It's allowable, but with the crappy low level that you stay at, it takes forever or never.

I was trying to use that for Diablo, but after 10 minutes, it still didn't show up. I didn't need to use that much time just to beat him with my way. Also, while doing that trick, the timer is still running, which is not good.
That 3:19 is pretty interesting to me right now. I've got 2:11 and I'm about to start the train scenrio in Timber. And to say that I'm going to finsih this disc close to an hour is kinda impossible, for me at least, but I never know how fast the rest of the disc will proceed.

One question, is my time actually considered slow right now?

I have no idea.  The only one I remember from disk one is that time of 3:19.  I erased all the other files so that I can have a place I can save and not worry, wasting time deciding where to save.  I'm pissed now because I did that and deleted my end of disk 1 save file.  I have a picture I took of it that's in pretty shitty condition (how do you take good photos of stuff on tv, I mean what settings), but I really wanted it to be archived on my memory card.

Try to do more control points with time! I plan to improve my time and it would be desirable to compare to something!

Oops, disregard my last post.  It was on one of my other memory cards lol.  I found another save at Galbadia- Monterosa Plateau with 2:41.  It's after the whole "aah Seifer's dead, they talk about him in the past tense.  Well not me.  I WON'T HAVE IT!  *listens to Linkin Park*" part, lol.  The saves are scattered about, that one is the sixth file and 3:19 is the seventh.

I saved there so I can do the rest of the disk without saves but I found out that the student ID would change each time I reset at that spot.  I had to make another outside of the town so it would work.  So in conclusion, the ID is set when you enter the town.  Could be during dream world though.

*sigh* This is really annoying.  A lot of people don't believe my time at the beginning of disk 2 and I don't know how to get a picture somewhere, like a site that'll host a picture.  Please, someone tell me where I can do this for free.  Can I use Yahoo briefcase or what?  Thanks in advance.

I know...  It's just that I've spent a damn long time comming up the perfect (or what I think is the perfect) way to go about the game.  Learning all necessary abilities and quickest ways to beat bosses took sooo much trial and error that I don't want someone else completing this before me.  I can only work on this during the weekend because school is so demanding.  Right now I have a two day vacation so I can try to get a lot done.  As I've said before, I will post my entire game strategy once I'm done.

For the first disk though, it's very simple.  Mostly use renzokuken, get at least 5 fish fins but save before, so you would only get into 2 battles, reset if one of the two battles doesn't give you at least 3.  Four is the max and it's about a 1/10 chance for each to drop 2 instead of one.  So that's 4 F-Fs with you only needing one to drop 2 instead of one.  I used to be able to calculate that probability but I forgot :-[...  Use laser eye and renzokuken in those battles to save as much time as possible.  The rest is just knowing what abililties to learn when, I'll leave that up to you (the reader)  ;).

The runthrough is not mostly your skill at playing, but the way you go about it.  Anyone can get a good speed once they know what to do.  I spent a whole week just comming up with a way to go about the game and never actually playing it.  Though through the course of this thread dying and school starting some of that has changed a bit since I on my spare time I try to think of better ways, but very little.

Ok heres a link, I don't know if this is what you're supposed to do but...

Same here...nobody lose heart at it. Grin

Same, speed running is all about the effort you put into it after all, so this seems brilliant.

Yes!  Just finnished disk 2.  Time:  6:20.  I'm a little shaken up now because of the fight with Edea.  She's not hard but that last segment was very long and I really didn't want to mess up.  I'm not sure how much time could be taken off because I sent Rinoa with me during the missile part.  I think that adds an extra minute because of the extra scenes.  This is great because this is about 2 hours shorter than my test run.

In case anyone wants to know, these are some saves I kept:

Great!
Little advice : Try to compress images a little -) (400x300 and 60% Jpeg would be nice)

And btw, can you visit us at our disscussion here :

We have almost all things for the final settings, but little improvement from your side would be great Wink

Since I didn't really want to continue my game I decided to test things I've been wanting to know.

One of them being, how much off is the timer in FF8 from real time.  After leaving it on in the menu for 57 minutes is was actually 7 seconds faster...  It's really nothing to take notice of, since it will never really affect things.

The other was to see how much time does the Fast Disk Speed option on the PS2 save compared to Standard.  This only affects the load times of certain scene changes.  The scene must have a lot to load for a noticable difference.  For example:  I've tested the part of Ultimacia's castle where you have to walk over the bridge so the key won't fall.  The scene change from there to the inside of the tower, the north part of that area.

Going into that area, it is 1.5 seconds quicker with the Fast Disk Speed option.  Exiting that area to the inside of the tower had no change.  I'd say about 50-60% of all scene changes would have some time saved.  This is a rough estimation and is very open to discussion.  I'd also say there's no more than 150-200 scene changes in total on a singe disk.  I don't know if 150-200 is an extreme overestimation though, seems like a lot.  Anyway...

So that'd be:  (175 x .55 x 1.5 sec) x 1 min/60 sec = 2.40625 min (using the mean of both estimations).  These are all overestimations and it should be less than this.

