Soon. I have to get a new motherboard. I'm on a shitty $300 Acer laptop atm. I'll order that tomorrow evening and get it rushed so I can finally have an honest-to-god computer.

Hey, those Acer netbooks aren't bad for basic stuff.  I can watch NQ videos, read email, browse the web, watch streams, and play some basic games.  And it's got a damn good battery life...
not mine. It lags to hell
Hey guys. Taken quite an interest in this project and thought I'd have a crack at it myself as I've always loved this game. Already made quite a few notes on how to (hopefully) improve on the 8:47 time shown here but when it comes to actually starting the game I run into quite a snag.

The first few times I tried to run the first couple of segments I always found my times were noticably slower than wasabis'. After checking this thread I found that you could increase the speed of disk reading on PS2s. So I did that, started the game from scratch and ran it next to wasabis run to see where the time is lost.

I found that the game takes half a second longer to fade into Squall on the medi-bed and the animation of him getting up is slower too. This is obvious at every load screen from here on out.

My question is: am I right thinking the problem lies in the state of my FF8 disk or the PS2? Both are quite battered and bruised as I've had them for years.

I'm interested in all progress being taken in this thread and hope to add to it myself... once this problem is overcome.

Cheers.

Are you using the NTSC (american) version? European versions are usually slower.
The PAL version is around 16% slower.
King of hearts
I didn't expect this thread to be on the front page after all the time I've been away.  Much less someone actively attempting it.  I seriously hope for the best of luck to you guys attempting this game.  If you have any questions about anything in my run, ask.  It's been a while but I'm still quite knowledgeable about the game.  I'll try to keep checking on this thread for any updates/questions I might have input for.

To the guys doing the run, are you using the walking trick to avoid some encounters?  If you're trying to improve on my run that's a good place to start.
I will knock you all down!
Just wanted to let you know that Carc has started uploading his run on Youtube.

I googled but i cant find out what these fish fins are for. BTW there is a strategy wiki on sda that currently has no entry on ff8. i would appreciate it if you used it.
You take the fish fins to change them into 100 waterspells. These will push the attack.

Segment 3.
Heyyy... wait.. i don't know you. Don't confuse me
I demand updates on this here thread!
I'm whittling down my queue. Be patient.
Hi all,

Lurker here. Just popped in to say that an FF8 run would be the most hotly anticipated SDA update, as far as I'm concerned. Seems like it's been a long time coming. Best of luck.

In Theory.. 10 years in the making.. beats Sykos 100% D2 run hehe

So I've been playing with the glitch that allows you to skip naming Rinoa (someone uploaded a video to YouTube: ).  I can reproduce the glitch, but not easily.  It takes many, many attempts for me, running at Watts and the door.  Does anyone have a reliable way to reproduce this glitch, e.g., a special way of wiggling the analog stick to get past Watts?

Thanks for the input!

Stopped, not quit.

I have 6 segments out of around 25 done.

Poxnor, do you have the NTSC or PAL version of the game?

I'm playing the NTSC version of the game.

The most reliable method that I've found so far is to stand to Watts' right, against the wall that contains the door you want to get through.  Starting about one and a half steps to his right, I start running to the left.  When I'm about to bump into Watts, I rotate the stick roughly 45 to 60 degrees clockwise to get by him.

I'd say I can succeed about 1/6 times with that method.  Given that you skip two and a half minutes of dialogue, it's worth it, even if it takes me a few tries (I'm playing single-segment).  That said, I was just curious if anyone else had a more reliable approach.

I already knew about this trick from some time ago, but since Rinoa is wholly unused in this run, this is a good idea. I'm not too far in the run, so I can make a minor edit to include it.

Thanks for sharing your input and maybe giving me some motivation to finish a few more segments. I figured out a few new tricks, so I might actually restart the run altogether and go for broke. Certain things about my progress so far bother me... Like the fact I'm not playing on a PSP.

Awesome!  What sort of tricks did you find? Smiley

Speaking of tricks: do you know of any way to luck-manipulate the Quistis and Zell cards into play (from the Trepies and Zell's mom, respectively)?  It can be a real deal-breaker when I'm trying single segment, if I have to play 15 games before the card I want comes into play.  I'm thinking of skipping the Zell card, but I'm concerned that I'll seriously miss that Str+60%, e.g., on the Ragnarok and against Ultimacia.
Well, that's why they call it luck manipulation lol

Restart it until you get it.

One trick I found was for animation canceling which I posted about a page or two back. Basically, hold L2+R2 to run during an inescapable fight. Although you can't run, it keeps your character from doing the 'ready up' animation before they execute commands. Like, how when you go to do a limit break, Squall ever so slowly gets up before he performs a limit break and the enemy has an opportunity to attack. If you're 'running away' and nothing else is happening on screen, you can use a limit break pretty much on the frame right after you select it.

LOL Cheesy

What I meant to ask was if anyone had figured out how to manipulate the PRNG seed (or whatever the entropy source is) for Triple Triad.  I hadn't seen anything like that in this thread, and I haven't been able to find any FAQs either Wink

I think I may have found a small improvement in Segment 10 of darkwasabi's run (though bear with me if I'm wrong; I'm pretty new to this...).

Just after 18:30 into Segment 10, Irvine suggests a party where he gets to travel with the "babes" Wink
It's faster to disagree with him and choose a different party.  If you don't disagree, there's a big scene in which he goes on about how the ladies love him, and Rinoa and Selphie play along.

However, you can disagree with him (allowing you to choose your own party), then choose Quistis and Zell as your companions (leaving him with Rinoa and Selphie).  All he says is, "Good choice, Mr. Leader."  The conversation is a few dialogue boxes shorter than if you choose a different party than the one he suggested.

Cheers

I had not thought about that, but I did work a character switch into my own route regardless.

Considering load times vs. text skipping, I think I'd rather take the relatively short load times to load the Party Switch menu over "IRVY KINNYPOO! I'LL MAEK U HAPPY!".
Moo! Flap! Hug!
I noticed a small change that could be made to the Biggs, Wedge, and Elvoret battle to gain an extra 4 AP.  I don't think that 4 AP would make any difference to darkwasabi's run, but I'm pointing it out here in case anyone is considering an alternative ability-learning-order, or some such.

Once you do enough damage to Biggs and Wedge, Elvoret appears.  However, both Biggs and Wedge still have their own HP counters.  Deplete them, and you get 4 AP each, in addition to Elvoret's 10 AP.  In his run, darkwasabi uses Squall's limit break twice on Biggs, getting 14 AP in total.  If you limit break Biggs the first time then Wedge the second time, you get 18 AP.

Cheers
