I'm glad I popped in here. This game looks fantastic, I have never played it but I surely want to own it after watching a few minutes of the Tas by ans. I can only offer motivation at this point and say that I would definitely watch a run for this game after having completed myself. So good luck to anyone running this!
you should play it, it's one of the absolute best NES / platform games out there!
note that AnS's TAS plays the game on Hard!, where everything kills in one hit. that's the mode i plan to run the game on - i'm waiting until i have a lot of spare time to attempt it because it's such a brutal undertaking. specter plans to run the game on normal without deathwarping but i think he doesn't have a capture setup right now iirc.
Yeah I have been on a hiatus from this game for a while because of school and work. I'm not sure how entertaining the normal mode run would be since I still can't beat it without taking a ton of hits. LoF you really should give it a try Cyghfer is right about it being one of the best platform games around. Great music awesome sound effects (barring that irritating jump sound) and very smooth controls. Plus having 4 characters that do different things adds a lot to the mix.
Kinda reviving this thread since I was able to talk a little bit with Cyghfer and Specter in funkdoc's chat about this game last night! I'm sad that there's still nothing but TAS runs around that I can find of this game. Hopefully that will change soon!
Thanks Specter for linking me to the TAS, though I have seen it before, and there's a beautiful HD version also available:
I'm sorry to disappoint Cyghfer but I've been practicing normal mode. I'm curious if there's a "quick" way to get your health down quickly for the yellow/red planet skips or is it just "run into enemies as you go"? Also, this one has been bugging the hell out of me, but is there any consistent way to hit the log jump in green planet? (1:15 in the video).
This one may sound stupid/embarassing for me, but if there a magical point where if you don't mash shoot fast enough, it resorts to some static rate? I'm talking mainly against Al Negator because my attempts to speed up that fight haven't worked so far and it seems like no matter how fast I mash I can't hit him faster. Maybe I'm just not good enough at mashing! Finally, I've been spending a lot of time practicing the cell lately, as my boss strats are kinda slow and the disappearing block section is the cause of many deaths still. I forsee many frustrating hours ahead!
Mazrim, glad to see you are playing this game as well. The fastest way to get your health down on the Red Planet in my opinion is to take damage from the lava waves section as the lava does significant damage. Yellow planet the only way I currently know is to just blaze through the first couple sections taking as much damage as possible. Also the log jump is still eluding me as well, I'm trying daily to find ways to pull it off consistently, that being said I timed both the jump and using the bottom log and it was only a 2-3 second difference. It's a cool jump but will end a lot of your runs, but at least its early on. Good luck Mazrim and if you stream this game then I'll make sure to watch sometime.
I've been able to practice the Normal No-Warp run a bit, and I'm successfully getting the time down. I'm still pretty terrible in some places (Blue Planet and Magma Tanker #1 culprits...) but I'm getting pretty confident. Just shy of sub-40 minutes tonight on stream.
If I toss the lousy death on the spinning head boss, I would have gotten sub 40 for sure. 35 minutes is definitely doable, so it would be about 10 minutes slower than the hard mode run. I've found a couple tricks in Yellow Planet to speed up the extra sections, like the coaster jump and the blind jump on the asteroid I failed multiple times in that recorded run. As for Red Planet, I haven't got any way of speeding up the green ball portion yet.

Hey Mazrim, I'd be up for that. I know it's late and I haven't checked in to this thread that often, but I made a video of how to get through the blind meteor jumps for you if you haven't been able to do it without stopping on the yellow planet. http://www.twitch.tv/specter55393/c/2338377 is the link to the video, excuse the sound, my mic was picking up the sound from my tv as I was recording it lol. Anyway if you want to race sometime just let me know, You can PM me on here or Twitch if you want, and good luck with your goal times
Ahhhh, that's great, Specter! I'll definitely practice those meteor jumps. I should load up an emulator and try and hit a couple ideas I have for the roller coaster portion of Yellow Planet as well. Right now I can only skip the first section, but not the next two because Bucky doesn't have enough time to charge his jump. We'll see....
What's your current best time? Have you tried lately? I'm at 36:42 now so I'm approaching that 35 minute mark (twitch highlight here: http://www.twitch.tv//mazrim_taim/c/2310597). I'd love to try to get a deathless run in since that would probably get the time closer to 30 minutes, but there's still plenty of horrific deaths I get that I need to work out. I'm inconsistent in too many places.
