Fan of older games.
There have been many threads of this game in the past - I didn't want to bump any of them since I wasn't sure what the rules on that were.

Either way, it's been a while since I posted here. I originally was planning on doing a Croc : Legend of the Gobbos speedrun, but I got sidetracked by Mario Kart Wii Time Trials for quite some time. I still have this game, and still have intentions of playing it in the future - but I stumbled across Crash Bandicoot 1 again recently, and I too wondered why there isn't a speedrun of it yet. I hunted the forum, and read a few past threads about it.

After playing it to get the 100% complete, I understand why now. The game is ridiculous in difficulty to finish. XD

There are 32 levels, 2 keys and 26 gems.

To acquire a gem, you must break every box in the level. Everytime you die, all boxes in the level are restored. This would mean that to get the gem and 100% in this game, you wouldn't be able to die once, except on bosses (which I would avoid doing for show purposes - the bosses in this game are easy, anyhow)

The 2 keys are obtained by completing the two Cortex bonus levels. These keys unlock two secret levels which each hold a clear gem.

The Great Hall has an alternative path which you need all 26 gems for (Only 20 are used on the path, but 6 coloured gems are needed to get all 20 clear gems) and taking it allows you to skip the final Cortex boss fight and view a secret ending. However, I think just taking the normal route and doing the Cortex battle would be less time consuming, and may still give the 100% (I got the 100% mark on my game save before even taking this route and watching the secret ending)

I also propose single segement for 2 reasons.
1) The save points in this game are disgusting and totally screwed (only after clearing bonus stages and collecting gems/keys if I recall correctly)
2) It would be unbelieveably satisfying to complete it all in one segment. The game is definitely way shorter than Cortex Strikes Back or Warped, so it's definitely not a long shot. It would also be a great watch and would definitely make the game more challenging.

I have a DVD Recorder and I have DVD-R discs to record onto. I have yet to perform a quality test but I'm hoping the quality of my device would be acceptable. It's a Toshiba RD-88DT, just for reference.

So, what are peoples ideas on this? I'm slightly bored of MKWii Time Trials for now and this game is very challenging and quite addictive. I'm always up for a challenge. If people think Single Segment is too extreme, or 100% is unnecessary, then please express so. I'm open to ideas.

I'm gonna post what coloured gems are needed for what (to 100% you would need to backtrack to earlier levels to get the hidden boxes on secret coloured gem routes) for my own reference soon.

The Great Gate - Yellow Gem is needed to obtain access to a secret area behind the regular warp exit.
Boulders - Gem is available. 2/26
Upstream - Orange Gem is needed to obtain a hidden box underneath a waterfall, plus access to a route that goes beyond the regular warp exit.
Papu Papu - No Gem available (Boss Battle)
Rolling Stones - Blue Gem is needed to access a secret hidden area inside one of the pits that contains extra boxes.
Hog Wild - Gem is available. 3/26
Native Fortress - Red Gem is needed to gain access to a secret route among the clouds that has hidden boxes.

Island 2

Up the Creek - Gem is available. 4/26
Ripper Roo - No Gem available (Boss Battle)
The Lost City - Gem is available. 5/26
Temple Ruins - Gem is available. 6/26
Road to Nowhere - Red Gem is needed to gain access to a secret route with hidden boxes and to be able to give access to a route with more boxes behind the regular warp exit.
Boulder Dash - Purple Gem is needed to gain access to an underground cave in one of the pits that has hidden boxes.
Whole Hog - Key is needed from Cortex Bonus from "Sunset Vista" to unlock this level. Gem is available. 7/26
Sunset Vista - Gem is available. 8/26
Koala Kong - No Gem available (Boss Battle)

Island 3

Heavy Machinery - Gem is available. 9/26
Cortex Power - Blue Gem is needed to access various parts of the level that have boxes.

