We all scream for Eyes Cream
I didn't see anything about this so I thought maybe I would do one. I began to plot this out while in progress of my Tidus only challenge and thought, "Why not? I'd like a video on SDA." FFX is one of my favorite RPGs so I might as well try it.

I looked at the Speed Run FAQ/Walkthrough by KADFC at Gamefaqs and from the looks this run will not be under 8 hours. If lucky, I can probably get under 10. Most, from the Walkthrough, seems to be 12 hours. I have yet to start but I'm going to work on it soon. I will barely have much time due to work, my friend who calls me everyday, and school when it starts but I'm hoping it won't take THAT long.

The link to the above mentioned FAQ is here.

I do have one question. Will SDA allow the use of compiling the Al Bhed Primers in the beginning to have it completely translated? Or will I have to start fresh without them? If I have to start fresh, then more time may be needed.

Here's a few things I'm planning.

For Overdrive Modes I'm planning on using Stoic at first and then Comrade when obtained.

Only having Kimahri go through the Sphere Grid for abilities instead of stats to shorten the Biran and Yenke battle on Mt. Gagazet as their stats are proportional to Kimahri's. In the battle I'll just use a Chocobo Feather and steal some Lvl 3 Key Spheres while using Lancet to learn a new Overdrive and just use something like Seed Cannon or Fire Breath/Aqua Breath.

Any other tips will help. I'm planning on starting a test run either tonight or tomorrow.

I'm not sure what Radix would say about the 99 Underdog Secrets, but my guess is that it will be in a separate category, similar to new game plus.  I myself would really enjoy a run without using that strategy, but I'm not sure how much longer it would make the run, since the run is going to be pretty long even with it.

Good luck with it though.  The only thing I could recommend is using much less save points since the game is turn based so there isn't too much room for error, and KADFC tends to save too often in speedrun type challenges.
Wow, If there was any agme that I would think isn't plausible, I would think that FFX would be it, I mean, my neighbor took like 170 hours to finish that game...
yes, a man carrying a gimp
FFX only takes 170 hours if you do every single thing in it.

Probably not. Since this is something you can only have by playing at least most of the way through the game already it would probably be considered a New Game+ feature and disallowed for the initial run. Of course for the final ruling you'd have to talk to Radix (when he gets back... apparently he's out of town until Thursday.)

In that case should I send him a message and wait for a reply for when he comes back so I don't have to hope he see's this thread?

lol well he's nine years old...

and I dunno if he as even done, but I am positive it was 168 hours of playtime.

Personally, I think that getting the Al Bhed primers at the start would be perfectly allowed, as it has no bearing on the game outside of the Al Bhed language being translated.  However at the same time, what's the point?  It has no affect on the game.  But if you want to for kicks and giggles, go ahead.

The bigger question is how close you can get to the 7 hr mark.  Going too long may cause Radix to say no.  Yes, he has taken over-7 hr runs, but it depends on how long it is after all.

The Al Bhed Primers are what will make or break this run. With them, I can get the 99 Underdog Secrets from Rin on the Airship and mix Trio of 9999. Without them, I'll have to find an alternative way to defeating bosses.

Right. Don't use the Al Bhed primers, that would be more like a New Game+ run. Besides, it takes like a minute to use the compilation sphere! Optimise, man!

The bigger question is what celestial weapons are worth getting?  Lulu's is out due to the time it takes to dodge 200 lightning bolts.  Rikku's I remember being quick, and Tidus' would probably be too.

And if I remember right, Baroque sword (for Tidus) gives you No Encounters, a must.  I can't think of any others off the top of my head that do, nor any items that can be crafted to grant the ability.

As for summons, I think it might be worth it to go out of the way to get Magus Sisters, given how much damage Delta Attack can do, but it's something you're gonna have to experiment with.  Yojimbo is a definate skip.  You're not gonna have the gil to make him worthwhile.