I use the Fast Disk Speed option and thought it should be taken into consideration for my time of 3:19 for those that might attempt this and can't beat it because they don't use the PS2.  So if I did everything exactly the same without this option, my time should be 3:21 or 3:22.  Then again I also made some mistakes that could save a couple of minutes so someone could still beat this time without Fast Disk Speed.

It'd be very helpfull for someone to experiment with this more, since this is where I am going to stop.

ARRRRGH!  Damn 10 posts per 24 hr period on the GameFaqs forum, damn no editing feature, damn adds, damn not being able to quote someone without a crapload of work...  Hope you guys don't mind me posting it here, sorry.

"Can you tell us these abillities ?

And btw, which version of FFVIII you using ? May be here we have same NTSC-PAL thing like one in the FFVII and times are little different." - TsukiNoNeko

Leviathan - Auto-Potion:  necessary to beat Ultimacia with only Limit ulocked.  Carbuncle - Recov Med-RF:  to make mega potions for Omega.  Pandemona (lol because I was tapping x he was named Pandemon0) - Initiative and Spd-J.  Alexander (on my last segment I forgot to make Pandemon0 learn Initiative and wasted 84 AP, I then had to redo it and missed Alexander because I used Draw and Limit at the same time, but limits always go first, so I missed him) - Med Data:  helpful for the Omega battle, mega potion heals 2000 instead of 1000, but not necessary.

And about the NTSC-PAL difference.  I'd doubt they'd make the same mistake again but who knows.  I have NTSC.  Maybe I can experiment with someone who has the PAL version.  You can IM me on AIM, my SN is CyclicOzone (yes it is a very nerdy name, there's a small story behind it).
That's BS... you're actually stopping? You're not serious are you? So are you going to type out the FAQ? What about the Omega Speed Run?

Ignore the question asked before, you're using NTSC, that's the same thing I'm using.

From your list, only Levi and Pandemona applies, the others are for your challenge. Yet, I'm still wonder if Auto-Potion is needed though, but I know much of what is needed and not needed. Yet, if the Spd-J Scroll is gotten, why is Pandemona needed? Will Intitiave be really that effective?

I'm still saying to post on gamefaqs, but hey, it's your call. Stay on there for a full week and you can post 30 messages. Also Shura has posted something on there as well.

Oh no, lol.  I didn't mean I'm going to stop the run, just testing the Fast Disk Speed option.  Sorry for the misunderstanding...

Pandemona is very useful since once you get Initiative you can then change the Battle Speed to low and kill enemies before they get an attack off and waste time.  And an extra person with Spd-J is very useful, not to mention essential for the Omega battle.

Also, Auto-Potion is necessary because it is almost guaranteed that you will be attacked with Apocalypse.  The first thing final Ultimacia does is Hell's Judgement.  That'll trigger Auto-Potion, but it'll give you enough time to squeeze in a limit.  After that she either does Hell's Judgement again or Draw Apocalypse.  If she does Draw Apocalypse, you will not have enough time to kill her before she casts it.  If she does Hell's Judgement again, you might be able to beat her before Apocalypse comes, but it's a very slim chance.  I tested this while having 90 something Spd with all 3 characters and stopped before the last attack, when she says "And...".  I waited for her to cast it so I can see how much time it takes for her to cast.  It was a very small amount of time.  So you won't be able to kill her before Apocalypse in the run.  Unless she can cast Hell's Judgement 3 times in a row, but I've never seen that happen.

I'd say around 9:30 after Omega.  I don't know if this run would be accepted here though.  I also didn't record this since I didn't think I'd be able to save this much time.  It's up to Radix because I'm going to redo it anyway.  Maybe if enough people want it he'd accept it even if it is pretty long.  Heck, my friend with dial up said he'd DL it if it would be accepted.

Ok, I just want to make a few things clear:

1)  Radix, would you accept this run?  It will be around 9 hours (I haven't completed it yet).

2)  I've changed it while ago from a normal Speed Run to an Omega Speed Run (it was one of my posts).

        A)  Because it would be much more impressive than a normal run

        B)  It would not include The End or Duel which would make everything anti climatic.  If they would be included, the run would be crap.

        C)  Not using these does not add a lot of time at all.  Maybe 5-10 minutes max.

3)  I understand that this is not a normal Speed Run.  But it it were, it would suck.

        A)  Because the normal run is too easy.

        B)  Because it would be boring, you pretty much do the exact same thing to the final boss as you do with anyone else.  It would be a very long and boring run.  We don't want that.

Please tell me as soon as you can.  Thanks.

EDIT:
4)  I think a lot of people would like to see this run.
MGS for PS1 forever.
Our 2nd goal is entertainment...our 1st goal is speed. So, if something can be done faster it should be done faster.
Yet it sounds like its either this or no run at all, and I know which Id prefer.

It also sounds like this way sacrifices only a small amount of speed for a huge boost in entertainment.  Whats the point in creating a slightly faster video, if a large amount of people are going to turn it off half way through?
MGS for PS1 forever.
Considering that the overall video is going to be more than 9 hours, 5-10 doesn't seem to matter much. So, you're saying that you are more willing to watch a 9+ hour video if 5-10 minutes of said video is more entertaining?

It's like saying you're more willing to watch a 3 hour LotR movie if there is an extra 2-3 minutes worth of footage. My opinion: whoop de do. Speed is the most important.
