I just confirmed that every Calm Lands enemy can show up on the route that you take.  I probably would have suggested a Chimera Brain rare steal myself, but I wasn't sure how well your sanity would hold up if you had to manipulate that.

Evrae Altana seems like a decent choice, with the underwater stealing caveat you mentioned.  I assume he also counters when you steal from him, but his counter is relatively fast even when you don't compare it to underwater stealing.

He doesn't counterattack after the Steal.  The battle just goes: Tidus Elixir, Evrae counterattacks (evade), Rikku steals, Tidus Elixir.

I'm trying to see if theres any way to organize the inventory before Evrae Altana, but Natus dropping lvl 2 Spheres is making that difficult. Maybe I could mix Cluster Bomb with something other than a level 2 key sphere?Nevermind: Cluster Bomb has to be a level 2 key sphere.
I suppose it's possible to clear a place for the Shining Gems by using Underdog's Secret + Lightning Marble as your Quartet mix, but the aforementioned Lv. 2 Key Spheres make it impossible to put the Fire Gems in a convenient spot.

Both Cluster Bomb and Lightning Bolt (on Crawler) require Level 2 Key Spheres, given your inventory at those points.  It seems that the only way to not make Natus fill one of your inventory slots in your route is by picking up another Level 2 Key Sphere in a chest somewhere, but that's probably slower and you still have to deal with the Black Magic Spheres dropped by Evrae Altana.

I will probably just go with the original Underdog's Secret/Fire Gem/Dream Powder setup before Defender X.  It will have to be separate from adding the agility on Rikku now, but it's not that big a deal.

I started recording attempts on the first segment and the best time was 13 min 49 sec with 4 Demis.  I am going to keep trying for 3 Demis, which will save at least 10 seconds, but it's probably going to take quite a while.

Segment 2 is also complete.  I got the Pre-emptive Strike on the Sahagins, and the Tanker battle went pretty fast as well.  No Ambush on Geogesano, but it doesn't save that much time anyway.  The swimming part and the stairs part went decently.

I think I am done with Segment 3. I got the double rare steal, and I didn't get ambushed by the Pirahnas at the end.  However, I didn't get any crits on Klikk, so I am debating on whether or not to manipulate some crits on it as well, since it only took me 15 attempts to get this. One crit wouldn't really save that much time though, and two crits will probably be too hard to get, when combined with the double rare steal.

Edit: I decided to redo this segment and managed to shave off 4 seconds with a crit in the pre-Rikku part. The rest of the segment after Klikk went pretty much the same.

Segment 3 time: 9 minutes 47 seconds | 79 attempts.

Save at Underwater Ruins [0:33]

Now, if you add up the real-time segment times I posted, it comes out to 34:28, but the game timer reads 0:33 at the save. Loading from that save and starting a stopwatch, it took 43 seconds for the timer to reach 0:34, so that means the game timer was at around 0:33:17, assuming that the game timer starts immediately after loading the save.  So that means the game-timer is already a full minute behind real time.  I was speculating that the game-timer lags along with the lag in the game, and considering how much lag there is at the beginning of the game, this may be true.

Segment 4 is complete. I handled the bad camera angle swimming quite well, and I got the rare steal on Tros. The rest of this segment is just cutscenes.

Ok, I said I was done with Segment 4, but I really wasn't, because I realized that I could kill Tros faster; although it would require more luck beyond getting the rare steal. On the attempt that I initially kept, Tros got Nautilus Charge off before my 3rd Grenade, so it ended up swimming to the back a 2nd time.  If I get my 3rd Grenade off before Nautilus Charge, I can kill it before it swims back, although it does do an attack instead.

Now, I wasn't able to do this, but I did get a Pre-emptive Strike along with the rare steal, which made it not do Tentacles before swimming to the back the first time. This made up for the swimming to the back the 2nd time.  Of course then the game decided to be an asshole and not let me skip "Uhh.. Hungry" on the boat, even though I was mashing the button like I was playing Contra. I managed to shave off 4 seconds overall though.
Edit: Turns out that text didn't waste any time after all.

Segment 5 is complete.  This segment was much more of a pain in the ass than I thought it was going to be.  I needed to only get two encounters of two pirahnas each, and I had to get 2 Mana Spheres, but I also had to not get attacked.  Unfortunately, one of the Pirahnas usually gets a turn before me.  Usually, I would either get the Mana Spheres and get attacked, or I would not get attacked but not get the Mana Spheres/get a third encounter.

Of course that's just the first 3 minutes of the segment. Then I have to do a lot of dialogue skipping and running with the Cloister of Trials mixed in.  Then the game decided to say "fuck your perfect segment" and the Condor attacked me in the tutorial battle. At least it was a quick attack, and it let me select Attack right after it hit me, but it still sucks. The rest of the segment went too well to redo it for that, however.

Unofficial segment time: 30 min 3 sec in 225 attempts.