The High Road - Gem is available. 12/26
Slippery Climb - Gem is available. 13/26
Lights Out - Yellow Gem is needed to gain access to a secret route on the roof that has 3 boxes.
Fumbling In The Dark - Key is needed from Cortex Bonus from "Jaws of Darkness" to unlock this level. Gem is available. 14/26
Jaws of Darkness - Blue Gem is needed to gain access to a secret route with hidden boxes.
Castle Machinery - Gem is available. 15/26
Nitrus Brio - No Gem available (Boss Battle)
The Lab - Gem is available. 16/26
The Great Hall - No Gem available (Special Level)
Dr. Neo Cortex - No Gem available (Final Boss Battle)

For all levels where the gem is unobtainable without assistance of a coloured gem (10 levels in total that fall under this category) falling down a pit that is relatively close to a checkpoint box may be the best option to avoid the screen after the level showing every box that you missed on the first play through. I've tested it out on the earlier levels and it definitely seems to work.

I would probably go to "The Lab" without backtracking, then go all the way back to "Jungle Rollers" on the first Island and work my way onwards. Would probably do "Whole Hog" and "Fumbling In The Dark" (the 2 unlockable levels with achieveable gems) along the way too, instead of going backwards to do them while working torwards getting to Cortex.
Nice to see a new person attempt this game, all previous have given up. The quickest way of moving is game is spin-jumping,
There does exist a couple of "colored gem skips" which should aid you,
Jungle Rollers, getting all boxes without the gem: (This one is quite hard but with enough practice you should be able to pull it off fairly often, also it's early in the game)
Here is also a rejected TAS (it didn't use the best movement method and had some tiny errors) of the game, it may contain other helpful tips and tricks that will help you: http://www.megavideo.com/?d=D04YI6CD
The TAS completed the game in 1h 17m and 20s (Measured from Power On).

I wish you good luck! You will need that, I am certain.
Darn it. Forgot to mention that when having the mask-powerup regular running is faster than spin-jumping.
Wow, CB1 100% single segment? That's quite a challenge man. I found this game incredibly difficult and had trouble finishing it even with saving and without speedrunning. Actually, I think this is probably the hardest game I ever completed 100%. I would definitely love to see this but in all honesty, I don't even think it's possible to finish this game without dying. If you manage to pull this off I salute you sir. Good luck.
Fan of older games.
Alrighty, I just played the game again from start to finish ( 0% → 100% ), took about 6 or 7 hours or so. Mainly because I was experimenting strats, playing around with death abuse, seeing if I could find any sequence breaks, etc.

Thank you Warepire for the helpful TAS video! I watched the entire thing start to end. It's odd that alot of the strats I was playing around with before having saw that came into play there. Some levels our strategies are identical. I'm surprised it got rejected ... guess the standard for TAS is ridiculously high? I could see some marginal errors at some spots but overall it was very clean.

Also, thank you for the link on Jungle Rollers. Just practiced it now for about an hour and I've already gotten it twice. Will definitely be able to pull it off in a run for sure now happy

I do have a question. Watching the TAS, I was amazed particularly at the warp exit skip at 4:14 (start from 4:04, it's the closest it'll let you get). It would save a good 3 to 4 minutes being able to do this humanly, since it would mean that the level wouldn't have to be played again once acquiring the yellow gem in "The Lab", but I've tried for over an hour now and I haven't had any success at making this glitchy skip. Even when barely any of my Crash lands on the very edge of it, the warp still registers. Has any human ever actually done this? Since it's on the third level it seems like something I would be willing to try to get, but if it's literally one pixel timing then maybe the odds of me ever getting it are slim and it would prevent me from ever finishing a run.

And don't worry - I know that Crash moves at his fastest pace during the third transformation of the Aku-Aku mask, definitely something I'd want to abuse if possible and will try my best to do so Smiley

At Silmaranza, I know it's very challenging Tongue But the game itself isn't actually that exciting to watch though, and I think breaking it up into segments makes it way too easy. The game is still very difficult since it's mainly precision jumping with a d-pad. And it's one of the hardest games I've ever gotten 100% on aswell. I do think making it to the end without any deaths in one go is a possible feat, but more than likely I'll be using some death abuse to avoid long cutscenes after finishing the level showing all the boxes I missed. If you exclude those though, then I can guarantee it's possible!

