Alright, as long as there is enough interest, I will be speedrunning this extremely difficult game.

So, I need some help deciding on skills for each character.  I think Yangus and Angelo are set with axes and swords, but I am not sure if Hero should use spears or if Jessica should use whips.  Is it overkill to have Hero using spears just to MS farm?

Again,  If I don't get enough support for this game, I probably will not waste time speedrunning it.

Should be some info here: http://speeddemosarchive.com/forum/index.php/topic,7682.0.html
If not, then it's 4 pages of nothing, which is possible.

Unfortunately there is nothing there except talks of a speedrun and which version would be better.  Since there is no competition out there and I don't have a PS2 or anything else that could even play the Japanese version, I will be sticking with the one that I have (US version).

It seems like a lot of people were interested at the time but I don't know about now...

I will keep rambling anyway, input would be greatly appreciated.

I was linked to a speedrun walkthrough of the game http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/ps2/file/583527/47888 and was reading through Farebury section.  I am not sure if it is worth gathering most of those materials just to sell to buy another Leather Shield.  Here is what I was thinking.

Segments (work in progress)
1)  opening scene -> enter Farebury -> head to chapel -> grab pot lid from back room -> save
2)  bar -> kalderasha -> cutscene outside w/ trode -> leather shield from well -> valentina/kalderasha house -> save
3)  outside -> inn (can I just sleep at the inn and avoid the whole scene at night?) -> seed of life (necessary?)  -> fight and level up to waterfall -> fight boss and evac -> kalderasha -> alexandria -> save

That's it for now, let me know what you think.  Will continue pending interest.

Waiting hurts my soul...
I'm sure plenty of people are interested in seeing a run. Language doesn't matter anyway, even though a run done on the J version would be faster just because of the text.

I suggest trying out different strategies to see what's faster yourself. If people chime in with what's worked for them even better, but most of the time you'll be on your own to try out strategies. There may be some things on UltimaGarden, but I don't know where else to point you to.

Good luck.

Browsing through that thread myself, there's some links and time info. Although it's for the J version, it's at least something to follow. There's even a video to watch, although it's 100%.
I noticed that video.  I might take a look at it to see what's best.  The only thing about it is that a lot of the stuff is just for 100% which makes it a little difficult to decide whether or not I actually need something.  There is also a pretty good video walkthrough on youtube that I found that has audio commentary.  I still do not know what skills I should use for Jessica or Hero though.
100% runs=great to watch
I'd surely enjoy watching a well wrought speedrun of DQVIII same as all other DQ games!  Best of luck and go for it!  8)

I am doing a rough run through right now after beating Geyzer I am at 0:59 with 3 segments.  These segments are not very polished, a few mistakes, and something I am not sure about yet.

I think getting the seed of life is a waste of time.  When I added it to Hero it gave him 4 hp and it did not change the battle against Geyzer so I think it is worth skipping.

I have a question though for others out there.  I am playing this on the PS3 at the moment (I wont when I actually start recording) and I "paused" the game by pressing the PS button and leaving it on that menu.  Does anyone know if this still makes the in game clock timer continue?  IF it does, then the time would more or less be around 0:45 which is WAY ahead of what I am reading.

Edit: I also spent about 3 or 4 minutes accidentally saying "No" to Geyzer and the guy that is blocking the door when I needed to say "Yes" which is something that is REALLY annoying to get used to.  Spamming triangle isn't always best I suppose haha.

Edit 2: Would this game be timed by the in-game timer?  I just noticed that when you create a new file it saves the game and the screen says 0:00 before you even actually start the game.

First segment and second segments

I know it's not much but let me know what you think.  Give me some support so I continue to do this!

Edit2:

Segment 3 will be about 45 minutes long maybe even push 60.

I have a question for anyone that has played this game.  After I beat Geyzer and I evac out of the cave, there is a special monster just to the left near the tree when you exit.  Do you think it would be worth the extra experience and monster coin to fight this?  I am pretty sure I could beat it as long as I still have some leftover herbs.

