Tricks, Guides and Patcher:

Quote:
Routing: While this changes all the time mainly due to my segmented run requiring more and more Tiny Improvements to save mere seconds, we do have general routing guides in video form created by Professor Broman,
Part One
Part Two
Part Three

Tricks: can generally be found by either going to my Youtube which has most of the skips / glitches OR you can just read through everything in this thread Smiley or just post your question most of us are perfectly happy to give you the answer.

Patcher:

DrMalcom's V1.8.4 to 1.1.0 Patcher.
Quote from 'drMalcom':
Remove the DLC's you don't need from the DLC folder inside the "data/Bl2_1.8.4_to_1.1.0.xdpatch" directory. I don't know which one is Gaige).

Cbenni's 1.7.0 to 1.6.0 to 1.3.1 to 1.1.0 Patcher: This Patcher will roll your game back to versions 1.7 / 1.6 / 1.3.1 &  1.1.0, should you wish to restore your game to the most recent version you can roll forward using the patcher or let stream update the game itself.
Patcher

VERSION 1.7.0 : If you are rolling back from version 1.7.0 you will need to play the game in offline mode otherwise the game will crash when trying to use more recent files (which are downloaded on start up) on an older game version.

Huge thanks to Cbenni and TheRTB for their previous patchers.

Thread title:
So today I decided to give my current route a whirl on stream. It resulted in an in-game time of 5:29:45, single-segment, as Axton:
http://www.twitch.tv/vortale/b/357925384 - part 1
http://www.twitch.tv/vortale/b/357984577 - part 2 (My internet crashed lol)

I'm willing to admit this was less of a proper run and more of a demonstration of my route people could use as reference. A lot of the fights were sloppy as I was growing tired by the end of it and some things didn't go according to plan which may need a fix and backup strats. This run also relies heavily on RNG. But I feel a demo-video is a little more interesting than a huge wall of text going into this game. Apologies if you hate my accent. I do too.
I am hoping for critique and improved routes actually. Something to perhaps get rid of huge chunks of grinding from 10-16 and 21/22-25. There are a couple of things considered but these runs are so huge I haven't tried everything yet. Consider this a first draft. I imagine if this run went completely smooth I would've cut a good 15-20 minutes from in-game time.

For the moment though, I'm going to give Axton a rest and jump onto Zer0. See if he has advantages.

Nice work there Vortale after watching that there are a few things i want to try out myself, mainly I want to know why i had such problems getting grenade boosting to work when you seem to get it every time. (might be the fact i used G-Mods and you use Basic Grenades)

If i do get that sorted ill attempt some major breaking, doubt i would attempt a run but I'm not too bad at coming up with ways to skip things or just improve speed.

#Edit
That badass that wouldn't move for you if you stand where i do in this video he ALWAYS moves (he did 20/20 times i tried)
Very nice work. 5:45:02 (5:29:45 in game) is a good baseline. Sure there were some wonky fights, but you did a lot of it with skill and a lot of good skips.

A few ideas for you:
- I wonder sometimes if this game has any big sequence breaks. EG I wonder about what happens if you force your way, somehow, up to the train before doing Tiny Tina's quest. Or like, forcing your way to the Fridge, or to the bandits you have to kill to get in to Sanctuary. Are there areas that set your mission goals the instant you set foot in them, regardless of how you got there?
- That said - have you considered MORE XP grinding? After the Turtles or Ming Mong, find somewhere else to grind? Or somewhere 5-10? It seems like the run is currently mostly XP bound (and damage output/shield bound). So maybe just concentrating on the tough part for an hour will make the rest go that much faster.
- Your shield is constantly pretty weak/low-level. Maybe it's worth going out of your way to Dr Zed's a few times. Sometimes I bet a white shield will beat your 5+ level-old shield.
- Similarly, I think you should open the red chest at the end of Hero's Pass, just in hope of making The Warrior faster. Hero's Pass has a bunch of 30+ stuff in it. Open all the yellows you run past, maybe, too. If there are easy-to-grab chests in Arid Nexus, maybe grab those too (they dump 28-30 iirc) to hopefully help with Hero's Pass. (Or are the chances too low there?)
Vortale! Nice work!

