Great, well done Cfox!
F*ckin' sanity effects...
OMG!  cfox7, I really enjoyed your 7:14 SS when it hit the site, and I'm really looking forward to watching whatever you deem as a worthy final effort (at least until more crazy minute-saving tricks are found).

Huge props for continuing attempts in the 7-hour range over such a long period of time!

Key 2 route uses two extremely difficult tricks to get to Helm early; therefore it's probably not feasible at all.

EDIT: Both routes are obsolete now that Helm Early with DK has been found.
Yes, a cucco riding the ground.
I still think it's possible to get to the Helm lobby early with DK alone, which would let us beat the game with only keys 3 and 8. The trick would be similar to reaching the Aztec lobby with a ceilingkick, but much harder.
How do you beat the final boss sequence without all the Kongs? (Is there some way to use the final boss itself to unlock them, die, then backtrack to buy the moves you need?)
K rool works similar to King Kutout in Castle, it forces certain character out so if you exit the fight with the kong out you can enter a Tag barrel and it will "unlock" them

Key 5 route confirmed to work. I fixed the Castle part and replaced the Forest Early ceilingkick method with the boulder method.

Advantages of using key 5 route:
  • You don't need to hit the warp pads in Aztec.
  • Getting to Helm lobby and skipping B. Locker is much faster and easier.

Advantages of using key 2 route:
  • The boss fight in Aztec is faster than the one in Forest. Also you don't need to go to Forest in the first place.

I'm not sure which one is faster for unlocking Diddy and Tiny and buying their moves. It takes a while to walk up to the Troff & Scoff portal and Cranky in Castle, but so does going to Aztec again and completing DK's round twice. You wouldn't see the K. Rool cutscene twice though.
Hey everyone. Great stuff going on here. And nice runs cfox7. I just created an account here because I think that I possibly might have discovered a huge time saver for donkey kong 64 any percent. I watched cfox7's AGDQ run last night and decided today to try some of the tricks. I did a few easy clips and banana fairy early and then I decided to try the funky weapons glitch.

I was following the instructions on dkspeedruns and I couldn't get it to work exactly. Every time a went to the title screen where the dk rap was supposed to play I just got stuck in the opening cutscene with K. Rool's boat. I eventually decided to let this play through in order to see what would happen at the end. Instead of sending me to the title screen it let me take control of dk after the cutscene without even selecting a file. (This may have been found before. I didn't check all 84 pages on this thread)

Anyway I went to cranky like the route goes and instead of giving me the practice barrels he asks me if I want to play the jetpak game. I was very surprised  by this and wondered what else had happened. Well after looking around all of the levels are open. I talk to snide and he tells me that I have found all the blueprints. I can't take any damage and the start button doesn't work. All coins and bananas (not golden bananas) are in the levels but all of the dirt patches are gone. Also all banana ports are already working. I have all of the kongs. and either diddy or tiny has all abilities, weapons and instruments. the others have nothing, not even simian slam. I walk around the island and find the ship to the final battle on the beach and I can start the fight now.

I did this multiple times today and eventually figured out how to beat the game this way. I need tiny's bow and getting here small barrel powerup is very helpful. I need lanky's trombone. and I need to get simian slam and hunky chunky for chunky. You can get all of these really fast. I go to angry aztec and get coins for tiny and lanky and buy her bow and lanky's trombone. For tiny I get the coins under the tag barrel and in the first tunnel (already unlocked of course) I take tiny to funky's (banana port 4) and buy the bow. I then take banana port 3 to cranky's and get lanky's coins there and buy tiny's power up. I take lanky to funky's for the coins then head out of the level ( the long way since start doesn't work) I reenter the level and all coins are back were they were. I get the same coins for lanky and buy all power ups that I can. I do this for the super simian slam for chunky's final boss fight. I then just new to get lanky's trombone and leave the level.

I now only need hunky chunky for chunky and then I can fight the final boss. I can get the first 3 coins in Jungle Japes (there is probably a faster route I only found this out today) and buy his power up. This doesn't take too long since the ports are open. Now I go to the ship and fight K. Rool. Assuming diddy was the one that got all of his powers at the beginning (I always check for this and don't know why it happens) I have everything I need to fight the boss. I have ran through this twice now and I am sure if this is well executed the time is way less than the current record. I am working on recording this and I am not sure why any of this happens. All I can say is it just did and I can repeat it consistently.

Sorry for the long post but I was excited that I might have found something new. I love all the work that y'all do on this game and this site so I'm happy to contribute.

PS I had a 101% file on file 1 and did this on file 3. I don't know if this affects it but it might.

let me know if you have any questions
thanks
Whow  Shocked I can't wait to see the video of this trick
I'm working on it. As a side note sometimes chunky has all of his moves too. I'm going to stick with diddy though because it seems the most common
Correction I need to get primate punch as well. And btw I posted that last comment at the start of a run and just ended because chunky couldn't finish the fight. This run is going to be fast.

