I'm great fan of Commandos series. Commandos BEL and BTCOD-these both were awesome games and these are my favourites too. I've discovered this site about 6-7 months ago and I thought I may do some speedruns for games what I like the most. Starcraft, Warcraft III, Commandos and Deus Ex. Starcraft-It seems that I can't improve current records. Warcraft-I denied that because I'm noob at it xD. And finally Deus Ex-there's a speedrun but I can't understand some of the tricks and glitches -_-.

So my question is:would there be interest for speedrun of Commandos BEL(Behind Enemy Lines)and maybe BTCOD(Beyond the CAll of Duty)too?
I have most of the missions under 5-7minutes but there's still a lot to improve.
And I used the search function but there's request for this game. But I need some interest from your side for it!At least few people who would like to waste some time and maybe a few people who would like to waste time and give me advices too. Grin

Btw, you did surely notice it but for those who didn't:I'm new to these forums here:)
Thread title:
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
I've beat behind the enmy lines, I have to admit, its pretty long. there is about 21 missions for bel, and 9? for beyond the call of duty.
speed run would really be "beating the game faster", cause there is only one way to beat every mission. unless you use sequence breaking, for example : in the "where the eagle dare" in bel, you can send the spy go up and kill every one by pushing (You can do that by walk beside the barrels) the gas barrels in to buildings, and blow them up and then let the green beret get up via cart.

Although  the idea of it is not bad, but if you can't get bel finished under 2 hours, I will fall a sleep. unless you go for segment.

Commandos 1 has one huge problem that really destroys any speedrun at its origin.

The game speed depends on how fast your PC is and since there is no timer, you can't precisely tell what time you achieved. Maybe patch fixes this, but I was never able to even install it, it just didn't work. I'm not saying you can't do a speedrun, but it will never be submitted here on SDA, because everyone would have different times.

I've actually considered a speedrun myself, but I refused to even start due to this huge problem.

Anyway, if you're still going to make it, here are some tips:

- You can raise alarm in almost every mission, except missions 15 (up to assassination) and 18? (the one with 4 enemy sappers).

- Don't bother playing it stealth, you can "wipe out" all enemies that come from barracks after raised alarm using with at least 3 people hidden behind some rock or corner, using only pistols and a very rapid button mashing. It will require many attempts though.

- You'll probably be forced to use multiple segments for each mission since one mistake = death

- In mission 13, there is an ugly bug, which prevents you from finishing the mission in some conditions. I think it has sth to do with the transporter parked in garage on right, but I'm not sure atm.

- In mission 8, you have to kill couple guys in right upper corner before you blow up the targets, otherwise the Driver will be killed

- In mission 15, the fastest way to assassinate general is probably to go on roof of a building right across the garden, then snipe him.

- In mission 18? (the one with 4 enemy sappers), there is a very nice trick to end this mission earlier. If you bump to a soldier, he'll move couple pixels away then get back to his position, but enemy sapper won't ! Soo, you can push him to a place, where nobody see and eliminate him. This way you can easily kill sappers on both shores thus completely avoid half of the mission. Then just get Diver to the middle section and kill the remaining 2 with harpoon or pistol.

- Best way to attract a soldier seems to be using a dead body.

- To record this game, you need Hypercam or Camtasia, Fraps doesn't work iirc.

Ewil:I know about the timer thingy and I was prepared for it thus the time would be aproximate. But I didn't know about the different speed of PCs. Hell, this ruins my idea Shocked But I will still try for some kind of run and thanks for the tips!I really appreciate them.

mikechenkeha:It is possible to do bel under 2 hours for me so you won't (probably) fall asleep  Grin
I've played the original Commandos game (but just that, no addons or successors) and would like to see a run of it, too.

A thought about the timer problem: When recording with Fraps, Growler Cam or whatever doesn't that force the in-game framerate to whatever you set in the recording program thus making the speed no longer hardware dependent?
Proud to be Slavic!!!;0
Kabuto, that's possible. I've used only Camtasia and it forces you to set FPS. Thus all who would try Commandos run, all would have same conditions. But I don't know about other recorders.
IIRC, the engine has 30fps limit ALL THE TIME since it's a 2D game, so any fps forcing won't help you. The game simply runs faster depending on your pc. It's about twice as fast on modern processors as on Pentium II, so you have to use Cpu Killer software. Unfortunately, it's quite expensive (29.5$) for what it can do. Well, there is always another way to crack trial version...

Anyway, good luck. I really wanna see this one.
defying gravity
When I played the game a year ago, I found a pretty well done speedrun on youtube for most of the levels. You might want to check it out.

im sure you mean this one
And you can exactly see the speed problem, but good for strategy planning.
Heh, that speedrun on Chinese version is quite different, I don't recall Spy having unlimited number of poison injections nor he can drive a truck. I'm also not sure whether you can really kill a group with just a harpoon. Also, he has indestructible truck. Well, asian versions seems to be always easier for some reason.

