You go into the cave and navigate... you'll get a no encounters right off the bat so, maybe an extra minute to get down there... fight yojimbo... not exactly sure how long this will take... prob just get rikku to mix battle is likely looking at ~3 minutes with the whole Lulu thing.. you can tele back out... but we also have to consider, the time it takes to build up rikkus overdrive EVERY time whereas yojimbo can be manipulated to simply be summoned and have zanmato ... I got to thinking and I'd rather only build up overdrive on yuna for yojimbo for BFA... in the end, I think yojimbo will save loads of time compare to mix and using... oh well... I will be leaving a very specific save when i get the no encounters so that if things aren't going so great, I can go back to that point and not get yojimbo

That sounds good.  Without having a direct comparison, it would be very hard to tell if it does save time.

Also, how long out of the way is it to get the Chocobo Wings?  I'm starting to think that it actually will come down to a choice between Trio and Yojimbo.  A combination of both just seems like it's sacrificing too much time in an effort to save it.

I'd check this myself, but I have no files near those points.  The only files I have is a 100% file close to 200 hours and a NSG file that's too far anyway.  Plus they're both on the NTSC version, and all I have with me is a 'backed up' International version.

I don't see how you plan to really use Zanmato, the prices are usually high, and with running from battles... There isn't much money on the field and from boss fights to make up for it.

giving him 1024 gil the very first time you use him yeilds a 17% chance he will use zamato... every time he successfully uses it, your compatibility goes up by 4... after 8 successful uses that is increased to 22% (flux sanctuary specral yunalesca*3 sin left/right) ... of course the percent goes up every time you successfully get it off... (by about 0.6% if i remember correctly)... so really it'll just be redoing the segment over and over till it pops out... in some segments, we might be looking at a much smaller margin (yunalesca) which is where the overdrives will come in, increasing the chances by quite a bit (about 30%)

darkwasabi - ... yeah, I was really wondering how useful the mix will become after yojimbo as well... there is an obvious time difference when comparing the two techniques in battle... I'll likely save mix for the final battle with Yu Yevon and the aeons... make things quick and easy

Hmm, interesting. Only 1024? heh. Well, best of luck, hope the generators turn out in your favor.

dont worry... they wont... Sad

Currently I'm trying to get auron to crit with his dragon fang... but he wont crit the boss... ive had him crit on three of the sinspawn on one round... but no boss in like 12 attempts... I think I'm going to have to break the segment in two... If I actually get thins, I dont want it screwed over by the sinspawn in the next battle refusing to flicker their wings  :-/ Also demi seems to be the big deciding factor in my final time... I had a crap run everywhere else but auron crit'd the boss (not dragon fang, just normal hits) 3 times... i think it saved on 2 demis and I got low 25...

HA, I'd drink to that

I have no solution, but i admire the problem.

then again, I was also thinking of making special boss videos

That would be very nice, imo, since not everyone wants to watch a full FFX run and since there should be pretty interesting tactics for bosses if you only worked them out well.

I now know why there hasn't been a run for this game on this site yet.

A week ago I followed the Speed Run FAQ posted by the topic creator and got a time of more than 13 hours by the time I reached the final save point of the game.

The reason for this time is because I upgraded the sphere grid more than I should have, kept changing weapons more than I should have and did many other things more than I should have because doing those things made the run fun for me. And I honestly had to make the run more fun because watching the same cinema scenes over and over was not fun; it was excruciating! Also, it being my first time actually using the speed run FAQ as a walkthrough saw me (once in a while) revert to bad "must-collect-everything" habits that are hard for me to break. In a serious run I would obviously take a minimalist approach, however.

Also, I can't even beat BFA as quickly as the speed run FAQ says I should; I can't consistently get Tidus' Slice and Dice to hit as many times as needed so that I just need one overdrive attack from Bahamut to finish BFA's first form off. I hit the center on the first try but sometimes I get 2:46 instead of 2:56; I really wish I knew how to get it closer to 3:00. If you miss that annoying millisecond bar to gain one extra strike on Tidus' Slice and Dice, you have to reset and go through the random icicle tower and then watch the annoying family reunion again and again. Totally frustrating.