Save at Besaid - Promontory [1:19]

So, right after I typed up this rant about Segment 5, I got a godly Segment 6 on the very first attempt.  Two crits on Kimahri, and he dropped a 2-slot Metal Shield (206 gil).  Then the first Garuda dropped a Rod of Darkness (512 gil). Then I didn't fail any escapes on the 2nd Garuda, and it didn't even get Sonic Boom off. Then the last encounter gave me two weapons: 2 slot Rod of Lightning (281 gil), and 1 slot Water Moomba (187 gil).  So, not only was this segment as fast as it realistically could be, but I also got 1186 gil worth of equipment.  At that rate, I definitely won't have to manipulate drops from Euchilles, and maybe not from Geneaux either.

Unofficial segment time: 5 min 27 sec in 1 attempt.

Ok so, since I am a complete idiot, I have to redo Segments 5 and 6, because I didn't skip the prayer scene outside Besaid.  I always thought that scene was forced, so I never bothered to try running past it.  Yet the run I am trying to beat skips that scene, so there is absolutely no excuse for it.  I did it in my single segment run as well, so if it gets rejected for that, I won't even argue.  It wasted 23 seconds by the way.

Fortunately, I can still make it to that save sphere without getting near Wakka and triggering the scene, so I can still start Segment 6 right before Kimahri. UNfortunately, I am probably never going to be able to match the Segment 6 I got previously. I'm pretty sure that Segment 6 that I got was just the game laughing at me for not skipping the prayer scene.

After a lot of bad luck on Segment 5 take two, I got an incredible double crit on the first encounter, giving me 2 Mana Spheres and the AP of 2 encounters, then I was able to escape with no fails and only 1 pirahna attack on the 2nd encounter.  This saved 1 second overall on the Pirahna part of the segment, compared to my previous successful attempt.  The rest of the segment went swimmingly (even though I wasn't swimming in the rest of it); the Condor didn't attack me this time, and I avoided Wakka at the end to get to the save.

Segment 5 time: 29 minutes 38 seconds | 305 attempts.

WOW I knew that Segment 6 was too good to be true :[ that sucks... hardcore
Waiting hurts my soul...
probably hard to compare, but does the incredible luck you got make up for the 23 seconds?
Obscure games ftw
It looks like the incredible luck would have meant less resets later down the line and about 5-10 seconds saved, maybe 15.
The extra crit on Kimahri saved about 4 seconds, and the Garuda not doing Sonic Boom saved another 3 or 4 seconds I think.  But the really good luck was with the amount of equipment I got, which would have made some later segments be less of a pain in the ass.  In any case, the 23 wasted seconds is completely unacceptable.

The run is back on track after the setback.  Segments 6 and 7 are complete.

Segment 6 was a couple seconds slower than my previous miracle attempt, but that is still pretty good. I only got one crit on Kimahri this time, but Valefor also evaded only once instead of twice. This time I only got a darktouch weapon and a sensor weapon, for a total of 574 gil, so I am going to have to manipulate a weapon drop from Geneaux now.

Segment 6 time: 5 minutes 28 seconds | 101 attempts.

Save at Besaid - Beach [1:24]

On Segment 7, I killed the Fin with 8 damage to spare.  Euchilles nearly killed Tidus, since I decided to use two Cheers and not use Dark Attack, but I got the Overkill with 4 sinscales on the screen to get the 43 AP and 6 Mana Spheres. It dropped 1 weapon and 1 armor, so I will need a Darktouch weapon from Geneaux with either 1 or 2 slots to get enough gil for the Stunning Steel.

Segment 7 time: 23 minutes 49 seconds | 20 attempts.

Save at Kilika - Woods [1:48]

I wasn't really planning on uploading them anywhere until the run is verified. I may save them as highlights on my stream page though, if it's a segment that I am streaming.

I have highlighted all the successful segment attempts on my stream page. Segments 3 and 4 are not there since I was not streaming at the time I finished those.

I have confirmed that it is possible to get only 1 encounter between the Ragora and the Kilika Temple; but I didn't get a Darktouch weapon from Geneaux unfortunately.  Given how rare it is to get only 1 encounter, combining all the luck factors in this segment is going to be quite a pain.

Segment 8 is finally done! I wasn't streaming this session, unfortunately, but I am definitely glad to be done with this segment, as it was much more of a pain in the ass than I initially thought it would be.

I actually almost got a 1 encounter run on the first attempt of this session, but I got the 2nd encounter just a few steps away from the end, which pissed me off quite a bit. Nine attempts later though, I got the winner.

It was a couple seconds slower than my fastest 1 encounter attempt, but really the only thing that could have been faster was keeping Valefor out of critical stance on Geneaux.  Valefor didn't evade either seed cannon, and I had no attacks or talking in the random encounter.  It's a good thing I decided to attack Geneaux with Kimahri instead of defending, because I would have been 50 or so damage short if I hadn't.

Then, of course, I finally got the Darktouch weapon that had been eluding me up to this point.

Segment 8 time: 10 minutes 39 seconds | 560 attempts. (Attempts that got only one random encounter - 5 )
