has the most uninteresting playstyle.

the game is also co-op... is that allowed?
100% runs=great to watch
co-op is allowed....just that it'll be counted on its own opposed to single player runs....I think.

Albert Oddyssy?
100% runs=great to watch
Or SOTN Maria Quest? 8)

Lots of good Saturn games made it to the US...and perhaps even more didn't.  What other games do you have access to or an interest in aside from this one?

i don't have either of those games, unfortunately. my saturn library is not what it was in the 90s...

burning rangers and nights are perfect games for speed running. i'm trying to find a copy of burning rangers but i still have nights.

i also have panzer dragoon and panzer dragoon zwei but the only ways to better your times would be to beat the bosses quickly and in zwei you would just have to take the fastest routes...

:-[ i also have fighters megamix Tongue

Sounds like a fine crop to make a start from.  Good luck with it all.
everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
First off, if we're talking Saturn here, shouldn't this be in newer consoles? Not like I care, I check both. Wink

Anyway, I haven't played this game either, but I wanted to chime in on all the Saturn action.

Here's what I can think of real quick that I personally would like to see:
- NiGHTS into Dreams
- Albert Odyssey (as Illuminated said)
- Panzer Dragoon Saga
- the other Panzer Dragoons (might not be good for SDA like you said, but then again we do have Star Fox already)
- Princess Crown
- Shining series
- Dungeons and Dragons: Shadow of Mystara (better known as an arcade game... I was told Saturn had the only home conversion)

Everything else I can think of either wouldn't fit on SDA (like Radiant Silvergun) or isn't exclusive anymore (like Grandia).

Which of these do you have or would be interested in?
Oh man, I totaly forgot about Nights! I played the demo but never had the whole game (I was a poor young boy and used gaming stores weren't the booming business they are now). I have a Saturn too, but nothing worth speed running (I have Resident Evil for Saturn but the only difference is that Chris fights two Tyrants).
My feelings on The Demon Rush
I like how this thread turned into the Saturn suggestions thread Tongue  Anyways, back to Guardian Heroes.

Co-op?  Sure, it's simply a separate category from single player.

You can use any character except Serena in story mode because you need to beat the game to use Serena.

I think each ending would be a separate category since you go through different stages for each ending (you will have to ask Radix to be sure about this one).

Each character is a separate category, but I think the easiest characters to make a speedrun with would be Randy or Nicole.  Randy does a lot of damage with his laser, tornado, and explosion spells; while Nicole does retarded broken damage if she corners enemies with her force field attack (it does more damage if they block).

Enhasa:  The Saturn DDSOM was an import that also came with Tower of Doom.  I'd really love it if someone did a good run of DDSOM.
Didn't this game have the ability to play up to six charecters in story mode? Or was it 4? Because seeing it be played with 4 charecters at one time would be so awsome.

Well at least the arcade version was 4. It would be nice to see, although I don't think a solo game would be much worse.

Anyway, this is the kind of game that if you're wondering if you should speedrun, you probably shouldn't. There are people out there who are RIDICULOUS at this game, who can do stuff like go through the entire game solo with thief, no damage. This is as fair a game you'll ever find in an arcade.

i wasn't aware guardian heroes was in the arcade... on the saturn it is 2-player in storymode, 6 in versus.

just to make sure there is no confusion, this is the game we are talking about:

i'll probably do a nights run before guardian heroes (i just think it'll be more fun) but i'm also going to be travelling soon so both will have to wait.

anyone heard of burning rangers? it was my favorite saturn game back in the day but practically no one has played it even though it was made by sonic team.
My feelings on The Demon Rush
No Guardian Heroes was never in the arcade.  People are just confusing it with this game.  BTW, DDSOM is one of the best beat em ups ever, and I would love to see a run of it sometime, even if the person does get hit a few times Tongue
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
This is slightly off-topic but....

How does one get A/V cords for the Saturn? I've managed to get a modded one for free (don't ask), but the previous owner can't find any of the cords (although the power cord shouldn't be a problem).

Thanks in advance.
i like to watch.
bump.

i think advance guardian heroes would actually lend a lot better to speed running. i may have to attempt that.

also i suspect the fastest route through guardian heroes might be 1-2-5-10-17-22-27-30. but i could be wrong.

My friend and I loved this game years back, until his dog stepped on the Sega Saturn and ruined that AND the disc :(. Anyways looking forward to the memories of it if you pull it off.

I posted my plan for that game here: http://speeddemosarchive.com/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=consoles_newer;action=display;num=1146674344

The Great Farming Empire
Sorry to bump up a thread this old, But there is something I wanted to ask. What constitutes as a separate category?

I'm asking because with the port off XBLA, You can skip cut-scenes as well as change the mechanic on how you gain EXP. I have a feeling that XBLA and Saturn would be two different categories, but what about having the Original EXP System VS the "Remixed" System. Would that also be a different category since it changes how you Level Up? This probably sounds stupid, But it would be nice to know because I am planning on doing a run with Genjuro on Remixed Mode and I didn't want to get my run disqualified because I ran an illegitimate category.

Here's my Test Run of sorts:

Known Improvements:
*Stage 1 was a little bad. Not terrible but the enemies could have been better positioned. Plus even though the Lightning Palm is amazing, I can't rely on it too much as it solely relies on the positioning of enemies.
*Stage 2 was a little better but could still use some cleaning up.
*Stage 5 went fairly well actually, aside from the little slipups with movement. But the fight against Zur went well.
*Stage 10 went well. I didn't even know that you can go to the right and skip the fight against Valgar, But i'm not sure if it's even worth it since I can get loads of EXP from him using the Lightning Palm.
*Stage 22 is ok. I think the problem was that I relied too much on the Lightning Palm to clear away enemies, thus losing time by just sitting there.
*stage 27 is practically the same ordeal. I just have to not rely on my Lightning Palm all the time.
*Stage 30 was where I really had major problems. Mostly because I have no consistent way of beating Golden Silver right now. I'm thinking on using the Undead Hero's Nova Blast for the most part, but other than that I got nothing.

That's all for now! My plan is to get around 13:10-13:30 before I submit.

The Great Farming Empire
Well....This is different.

I completely obliterated my previous run. I'm fine with doing another run if there are still large improvements, but I am really happy with this run.
I'll upload it soon.
@tiburonCS
Original vs. Remix also changes the control and combo system iirc. They'd definitely be different categories.

Timely bump since I'm running this game in a marathon soon. I've got about 2 weeks to get my time down from 20:00 to sub-15. Doable?

My main problem seems to be killing mooks fast, and dealing with robots (Golden Silver route with Nicole). Getting within Barrier range is a pain. I also tend to lose time between screens due to Barrier juggling dead enemies and extending their despawn timer. Is there a way to cancel out of Barrier?