First off really smart work on the brat bullymong trick, been looking for a way to make intro shorter and that saved some time!  Also at the beginning great way to take advantage of the unexplained lag time on the quest turn in with Hammerlock.  Boom Bewm strats are super solid as well, smat keeping them low health to avoid the psychos. Super smart death exploit after grabbing the power core, kinda kicking myself for not thinking of it. Also nice optimization of the Scooter interaction! Sorry for text wall kinda writing as I go! Got 45 minutes into your run, like where its going! I'ma wait till tomorrow to watch the rest I want to give it my full attention!

Edit: Also thanks Judgy for the advice on the skill planner! And I feel in the same boat as you posting stuff wise Undecided
Just had to come back and say OMG THAT STRONGHOLD SKIP! GENIUS!
I like walls of text so you'll have to forgive me here lol

The lack of good sequence breaks in this game makes me sad. When I was playing as my highest level character to test things, I found out you can grenade jump in 2 areas to avoid both the constructor and badass constructor leading to The Bunker and thought I found something magical. However, I think Gearbox was aware of these easy skips and put compulsory objective triggers inside the doors, meaning you have no choice but to kill both constructors in order to progress. So far the only skips that work are in Bloodshot Stronghold and Hero's Pass, as the objectives are marked further ahead of the areas you can skip, but I would love to find more tricks to trigger objectives early.

As for extra grinding, I've been looking into more potential spots that would give me enough EXP without wasting too much time, which is why I sit at level 20 when going up to the bunker as there aren't any great grinding spots. The reason I go for Splinter's Gang and King Mong is that they can give more EXP than the longer quests available in that area, as optional quests scale to your level in terms of EXP rewards and would be better to do them later, if you do them (I know they scale up at least, not sure about down).
I have a theory that I may want to test when you've activated the fast-travel at Overlook or perhaps after the Wildlife Exploitation Preserve. Laney White in The Fridge does two things: Give a fair amount of EXP and drops The Gub. The Gub is a very powerful pistol with a high ammo capacity and is always corrosive. It could potentially make the entire Bunker portion much quicker, especially the Angel fight which, although takes a long time normally at level 20-21, could be made much faster with a high damage corrosive. While we're on the subject, Moxxi's Bad Touch isn't all that great if you're using a level 18-20 version while running up to the Bunker and if I remember rightly if you buy it just before The Bunker it may be level 23+ as I believe the gun scales with Sanctuary's level rather than your own. If Laney is a good EXP farm this won't be an issue even if The Gub doesn't drop.

Because my route relies on The Badaboom, level 26 I feel is the minimal level required to beat the game as that gun can wreck things 5-6 levels higher than you and I think makes the Warrior a little faster than using level 26 guns to get at it's crit spots. The Badaboom can come in a level 24 and 25 variety, but I feel safer in terms of surviving at level 26, so I would be ignoring the chests at Hero's Pass due to the level of weapons. It is a little dumb relying entirely on RNG when doing Single-Segment right now because if you don't get a Badaboom the only thing you can do is weep and reset after 4 and a half hours of a run going smooth, so I should really have a backup strat ready (other than fighting The Warrior legit). But at this moment in time I feel that rocket launcher makes a run much faster - I think the 25 variety is the best to get since I stop grinding on King Mong at level 25. But these are all feels, this game needs much more work in order to get something perfect going due to the high RNG factor and enemy scaling.

Also, nice find Judgy! I guess I must've been standing in the slightly wrong place before but he generally moved for me. Now that we have a consistent spot it should shave some time off.
Cool, looks like you're way ahead of my thinking on all this.

BTW, other random ideas for skips on the route:
- triggering Boom Bewm without dragging Claptrap out there, or maybe hitting a Captain Flynt trigger, by some grenade jumping; (any time Claptrap says "OPEN", it's likely whatever's next on the other side of that door has a dumb trigger that doesn't care that Claptrap opened the door or not)
- going direct to Frostburn Canyon and Lilith after opening Sanctuary;
- triggering the Bloodshots somehow without going to the Dust;
- triggering Wildlife Preserve without doing the Overlook bit;
- skipping triggers by glitching into the Slab King's place somehow;
- glitching up to the Info Stockade somehow;
- glitching past the Hero's Pass door in Eridium Blight somehow.
And this is the part where you say you tried all that.:) Worth a side note: if any of this kind of thing works, it might also work as soon as the relevant maps open up.

(Man, the lack of saved games in this game makes this all a pain to test, doesn't it.)