My goal would be to finish a run in under an hour and a half, only dying when intended (so specifically for death abuse only). Sounds very hard, but that's the beauty of it!

I appreciate the support guys! I'll need it, haha. I'm gonna work on doing 100% one more time (hopefully hone it in under 3 hours this time) then I'll record the first level with my DVD Recorder and upload a quality test. If I get the thumbs up, then I'll work on the full speedrun.
TAS means Tool-Assisted Speedrun/Superplay, this means that tools are used to remove human error, the rejected TAS got rejected for not using the optimal moving method and missing some minor details. Then that Jungle Rollers trick was discovered and the user started to make the TAS again.
I guess that Yellow Gem-Box Gem skip needs pixel-perfect precision or there might be a bug in the emulator, try to see if you find any regular play videos pulling that trick off on youtube, if not perhaps it can be written off as a TAS-only trick. (Tricks so hard no man can replicate them in real time).
Fan of older games.
I tried it for a good 3 to 4 hours over the weekend, and still absolutely no luck pulling it off. Is there any way to contact the TASer and ask what he thinks of it? How many re-records he had to do, whether he's done it on the actual game itself, etc. I'm honestly doubting it's possible, but if it is, the chances of getting it are ridiculously slim. I don't think humans can pull it off, sadly.

I searched all over Youtube and I could only find people doing that level using the Yellow Gem from " The Lab" ... noone performed that glitchy skip from what I could find. :\

It's a shame, I would have really liked to have used this in a run ... but I think it might be borderline impossible ... I also want to do it so that if it's later discovered it is humanly possible, my entire run will be written off as void for the fact that I could easily cut off a good 3 to 4 minutes from that alone. Ugh.

Either way, I've recorded me playing N.Sanity Beach (not fastest possible, I did make some mistakes but I also let some things run to test quality - like the animation on the beach at the start, I didn't skip it for example)

I'll work on extracting it to a disc and uploading it and if I get the thumbs up then I'll start working on the full run.
The TASers nickname is turbofa. You can try to PM him over at www.tasvideos.org about that trick, he is Italian.
I'll definitely follow your progress on this run. Good luck.

Definitely following, as well.  Sooner or later hopefully Trihex will see this thread and give you some help.

@Warepire; Thank you. I will make an account over there and ask him about his TAS tomorrow.

@Ace; I appreciate the support, thank you!

@InsipidMuckyWater; I'm glad to hear it! And I have watched both of Trihex's Crash Bandicoot 2 / Crash Bandicoot 3 runs ... they are really breathtaking. Its been about a year since I saw them though, might have to watch them again.

I don't know whether Trihex has played this game - this one doesn't have the same mechanics engine, whereas 2 and 3 do (albeit much better ones) so I'm not sure if he has any input. I would absolutely love to hear any advice he could give - he truely is the Crash Bandicoot expert here.

I played from scratch tonight, hoping for a rough 100% complete, some things I need to point out from my playing -

Jungle Rollers Green Gem Skip is actually much easier now. I can get up there and get the boxes 90% of the time - the furthest box to the left is easily missed sometimes, I'll work on it.
Upstream is an awful level. The amount of time I am forced to waste here waiting for those annoying leaf rafts that take their sweet time.
The Native Fortress is also awful because I am forced to wait for the burning platforms to extinguish, and there are several in a row in a few spots. Irritating.

I want to strangle whoever made The Lost City and Sunset Vista. The worst two levels in the game by a country mile. So much slow, boring, pointless sections that FORCE YOU TO WAIT FOR SO LONG. I've tried jumping around the stone pillars that come out and I get blocked by some invisible wall, and end up dying everytime. The wall sections are horrible and slow, too. And don't get me started about the bats ...

For The Lost City, I did find something. There is an Aku Mask right at the beginning of the level. If I collect it and leave immediately, I still have the mask upon re-entering the level. If I do it twice, on my third entrance, I could get the mask again for the invincible version. It would allow me to run through all of the bats and run at fastest pace possible. It's probably slower, because of all the loading times you have to endure, but it'd be neat if it were allowed. I could also run into the bats at other places with my remaining two masks which I wouldn't be able to do before.

