Just watched it over the last few days and I am impressed. Great run Essentia. Can't believe FFX is actually run. Now if someone would have luck with VIII.
Haven't had much time to post anything, but I began watching your run of FFX last Thursday and finished it that Saturday. Another excellent run Essentia, filled in all my downtime between my thesis paper last weekend.

Sadly Maglok it is very likely that someone will put up a FF XIII speed run before that ever happens.
POSSIBLE *MAJOR* Imrpovement. ..but only possible i dont know if anybosy has looked into this avenue yet: the other day, my friend was complaining about how a certain boss was "the first boss that i couldn't use a zombietouch-pheonix down combo on". i haven't really looked into this but i will and will post something as soon as i do... if it does work, it could redefine the whole strategy for speedrunning the game... hope for the best!
I don't think the zombie+phoenix down strategy would really work, simply because most bosses actually are immune to zombie. I just looked through some FAQs, and the only bosses (in this run) that aren't immune to zombie are: Klikk Kimahri Garuda (Luca Stadium) Spherimorph Evrae Altana (already has zombie status) Sinspawn Genais (partially immune) BFA (partially immune, pagodas remove zombie status) don't know about Yu Yevon
Even more problematic is that the earliest you can get zombietouch/strike is the Calm Lands, which means it can't even be used on any bosses besides Genais and BFA. With Genais, you fight the Core right afterwards, so you have to use Trio in that battle anyway. With BFA, his zombie status will be gone as soon as the pagodas do Power Wave, not to mention you have to kill him before he does his Ultimate Jecht Shot overdrive.
Another thing is that zombietouch/strike+phoenix down does 9999 max damage, so Trio/Quartet + elemental gem will do 5 times that damage in one turn. It's important to take the number of turns into account, because the situation with most of the later bosses is "kill them before they kill you."
thanks for the message...i did a little bit of research myself and found this unfeasible shortly after i posted it... I already emailed my complaining friend about his obvious lack of truth...
Yeah zombie only comes online after you have trio access so it is fairly useless, which is unfortunate.
On a different note, with finals almost over I am seriously starting to consider SSing this now. Only problem is I need to modify my plans which were based on me doing a regular segmented run.
Obviously no getting that no encounters equipment but that isn't a huge loss as first strike+flee works just fine. Any other obvious thoughts on this before I go more in depth with my planning?
Boss strategies that will have to change: BFA Yunalesca (maybe? Shouldn't be too bad overall though) Spectral keeper Flux Evrae (maybe, I'll need to double check what I had)
Probably some others too. So any thoughts/other things I need to consider (aside from being crazy for attempting this)?
Neither Zombie -> PD nor Zombie -> Elixir do a thing to BFA, because BFA's immune to proportional (demi-style) damage, even when the proportion's 100%. If it did work, well, NSGNSNCNONENNENBB would be a LOT easier, ya?
So someone just alerted me to the fact that you can skip most of the opening cutscene by pressing select. Please don't tell me that this was common knowledge... :-[
I tried it, and you can skip from where it's showing their weapons right to where Tidus says "Listen to my story." This saves almost exactly 2 minutes (it was something like 1:57). Now I wonder if you can skip it the second time you see this scene; unfortunately, I don't have a save near that point, so I can't test it. If it works the second time, though, a total of 4 minutes could be shaved off my time with this trick alone.
I can comfirm that the opening cutscene does count on the in-game timer. I redid my first segment with the skip, and my time at the save was 24 minutes, whereas on my speedrun it was 26 minutes.
If people knew about this skip and didn't tell me, I'm going to have to...not give them a cookie, or something. (I can't be meaner than that. :P)
Well, you shouldn't need to send in a new segment for it. Just ask for the first segment to be re-timed since it should have been made from start of control in the first place.
I believe it's only on manually-timed runs that timing starts at start of control. Since they used the in-game timer for this run (besides manually timing the last segment after the timer is last visible), I don't think they would re-time the first segment. I guess I could ask about it, though.
It's not that I'm worried about someone beating my time. (If someone does, that's great!) It's just that if I had skipped the opening cutscene, I might have been able to beat the Ultima Garden time. Now with the other improvements that I've found, I'm pretty certain that I would beat the UG time if I redid this run. However, I don't think I'll be redoing this run (at least anytime soon) just to save a few minutes.

