Up to Trinity.

Including a trick I didn't know of.
everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
Doesn't really matter, but by converse, do you mean use Jolt and Slice to wound them near death?

What the guide says makes it unclear, but IIRC it is only the farthest ranger in the room that is the trigger for Tantra.

That Tantra fight seems like it needs a little luck to go that well. You need Lin to get Forcacion'd, and you want Lin to die before Nina, and Ryu to survive.

I fought Gigantis too. About pulling him, you can pull people by z-targeting with R2 and then holding onto triangle before shooting with Lin. This does knockback based on how long you hold it and gets an enemy's attention usually. (Side note, since not everyone knows about R2, Nina's move attracts enemy drops so you can pick them up if they didn't fall on walkable areas.) Holy shit, 40 fire bombs. =/ I was just expecting to use Fragball here.

I'm very slightly surprised that he used D-Dive against 2nd Tantra fight, since I didn't. But, I killed most of the petraphages for party XP during this area. It's not that hard with Lin, but it does takes time. I also went back to the appraisal girl after Zeno to get Violet Blade, so the weapon was of course much better.

I'm surprised he's able to D-Dash as much as he is doing really.

The Trinity fight, I did without D-Dive, but I was fully aware that if there is D-Counter to spare, this would definitely use D-Dive to save a lot of time walking around the area.

So the trick you didn't know of was the 40 fire bombs? That is pretty crazy.
"I'm surprised he's able to D-Dash as much as he is doing really."

Not sure exactly how much that is, but if you use it in bursts and only near enemies, it's a pretty small drain overall.
everybody wanna tell you the meaning of music
I know, but considering I couldn't even make it through the game not using any...

It's just that it seems like he's using it a lot, like for entire areas. Even if you only tap it (which is what I would do, dunno what he does), that's like 0.1% or so. Doing that all the time has to add up.
${$uid.$user}{' usertext'}
IIRC more like 1% for each 'tap'.
I tried that one too, to get through tight situations, but once you tap it you dash for the average length of a room.

I'm such an idiot. I had a lengthy answer to your lengthy post Enhasa, but then I closed Firefox before submitting it. Meh.

Summary:
- I always thought you have to trigger all the rangers to get to Tantra.
- I knew about R2 for items, not for enemies and even less for boss enemies that trigger with a cutscene (Did that one trigger with a cutscene? I remember it, but what's my memory...).
- Yes I meant the 40 fire bombs. Will be funny in a run, imagine one of the "too hard" people see him bombed into oblivion.

Done

The data section at the end is translated aswell, but rather freely, because most of it is known anyway.

I do know now that grampadams are G-Flares, and edited them accordingly.

Next I'll see into that 1h10min thing.

Oh and btw. can someone try that 0.06% D-Dashing for me? I could've sworn that you get a huge counter boost everytime you give the Dash button (was it R2?) a funny look.
1% for each tap? What the hell? The 0,06% listed is far closer to the real increase. But obviously I can't check it now because I deleted all my saves. Figures.
${$uid.$user}{' usertext'}
Ok, ok, my apologies.
I just checked, and 0.06% is correct.
Fixed in the online version too.

Whoops, somehow I missed the fact you completed this, sorry. =(

I've just had time to skim this just now. I will read it very thoroughly eventually of course.

Yeah I figured that much when I saw how active you were over at Bisqwit's. But then again, your "I gonna post in every topic there is"-flashs are always nice. Cheesy

I've been active at bisqwit's since like, 2 days ago. And I posted here yesterday. =p

Anyway Mike Uyama had a funny post back when I had like 20 posts and nobody knew who I was. It was the first SDA awards thread and people were talking about "spammiest member" and someone (whose join date was actually after mine) was like "what about this new Enhasa guy? he seems to post a lot." And Mike's response was "nah, he's been around, he just spams when he gets a chance."

About the report:

Last Resort in BoF games means to take all your defense and use it for attack instead.

He says to get the strong sword but doesn't say when he would use it. I'm assuming you would equip it for using dragon since the base power is higher? I don't even remember how it works anymore.

I was a little surprised he takes the Nugget route instead of the Karon route in Power Two. Maybe not if he does that, and if the baby Nuggets escape (which I didn't know). Oh, while I thought of it, "reaction bomb" definitely has to be "proximity bomb," and not firebomb or anything else. Sorry, being a native English speaker I'm embarrassed not to have noticed this earlier. =p

Pandora Box for 7th Sense is what I would have figured. I don't think he really says how he gets those and Power Boosts though. Is it true you can get 7th Sense from the Cerberus enemies?

With magic traps, IIRC all the ones in a round count against absolute defense (i.e. the "combo" is his movement), so 3 G-Flares could work maybe.

