Never give up!
I didn't put notes for the last few areas because the Cathedral, Underworld, Battle Grounds, and Garm's Citadel don't require special strategies.

Anyway, here's some revised time predictions:

Town: 28 minutes
Mountain: 20 minutes
Castle: 30 minutes
Sky: Undetermined
Forest: Undetermined
Desert: Undetermined
Ice: Undetermined
Dream: Undetermined
Boss Rush: Undetermined
Cathedral: Probably 7 minutes
Underworld: I'd say 10 minutes
Battlegrounds: Undetermined
Final Battle: 3 minutes tops for the segment

I'll be updating these as I go.

Also, only the following Legend Items are ABSOLUTELY REQUIRED: the Parchment, the Javelin, the Lamp, the Lantern, and the Soul Savior.  I need to investigate the Scimitar a little more, but I'm going to likely skip the Book and the Bellows, and I'm definitely skipping the Ice Axe.

Also, my conclusion is that a run of Gauntlet: Dark Legacy requires INSANE precision and probably three or four close calls PER SEGMENT.  That's how dense the enemy population tends to be.  However, this would be very entertaining to do.

That one Runestone you're talking about in the Sky Realm, that's the one where there's five switches that toggle each other and you have to get the right combination to reach the stone, right? That's definitely a fixed puzzle from what I remember.

*looks up the order on GameFAQs*

Yep. 1, 4, 2, 5, 3 (1 on the left, three on the right).
Never give up!
Ah, I see.  Thanks, I'll make sure to check that out.

Anyway, I was going to upload a demonstration video of me plowing through the Forsaken Province (which I've referred to as the 'town', because that's what it most closely resembles from Gauntlet: Legends), but the audio went at half speed on me on processing.  I need to examine my situation a little before I try again, and the next try will probably be late today, or sometime tomorrow.  It's a shame too - as far as I checked, the time compares to what I'm projecting as a feasible time for that area.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
when either of you sends this in, I'd gladly sit and watch it for you guys  Grin

Never give up!
After half a year of not discussing this game, I've picked it up again and am going to plan some things out.

First thing I need to do before trying to plan, though, is figure out collectible totals for each area.  I'm going to start listing some of the guaranteed collectable items in each level.  I'll only note powerups and health if they significantly play a role in strategy.

First off, the Town Realm's first level, Poisoned Fields:
-The first Runestone
-650 gold
-1 Golden Snake Fang
-40 Red Crystals
-6 Purple Crystals
-2 Blue Crystals
-1 Yellow Crystal
-I notice there's at LEAST 7 magic potions in this level.

Next, the second Town level, Ghost Town:
-1160 gold
-2 Golden Snake Fangs
-35 Red Crystals
-12 Purple Crystals
-2 Blue Crystals
-2 Green Crystals
-I noticed an Extra Speed and a Thunder Hammer in this level.

As far as level three, Haunted Cemetary:
-The Parchment of Fire
-960 Gold
-1 Golden Snake Fang
-34 Red Crystals
-10 Purple Crystals
-2 Blue Crystals
-1 Green Crystal
-2 Yellow Crystals
-The Golem near the end carries an Extra Speed.  Quite a bit earlier, there's an Anti-Death Halo and TWO different Death guys.

And the Mausoleum:
-The second Runestone
-1020 Gold
-1 Golden Snake Fang
-14 Red Crystals
-13 Purple Crystals
-12 Blue Crystals
-1 Green Crystal
-2 Yellow Crystals
-I saw an Extra Speed near the Runestone... that's about it.

The resulting Gold amount is enough that I feel I can face the Lich immediately.  It's not a hard fight at all, really, just a little crazy.  I foresee two 3 Way Shots, a Phoenix, two or three Super Shots, and a Light Amulet as the key items to buy to ensure victory.

This means my plan would change.  Drastically.  I'd be tempted to do 2-4 segments a world, depending on the difficulty of the world in question.  And I'm skipping Legend Items, except for some or all the following:
-The Parchment of Fire (in the Town)
-The Blinding Javelin (in the Mountains)
-The Lantern of Revelation (in the Dream Realm)
-The Soul Savior (Cathedral)

Edit: Totals for the Mountain Realm.