Anyway, I was hoping to get some more attempts in tonight, and I will PM you when I know have time so we can plan a race!
To be honest, I haven't really clocked a best time, every time I died I reset, and sadly no I haven't played in a while. I recorded that last night so the skills are THAT rusty I suppose lol. I'll go ahead and do a playthrough tonight and get a time for ya to compare with at least. And yeah, hit me up and we can race when you have the time, I can do it pretty much any day except Sundays. Good luck breaking that sub 35 mark and I hope you can find a way to skip the other 2 roller coaster sections as well because I haven't been able to lol.
33:25 tonight! Thanks for the meteor jump trick. I didn't get that down first try in this run but it came in handy. Still lots of deaths but hey, I'm happy with my timing coming down in big chunks. Still experimenting as well. http://www.twitch.tv/mazrim_taim/c/2342060
Just watched the run and I gotta say, barring the few death mistakes it was pretty good. The one thing I would point out to you is trying to remember when to switch characters on stage transitions, it will knock off a good 30 seconds at least. And from watching the air marshal fight, switching to Bucky is a great idea if you can get the switch back to Willy quick enough, lots of missed opportunities to deal the big damage, but that will come with more practice. Great job knocking off that chunk of time though and keep pushing. I'm gonna start grinding hardcore again cause I have to keep up with you now lol.
Yeah I've got some terrible character switches in there...I need to basically memorize the next screen so I know what I'm going to face and who to be. The one section where the lights go out, I can NEVER seem to remember to switch to Deadeye before, and he's a full four select presses away when I get there, so it's pretty frustrating.
That was one of my worst Air Marshal fights I've had in a while unfortunately. It's one I have practiced and definitely can do better. Same with the Toad Carrier (what I call the boss before Air Marshal...no idea what the official name is), though I did manage to get the 1 cycle.
Haha, I did a full run last night for the first time in a while and died SOOOO many times myself. Total time was an abysmal 38 minutes, Center of the Magma Tanker ruined me as I was on pace for around 32 minutes. I also missed the 1 cycle on the air ship. What times do you usually stream at, I'll drop in and watch some live runs.
Magma Tanker is the run ender for sure. It's so many long acts with too many easy ways to mess up. If you're not doing full runs often, I'd say 38 minutes is fine!
I usually stream around 8 PM Mountain Time, so 10 ET. I have a busy couple days at work right now Saturday is looking like the next time I can stream, which might be any time during the day. Maybe we can race on Saturday?
Yeah I can do a race on Saturday that would be easy, and I'm on Mountain time as well so that works out pretty well as far as time goes. Gotta be sometime before 6 PM mountain though, just let me know.
Just did a second play through, got down to 34 minutes but would have been like 2 minutes faster except I accidentally touched the ship as it was dieing which started the fight over again also died on the spike auto scroller in the cell stage, tapped the dpad too hard and walked too far into a spike lol. And the last death came at the beginning of the salvage chute, I miss timed the 2nd jump over the spikes and jumped early, all in all 3 deaths is not bad but deathless, it is not.
On a game like this, deathless is gonna be a bitch to do consistently. Don't worry! Just focus on getting the time down, which shouldn't be hard since you had some deaths in really time consuming places. I gotta step my game up!
I tried using an emulator last night to practice, but man...lag and framerate problems make it pretty much impossible. Back to the NES for the grind!
I still haven't been able to pull this trick off for skipping the second coaster section in Yellow Planet Act 6, but I'm very close...maybe someone else can see if it's actually doable. http://www.twitch.tv/mazrim_taim/c/2364568
If Blinky is too close to the edge of the coaster when it slows down, it will push him too far and he'll lose his charge. It's a very fine line, and I might not be close enough yet.
I'm sad that you weren't able to make it for the race today Specter. I played for a couple hours anyway, and got a new time! This might be the best I get for a while. Nice improvement.
It's roughly 2:30 more to do the extra sections you skip in Hard mode, so I'm thinking I'd love to be able to hit Cyghfer's time plus the extra sections. 29 minutes then.
I had such a bad Air Marshal fight...I was nervous as hell and wanted to do the suicide strat and just stay close but I couldn't even hit select properly so it wasn't going to happen. Sub 30 minutes next time!
Specter, if you'd like to try again for a race, let me know!