I'd also like to see a run, although I never had been able to play it properly because of that speed problem. Maybe go for Commandos 2 aswell? Smiley

edit: @Ewil cool, didn't knew that, thx
There already is a speedrun of commandos 2, see this.

From what I remember, Spooky has unlimited injections and he (obviously) can't drive a vehicle. You might be thinking of Commandos 2 and 3, where he had limits to the poison in the syringe. The harpoon is probably possible for ambushing around a corner, but I'm pretty sure you'd have to fire, put it away, pull it back out, and fire again in some sort of rapid-fire fashion. Sounds unrealistic to me, but I haven't watched the videos in that link.

About the truck being indestructible, that sounds like cheating. Tanks I can obviously understand, but trucks have pathetic armor.

Opinions may differ, but I'd like to point out that that run, while very well done, is extremely boring (this coming from a huge fan). The music is disabled and all you ever see is a massively zoomed out view of the map with people running around in different directions. Perhaps I just missed the fun in it.

I would be interested, but the speed issues have already been mentioned. It's worth noting that Beyond the Call of Duty has a speed slider that works pretty well, since I replayed that game on Hard a while back (XP computer). Random crashing would still hit me when I went to Quicksave or Quickload, but I think you could work around that.

That said, I can't give you much (if any) advice. :/
No, you have limited amount of injections. I think the game will even display how many is left if you keep mouse cursor on it for a while. It makes sense since if you'd have unlimited "ammo", Spy would be the ultimate soldier and Barret would be almost useless.

I found that Commandos 2 speedrun very entertaining Smiley

About that harpoon, I think that if you kill one soldier from a group, others will immediately turn around and start shooting, but I'm not sure atm. They certainly do if you use knife.

Okay so you convinced me to do a run. Tommorow(or maybe today)I will begin to do a "run" for BEL and BTCOD. That different speed on different PC fucking kills me but what can I do Cry
For the chinese guy at the youtube who did some 99% of missons(one is missing there but I can't recall which T_T):
a)for the soldiers group thingy:harpoon really works in rapid-fire action:take harpoon-shoot-cancel it-fire again etc, but it works only for groups where are no GENERALS(or whatever I should call them)so if u snipe them from behind it's good but in that third misson where he sniped I should rather use all four men and shoot them with gun. The general will just fastly turn around him and he raises the alarm and I bet I can't get so fast that I can kill the group with general.
b)yes, spy has unlimited injections, but beret is more used for his speed.
c)he could've done the 3rd mission in approximately 2-5 seconds faster. In the end after sapper placed a bomb and he sailed with marine to the other coast. When they were sailing, he should save time by telling spy to run into the truck.
So far, I've got in watching only to 10th mission. o.o
btw, I found that Comm2 speedrun very sexy and entertaining ;P
Some people think they can outsmart me.
I'm almost certain I've seen a speedrun of Commandos 1. It might have only been a couple of missions.

There's 18? Wow. I think I only did the first 7, and put it aside on 8. It's the one with all the oil tanks in a desert setting, and you've got the sniper and Tiny.

I'd watch it.

Unless this has been recently changed, I believe it has already been established that you can use faulty programming to your advantage. Your run can still be obsoleted by a slower, yet better one, though. You could also say the Fallout games have a similar problem, so it's worth a reference. They have runs on the site, after all.
You've convinced me to install it again to see whether Spy really has unlimited injections...yeah he has unlimited. I always thought it's limited though Sad Sorry.

About the speed thingy, maybe it will be allowed on SDA, but send a pm to Mike Uyama and ask him first. As for Fallout games, it only affects speed on map, not the in the isometric view, that's why it was probably allowed.

No doubt the Chinese version is a bit...cheated and he also don't push the game to the limit. Notice he never gets hurt and never uses pistols, which could be sometimes faster than knife or injection. I think you might be able to run through enemy territory using medipacks, then get a transporter or a tank with Driver, like in mission 7 or 10.
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
I think we should use an OFFICIAL version of the game, which is available off steam.
Not everyone has Steam and want to buy a game twice unless it's free.
Proud to be Slavic!!!;0
Ewil:all make mistakes :] and that chinese version is A LOT cheated >.< see this video

tank hasn't so infinite range T_T

by the way:today I've discovered WAY faster method in 1st mission than the chinese guy. You must shot these soldiers with gun. With this, I can do this in 53.5 seconds and I doubt I have faster pc than him. I don't think I can do it under 50 seconds but I will definitely try.
Just so you know, steam has released a patch for Commandos I that finally solves the speed issue, so I guess that  a potential speedrun would be accepted on SDA.
What is actually considered normal speed, is there some ways to define it? I know i had some old version which was somewhat fast and the GOG version which was slower.
Try to compare GOG and Steam versions. If both matches, you have your answer.