Valley of Fire:
-The Third Runestone
-260 Gold
-1 Golden Snake Fang
-15 Purple Crystals
-3 Blue Crystals
-1 Green Crystal
-1 White Crystal
-There was an Extra Speed AND a Thunder Hammer in this very short level.

Dagger Peak:
-560 Gold
-1 Golden Snake Fang
-18 Purple Crystals
-2 Blue Crystals
-1 Green Crystal

Cliffs of Desolation:
-610 Gold
-2 Golden Snake Fangs
-17 Purple Crystals
-4 Blue Crystals
-1 Green Crystal
-1 White Crystal
-An Extra Speed was found right at the end of the level.

Lost Cave:
-510 Gold (at least - I suspect I missed some)
-1 Golden Snake Fang
-23 Purple Crystals
-5 Blue Crystals
-2 Green Crystals
-This level has a ton of keys and even more chests.  A lot of the chests contain near-useless stuff though.

Volcanic Cavern
-The Javelin of Blinding
-530 Gold
-2 Golden Snake Fangs
-20 Purple Crystals
-6 Blue Crystals
-2 Green Crystals
-1 White Crystal

I would also have to say the Dragon would be the fastest boss fight in the whole game.  Triple Super Shot and use of the Thunder Amulet after that obliterates this guy in less than 30 seconds.

Future worlds will be in later posts than this.
So... did anyone ever run this game?
Never give up!
Not gotten a chance to run Dark Legacy yet, as I got sidetracked.

Give me some time to finish a couple of other runs, and I may pick up one of these again by the time 2009 rolls around.  (I have an N64 again, I just don't have the Gauntlet: Legends cart itself right now, so I'd just have to hunt it down via EBay or somesuch - but I still have the copy of Dark Legacy I managed to borrow from my brother.)

Keep in mind that Dark Legacy (the one I'm more likely to run) is a REAL pain in the rear to plan for.  Though, I do need to look into the difficulty levels.  Because I'd still be segmenting this, if it affects more than bosses, I'm going for hardest difficulty - if not, I go easiest.
Yeah I might look into Dark Legacy and see exactly how much of a pain it would be to run.
I finally got my hands on a new PS2 and I am thinking about running this... anymore progress?
guantlet legends is great.  i dont remember do you have to have more than one person to beat it though?
Yes, a worthless avatar riding my posts.
oh god oh god oh god please do Legends instead. Preferably on N64.

Dark Legacy on Gamecube is a buggy clunker of a game with inconsistent items (especially when shopping), no timer on items, the game freezes sometimes after you read notes, THE SCIMITAR DOES NOTHING, Rapid Fire is useless...I could go on and on.

You can also beat it totally alone, and having extra players would only slow you down because you'd be waiting for everyone to catch up. A Wizard's Rock Shower does insane damage to the Dragon btw. I doubt the bosses would be much easier.
Bumping an old topic, but:

Obviously this would save a fair bit of time in a speedrun since you don't need to kill any chimeras in the first five worlds. This costs some experience but overall I'm sure 32 less sub-boss kills is worth it. I also looked into skipping crystals - the worlds that seem closest are Mountain, Desert, and Dream (!!). The last would be amazing, since it would skip the mandatory level revisit. I haven't played around with a lot of items or team things, so if anyone is actually interested that would be cool to try.

This is also pretty cool for pacifist challenges, but who cares about those Wink

Yeah, yeah, double posting, but this is pretty different than my above post. Anyone feel like getting some friends together and doing a co-op run?

I don't know if this is faster or not in general, because dwarf is 1/2 the speed of archer, but it very well might be. Usually charging up a super charge won't be too difficult, as turbo charges fast enough and a lot of these clips can be done in less moves.
Hopefully this inspires some interest in this game, as I'd love to see a glitchy run of it.
I didn't know that the GC port of Dark Legacy is so screwed up. My PS2 version plays fine.

And coincidentally, I started up a new game in DL a few days ago as the Jackal, and it got me thinking...sure, the Magic-emphasis characters (Wizard, Sorceress, Medusa, Jackal) are slower than the other classes, but once you pass into the Desert Lands and beyond, you begin to see just how crucial a high Magic stat can be for a speedrun, especially in those high-congestion regions like the Desecrated Temple.