I don't think sisters are worth it.
I got them early on my second playthrough and they didn't stand anything. My favorite aeon was Anima, but that's after getting the celestial weapon of Yuna, which is almost on the way.

Al'Bhed primers:
If you can reasonably argue that using the Al'Bhed primers will get the run down from 14h to 10h, then yes, in every other case no.

No to the Celestial Weapons. Although they ignore defense, my stats won't be high enough to break 9999. Trio of 9999 is going to be better as I'll have the party members learn Steal and Use and I'll just Use elemental gems for 9999 x 6 hits. Closest I may go to the Celestials is getting the Cloudy Mirror as I must get the items for Trio in the Remiem Temple Chocobo Race if I can't use the Compilation Sphere. Sure it will use up a minute but I can just go to the one at Rin's Travel Agency somewhere where I don't have to go far. The time wasted for it though would be useful.

Although getting Anima would be nice, that means I have another Aeon to kill and another Cloister to solve while getting the treasure. Only treasure worth getting is the Red Armlet in the Kilika Temple.

One thing I may do is go to the Omega Ruins in hopes to find a Master Couerl to bribe and get some Warp Spheres. I'll have Tidus get Quick Hit (More hits at 9999 with Trio) and Zombie Attack (For Yu Yevon). Sadly the rarity of them is not good so if I do happen to do this I will make sure I encounter them within 3 encounters or I try again.

Before I record this run, however, I'll do 2 strategies. 1 is my own and the other will be KADFC's. The faster time will be the one I use in the final run.

Thanks for all the help everyone.

On the contrary, I think manipulating Yojimbo into Zanmato-ing things whilst giving him 1 gil could be incredibly useful. If he does it against bosses. I forget.
We all scream for Eyes Cream
Not a good idea especially in the NA version. And I'd need a large amount of Gil just for that.

I find it pointless to get the warp spheres for quick hit, are you sure it'll save time overall(I haven't really checked out the Speed Guide, but getting those warp spheres doesn't make much sense to me)?

I'm not exactly sure but it will make BFA a little bit easier to fight so I don't need to worry about him attacking. I probably won't do that as it doesn't seem effective.

I did the math that game took up 0.00213 or so % of his life on this Earth...
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Ahhh, FFX...the one FF I've ever played...man, this brings back memories(horrible memories)...

Sadly, I can't help you with the run as I haven't played it in a long time, or have even completed it, but I will say good luck!
If you achieve to do it under 10 hours, I'll congrate you. If under 9 hours, I'll bow to you.
If under 8 hours, I'll call you the best FF speedrunner here. Good luck with it Wink
We all scream for Eyes Cream
Only way I'll get under 8 is if I cheat so I can 1 hit kill everything. 9 is probably not possible but 10 is a maybe if quick enough.
I know, I just wantyed to say something impossible too Wink even with a sub 10-h, you surely be a good speedrunner to my eyes  8)
I love Zelda!
I wish you the best of luck speedrunning one of my favorite games of all time.  Grin
Glitching EB 1 flying man at a time
Yea good luck with this. It's rare that Radix takes above a 7 hour run, and that's only if it makes sense that it should be that long and is run very well to be accepted. The Chrono Cross run went pretty well over that mark, but it is possible for that to be cut down a little more i think, though it was a really good run. This game, on the other hand, is nothing like most RPGS, there are no actual shortcuts around most things and there is a lot of freakin talking and cutscreens you cant get around. The game is so frickin long its mind boggling, but its a very straightforward game and really good, so it is able to be speed run, just not in less than 8 hours without cheating I'm sure. I wish you the best of luck with this game, though. This is my favorite PS2 game and it would be great to see this game run, but it would be hard to convince Radix to accept a run thats over 8 hours i think, dont know for sure until you try, but this game is really long. Have fun!!

He's willing to make exception given enough public demand, and I can't see there not being enough public demand for any Final Fantasy game.