And yeah, I think I had in mind Bunker when thinking about more XP grinding. It's such a freakin' long fight. Anything to speed up the preamble and up the damage vs the Bunker and the Angelic guys. Then you gain benefit from a higher level in getting there, and for a little while after, too. (I bet the Bunker itself gives a flat or mostly flat level of XP, regardless of level.) There's a tradeoff to be made there, maybe. Same rough thinking applies to the Thresher and the Warrior too, maybe. It's too bad it so difficult to test all this.

This might be possible there is a hole in the side of the room before flynt (with the vending machine) which you can crawl through it might be able to make him appear without C-T however after the fight you need C-T to open the shutter so time saved will probably result in time lost later... will test in a moment

Been testing out "Wildlife exploitation preserve" for about 12 hours today and it seems the entire place has invisible walls everywhere to prevent you skipping most things (i tried getting on the roof from everywhere possible but no luck) If you didn't have to "use" one of the doors to progress the mission i would have had a way to skip a lot but hey-ho

Only thing i did find was a skip up a waterfall which could save some time because you don't have to kill things while waiting for a door to open        [will add video later]

I found a little trick though I doubt it's really going to be useful.

The timing is pretty tight to do it.
Have a Tediore Rocket Launcher, shoot with it till it reloads/is thrown, just when it's thrown switch to another weapon and then switch back, then you throw it again and it wastes no ammo. You can keep doing it.
EDIT: Using a melee attack instead of weapon switching makes it a lot easier to keep up.
Doesn't seem to work with a Shotgun (Or it would be a super tiny timeframe to make it work) because you equip a new one like instantly.

Right where to begin lol.....

First off (as its first in the game) Some things on Southern Shelf

Boom-Bewm Early: While it's possible to get into BB's area early nothing will happen as you can see in this video i can use the turrent but it will not break the gate, the same gate also has a massive invisble wall and i dont think a grenade jump would be possible untop of the curved metal frames, in the same video i also test to see if running back to the elevator will activate the bosses but it doesn't. (FYI: At this point Claptrap was on the other side of the bridge)

Flynt Early (Without Claptrap): Again it is possible to get into the area before claptrap does anything for you but Flynt himself is not even in the game world until claptrap says the line "Come on out Flynt your claptrap unit has returned" This was tested at every stage of clap traps advancement (being attacked, Freed, escorted to base of elevator and all the way
(sorry about the Crap fighting part in the middle was trying to see if claptrap would move if i killed some people from where i was .... should have cut it out)

S-Shelf Door hop / Skip: After sorting out Vortale's door problem i went further and came up with method to make it even quicker (note in the video halfway up the pipe its safe to go to the right and run up the snow you don't need to stay on the pipe)

W.E.P Waterfall Skip: This basically stops you having to wait for the door to open (yes the open one im looking at in the start of the video :P) could save some time however behind that door is the ammo vendorwould be a case of whether you have enough ammo or not.

More Coming Soon Tongue

#Edit love that rocket launcher glitch TheVoid seeing as the game is nearly all luck with drops knowing glitchs for different weapon types is all good Smiley
So quick glitch question.

Would using any of the infinite skill point glitches be considered legit or not?  It is a glitch but it involves using an invite to another online game.

Thoughts???

Nice, Judgy. And nice, TheVoid. Game is bending like wood, splinters starting to show... heh. Sorry to hear the Claptrap skipping didn't work.

Vortale, an idea for ya: there's a red chest at the end of Hero's Pass you can farm. But you have to do it a certain way.

You enter Vault of the Warrior but then immediately save and quit, and come back in. Then, go back into Hero's Pass, open the chest again, take any stuff, then go back into Vault of the Warrior and save and quit again. Rinse, repeat.

The save point at the end of Hero's Pass will take you back to the beginning if you save and quit there. But the one in Vault of the Warrior works all right. Also note that there's no "up" button on the elevator in Vault of the Warrior. That's a one-way trip down.

For Vortale:

You need to do a crouch jump onto the lower section and while holding crouch go slighty right of the center (shaking the mouse makes it easier to get through at one point) then carry on as normal once through 1 Nade saved Wink

Just found

Out of Bounds Goes In Bounds:

In Vortale's stream above at around 1:23:30 he starts explain what he would do if he had an extra grenade when he says this he is on a X-section of two walls, in my video i run along the edge of one of these walls to jump across to the tower and break in to the map again.