Sunset Vista is plain awful and I want it to die. I've found a few timesavers that the TAS doesn't do, and abusing the invincible mask at the end of the level is a must.

For Heavy Machinery I also found another timesaver over the TAS, and completely on accident Grin You can also move yourself at a certain angle along the sides so you can jump around enemies and such and hit boxes from the front view. The end of the level has platforms that force you to wait, but not nearly as long.

I died on Generator Room, and since I wasn't saving, it took me back to N.Sanity Beach. Sadly, I underestimated the hitboxes of the moving cameras, and the duration of the spin attack. However, this level is fairly easy, so it shouldn't be much problem in the future once I get the hang of it.

I've been practicing TNT Smashing (exploding them by spinning them and not getting affected) and I can do it consistently on quite a few levels. I need to practice jumping on the sides of the burning dishes in the levels such as Temple Ruins and Jaws of Darkness, would help me cut huge time. Hopefully, it is also possible, and not just a TAS manoveur.

I also played Slippery Climb and spinning to cancel out the death affect on the spikes below the platforms is incredibly easy, so that should eliminate alot of waiting time.

Overall I'm getting better at the beggining of the game - I just need to practice the worst 2 levels a bit and see if I can make a strat that works 100% of the time for them. Bosses are easy to deal with (not quite sure they gave a level 2 Aku mask for each boss ... it completely removed the challenge out of Ripper Roo Roll Eyes ) and I'm fairly confident on the later levels.

I also used Anri-chan to upload a MKW video, and I've recorded my Crash footage onto the DVD. I should have a quality test up soon.
Wiiaboo
Good luck on this! Really looking forward to what you can do with this, and you seem to be off to a great start.
That's some awesome progress, great work.

Made a new account since I couldn't find a way to change the username. Hated the underscores in my name, so I'll just use my shortened version instead.

@Kiyura ; Thank you! I'll try my best to hopefully post some samples and such when I get into it.

@Warepire ; Thank you as always Smiley

I played again from scratch expecting a 100% complete so I could give you a rough idea of my current running pace. I timed myself using the time ...

- Pressed "Start Game" at 9:03PM
- Finished First Island at 9:20PM (17 minutes total)
- Finished Second Island at 10:03PM (43 minutes total)
- Made it to Slippery Climb, only for the game to freeze upon landing on one of the spikes.

Island 1 went really well. N.Sanity and Jungle Rollers were done combined in 3 minutes. Great Gate I forgot to suicide so had to sit through the clip of the boxes hitting Crash on the head.
Boulders went perfectly. Definitely the easiest level in the game, so I won't have any problems here.
Upstream I died twice accidentally - got a bit too eager. Sadly you really do have to wait ages for the rafts and you can't skip them.
Papu Papu was perfect (he's ridiculously easy). I died once on Hog Wild by mistake, forcing me to restart (I jumped on one of the drums and died, wtf?)
Jungle Rollers was good, and Native Fortress was decent.

Sadly it went downhill from there. Up the Creek saw me taking a good 10 deaths, all because I wasn't patient enough with all the waiting. Undecided
And for some unknown reason, I lost 9 lives in Ripper Roo ... seriously don't know what happened there. The third TNT Crate never seemed to explode soon enogh. Weird.
The Lost City went better this time. I found a way to skip the waiting at one of the stone sections, so thats a plus. Only died twice here, since I became more patient.
Temple Ruins is another horrible level. Alot of waiting is forced on you, really sucks, can't really avoid most of it. Especially the pillars that bob up and down - I'm losing at least 15 seconds on these things alone.
Road to Nowhere I have nailed, died intentionally after hitting a checkpoint, went fairly good otherwise.
Boulder Dash was fair, I could do more spin jumping but there is so much risk here.
Sunset Vista is still awful - however, I did manage to finish this one in record time. Only took about 5 minutes with an accidental death right at the end of the first attempt.
Koala Kong I died on by mistake, got a little carried away with the TNT Smashing.

