This IS my favorite FF of all time. I cant wait to see some videos of the run. Me and my friend did a single segment run of the game, played from Noon to about midnight. It wasnt a fast run since we went through and got most of the summons and gear.
Plus going to heaven and hell with encounter-none on and getting full triple and haste on whichever two toons you want and then full out gunblade ownage with squall.
It's not that it's really tricky, but wouldn't you rather save after the whole 3~ minute conversation and go straight to battle rather than to save before it and have to go through it every time if something doesn't go well?
Maybe if the random encounters at the Training Center could be avoided then I'd save before it, but we've already determined it'll be the same always.
Though I wouldn't waste the time to save again if you already did.
Sorry for the double post. This was a tricky segment. Darkwasabi, I know it was said earlier random encounters are always the same and all though save points and menu entries change them a little. I have done this segment about 20 times and sometimes I get an encounter sometimes I don't. That's 10 seconds after my save and without any menu's checked. Very odd.
I also had the bad luck of not being able to have a boosted shiva or quetzalcoatl, hence I needed to do some switching as well, annoying but neccesary.
The Raldo's are on crack once Granaldo dies, as in I cannot have Squall at to low hp because they just like to attack 3 to 6 times before it's my turn. So I gulped a potion before battle. It's still pretty ok, also got some blinds for Diablos.
I did decide to split the segment into two, you mentioned the 3 minute conversation, well that's just the bit inside the [secret area], I also had to go through the center all the time from the dorm, so I split after the [secret area].
Hence I have two more segments done, 7 and 8, here is an update:
good job, but wai didnt you take the boost for shiva? wai do you use the PC version? it has bad music quality. i had 1:09 after the secret area and 1:11 after granaldo, so it seems like you lost like 2 min there.
Bad music quality.. I don't know, personally the quality of FF8 music is bad in general since everything but Liberti Fitali and the ending song is a midi.
Anyways 1:11 on what system? And yes I indeed didn't take the boost for Shiva, as I mentioned in my last post.

the music in the PC version sounds like some wierd MIDI but on PSX it sounds great. compare:
PC:
PS:
same thing in ff7, they messed up the music. the one winged angel in the PC speedrun which is on SDA sounds lol... well it doesn't matter that much.

psx, ntsc, with emulator.

You oughta read a bit about how MIDI works. The PC version just uses a basic soundfont bank. Anyways...
Emulators are not allowed here anyways.
I didn't take the boost for two reasons. 1 I wanted more AP and two I didn't think I'd need it. Also it doesn't save 2 minutes, my Quetzalcoatl knocked out the Raldo's except 1, which I hit with Squall.
Heyyy... wait.. i don't know you. Don't confuse me
Aren't you going to use Quetza any more? Like for X-ATM092? The boost could bring it down in 1 attack. But then again, im sure you thought of that and besides, im not about crunching numbers ^^
I used Quetzalcoatl to beat down the Graldo's, but like Shiva I didnt get Boost with him, mabye a mistake in restrospect. It doesn't cost me much more then 10 seconds though since Quetzalcoatl was still able to kill 2 outright and almost bring the third down.
Just finish this up already I think, that not only me is waiting like a madman and every starting from point 0 (because of few minutes) is just friggin mad. I mean ... can't You do and send first run with a few mistakes? This way there will be at least a run of a game. I know, it won't be perfect, but come on - can You say, that there is always a perfect run? This few minutes is taking a very few months
I won't restart for this, but I am not that far yet and don't expect me to finish it off fast. Mabye DarkWasabi can do a real quick and sloppy run to have a official time up.
Well I don't aim to have 9:30 - 10:00 but I really can't say just yet. I want an official time up eventually yes. If Wasabi beats it, good! More competition. It's just to bad I don't see any big shortcuts beside the tomb.
I'm sorry i'll have to agree that PSX version is way better than PC, just like FF7. A lot because of music. I would not watch a 8+ hours of PC version, even if you do great job. And even if it's a run i'm really waiting for. Just being honnest... sorry. :-/
Same for FF7, i didnt watched more than 5 or 6 segments of SDA PC's version, and i'm really waiting for PSX full run.
Me too! I played the PC version of this game myself, although I never finished it. The audio quality is bad, but thanks to winamp / media player / vlc / software of your choice this can be dealt with.
@Essentia: You`re pregnand / expecting? Yay for you if you are!