Judgy, you are a beast! It's amazing the little things you can miss when running around in that void. I was trying to figure out for the longest time how to cut a grenade from the OOB in Bloodshot Stronghold so I'd only need 4 to get there within the fastest time. To add to it, the fact that you found a way back in bounds will mean we no longer have to wait forever for the drop, or attempt to save a grenade to kill yourself. This should effectively save a ton of time here. I'd also like to add that with the exception of early Boom-Bewm, all 3 of the other skips found are useful.

At some point during the week I will attempt an actual run instead of a demonstration. Providing I don't suck, we'll see how much time we manage to shave off. I'll be attempting to see about Laney in the mean time. Gotta get under that 5 hour in-game mark!

EDIT: Oh, I forgot to ask - how does the infinite skill point glitch work exactly? I'm curious as I've never heard of this, although I fear it may be illegal in a run due to requiring invites.

I do need to add something on the OoB > IB jump to the tower you need to drop down again on to the lower section of wall if you try run from the higher part you always drop too far and die....

BUT WAIT !! DERES!!!! MORE!!! lol (Scary movie quote)

This one is risky as hell but clearly possible with good timing and practice (i got it about 5/10 tries)

- triggering Boom Bewm without dragging Claptrap out there, or maybe hitting a Captain Flynt trigger, by some grenade jumping; (any time Claptrap says "OPEN", it's likely whatever's next on the other side of that door has a dumb trigger that doesn't care that Claptrap opened the door or not) Sadly both of these fights are triggered using either trapclap or a radio message AFTER claptrap does something.

- going direct to Frostburn Canyon and Lilith after opening Sanctuary; (I'm not saying its impossible) Due to the leveling required to be able to use the SMG within FBC and the fact your character is too weakbefore then anyway certain things need to be done to get exp quickly BEFORE entering FBC

- triggering the Bloodshots somehow without going to the Dust I tried for around 4 hours to get into this place before i got the Big ... Jeep ... thing... the closest i got was using a runner from scooters catch a ride and skidding into the door so that my character got out through the door however it either sends you flying upwards or teleports you back the other side of the runner. (theres also a fuck-off sized invisible wall over the top of the walls too.

Other things you suggested I will test soon I believe the Slab (Brick) skip will be impossible as speaking to him is triggered by a cutscene which is in-turn triggered by the end of the fighting so without that fight im not sure he would do anything even if you got to him however all things must be tested so they will be. (^_^)

Just watched through this.  For a rough attempt, this was pretty great.  Obviously there are a lot of patches that need to be worked out, but you're well on your way.  The only way to smooth out leveling would be to pick up more side missions along the way, but you would be hard pressed to find anything really worth the time.  Rakkaholics Anonymous is quick, nets you 4k exp, and you get a decent weapon out of it.  Defend the Slab Tower has you killing a lot of loaders with a turret, followed by a lot of badass loaders that aren't paying attention to you.  You can keep restarting this mission to rack up a lot of kill exp and drops, especially with Slab support, then let the last loader destroy the supply crate to fail the mission.  If not that, then you could at least turn in Rocko's Modern Strife on the way out of the Slab area, since that nets you some exp and money.  You can do Home Movies and Written by the Victor while waiting to copy Jack's voice in Opportunity.  You can really quickly find Kai's body in Sawtooth to complete The Chosen One.  All of these are quick ways to get a little bit of exp before you start leveling in the Eridium Blight, which will make King Mong farming faster.  You'll miss out a bit on some of his drops, but you'll probably save money in the end.

I really doubt anyone will be faster than the Soldier, though the Mecromancer's Deathtrap starts to surpass the Scorpio Turret fairly quickly.  Also, there is a ~30 min chunk missing from your stream.  It's between Farming King Mong and doing the majority of Sawtooth Cauldron.

If anything, this makes me excited to see a quality segmented run.  Errors aside, you can also manipulate great drops and probably shave off at least 30 mins.
Judgy, man, nice work. Keep it up, dude.

Maybe there's a way to test Frostburn early, easily, via multiplayer games? (I've never tried.) Also, I'm not 100% convinced the Bloodshots aren't glitchable. I just tried for a while. (Got my car up on the fence, killed a couple of guys inside [shrug]) But, man, that map maker really locked that place up pretty tight. There are invisible walls everywhere. If there's ever a map editor, we might find a way in that way.

There are a lot of hallmarks of the devs thinking about these things beforehand. The invisible walls, the way the triggers are generally set up, etc.