4% to hit Jezuit twice? Um, that sounds bad, as in "not possible" for a SS run.

Good work! Now I'm wondering about the newest version. =p
${$uid.$user}{' usertext'}
Bad Enhasa... Edits don't bump the topic...

So Last Resort is the ideal time to DDive. Figures.

Base power for dragon attacks ist correct. IIRC you can keep up to three weapons for each chraracter with you.

Reaction boms sounded like Proximity bomb, yes, but I never used the bombs better than dynamite so I wasn't sure. I'll edit it in then.

Power Boosts, I think I read in one of the walk throughs that you get a 100% drop for them of one of the bosses. Might be there.

Pandoras Box has a set attack pattern too, you only have to know it and you'll get 7th sense everytime.

Well this is new, and maybe the opposite of the last post, but now I'm bumping just to let you know that I have read what you posted. I have nothing new to say really. Wink

Cosmos: 2009-08-23 11:15:09 am
heya guys im bumping an old topic up, i am a bof fan, and i loved this game, first i thought this game was so strange and not bof worthy but i played it so much times (and i coudnt beat it) but i didnt play it anymore. Not to long ago i thought, lets play the game not worth of the series once more, and i beat it, i was happy... i did better then i thought (dratio 1/1xxx)  or something, and then i wanted the 1/4 d ratio badly, and i got it (learned on gamefaqs how to do dragon runs, and saw the zeno run, i didnt try this run because i thought up my own the Elyon run(coudnt find it on the web), very quick exp becuz of the egos + 7 HEX aplied(10%extra xp), but no gold exp boost. i made 1/4 d-ratio in no time and did the run on my 3rd clear with +5 dragon blade. and didnt want to touch the game any soon again. till i came across this website.

To the point:
I was shocked becuz there was no freakin any of the Bof speed runs D: and i searched on the forum yesterday and this topic came out of it, and i saw that some jap guy already did some crazy things and even written how he did it, i cant find the video run myself... but it seems gorash did the translation :D.

So i have like ''what the hell, why dont i do this run? its already written for me(i dont really like that but oh wel it makes it easyer for me)''. so i did some test runs, on the first segment, scratch till cyclops, and after some realy bad trys i did it in 8 mins to (and even had a really bad path, had to throw all my meat away :S and bumping into walls little to often haha). So i got the confidence now that i think i could do it, its segmented so perfection is a must and easyer obtaineble. I play the pal version so i dont have to worry about save tokens (muhahahha) and there is an option on 60hz so no slime play.

In short:
- I think im going to do this run
- Not as fast as the jap, but close to it
- If my confidence gets destroyed becuz the crazy stuff is going to be to hard  then i will post that i quit
- I think this will take a while becuase im am first doing the test run, and i dont really know how i am going to upload the video yet, and what the rules are to upload the video segmented etc (i prefer a SS run, but thats not possible in this already written run, and maybe i am going to do it after this run, i have some simple ideas but it would take a bit longer ofc, and i totaly have not yet the real experience to try this)

I hope you guys will watch it if its finaly done, and enyoy it ofc :p (but yeah IF that day ever comes)

*side note: i wanted to do a bof 2 run first, but the european version is 50hz, this really sucks, it looks like i walk through slime, i did a time quick test(on emulator usa/europe roms) i walked in a city from 1 point to another and the average of USA was 4,62 sec and european 5,60 sec (timing done with hand but the exact results wont be that big of a diffrence, so yeah big diffrence in a full speed run indeed). But i wont buy a USA snes + game, and aint planning on playing it on GBA... and the european wii game buy option has the european bof 2 and yeah 50hz.....

Edit: Update
The game is freakin insane, tbh its not really a speedrun friendly game, but i did the first 2 segments, and am busy with the third one, the only problem is, because this game is so frustrating to speedrun (i finally know why there isnt 1 already) and i dont have much time (very little time) maybe i get the whole run done in 2010.

The game is based on freakin much luck evreything is ''random'' you can have in 1 dungeon 4-6 diffrent item/monster paths, and the paths are totaly not balanced, even the item shop is random: example, the itemshop can sell meat 8z, and dynamite 40z/bombs 80z +stuff OR it can sell sleep mushroom 18z/ confuse mushroom and bombs 80z+ otherstuff. the meat is to lure, the mushrooms to (the side effects are lesser important in the speedrun cuz you need to bomb) but the mushrooms has dubbel the cost, and thats very frustrating, and if you saved near that shop(almost like evrey savepoint)... your stuck with it.
I got the skills, thats for sure but mistakes are super easely made (like in evrey speedrun) and in my 2 good segments there are some mistakes to but those are really small. I wont do a SS thats fore sure, and if some1 trys it will easely cost 20-30 mins extra instead of an segmented run because of the luck involved, and the good execution if you finally have the good monster/item route!

