Farringa just uploaded boss fights from his FF7 run to YouTube (hint, hint)
Everything's better with Magitek
Okay, did some more testing, and here's what I found:

-It's worth it to give Lulu the two magic nodes for Gui.  She's going to be traveling on the sphere grid anyway to get bribe, so it doesn't cost much to activate those nodes, and it allows me to summon Valefor earlier against Gui.  (Lulu casts fire on the head and body until Valefor can kill them with one overdrive.)

-Giving Tidus the strength sphere helps a lot against Extractor, and Yuna does fine without it.  (I found a better strategy for Isaaru's Bahamut anyway.)

-The difference between giving Tidus or Wakka (one or the other) a lightningstrike weapon for Extractor is minimal (about one turn).  But, if giving Wakka lightningstrike will allow him to kill the Sahagins in one hit, then it's better to get a lightningstrike weapon for him from Oblitzerator (if it's possible).

-I didn't realize that Spiral Cut can critical, but it happened while I was testing.  I don't think it changes any strategies, since I have other ways of doing more damage, but the battles where I use Spiral Cut (Klikk, Sinspawn Echuilles, Extractor) could become more annoying if I decide to retry until he does critical.  Still, the savings would probably be only a few seconds for each battle, so I may not worry about it.

Just a note:  I order a DVD recorder online, and it should be arriving tomorrow.  Before recording, I'll probably do another test run just to make sure all my plans for the run work out, and also to give me time to make sure the DVD recorder works.
100% runs=great to watch
Sounds like a great way to approach things with the dvd recorder and such Essentia.  We all await with great zeal!  8)

Good news!  I've got my DVD recorder, and I'm testing it out on this last test run that I'm doing.  So far, it seems to be working fine.

I've also confirmed that you can get a Thunder Ball from Oblitzerator.  I gave it to Wakka for the Sahagins at Luca, and it raised his attack from about 110 to 170.  The problem is, Sahagins have exactly 170 HP, and Wakka does anywhere from 166 to 171 damage.  Still, at least now he'll sometimes kill them in one hit, so I think it's worth it.  I'm also considering giving Wakka the strength sphere for Extractor, since the only useful place for Tidus to have it was on Extractor anyway.
Essentia, not sure why I didn't think of this earlier but this may be of  some use to you, its a damage calculator.

Hmm, that calculator's interesting.  It would have been more useful earlier when I was still planning things, but it still might come in handy.

Anyway, I just found that it's better to give the strength sphere to Tidus instead of Wakka, even if Wakka has lightningstrike (probably because I use Tidus's overdrive in that battle).  Also, maybe this is common knowledge, but does spiral cut do more damage if you have more time left?
I know it time matters in the international version but I don't think it does in the American one, same for all timed OD's. Might want to check a second source on that though. I'm starting to get excited for your run, sounds like your getting close.
According to the second Overdrive FAQ at GameFAQs (the one by PFriedman), damage is supposed to increase with time remaining regardless of version. This can be trusted somewhat since the section immediately before lists changes in the Int. version, and that only nerfed a couple overdrive mode increments.

In either case, this is a speedrun, and any time spent waiting for another attempt at the mark is time wasted (that and it isn't that hard to hit on the first go-around). Tongue

Yeah, I'm planning to reset anyway if I don't hit it the first time. Smiley  I was just curious, since I'd seen spiral cut do different amounts during practice, and I wanted to know if that was the reason.

Just letting everyone know that I've officially started recording this!  I'll mainly keep track of my progress in my sig, but I'll still post updates in this thread periodically.

So, that's 1 segment down, and 49 more to go! Wink
Hurray for recording! I wanted to test some things on Gui so I'd better get there quick >_>

Are you planning uploading as you go, just certain parts now (aka bosses), or all at the end?

If someone didn't say it before: try to get a no encounter weapon as soon as possible. Think that is one big key saving time
edit: passing by unimportant battles(that give low experience points) can save a lot of time if you know the strategy in how to beat harder enemies.

I haven't quite decided yet.  I know I won't upload the entire run, but I might do certain parts.

Definitely; I'm going to get one from a Ghost in the Sunken Cave.  Unfortunately, that segment, without a doubt, will be the most frustrating segment in this run.

Think you understood anaway but read my edit. Another thing is to get Haste and Hastega quickly and this you shall look up in the sphere grid how to get to it quickest and with who.

After Besaid, the only random encounters I fight are two Ragoras in Kilika (to fill aeon overdrives and get mana spheres) and one Mi'ihen Fang (uses Tidus's OD and gives Yuna one more sphere level for Gui).  Tidus learns haste just before Gui, but instead of hastega, I steal a chocobo wing from a Cactuar.

Ok. Another idea I have is the first blitz ball game and loosing is the only outcome(I think). True or not my idea is to keep the ball in your defence zone as much as you can because they not seem to attack that much there and time will run much faster. A way to avoid encounters as much as is possible

You can win the match against the Luca Goers.
I know in his run, KADFC/Kaddygamer won by... well, I don't know exactly how to explain it, but here's a link to the first part of the blitzball segment:

OK it's possible but surely not a good idea in a speedrun.