So all in all, the second island time could go down to about 25 minutes I think. I definitely lost a good 10 to 15 minutes or so, and I'm sure some timesavers could be found.

I'd rather not discuss the Third Island. I'll keep it simple - Generator Room went great, and The High Road was perfect aswell. Toxic Waste I was playing around with TNT Smashing, so I lost time there. I did spend 20 minutes on Heavy Machinery, looking for some more timesavers, and I did find a few potential cuts.

I changed my mind - Slippery Climb is the worst level in terms of speedrunning. So much waiting near the end of the level for platforms. I dunno what they were thinking when they made this awful level. Didn't manage to make it further, since my game froze as I hit one of the spikes, and it never loaded after the animation of Crash spinning and landing on his back.

I'm thinking of recording a few levels to show you how I'm getting on at some point. Ideally, I would like a somewhat acceptable 100% complete time first ...
Update

- Posted a Quality Test in the Tech Help Section. Hopefully will get the approval then this run is officially a work in progress thumbsup

- Loaded my 100% save up today and practiced a few of my worser levels. Mainly spent alot of time on The Lost City / Sunset Vista. As a result, I found a neat timesaver that should prove to be pretty useful, which I uploaded here;

Definitely not easy yet, so I will practice on it a ton. This emits so much time from these sections, I should be able to cut off a good minute or so if I can get the hang of it and pull it off flawlessly.

I also uploaded my Quality Test of N.Sanity Beach. A few sections of it are slower than expected (I let the opening animation run, the section at the first crab was bad, the wall climbing was average, and I got unlucky with the Aku Mask at the wall of boxes) but if you're interested, I uploaded that aswell ;

Also played through Jungle Rollers and found out that I could use the Invicibility Mask to my advantage. Managed to pull off the Green Gem Skip while invincible! Definitely cuts huge time, since you get to go at full speed for quite a while longer, and means you don't have to pull off any awkward spins to smash the boxes while off camera, since the invincibility takes care of it. I will probably upload an up to speed version of this level in the upcoming week to show you what I mean.

Road to Nowhere I don't need to use the Red Gem at the end of the level to take me over the warp when returning to that level, I can just jump round the side. Should save a second or two.

I haven't made an account on tasvideos.org yet, nor have I sent turbofa a PM. I plan on doing as many levels as I can first, trying out everything, then sending him a collective message with all my questions, rather than one by one.

I'll post more stuff I discover in the upcoming days.
That Sunset Vista trick is really nice, excellent find, when you make your account on TAS videos you should post all your finds in the Crash Bandicoot 1 topic at the PSX section, they will help TASing the game.

Quality tests cannot be uploaded to youtube, they must be in their original encoding (upload them to dropbox or something).
Nice work so far Mr. TN Wink
Unfortunately I never owned Crash 1, the first Crash game I owned was Crash 3, however I'm looking forward to seeing your final run when it's made, good luck Cheesy
@Warepire ; Thanks again! I will make an account on TAS videos tomorrow and post some stuff there. I saw an interesting discussion in that thread about "zigzag boosting" ... I have no idea what that is. Perhaps it'd be beneficial that I find out what that is first.

@NoseyHutch ; Thank you! I'm glad to hear you would watch. Crash 1 is definitely the simplest of the series, mainly is a precision jumping game, as opposed to the other two which are much more technical. I appreciate the support. Smiley

Update

First and foremost ... my quality is acceptable (In other words, I passed the quality test)! I can finally get to work on this without fear of rejection due to quality. Feels great.

I got my newer laptop back recently so editing should be much easier now. My plans are to show a good run of Jungle Rollers using the Green Gem Skip.

I also plan on making an account on TASVideos.org and posting in the thread asking about zigzag boost, "The Great Gate" Yellow Gem Skip, and to post my findings thus far.

Will install Anri-chan tomorrow and make some content. And of course, will practice up and make a 100% complete timed.
Excellent news Sword. Looking forward to seeing more progress Smiley

Thanks again Warepire Smiley With the quality approval I feel a lot more motivated to play than I was before. Hopefully my progress shall keep on increasing.

