Who cares about song ? You should talk about Farringa's run (GarlandG's too as well) instead of wondering if PS and PC version got midi or wav song. I don't think the nature of these (beautiful) songs is an important thing in a speedrun forum. More important: the loadings ! I watched 67 segments now and even if Farringa (GarlandG) strategies are impressive and efficient, this is the shortness of the loadings between map/battles that really chocked me. Now I just wait for GarlandG's run on PS version to see if it will really be possible to complete the game with a time under 8h (on PS ver and without Caith Sith cheating limit break).
what's that limit break? dice? and why is it cheating?
I think it's the Dice, yes. Or is it the slot machine thing?
For the cheating question: no real reason. It's one of those arbitrary unwritten rules that FFVII low-level/speed players set forth for the community long ago. If someone were to use it and submit it to SDA, I'm sure it would obsolete any run that didn't use it--Radix doesn't care about arbitrary community-imposed limitations.
It is his Slots limit break. It is not a cheat, its just another move, like Setzers Slots in FF6 (though there is no Echo screen item glitch to abuse here.), Selphies 'The End' in FF8, and to a lesser degree Zanamto in FF10.
All moves that do a random attack, one of which is an instant win for your party.
From what I can tell it is the least abusable from that list also. It is a limit break, so he of course needs the limit bar to fill and so can not do the move whenever he wants. Its also a Level2 limit break, he has to unlock it before he can use it.
I watched a couple random segments from this, and I just have to say I find it funny how you gained a bunch of levels from Jenova Synth at the end. Good stuff!
Regarding the music questions that have been popping up, the PC version of the game uses Yamaha's XG MIDI standard. So yes, it is MIDI, but it uses a Yamaha XG wavetable synth (or a Yamaha XG soundfont) permitting a larger range of sounds than with general MIDI.
The music in the PSX version is encoded in a format called PSF (Portable Sound Format) which was created by Neill Corlett in 2003 when he ripped the music data out of PSX games using his knowledge of the R3000 assembly language. It is a sequenced format similar to MOD, IT, or XM, that relies on samples for playback.
There are also some streamed songs in the XA format. One-Winged Angel may or may not have been one of these, I don't know off-hand. It's possible that it was just a PSF containing the special choir samples.
Yeah, Neill Corlett is the guy who made the standard of PSF, which is a way of ripping PSX music without changing its structure too much - it is not the original format on the PSX disc. I forget what the actual name is, but the terms 'SEQ' and 'VAB' come to mind.
By the way, nice run. Nothing too surprising, but solid.
Lag has it right. The PSF is more or less a rip of the music data from the game that is played back through a program called Highly Experimental which Neill developed to emulate the PSX sound chip. The music data on the game disc isn't really in a "format" as we think of it (like MP3 or WAV) because it's programmed specifically to be read by the DSP on the PSX. Neill ripped it and created a file format based on that.
Naturally the two versions of the game will sound different because their sounds aren't programmed the same way nor are they generated the same way. Also, the reverb and other effects are specific to the PSX hardware; XG MIDI has its own reverb.
Hi I'm a new Member, I'm from Germany(sorry if my english is bad ^^) and FF 7 is my favourite of all games. I followed this topic a while and discovered something in the run itself. At the shinra building, the floor with the books(I don't know it's number) Farringa read a book to get the password, but when I play this part, I always tell the guy the password is mako without reading a book before. I always get the codecard plus the element materia. I don't if it's a glitch in version but it saves some seconds if don't have to read a book before telling the password. I don't have something to record it yet. But you should test it yourself. It may work in your version too!
I always just guess until I hit the right one and reset and do it again. The password is different every time you play, established upon start of a new game (bombers' code in zelda: majora's mask works the same way iirc).

No, it's generated every time you enter a room, after you reload from saving.
Actually, in my version (pc-german, patched and not patched) it's always MAKO and i never read the books, except for the first time. I was wondering, too, when watching that segment.
I think I've figured it out yet.I replayed this part again and picked Mako. It was not correct, but you'll get the element materia if keep on talking to him even if picked the wrong password. He just says something like: "I did'nt expect you to get it on your first try." And then you receive the materia. I never read what he says before so I always thought mako was right when I choose it. ^^