Yes, it is a good idea to win the blitzball tournament, because the strength sphere that you win is useful.  My plan for the blitzball game is to start with the ball and just swim next to the goalie in the first half  (boring, I know).  Then in the second half I'll score once with sphere shot (can't use this in the first half, unfortunately) just before 3 minutes on the timer.  Then hopefully I'll get the ball again after Wakka comes in so I can just kill time.

Edit: I've got segment 2 recorded, but I'd really like to get it without any piranha encounters.  I know it's possible to do, so I'm going to keep trying.

This game is too much haphazard but like you just said trying and trying is the way. Sooner or later you'll do it. I remember when I encountered Seymore in Mt gagazet and only once manged to get Youjimbo to use Zanamoto. It was a one strike win but for som reason(I wanted to pay less gills) I wanted to rebattle him but I never managed to use the Zanamoto attack again even if I paid the same amount or more. Sad

You sure? I was shocked when I got only 2 encounters. If this is possible things are going to be a bit harder for me >_>

Maybe we're thinking of different places.  The part I'm talking about is where you first swim down underwater with Rikku, between the ship and inside the airship ruins.  I know I've done that part before with no encounters before (although I usually get one).  I was going to end my segment 2 just inside the ruins, but after having so much trouble with it, I think I'm going to save on the ship deck instead.  It'll lose a few seconds, but that's better than getting an encounter.
Oh yeah, I was thinking of Besaid. It feels like I get an encounter off the ship 50-60% of the time. Where are you planning on making your segments/how many? I'm guessing 1 for each boss (though there are a couple that can be combined like Spherimorph and Crawler or OD sin and Omnis) and maybe a couple for when you need steals, ect.?

Yeah, I usually get 3 encounters at Besaid.  Right now I'm planning to have 50 segments (which is 7 fewer than the Ultima Garden run).  I'll list where I'm planning to save on each segment:

Edit: I also put the times that I got on my best practice run.  Some of them have ?'s because I didn't write down my time for those.

1 (0:21) Ruins Hall (before getting flint)
2 (0:34) Salvage Ship Deck (after sphere grid tutorial)
3 (0:53) Besaid Beach
4 (1:19) Crusaders' Lodge (after doing Besaid temple)
5 (1:30) Besaid Beach
6 (?:??)  Kilika Jungle
7 (2:07) Kilika Temple
8 (?:??)  Luca Docks ( just before fighting the machina)
9 (2:54?) Luca Locker Room (right before the blitzball game)
10 (3:09) Luca After the Finals
11 (3:31) Mi'ihen Highroad South
12 (3:49) Mi'ihen Travel Agency
13 (?:??)  Mushroom Rock Road
14 (4:01?) Mushroom Rock Headquarters (just before Operation Mi'ihen
15 (4:31) Djose Highroad
16 (4:46) Djose Temple (after going inside the temple)
17 (4:55) Moonflow South (before riding Shoopuf)
18 (5:02) Moonflow North (after Extractor)
19 (5:30) Thunder Plains South (first save point)
20 (5:47) Macalania Woods South(beginning)
21 (5:52) Macalania Woods (just before Spherimorph)
22 (5:59) Macalania Travel Agency
23 (6:10) Macalania Temple (before Seymour)
24 (6:23) Macalania Temple (just outside the temple, after fighting Seymour)
25 (6:27) Macalania Lake Crevasse (before Wendigo)
26 (6:37) Bikanel Island Oasis
27 (6:42) Bikanel Island East (save point by Rikku)
28 (6:53) Home (just before going inside)
29 (7:12) Airship cabin (before fighting Evrae)
30 (7:29) Bevelle Priests' Passage (before cloister of trials)
31 (7:44) Via Purifico (save point by Auron)
32 (7:54) Via Purifico Waterway (first save point with Tidus)
33 (8:03) Bevelle Highbridge (second save point, just before Natus)
34 (8:19) Macalania North (just before Calm Lands)
35 (8:26) Calm Lands Bridge
36 (8:29) Calm Lands Gorge
37 (8:31) Calm Lands Gorge (after getting No Encounters)
38 (?:??)  Mt. Gagazet (just after Biran and Yenke)

40 (9:02) Mt. Gagazet Cave (first save point)
41 (9:31) Zanarkand Dome (inside the temple)
42 (?:??) Zanarkand Temple (just after the trials)
43 (9:40) Zanarkand Temple Chamber of the Fayth
44 (?:??) Calm Lands (after beating Yunalesca, but before going to Bevelle)
45 (10:12) Airship Cabin (just before fighting Sin's fins)
46 (??:??)  Airship Bridge (after talking to Yuna)
47 (??:??)  Sin Near Airship
48 (??:??)  Sin Sea of Sorrow (before Omnis)
49 (10:46) Sin Tower of the Dead (final save)
50 (11:12) End
I'd try to either eliminate (by going straight to Crawler) or move the save for segment 22  (Macalania Travel Agency) to the same save point as segment 21. Entering the agency takes time and IIRC there is some dialogue you have to go through there too if you enter. I'm almost certain you can get no encounters in the area on a straight run through, if not then at most 1.  Eliminating could be a pain but would definitely be your fastest option.