Stuff like this has been reported before - it is because of your 101% file. Data starts flying around with Funky's Weapon Glitch...unless you can do something with 3 empty files before you start, it is meaningless. What it sounds like you did is actually a variant of the trick to get -124% (telltale signs: everything completed but objects put back in their places and moves deleted), which is well-documented. Invincibility is also a pretty common side-effect of messing up stuff with the intro story glitch.
So does this not count as a run then? Since you said it is well documented I would assume somebody has tried this.

It doesn't count as a run since it is just using data from a saved file and passing it off as a brand new file. If it involved unlockables on the cart, then it might qualify for a New Game +, but using saved progress is a different story.

This channel has a lot of useful information: http://www.youtube.com/user/IntroStoryGlitch
Ok thanks I was kind of worried about that. It is still fun to mess around with though. Do you know what happens if you have no other files?

Well first of all, you messed up the Funky Weapons Glitch because you didn't go through the steps explained on DKSpeedruns quickly enough. Since it's a site for speedrunners, you'll actually want to do this trick as fast as possible. I believe you have to get back to the main menu within like 50 seconds after starting the Intro Story glitch.

The stuff that happened to you instead was getting into the tree house while still in the menu mode. This explains why the Start button is disabled (you won't want to pause in the main menu) and you always have full health (that's supposed to fill up your health after quitting Adventure and before starting a file again). All the things you've discovered while walking around are indicators that your 101% file had been loaded before the Intro Story showed up. Also I'm willing to bet you had less than 201 Golden Bananas because once you see a demo, it changes the stats of the kong featured in it (like it gives him certain moves, but deletes his bananas). The colored bananas and coins are always there in menu mode, no matter if you previously collected them in your 101% or not. You can even exit and reenter a level and they will be there again.

This video shows the trick that you stumbled upon. The results are not in the video, but explained in the description.

If you try doing the trick with 3 empty files, you'll just appear to start a new file, but (probably) with some unlocked moves for some kongs. It's still much slower than FWG since you have to watch the Intro Story sequence and you can't save and reset, which is done twice in Any% RTA runs.

By the way, the FWG page on DKSpeedruns is a bit outdated. Here's an updated and more informative explanation.
That's sounds about right. I probably was way too slow. My file does have 201 bananas but the one that loaded had zero. I assume that that was because I started a file between the intro glitch and the cutscene loading. The demo was always diddy and he had all of his stuff. Everyone else had nothing. I guess I'll try FWG again later.

Thanks.

I'm learning the game in any% FWG allowed category, and I would like to know if there was people interested about racing it on SRL?
Hey guys, been a while (years?).  Don't know if this is any relevant at this point, but I recently started playing dk64 again (finally beat it normally for the first time ever) and I found a somewhat easier way to get behind that door in Aztec (well, easier compared to my original method).  No corners this time, and can be done with DK.  It does, however, require simian slam.

You'll need to use one of those half-vertical, half-slanted walls commonly found in the first open area of aztec (with candy and the ice temple).  I've gotten it to work on all of them, but I've definitely had the most success on the one parallel to the back of the ice temple. Once you reach your wall take a look at it.  You should notice a fine (yet visible) line separating the vertical portion from the slanted portion.  That line is your target.  Face the wall and use the r button as needed to keep the camera viewing forward.  Push and hold the joystick forward to run directly into the wall itself.  You will be holding the joystick forward for this ENTIRE glitch, so do not let go of it.  Crouch and preform a high jump (Z+A, while normally still).  You may need to wait a split second so the game registers you as "standing still", even though you're holding the josytick forward.  DK may turn a bit in midair and the camera may spazz slightly, this is ok.  What you want to do is time a simian slam when DK is directly over that line.  This will normally occur a split second before DK would land on the slanted wall, which is what happens if you slam too late.  Anyway, assuming success, you will slam right into in the void (no walking through walls), and can proceed as the original method.

While this is slightly inconsistent, there is virtually no setup requried of this glitch, so you can rapid fire through fail attempts.  I am currently working on a way to make this more consistent.  The good news is unlike the other method, I found my success rate to be higher than my fail rate (if tat means anything).  Also, since the only setup required is you literally running into a wall, you can easily rapid fire  multiple attempts at this glitch.  I've even gotten through a couple of times just by spamming high jump + slam.

Hope this is useful.
hey guys, can someone describe the fastest boss strats? thanks.
Yes, a cucco riding the ground.
They're described on this page.
wow that site is a lot better than the one i was using before. seems like a lot of stuff on the other site is copied from that one. thanks for answering.

Yes, the two other DK64 sites I'm aware of both have plagiarized content from the SDA Strategy Wiki. I'm not sure what they're trying to accomplish, but it's a shame that they think stealing other people's work is the way to do it.
Me, Znernicus, Bismuth, and RingRush found a way to get to the end of the Aztec Beetle Race in a pretty amazing way. Doesn't save a whole lot about 30 seconds if done extremely well but very cool. The GB is always loaded so you can pick it up without triggering the race starting so you run the entire time and Z slide down. Fastest method we have found yet.