Cosmos: 2010-02-11 11:08:32 am
Hey guys (if any1 reads this at all), i was finally thinking about doing the bof5dq run soon, and i just saw a youtube video of an SS run from an (i think japanese?) guy who did it in 1h06! my goal is to do a segmented run from scratch (new game) with out any sol abuse. and i think i can nail the time atleast 2 min faster (he made some mistakes, that are only accepteble in his SS run and not an segmented run).

Plans:
Most of the things i want to do the same as that guy(2 bad i aint allowed to give a link to the video IIRC), but in his third danger room he uses his dragon and i was a little bit shocked about that because i aint going to use it because i want to use my D-counter as much as possible for D-dashes(tabs 1 to 4 max seconds usage).

Edit:

I was thinking to skip the save point in corplabs before the frozen road and not get antenna(ninas elec wpn) and food+bombs restock, because it takes like 35 seconds to do those things, but i aint sure if il be missing out on the items and the thunder attack on the danger room in the frozen roads. Have to test this ofc.

When i killed zeno i was thinking to go back and indentify the violet blade she drops, but i aint to sure if this time loss will match up with the next dungeon, the guy who did the SS run used dragon mode to crush tantra, but i am goign to try it w/o dragon mode and try to kill it purely slashing him to death, because i have more d-counter to d-dash in the futere segments(but ofcourse i need to test all this because this takes time.... roughly 2 min in total? because tantra uses status effects and all, i aint sure it will pay off in the end... (tbh i dont think so))

What i was amazed about that he did it SS and fought the last regent boss jezuit, because the transelated guide stated he had a extreemly low properbilaty to hit him, for an SS this would be a little bit over the top, but i think the multisegmented guy in the guide was an lower level overall then the SS guy in the video, so the hit would be lower... i think..

Anyways i was thinking about an intresting diffrent run (just thinking not doing, so only theory here)
An fastest way to get 1/4 d-ratio from a new game w/o using any sol. i think it can be done in 2 playthroughs
my thoughts:
- Play the first game SS(no saving in between, you need ofc save at the end), try to get atleast an d-rato of 1/1024(the lower the better!!) because you can get the dragon sword next run(IIRC) thats about 60 pts, 10 pts for EX, 10 points for time, 10 points for no saves, 1 point for bleu chests, and maybe 1 point for map exploration, the rest your average level.
- Try to get the antz colony get to kokonhoray (i totaly dont know how fast it can be done)
- Hold some party exp to a certain extend maybe fight more groups/hunt more box items

-Next game get the dragonsword and try to get, 10 points for save, 50 points for level (this 1 is hard, the main hinderance) 10 points EX turn, 10 points for time, 7 points for map exploration(maybe need a better d-ratio first run to get to more d-ratio chambers), 7 for bleu chest, and 6 kokonhooray (B31F - B35F after that it will be harder with more dukes, i think that pumping ryu to level 20-30 in the begin will do the trick) ofcourse big abuse of the dragon to kill big groups in 1 time in ex turn, and use all party exp for the orriginal run. IIRC kokon hooray time is not counted ingame time....

What do you guys think? (if anybody still cares) all suggestions are welcome.
Waiting hurts my soul...
What's stopping you from linking to the video?
Hey guys, i just wanted to say, its done! and im very happy with the clear time! but i wont spoil it(if you want to know you may always pm), its an segmented BOFDQ 5 PAL run on 60Hz 12 segments in total.
I hope you guys who are interested in the run want to verify it ^_^! (but its not yet encoded/submitted and stuff, tomorrow i will begin with all that)
good job. i never thought the game could be done this fast on a fresh file.
Hello everyone! I hope I'm posting this in the correct topic.

I know there hasn't been any activity for this game in a while, but BoF5 is one of my favorites and I've spent a little bit of time doing single segment runs of the game while streaming on twitch. As you can imagine, the SS strats are very similar to the cosmos segmented run (really amazing job on that run, btw). I got a 1:02 last night on a solid run with a bit of time lost on the Baphomet danger room in Industrial Zone.

Twitch version with commentary: http://www.twitch.tv/davidk519/c/1730543

Just wondering if there would be any interest in a SS submission given how similar it is to the segmented run. I'll likely take a break from playing for a couple weeks, but I may eventually go for sub 1:00 or do something crazy like route a 1/4 run.
welcome to the machine
This is one of my favorite games and I'd love to see an SS on SDA.  Def. gonna watch that when I have time.

Hey DavidK5,

Woa, I didnt know somebody was going up for a challange this big, I just saw this post, and saw that you had a SS of 0.56 minutes... out of respect I have seen the whole run, really amazing job, because you and I both know how frustrating that game is.
I am amazed by the time, especially if you compare it to my segmented run, If I look at your SS runned executio/monster paths/lucky items/crits vs my Segment runned version, the segmeted run is (as should) superior, but the time difference is no that big, So I assume the loading time and saving time adds up a lot to the game time...