Oh, and other idea: glitch the Death Wall?
Borderlands 2 Glitch Hunter/ router.
Thanks for the encouragement (^_^)

Yeah i manged to get a car proped up so i could kill some but the invisible wall is so tall that i don't think it could be done, there was one possibility that involved taking a car round the right hand side to where the fence ends get it so that it was over the edge of the cliff and the front was past the fence, getting in the gunner seat, moving to the front and exiting on the other side but balancing the car was near impossible.

Quote from usernameguy:
glitch the Death Wall?

i take it your meaning the one in thousand cuts? it might be possible depending upon things like whether its is infact a "death wall" or a "fuck loads of damage wall" and there are a few things i wanted to try with it anyway so yeah its getting tested Smiley
Vortale, the glitch works by getting an invite from another player, then using an alternate controller switching between two characters.  Pushing Y (i'm on xbox) and selecting one repeating selecting another character.  After a few rounds of this you load one of these characters and they will have like 1000 skill points.  However, I'd agree that it sounds against the rules but I thought, hey why not just run it by everyone and see what they think.

Here is a link to the video I found describing it for everyone to check out and give opinions on.

So I've been thinking that the best way to free up the XP bound problem for this run is to just increase damage output.  The Void gave me an idea to re-test a glitch that happened to me release week and it still works. Basically you can make every weapon in the game have persistent infinite ammo, even rocket launchers, with no need to reload.  I thought they'd have patched it, I was wrong. Here is video!

Edit 2: skip to the middle for less rambling.

Edit: Let me know what you think,  this glitch is pretty powerful, and might make it a good idea to split the speedrunst to glitched and glitchless perhaps.  I ran through A Dam Fine Rescue until the start of Where Angels Fear To Tread, in just over 2 hours and it was VERY sloppy, sure it could have been done in 1:30 or less with some tweaking.

Wow. Very nice, Prof.

Of course it's fair. Smiley A classic FPS run glitch. Other thoughts:
1) The value is half in not having reloading. Fast weapons with small magazines and "x4" weapons will be nice with this. (A lot of Gearbox's weapon design revolves around having powerful shots, but then having to reload too much, for 10 secs a reload. This completely undoes that.)
2) Level is still important, but only to meet the minimum requirement to equip things. So yeah, it's like you can run at -3 to -5 levels.
3) It's not too hard to replicate quickly after saving and reloading, I think. You just need to keep your inventory full most of the time. You'll carry a triggering rocket launcher (or x3/x4 shotgun) around just to do this.
4) Suddenly the Badaboom is really important.

EDIT: can you trigger off the buyback? If so, just keep your inventory full always. Then sell a gun, use the buyback to trigger the bug, and go on your way with full inventory again.

Damn Prof that glitch will be useful as hell for the Warrior fight 0_0 not to mention Areas of long duration where ammo needs to be conserved otherwise your ending up back and forth to ammo machines

#Edit as for the Skill Point glitch the second you attempt it I'm guessing the run goes from being solo to being a co-op run despite whether play 2 continues playing or not (but I'd ask people who set the rules on what classifies as Solo or Co-op runs)

Btw thanks for the shout-out in the video but most if not all credit needs to go to Vortale on this without him doing his demo run a lot of the fire that's spreading around this game would not have caught (^_^)

For Anyone Intrested who wasn't watching Vortales stream tonight Vortale, ProfessorBroman, FlameDragon, Myself and others where exploring the legitimacy of certain glitches / skips /and new routing It seemed (atleast from my point of view) that Vortale had a far easier time getting through areas and killing bosses With the help of ProfessorBroman's Infinite ammo Glitch, which is proving priceless currently.
As I said previously the routing has changed due to the Glitch making Rocket launchers VERY O.P!!! therefore certain grinding has been removed and replaced with other later detours.

ProfessorBroman was testing out Gunzerker Glitching trying to get ammo glitch + damage glitch to work however as of yet there's been no confirmation on whether or not the damage glitch has been patched. If we get this to work the game gets destroyed basically.

Skips discovered were used to good effect shaving some time from previous routes, however many new ideas have been spawned from watching the run and from conversations between each of us, these will be tested and the results of which will be posted soon.

The result of Vortale's "Test" stream was a Sub 5 hour of 4:59:54 shaving near 30 mins off with a spontaneous route and much room for improvement in a serious run.