I hadn't really thought about this game (be it Legends or Dark Legacy; from a straightforward gamer's standpoint, I prefer DL just because there's more to the game) in speedrunning terms before now, but it's certainly doable. I bet a four-player run blowing through Skorne's legions would be fun as hell to watch at the end of the day.

DarthVenom, I don't know if you have a close save, but there is something I really want to test. If you have a file nearby, can you get all runestones and complete everything up to the Battlegrounds, but do not get enough Gold Claws. Then, head to the area directly above the entrance to battlefield, enter your inventory, and exit it. If I'm correct,  you may be warped down to the lower level and be able to enter 11-1. I saw a video on youtube that did a similar warp, but it obtained all runestones through a glitch involving transfering data from one file to another.

Skipping golden lion claws would save a ton of time and enable things like the 8-1 shortcut shown above to run-feasible. Without that, I doubt a 2 or 4-player dwarf/ogre run would be faster even with the ability to skip crystals and take a lot of shortcuts in levels (also I'm pretty sure the turbo item does not go away if you use it outside of a level, which means super charge clipping in the tower won't take any waiting time). The real question is whether you can find enough tricks with super charge to warrant 300 less points of base speed compared to archer and 450 (?) less points of base magic compared to wizard. Levels like 8-1 and 8-2 seem to suggest you can, but until every level is tested I just don't know.
My file is just starting the Dream realm and I'll be doing some heavy gaming tonight (hopefully) and tomorrow, so I should be able to have an answer for you soon.
Success!

By standing at the extreme southern tip of the Tower and entering the Inventory, then exiting it I respawned in the lower section (the camera didn't change, so I had to navigate blind). After groping around in the lower area for a bit, I found the Battle Trenches portal and entered it. So it looks like golden claws are definitely skippable.
Amazing. That means a team of Dwarves/Ogres/Archers/Tigresses/Jesters/Hyenas can skip all golden icons (the latter 4 are the only ones who can do it alone, the former 2 are the only ones who can do other clipping shortcuts in levels / skip crystals). I think golden icon skipping alone eliminates magic classes from contention, unless someone can find a way to the eagle statue with them. But maybe I'm wrong, I really haven't tested how much faster Magic users are...I just find it hard to believe they can overcome both the 300 point (?) speed differential vs archer and the inability to skip golden fangs/feathers.

If I'm not lazy I might mess around and try to find boss health values on dolphin, which would be really useful in testing out strategies of what items to get, etc. Or maybe I'll start going through levels testing for useful shortcuts with dwarf clipping. But man controlling two players with one person sucks...I need to convince my friends that it is worth replaying this game as a dumb character...

If Archer/Tigress ends up faster, I guess this means this game could possibly have a "low%" category, skipping all crystals, golden icons, and legend items (only getting shards and runestones).
Edit history:
DarthVenom: 2011-11-30 08:35:41 pm
Given that two or more players could stagger their turbo attacks so that nobody is empty at any given time (especially with four players), I'm thinking the loss of speed with the Magic classes wouldn't be worth the benefit of an extra-powerful haymaker, but trials with multiple players would have to be done nonetheless. In regular runs, I love the benefit of being able to have what amounts to a screen-clearing attack, but effective use of Turbo could well replace it in a speedrun.

But let's go on the theoretical for a moment and assume that a low-% category is possible with the major skips of the golden icons and crystals: there's the issue of bosses. If a runner was to use skip tricks for the lion's share of the run, that leaves them a group of dismally under-levelled characters facing off against some extraordinarily powerful foes (and without the benefit of legend items). Even before this topic, I always envisioned a Dark Legacy run in my mind as needing to strike some balance between speed and levelling up. Spending treasure on stat bonuses is a must, of course, and you're bound to level up considerably while killing your way through the realms, but unless the players stop to grind at least a tiny bit, I'm not sure if that would be enough to lay down the law against the bosses. The Dragon, sure, but the Spider Queen and Shadow Wraith?

Granted, I've never actually played Dark Legacy with anyone but myself, and at the moment, none of my friends live close enough for me to actually make a go of multi-player practice.