Although I personnally do not nderstand why you go with the Violet blade, I think the sword I used was superior, Or is the switching of weopons is not making up for the damage output? I can't recall exactly but I rember something about that the violet blade was just not worth it.

Anyways, I would say as a speed runner: go for your aim, 0.55 minutes Cheesy . But as a person: please don't obsolete my run Sad  haha

Don't know if my run will get trashed out if you deliver 0.55 SS, 1 minute difference.... it feels as if I did something majorly wrong haha....

Wow, I didn't even notice you had replied here until now, cosmos. I don't know if you're referring to the Celtis or Strong Sword+4, but both rely on getting the right shop spawn and having additional money which just adds more luck factors to the run. You can kill the bosses just as fast with the Violet Blade, and like you said you don't have to spend time switching equipment every time.

Anyway, I came in here to post that I managed to get 0:54 single segment yesterday on a Power Boost run. I made a 10 second mistake in Power One and Storage was pretty bad, but otherwise the run was absolutely perfect. I think 0:53 is possible with an absolutely perfect run (probably with Power Boost), but I'm not gonna grind for it. My goal was 0:55, so I'm pretty happy with 0:54.

Youtube of the 0:54:

Commentary recording:
http://www.twitch.tv/davidk519/c/2489003
Congrats! very impressive run :p the 54 instead of 55 is is a pleasant surprise, even with the mistake and unlucky d-breaths

The execution of the frozen road was really slick(especially under such pressure), the spider room was pretty nice to.
I was suprised about the cyclops battle, that you used the combo (slice/vert/deathbringer) instead of slices after you obtained the PB, because with my luck, the chance of hitting with vert slash and sometimes deathbringer are low.

Anyways, I will redo my segmented run with an optimistic goal of 0:49, because i have some mayor speedrunning strategys stored in my mind for a long time, and your run gave me some nice time saving suggestions as well Tongue
It will be segmented, but because im pretty busy these days and the weather is so nice, i dont know  when I will start practicing, but the theory is almost done :P.

Hey, I was wondering if I could talk about doing a 1/256 to 1/4 run here? I know this is mostly talking about just forgoing all sense of score, and just rushing to the end...but I think there's some merit in doing a run like this too. Plus you can show off alot more of the game as well.

I've already done some mapping for to get to 1/256 via temp saving a file to the end, since hard saving constantly takes off some points...and those are the most vital 10 points that you need.

From the FAQ on D-Ratio's

http://www.gamefaqs.com/ps2/561476-breath-of-fire-dragon-quarter/faqs/20342

I basically came with these desired scores to reach the 70-74 pt threshold to achieve 1/256. These can be altered slightly depending on specific factors.

Desired Game Time: 13-15 Hours = 5 Points
Desired Ex Turn %: 75-80% = 6 Points
Desired Treasure Chests 33-35 = 7 points (Can't get all 42 unless 1/256)
Desired Saves: 0 = 10 points
Desired Map Completion: 90% = 5 points (Can't get everywhere unless 1/256)

Desired Level: 37-41 = 37-41 Points

I have not listed Kokon Horay since that isn't necessary to get to 1/256, but it might when attempts to 1/256 --> 1/4 take place, since there will have to be some liberties taken.

Edit: Also...I'm not doing a straight out 1/4 run yet due to how insane the margin of error is. But someday I'll get around to trying that.
Hey guys, long time no see.

So... I have some interesting news... Il just post the pic, i think it says a lot :p

So i finally got the time to 0:49 m ingame time, But this was done with an emulator, so this was a casual TAS run. So it wasnt frame perfect or anything, it was just an SS with save states to test out the strategys i had in mind - which turned out really well ;).

So... last year I wanted to start speed running, I had a high motivation level, but my previous record set up wasnt availble anymore - so I bought additional equipment... but my TV had problems with it. So FINNALY i bought a new TV.. Now i need the motivation for it. So i started a little bit of emulating speedrunning - well this time really helps :P.

I think il start speedrunning really soon, it will be segmented, I think it will be done in 4 segments. Saving cost 5-10 seconds extra each save, i Clocked this time at 49min 42sec, so I need to fit my 3 saves in 18 seconds... which i dont think is possible, but maybe i have some better idead+top notch execution to get in to the 0:49... Lets hope so xD

I think a real TAS can do this in 47 min- with perfect execution etc.

@ Felly. Intresting idea.. but for speed running this is not accepted if you want to get on the site :(. Or do you mean your personal speedrun ( i thought there was a dragon quarter topic about this in casual speedrunning)