I have actually beaten the game and went through the speed run faq til the part with the metal king slimes.  I would say that killing the extra monster outside the geyser cave is definitely worth it, as money is a very rare commodity early game.  Obviously you are following the guide, so go with that, as it was pretty straight forward to me.  I almost went insane trying to manipulate those metal slime fights, have a good time with that :).

As for the run so far, I wouldn't have split the two segments, as you didn't really have to DO anything yet, I think the first segment should last until after Geyser, but its your run.  Try to take advantage of all the loot around the map early game when leveling, as you need to buy some pricey stuff later on for Yangus.

I will be posting the 3rd segment here shortly, its uploading to youtube.  As for combining all 3 segments together...I think there will just be too many mistakes all the way up to that point.  And if something goes bad, you have to sit through all the cutscenes again.

I also tried doing a rough runthrough following the guide and I was at 0:59 after beating Geyzer which is on par with the speed guide.  Right now I am at 0:50 and I am in town and have already taken the crystal ball back to Kal.

As for skills for each character, do you have any suggestions?  I cant decide between whips and TDL or Magic Burst.

Edit:

Here is the 3rd segment:

part 1:
part 2:
part 3:
part 4:

Some parts could have been better but overall I think it went really well... I am pleased with 0:50 at this point in time, and do not think I will have any problem getting to the Port by 1:45
I definitely think that you should go whips as twin dragon lash is a power hitter early game.  I think that yangus needs to level axe to get the executioner move so you can farm metal slimes, but I also think you need to get the random encounter stopping ability in humanity (or friendship I don't remember).
Okay, I will jump out of the blue and say this with pride:  I am interested in seeing a speedrun of this game, even if it's single-segment!
I am working on it.  Working on redoing segment 3.  Plan on doing the cheese quest since you don't really lose that much time and the boomerang is essential.
Here is an updated version of segment 3.  It is 6 minutes slower, but I will be a lot better off in the long run because of the choices that were made (I have money and the boomerang this time).

part 1:
part 2:
part 3:
part 4:
part 5:
Can anyone attempt to translate this?

Two. Fake skill
Hero: 12 → Isamu 82 → spear spear 25 → Isamu 90 → spear 100 → Sword 9 (→ case 11)
Yangus: Rating 7 → ax 6 → People 4 → rated 33 → ax 66 → Rated 42 → ax 100 (→ People 82.)
Jessica: 9 → cane sword 3 → whip 23 → Brace 57 → Rated 100 → wand 100 (4 single dose)
Kukuru: 13 Cane 65 → power (single dose 2) → 100 → power sword 27 (single dose 3)

I think I have Hero and Yangus figured out, but Jessica and Kukuru (Angelo) have me baffled.
I'm in your FF save, spanking Yuffie.
OK. I was the guy who started the other thread - and got distracted by many things, including my SNES Shadowrun speedrun.

Isamu is Courage. Basically, his plan is Spears to 12 for Thunder Thrust (to try and kill Metals), then Courage all the way for Omniheal before facing Dhoulmagus, then Multithrust after - you can get Omniheal before Angelo learns Multiheal, and you NEED some sort of multi-healing power before facing Dhoulmagus. Not only that, Courage gives you Holy Protection, and if you level up to 30ish on Metal Babbles before chasing Dhoulmagus down Holy Protection will make you just about immune to random encounters.

Yangus: Axes for Helm Splitter, Humanity for Whistle, Axes for Hatchet Man, Fisticuffs for Padfoot. Those are the vital skills, especially Hatchet Man and Whistle - though I'd probably raise Fisticuffs to get Thin Air after that, since Thin Air can lay waste to entire mobs in a single blow.

The only skill that matters for Jessica is Accelleratle and Twin Dragon Lash (Staves to 3 and Whips to 23), so I was thinking Sex Appeal after that for the occasional charm. So did he in his plan.

For Angelo, RAISE STAVES. The only - ONLY - thing he needs is Oomph, so you can cast Acceleratle with Jessica and cast Oomph on her in the first turn. After that I was going to raise up for Sarcastic Snigger, then I was considering Bows for Needle Shot in the hopes of killing Metal King Slimes, but I never experimented to see if that works on them.

