SO I want to have my own marathon in december so I can raise money for agdq^

cuz right now I don't have the money for the flight, which is the biggest issue,
and the reason I made this thread was that I want tips and ideas and stuff since I've never hosted
or done mini marathon of any sort on my own, and that I would need help with this I think to make it happen,
there are so many people and stuff wantt o see and enjoy time with at AGDQ,

I'm not really used to like raising money for myself, I barely stream, luckily SethCharleon lent me his Laptop so this marathon for myself might be able to happen so, like yeah tips and ideas, the best way to earn donations
and make the word go out so I get viewers I guess ,

Just as a note, I am not asking people to run games for the sole purpose or raising money to me,
I feel that this is wrong, but like, retweet and stuff like that? >_<

yeah I'm a confused individual when it comes to this, so all help is appreciated, critique etc. go nuts guys.

and if you want to see my ass (with new hair style only for AGDQ) you could always help me out? :3
Thread title:
if you want i would definitely run a few games for you not because you need it or asked for it but because you are a cool dude and i want you ot go to AGDQ Cheesy

anyways OT, a few things i would consider:

Donation incentives / Donation games (people love it when they can influence shit and they offer money for it)
if you are good with photoshop or whatever i would make overlays(makes the stream look nice, and more people will watch if the stream looks nice :))
look into a few other marathons and see how they did/structure it, for example dxtr's marathon?

if i can help out with anything gimme a shout on twitter or on here, you'll know where to find me Smiley
Depending on what all you do, how you approach this and when it is, I can definitely try to help out as much as possible!

First, consider if it's reasonable to ask your audience to give you approximate 1000 US $ which is what a ticket is going to run you.

Second, this is not fund-raising. This is scrounging and I don't believe this thread belongs in this section of the forums since it hardly is either a community meet-up or marathon.

Third, don't buy new stuff. Sell games and consoles you own.

Forth, if you are OK the above. Make a schedule, make a plan, spam your followers and hope for the best. But be honest about why you have failed to save money for AGDQ the past year. It's hardly a surprise expense.

My understanding this is just asking for tips on how to approach marathons don't have to blast him for asking for help.

ever heard of anything like suprise expenses outside of AGDQ? also i dont think he asked for people to flame him... i mean critique is fine but this is complete bullshit and it doesn't help out at all, if you don't have a good/useful thing to say, don't say anything at all

I don't believe my post is flaming or even close to that. If it was received as that I'm sorry. That was not my intention. I was merely trying to highlight that you have responsibilities towards your donors and should think twice before asking for money.

this seems more like a personal thing more than anything, because i don't think i've seen you complain about any other marathon, like: https://forum.speeddemosarchive.com/post/chicago_speedathon_raising_money_to_get_runners_to_agdq_october_46_2013.html that one for example, which is also just getting money for runners, it might be bigger and a little bit more organized right now, but that is because they are more experienced, which is the exact reason jinny came to the forum with this question, to get help and make this marathon good looking and professional, not to get told what he can or can not do on the forums or what he is exactly doing, i think we are all old and mature enough to know what we are doing and what we want to do here aren't we?

as for a general question, what kind of position do you think you are in to tell people what to do anyways? that seems out off line, actually it just is.

anyways i guess i'm done with this discussion because it will not help Jinny out at all, and it's just spamming the forum with unnecessary things at this point.

I don't agree with the Chicago-ton either, nor Dxtr's marathon. Or anything that does not directly benefit a charity. But at least both of those were well planned and thought through. I don't know about the Chicago-ton, but I'm certain that Dxtr's AGDQ-trip did not stand or fall with the support he got from his marathon, where as IrregularJinny's clearly does. That's a major difference right there, asking for support and asking someone to fund the entire trip.

This is obviously a very delicate subject to discuss and a lot of individuals try to avoid the discussion openly but it's a frequent topic in closed forums.

My answers, which are my personal opinions can be applied to anyone who is trying to raise funds for a vacation and is not targeted towards a specific individual. I cannot stress that enough.

I believe it's important not to get comfortable and let fundraising for vacation-money become a norm just because it's uncomfortable to speak up about the matter. Marathon saturation is already very real, fundraising to attend marathons will soon become saturated too. Especially if it's made into routine and carried out by the same persons over and over.

I'd be happy to continue this discussion somewhere else and let me leave you with a final question. Would this situation be different if a person hosted a fundraiser to go to Mexico and lay on the beach for a week? i.e a non AGDQ related vacation trip.

First.  Start off with something very strong.  When I did my 24hr stream a few weeks ago I started with the first ever XD 100% run.  It was original, fresh, and it generated a TON of hype.  If you're doing X1-6 like i think you are, then doing X1-6 relay (aka back to back) would be very interesting.  I've seen people flock to streams when the classic 48 mavericks races and 72? robot master races.  It's exciting to see that and would be a great start.

Another thing.  Try to lessen expenses like days stayed.

Edit:  Took out some unneeded info that I didn't think about.
Waiting hurts my soul...

Something that isn't explicit here is the difference between those fundraising drives and this proposed one is those supported runners to get to the marathon.

I personally don't have a problem with someone trying to raise money for themselves this way, but be explicit about it. If people want to support you to hang out (or help out, whatever your plans are), then more power to you. Just be honest about what you're doing. If you're not completely and explicitly upfront about it then it could sour someone's view of the community.

Best of luck.
