BOOM!!!!!
you could skip some of the summons

Choco/Mog
Alexander
Neo Bahamut
Bahamut Zero
Typhoon
KOR

and any others that reiquire you to stray from your path.

use boss' to level up the only hard boss should be Demons Gate in the Temple

save before crossing the swamp because it is possible to do without a chocobo (i've only done it once mind you)

don't bother messing with the huge materias
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Well I'm about to go do it, since it'll take so long that its beyond the time limit on speed runs I dont think I'll record it. If the time is sub 10:30 or something I'll take a picture of the final save time. I did the game as fast as I could, I wasnt skipping too much and the goal was to beat the game including both ruby and emerald weapon. Time on the final save in that file was 18:03. This will be straight through no emmy or ruby.

1. I'll be doing it on ps2.
2. I'm not going to save every 5 seconds to avoid random encounters, infact I'm planning to save as little as possible to put more of a challenge in it.
3. I'm not going to fight random encounters, unlike what the guy on the last page said it's quite possible to beat the game at the levels you gain only from bosses.
4. Although it's not really possible to prove, I wont be cheating in any way (no gameshark or W-Item trick)

Wish me luck, I'm not going to put that much effort into it (I'll complete each section I do 3 times and take the best time unless it's a crazy boss that takes many tries) so whenever I actualy 1st start I plan on finishing it within a week.

As previously mentioned, Demon's Gate should be your biggest enemy because of your lack of levels. Maybe you should always have Aeris in your party to help her survive the falling rocks?

Note: Demon's Gate gave me absolutely no trouble the very first time I played the game, so I have no idea why people always harp on about him. Smiley In a speedrun though, I can see him being dangerous.

Good luck! Personally I think you SHOULD get Choco/Mog: although it is best vs. normal enemies, there are some bosses which can be Stopped via the summon's effect, if I remember rightly.
Glub glub.
Bottomswell is weak to Wind, too, if I remember correctly.
MGS for PS1 forever.
There was one time that I tried to go through the game with as few levels as possible...I did fight random fights though.

On Demon's Gate I just did limit breaks...he went down in one round.
BOOM!!!!!

i had some right trouble with him and the Red Dragon, i think i hadn't leveled up enough because i was just doing the story and not stopping to level up.

my first RPG what you expect?
Robin! Pull up your pants and get inthe Batmobile!
I'm going to set a goal for 9:00hrs, depending.  If I get any less than the person on the speed faq, I'll ask radix about the time and then, hopefully, send it too (sp?) Nate.  Any more tips would be appreciated, since i'm only starting my practice run tonight.

Wow....nine hours, if you make it around there, I'll watch it ((most of it anyway =P ))

Is there a way to skip shinra hq?  Or maybe part of it?

Mmm... wouldn't that be a dream? There are so many battles in Shinra HQ you can't skip, no matter which way you choose to go in. I'm not even sure which way is quicker. I'm leaning towards busting in.

And... yeah! Bottomswell. The only boss that ever killed me on my first time through. I lost to him, and beat Demon's Gate. Figure it out for yourself. 8)

I don't think I lost to any boss...I'm usually a level or two above what I should be though =P

I've decided to segment as much as the guy on the speed faq, because I'm going to try not to fight any random battles. I've already got the first save at 35 seconds off that guy, so it looks good so far.  I'll keep you guys updated.

p.s.  would that annoy anybody to have that many segments?  I like the runs better with smaller segments, because i don't like to see a four-hour downloading time with the lowest quality.

EDIT: these are my times for my practice run, as soon as I get some tapes I will start recording the real run.
BOOM!!!!!
the amount of segments doesn't bother me just keep in under 1,000,000,000,000 lol

as for the shira HQ you CAN miss some floors

E.G. the floor with the gym and the one with the computer
woodenwolf,
How did you shave 35 seconds off the first save?! I can barely get 6mins 48seconds on a really lucky day. Nice job on that. Good luck with the rest of your run.
Oh yeah, I prefer single segment runs so in my case I would rather see a smaller amount of segments to d/l so my viewing experience doesn't become too confusing. Smiley
BOOM!!!!!
Maybe Radix (or whoever uploads it) could tie some segments together so there's less to download?

yeah, but i played the segments 20/30 times on my first try, so i'm pretty good up until out of midgar.  my game timer is way off though, it says 7 mins. by the way, I'm moving in a week or so and then i have school and can only play on weekends, so it will take longer than I thought to get this done.

btw, i would love to do a ss on this game, but i can't find a big enough tape, so i'll have to get a video capture card.
Robin! Pull up your pants and get inthe Batmobile!
btw, 3nki, I got my first save down to 5:09 ;D. I can't seem to beat the second save yet, though, by more than a minute, which loses me 9 seconds from my first save time.  I think I'll just take that and hope to regain that in future segments.
Robin! Pull up your pants and get inthe Batmobile!
btw, the game clock is off, so I time myself.
BOOM!!!!!
how'd you know it's off?

I timed it against my stopwatch from exactly where the video started and at first chance you can open the menu screen the in-game clock said 2:26 and my stopwatch said 2:28, and the in-game clock steadily fell away from my stopwatch time.

my parents haven't payed me yet, I'm going to buy those tapes asap.  Got a really rugged practice run going, In wall market with all dress items collected at a time of 1 hr, approx.

btw, I'd like to get some feedback on times and not think I'm the only one on this topic.  I'm working on my run tonight (practice) and I'm constantly bugging my parents for tapes.
I'll still run this game... at a much later date. Speed running another game, going to school, and working part time is all I have time for right now. I'll stay on the sidelines, though, and cheer you on. You seem like you'll probably get a better time than I would anyways. Time will tell on that one.

Also, you might try actually messaging GarlandG over at GameFAQs to see what he thinks and maybe help each other out with speed running this game. When I start with my run I know that's who I plan to discuss this game with.

Oh yeah, great job on that 5:09 with the first save! I timed  my save as well and basically got the same time (NTSC Greatest Hits version) on the game clock as on my stopwatch so I don't know what's up with your PS or game copy... or my stopwatch might be messed up.

Doesn't it take longer to get all the costume items than to just fight that battle in the mansion? Seems like it to me. Smiley
give me your eyes!!!
Good luck on this if the time is under ten hours I will definitely watch it as it remains one of my favourite games of all time!!

Are your characters in the front or back, I found Demon's Gate very hard until I remembered you can move them.

Also which characters will you take preference with, I suppose Aeris as soon as possible for healing but after she dies it's going to get seriously hard if she had more experience than the others.

Well done all the same for the progress so far, look forward to it!
The GFAQ's guidewriters recommended you get Cloud picked as you save 10-11 seconds. Reason being is you skip the fights with Don Corneo's henchmen and having to collect Aeris/Tifa. I reckon you could shave maybe a couple more secs off his time though :). Check the guide on GAQS.com to see what items you need.