The last thing you'd want to think of before following the dude's plan to the letter is if you want to only beat the game, or go smack down the Lord of Dragovians - the last is what he did, which is why he wastes (ha!) time chasing down components for a Timbrel of Tension, and walking time to brew it; though if I read right he actually brewed it up while walking through the final dungeon area.

If you just want to beat the game, you hardly need some of the items he got, or to spend much time in the second Casino; in fact, the problem that you run into once you get the Godbird Stone is not enough time to brew anything!

Anyway, next post I'll cut and paste my segment plan.
I'm in your FF save, spanking Yuffie.
My plan was (ahem):

Quote:
Loot Farebury, get the Seed of Life right outside of town, level to 3, sleep at the inn, finish Geyzer, walk to Alexandria, go into Jessica's house, save.

Go through the Alexandrian Tower, go to Port Prospect, get to level 9, save.

Finish off Kalamari, save at Peregrine Quay.

Go to Simpleton, save at Maella Abbey after getting the location of the Ruined Abbey.

Go through the Ruined Abbey, save at the Riverside Chapel.

Hunt Metal Slimes until Hero is 16-18, depending on what level Holy Water/Protection will skip over encounters while doing the overworld walk to the Swordsman's Labyrinth. Only problem is that I CANNOT stay the night at the Riverside Chapel to restore my MP for Thunder Thrust and Hatchet Man (because of Angelo's flashback), meaning I have to Zoom to Peregrine Quay to heal. *shrug* Like I would have wanted to walk there anyway...

(The thing it, time spent leveling is made up for by not having to deal with random encounters thanks to Holy Protection; up to a certain point. I'll probably just try to discover the ideal level to avoid encounters all the way through the Labyrinth, as I said, then just deal with random encounters until I hit the metal slimes in Trodain).

After I finish leveling, I go to Ascantha/Wisher's Peak. I probably won't save again until after Medea gets stolen.

I'll spend a little bit of time in the Casino trying to get 10 Magic Waters and a couple of Agility Rings; not only for the Hero and Yangus to wear but to make a Mercury's Bandanna for the Hero. All I'll need is one x50 win to achieve all my goals, which is theoretically possible in one go. Heck, I may just cast Acceleratle in most fights simply to save the time. All I NEED are some Magic Waters, for the Dhoulmagus fight.

Then the Swordsman's Labyrinth and I save at the Hilltop Hut.

After I get to Trodain comes the SERIOUS pain of leveling: I need to get the Hero to level 29 so he can learn Omniheal for the Dhoulmagus fight, the earliest possible level he can build his Courage that high. The Cheiron's Bow takes too long to synth, requires too many item pick-ups, and just plain cures too little for it to help the way I need it to. Fighting Dhoulmagus without a multi-curing spell takes way too long, is too risky, and anyway being at that level will let me skip EVERY random encounter until I hit the Dark Ruins. I'll need 12 Metal Babbles.

Then I kill the Mole King, get the ship, sail east until I hit Baccarat, listen to the conversation in the Inn where you hear Golding died, go get Baumren's Bell (the earlier I get it, the more time i save using it), then hit up the Dark Ruins because otherwise you can't ask about the mirror in Argonia. Warp to Hilltop Hut and save.

Warp to Baccarat, ride the tiger to Argonia, do that quest, ride the tiger to the Mystical Spring (otherwise the Dragon won't appear; you don't have to talk to the guy in his house but you DO have to see the princess get transformed), warp to Hilltop Hut and save.

Warp to Baccarat, charge up the mirror, warp to Dark Ruins, take out Dhoulmagus, warp to Hilltop Hut, save.

Warp to Argonia, ride to Arcadia, get the Stone Sword, climb up Rylus's Tower, warp to Hilltop Hut, save.

Get Jessica back, warp to Baccarat, open up the Dragon's Graveyard, start my second leveling segment. I'll have to move on to see what level is necessary for Holy Protection to work in the Black Citadel, if it can that is.

So far, that's about how my run is going to be planned. My game is taking a LOT longer because I'm enjoying the dialogue, but that's the plan.

And yeah, I'm still planning to do DQ8 after I finish my Shadowrun speedrun - I found out two nights ago that I have to REDO IT FOR A FOURTH TIME because I messed up segment 11, where I'm supposed to learn the DOCKS word to use in segment 14, and I CAN'T GO BACK because the SNES Shadowrun only has TWO saveslots - but hey, competition always is good!