I now know the pain of people who have speed run games with cinema that you can't skip.

Anyway, I'm in university and I have no time to seriously attempt this run until May 2007 (won't be home for winter holidays), so if no one has submitted a run for this game yet, I might attempt one then. Here's hoping someone else speedruns this game. Wink

Okay now that I have actually read all the posts in this topic, wow a Zanmato run? I never realized it would take only 1024 gil to get a 17% chance of zanmato. That sounds awesome.

As for boss battle only videos; they're not good in my opinion.
There are plenty of boss battle only videos on Youtube but who cares how some guy does in a boss battle when he has played the game for 350 hours? To me, skill can only be shown if you show every step up to that battle and that can only be done through a start-to-finish speed run.

Also, don't believe using Zanmato or Trio of 9999 is lack of skill; speedrunning this game is frustrating and takes a lot of skill in itself. When speedrunning, you always take the fastest route possible, no exceptions. Therefore don't feel bad about using what the game allows you to use to get the fastest time possible.

Indeed. I hate the damn RNG on this game now since I've done most of No Sphere Grid, No Summon, No Customize, No Overdrive(No Escape, No No Encounters, No Blitzball). It took me 3 wins against Greater Sphere to get my Phoenix Bracer, and the fight takes at least 1 hr 30 minutes because he has to be killed by doom. Demonolith was an ass in giving me Stoneproof armors, it took me a lot of Don Tonberry kills to get Zombiestrike for Auron.

Then BFA takes a long time just to make it to the second form, and if he decides to kill Rikku or use the Sword Swipe during that form, you lose. Critical Jecht Beams(which is BS since it's a magical attack), Jecht Beam in general, Rikku killing sprees etc. There's a reason no one has managed it yet, and it's that damn RNG.
Everything's better with Magitek
It's true, the RNG is a pain in this game.  I did a No Sphere Grid, No Summon, No Overdrive challenge all the way up to BFA, and the guide I was using said it would probably take a dozen tries to beat him, but I've still never managed it.  I can't imagine doing No Customize, No Escape, No No Encounters, and No Blitzball as well.
Heyyy... wait.. i don't know you. Don't confuse me
Are there any news for this one?

Just tellme (or us, hope im not the only one waiting ^^) if it will be done, or not. All that waiting... its horrible  :-[  Grin
We all scream for Eyes Cream
Won't be done unless someone does one themself and puts it on a site like Youtube. The amount of time it takes to run this game is over the 7 hour limit.
100% runs=great to watch
The 7 hour limit is not a hard and fast rule.  Case by case basis depending on everything is the way it works out IIRC.  We've got run on SDA well above 7 hours.

My run of FFIX is going to be around 8:30.  If the game is popular, they'll allow it.  I think the reason this isn't done is because it's so annoying...*points to unskippable cutscenes*
King of hearts
KADFC is doing it.

The longest run is just shy of 8 hours. The key is to just skip what you can.

The longest run is just over 9 hours actually, although it's a 100% run. The second longest is just shy of 8 hours. To make this post more relevant, I love this game and wish I could be of more help. Unfortunately, I've never been good at thinking up fast strategies for RPGs.

Which one is that? I only saw the Chrono run.

Donkey Kong 64 100% run is 9:02.

Oh yeah, that's right. Back to the point, whoever is working on the run, are you planning to use any other overdrives other than Mix?
Dragon Fang (Forced)
Spiral Cut (Depending)
Elemental Reels (Depending on Luck, not the luck one expects)
Stone Breath
Shooting Star
Self Destruct (Need more calculations, AP-wise)

Aeon's Overdrives (Limited)

BTW, I'm not doing International.

backtrack to Mt. Gagazet and grab a few Holy Waters. Anyway, are you planning to buy the Slowstrike sword for Tidus In Luca?