Update

A bit of an issue with my DVD-RW disc and my Windows 7... the files aren't showing. None to worry, though. If worse comes to worse I'll just boot up my Vista laptop and use Anri-chan to rip it from there. Which is what I decided to do tonight -

Very pleased with that. Minus the loss of two masks due to pressure, and the waiting at the end (which I did just to play it safe and made sure I finished the level without death - had I not have lost the masks I wouldn't have needed to wait... ah well.)

And I can finally announce, that I've finally completed a 100% run from start to end! Grin

Start = 10:20PM
Island 1 = 10:20PM - 10:34PM (14 minutes)
Island 2 = 10:34PM - 11:10PM (36 minutes)
Island 3 = 11:10PM - 12:09AM (59 minutes)
Backtrack = 12:09AM - 12:52AM (43 minutes)
Finished = 12:52AM
End time = 2 hours, 32 minutes

Island 1 went really really well. It was going to be 10 minutes, then I died three times on Native Fortress due to lack of patience. Had to exist out of the level and enter and start again twice.

Island 2 was good, except for The Lost City, Temple Ruins and Sunset Vista. Each of which took a good 8-10 minutes to complete, when they should have taken 4-5 at maximum. Died many times and had to exit out on these. I can see Island 2 being completed in 25 minutes, easy.

Island 3 was went it really started to go wrong. Heavy Machinery, The High Road and Castle Machinery went very well and were completed on first tries without death. Slippery Climb, Lights Out and Jaws of Darkness cost me valuable time ... not to mention silly deaths on Generator Room and Toxic Waste ... ugh. Island 3 can easily sub 40 minutes.

Backtracking went well for the most part. Was a little slow on The Great Gate... however, Upstream, Native Fortress and Road to Nowhere went excellent. On Rolling Stones I fell down the last pit since my X button didn't register the jump... had to redo that from the start. Boulder Dash I had to leave and enter again since I failed a TNT Smash and ended up killing myself. Whole Hog went very good. Cortex Power was average. Fumbling in the Dark cost me some valuable time at the end, boosting what should have been a 2h 25m run, into the 2h 32m that I finished with. It should take around 20-25 minutes to backtrack, ideally.

I also died on The Great Hall twice ... right at the start, was too eager to jump on the moving gem as I was going to finish. Really need to work on that.

All in all, I am happy to have finally completed it 100% under timed conditions - but obvious mistakes are present, and I still need lots of practice. It's clear to me what levels I need to work on, so I will do that. Once I get a run that is under 2 hours length, I will start recording runs.
Excellent execution of the gem-skip. Great progress so far, let's hope turbofa or anyone else on TASvideos can explain the yellow gem skip so we can find out if it's doable in real time on a console.

Keep it up! Smiley
Hey Sword, how is it going?
Edit history:
Sword: 2011-05-20 08:06:19 am
I will admit, I haven't played this game much since my last post. I picked up Crash Bandicoot: Wrath of Cortex again and tried to get close to 100%. I've also had some bad luck when it comes to MKWii, losing one of my WRs... so I tried a bit of that, no luck there. I did however accomplish one of my MKWii goals so that's off my mind for the current.

I'm in the mood for playing this game again so I'll most likely pick it up again tonight and see what I can pull off. It doesn't take too long to get into it, thankfully.

Post has been made on TASVideos.org ; http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=272926#272926

For the meantime I will just assume that this skip is not possible for humans, or that it's of such unbelievable difficultly that it's not worth investing hours after hours just to get it right.

My main concern is that I'm waiting a lot on several levels. The only reason my time was 2h 32m was because on several levels I tried to bypass the standard "wait for the platform to come to you" procedure, but it just killed me many times.

I'll post my progress tonight.

Nice to see you playing again. Wrath of Cortex had really bad loading times, IIRC. It kinda ruined it for me back when I was 11 or so. Seemed like a good game otherwise.

Good luck on your next attempts.