I'm in your FF save, spanking Yuffie.
Wow, the Hero only has to be level 26 before learning Thunder Thrust AND Omniheal if you pump all his points after Thunder Thrust into Courage - that ain't bad at all. I wonder who I was looking at to mis-add the numbers and say that I had to have him at level 30?

Anyway, that's only 6 Metal Babbles needed, with a mere 88k experience necessary. Possibly only 5, since there's some mandatory fights between you and Dhoulmagus.

On the other hand, it could be that I was looking at Angelo's necessary points to learn Oomph, which he can get (conceivably) at level 28 and 137k exp; that would put the Hero at level 29 with plenty more skill points to pick up Multithrust AND the 50% spell reduction cost ability of Courage +90.

And I just realized another bennie of getting all those Magic Waters - it means I don't have to sleep at inns to restore MP, and I can skip Medea's midnight ramblin's. Score!
If you have not tried to speedrun DQ8 yet I can already tell you that you will want to save at an inn before you get to Alexandria.  Doing all that work only to lose to a bad roll on Geyzer is very frustrating and then having to watch the opening intro again? Ugh.
I'm in your FF save, spanking Yuffie.
Yeah, in my practice run I failed like 3-4 times on Geyzer before succeeding, but that ain't so bad in the long run tbh. Remember, it ain't time spent playing the game that counts, it's time on the clock. I spent all day Wednesday with my Shadowrun cart for about one hour or so of successful segments - then I found out I failed.

The problem with saving in DQ8 is how much time it takes, even once you get access to the Hilltop Hut; Farebury's church is cursedly inconvenient. At least Alexandria's church is right on the way to Jessica's house. I feel envy of the Tales of Phantasia runners, where you can save any time you're not in a dungeon and it takes like 10 seconds. <_<

But hey, that's why Dragon Quest is hardcore, baby!

Remember, too, that we're not trying to match that dude's time, we're trying to crush it; and it's quite possible because his planning is all messed up. Jessica does WAY more damage with Twin Dragon Lash then Angelo can with his sword skills, so getting Angelo Oomph is top priority.

AfReN: 2009-10-10 11:59:42 am
I understand about saving, but is it really THAT inconvenient to save after the scene in Kalderasha's house?  It's like, right there and the pot lid actually helps Yangus out a bit too.  On my old segments that are still on youtube I beat his time to the Port by 7 minutes.  And these have mistakes in them and are not the route I will be currently taking.

Edit:  I just redid my first two segments and shaved off about 9 minutes... I will be uploading them to youtube soon.  If you are interested, once uploaded they will be at http://www.youtube.com/user/AnemBrawl

Edit 2:  I think the seed of defense is more valuable then the seed of health.  In my run I am choosing the seed of defense for two reasons. 1) It is faster to get to and 2) it gives more overall benefit then the 4 extra health does.  Once you get to level 3, all damage is reduced by 1 point, for the rest of the game.  This is especially a big help until you get to the first MS farming part.  Getting the defense seed also gives you a chance to equip your shields (if you got the pot lid like I did in the church) before going out into the battlefield where you are going to take extra damage because you haven't equipped them yet.
Just an update:  I now have a save file right before fighting Khalimari at 1:20.  Nearly identical to the Japanese time.
Yes, a worthless avatar riding my posts.
I'm interested in seeing this run.

Regarding the vagueness of "level to 3", here's a suggestion: zerg rush into the cave, get the Copper Sword from the chest, then die or warp out somehow? I think it's a copper sword, it's been nearly a year since I played this game.

Also boomerangs do the most total damage in fights, generally, but they're no help against bosses. If you think you can get away from staying out of every random encounter then considering boomerangs won't matter.
Khalimari fight is uploaded.  Saved at PQ at 1:36.  If you can't appreciate doing the Khalimari fight at level 8 and having to luck manipulate that fight like I did I don't think anything I do will make you guys happy XD
We are very difficult to please Smiley
But seriously you should have helm splitter and the stone axe, that should make the fight much more manageable.