Best you can manage is an Alchemy'd Mega Potion, dealing 4000 damage. Yeah, go with the sure-way NSG strat, works every time.
I have only one question: Can we please some upload some kind of run without cutscenes!. I've played the game, that's why I'm watching. I want to see the strategies and the important shit, not 45 hours of cutscenes.
Every time I play the speed run, I sit back and try to enjoy, but instead after 5 mins of gameplay I get a 10 min cutscene that I've seen a million times.
From what I've seen this run is awesome, but I don't wanna have to seek through the segments every 30 seconds to find shit that isn't cutscenes.
Heyyy... wait.. i don't know you. Don't confuse me
According to the rules, non-skippable cutscenes have to be included to ensure no cheating, relaoading ect.
But i'd have to agree... why not put up an alternate version of the run, after the official verification? the only porblem i see there, would be the size of certain runs (This one here being the best example). Havong over 400 runs up and putting another 150 or so up, at slightly reduced size.. well..
Don't know if possible, but if, then it would be pretty neat, or even kinda awesome.

Now you know how I felt while working on this run.
For those who are interested, some of the people from the Speed Gamers community are doing a 72-hour Final Fantasy marathon in November (more info here). They're going to attempt to beat FF I-XII (excluding XI), with two games being played at a time.
Anyway, I'm going to be playing FFX in this marathon (and probably FFVI as well), and so I've been working on a single-segment route for this game. I think I've got it all worked out now; I didn't have to change too much from my segmented run. Here are the major changes:
Sphere grid changes: First, I found that if I don't increase anyone's agility, the Yu Pagodas will never start moving again before I kill BFA (weird, but true). Then I'll give Yuna one MP node to make sure Shiva has enough MP to cast blizzara 4 times in the Isaaru battles. Last, I'll give Kimahri 3 more HP nodes, to make it more likely that I'll survive the Sin's Fins battles.
Spherimorph: I have Kimahri attack to discover its weakness. I make sure to steal a fish scale and arctic wind beforehand so that I can do a mix with any element (will already have bomb cores and lightning marbles).
Seymour (first): The strategy is almost the same, except that I haste Tidus and Kimahri instead of Seymour. Then I just try to survive for three rounds before doing self-destruct.
I still need a chocobo wing for BFA, but it's very unlikely I'll steal one on the first trip through Bikanel. So at the Calm Lands, I'll train a chocobo and go to Remiem Temple, then I'll win the race with 4 chests to win 30 pendulums. I can use those to customize Master Thief on Rikku, and then I'll go back to Bikanel once I have the airship and find a cactuar.
It's also very unlikely that I'll be able to steal any petrify grenades, so I'll use Kimahri's stone breath in place of those (on Wendigo and in the third Home battle).
I'll steal 2 more smoke bombs in Bikanel, to be used on Evrae and Defender X (eliminates some randomness in those battles).
I won't be getting the No Encounter ability, not even from Geosgaeno (I don't think it's worth the time to fight him). Because of this, I'll just steal all of the needed fire gems while climbing Gagazet, instead of bribing a Flan later.
I'll have Tidus learn Slice & Dice right before Seymour Flux. This will give me one more hit on Flux, slightly increasing my chances of defeating him.
Spectral Keeper: Trio and Slice & Dice will kill it.
Yunalesca: Tidus uses a chocobo feather (stolen in Bikanel) on himself first turn; this eliminates the one turn that Yunalesca got in my segmented run for some reason.
I've done a few test runs using these strategies, and the chances of getting game over are pretty low. In fact, it's more likely that I'll die by getting ambushed in a random encounter than against any of the bosses (which I really hope doesn't happen). A couple days ago I did a run through in about 3 or 4 sittings, and my final time was 11:33, only a little more than an hour longer than my segmented run. I'm pretty excited to do this, and it will be interesting to see how it goes during the marathon.