Giving this game some attention again lately, anyone else still interested in it? Currently in the process of routing out the game and trying to figure out really which character is going to be fastest. Not sure if RingRush ever figured out that more than just those 4 can do the early wing skip. I think every character is *able* to do it, but either will need a good set up technique or won't be viable for a run. Wizard, sorc and warrior are able to do it quickly. This definitely makes them viable for any%, I really need to figure out boss hps and such because it would really help narrowing down the character choices.
http://imgur.com/sxnAT,5l2Dp,vjFlx#1 << skips on those characters at lvl1. Each done within 10 seconds of loading in.
Despite being able to do that, I'm still leaning towards the jester(or maybe archer, but I think jester might be better). The reason for that is because the wizards are quite slow early game but I think they could make up a lot of time in the late game because the last few levels you can seriously get blocked by the mobs, but good item management could save a ton of time on the jester. I still don't understand how the game determines how long the items even last really, perhaps I'm just stupid.
The icon skip to battlegrounds also saves tons of time and is super easy to do. Also there is the item transfer glitch you spoke of RingRush, but I think a run of any% would probably be on a new file, and you need every character to do the item transfer glitch.
Gold seems to be a problem until plague fiend (which seems to be the best boss to farm, due to the glitchy corner spot). If you have the javelin he can't hit you. Not sure what my "minimum level" to fight him is going to be (as I do think the legendary items only work once, can't quite remember). This will probably be good to farm to stock items//levels. Not sure if buying levels would be too good, but you could get 90 in a stat + whatever level you gained from each plague fiend fight.
As of now, the times I'm estimating:
Province 22 minutes
Mountain 15 minutes
Castle 30 minutes (this includes farming a bit of crystals missed in mountain, about 25 i think, farmed inside 2-1, usually need health at this point so it kind of works out, would like to avoid this somehow though).
Sky probably about 40 minutes..haven't routed this too well, or past here.
This is the point the game gets a lot harder to route because you'll actually have gold, and need to make decisions about how much you'll farm, etc...hopefully figure out these in the next few days.

Currently having a lot of fun and making much progress in this game, single segment run will definitely come soon. I would also like to try this game on dolphin netplay with someone, a duo run would be tons of fun.
Hax I used all of my strengthz
Tried coming up with a gauntlet legends (N64) route if anyone was still interested. This route is still being tested by me. This is with Archer, but considering Wizard if I can utilize meteor shower efficiently.

Mountain + Dragon > Castle > Fields > Ice + Yeti >  Chimera and Plague > The rest of the game

I feel the gaining of levels through bosses would be enormously helpful since the bosses themselves are quite short compared to other levels. The chimera and plague are both very strong after finishing their world levels and could be fought after Ice levels so that the gold accumulated might help for a faster and safer kill overall. The yeti should be fought before the remaining bosses so that you have slightly less traveling time. My working assumption is that all of the boss countering relics except for Soul Savior are generally a waste of time.

The scimitar is not too long to get but is quite worthless since you can hit the body of Chimera for pretty much the same rate. The dragon at the beggining is well worth the levels in my opinion as the castle enemies present a huge gap in power and the dragon is not very difficult early on. I am also considering using the stop time glitch for the run after defeating the dragon should low level be viable for the boss fights.
Hey there!
I'm so glad there is a thread here for this game! I've been speed running Gauntlet Legends for the 64.

I use the archer for her speed. Never tried it with the wizard but i might next. I like your route Crak Atak, mine is slightly different. Dragon is easy to kill with 3 way shot, Rapid Fire, and Lightning Amulet combined. With that said you can kill Dragon later with little to no problem. There are a lot of different glitches out there. Time stop works great to speed up your run. There is also a shrink enemy glitch that works just like time stop, except the enemies are permanently small.

I have a few runs posted on Twitch. Just look up my name and you'll find it. Beating Gauntlet Legends on the 64 is doable in under 2 hours. I can say that because I've done it. Feel free to hit me up if you have any questions or comments. I hope to post more soon! ~Boyo003
"Hey! That's MY cardboard box!"
Ok, I need to bring this up: For Gauntlet Dark legacy, would using the 10000K name for a character be allowed or not?

Well, since no one seems to really be running this at all;  it's up to you if you want to use it in your run or not.
I personally wasn't using any name, but looking back maybe I should try it for the sake of my sanity while playing this game.

I've been interested in running Dark Legacy as well. I think using the 10000K is definitely an idea to toss around, although I myself would probably prefer using a name that doesn't interfere with gameplay unless it is the only way to make the run viable.
