Tricks, Guides and Patcher:

Quote:
Routing: While this changes all the time mainly due to my segmented run requiring more and more Tiny Improvements to save mere seconds, we do have general routing guides in video form created by Professor Broman,
Part One
Part Two
Part Three

Tricks: can generally be found by either going to my Youtube which has most of the skips / glitches OR you can just read through everything in this thread Smiley or just post your question most of us are perfectly happy to give you the answer.

Patcher:

DrMalcom's V1.8.4 to 1.1.0 Patcher.
Quote from 'drMalcom':
Remove the DLC's you don't need from the DLC folder inside the "data/Bl2_1.8.4_to_1.1.0.xdpatch" directory. I don't know which one is Gaige).

Cbenni's 1.7.0 to 1.6.0 to 1.3.1 to 1.1.0 Patcher: This Patcher will roll your game back to versions 1.7 / 1.6 / 1.3.1 &  1.1.0, should you wish to restore your game to the most recent version you can roll forward using the patcher or let stream update the game itself.
Patcher

VERSION 1.7.0 : If you are rolling back from version 1.7.0 you will need to play the game in offline mode otherwise the game will crash when trying to use more recent files (which are downloaded on start up) on an older game version.

Huge thanks to Cbenni and TheRTB for their previous patchers.

Assassin should definitely be considered for the insane crit talent, though.  It took us literally something like an hour to beat the big ship boss in playthrough 2, whereas I've heard Assassins do it in MINUTES with that talent.

And here was me thinking Sins had a useless class skill and hated using him lol but then again I!!! don't have to use him so its not my problem Wink however it does bring up a problem for solo being that other characters may move faster but if they spend 4~5 times the amount of time on a boss what are you saving? 0_o

Yeah, it's tricky.  Lots to think about for sure.  It was a tough decision to choose the combo for my 1->50 run, and that was of course waaaaay less precise than the eventual speedrun will be.  I wish everyone luck.  Waiting for DLC like you said is most likely what I will be doing there I think Sad
props on the level cap run. I still haven't done it in a casual playthrough. Any significant strats or tricks used during the run or just playing through?

Thanks man Smiley

Not too many things that would carry over to speedrun planning that I can think of.  The Siren's instant rez ability gives you a lot of DPS up-time because you can dps big enemies that you wouldn't get a swind on without worrying too much, since Siren can always snipe rez.  But like I said earlier I'm not sure that I would play zerker again if I was speedrunning.  It was the safe choice for a long run to go tank+healer style but I doubt it would end up being ideal.  Mostly just using the teleport to vehicle function in coop which is pretty obvious haha.  There was much we could improve on, and my partner was not even remotely experienced in speedrunning in general (has maybe done 2.5 hours in his life, on Diablo, and no other games), but I'm happy we were able to stay awake and keep grinding forward without losing our minds Smiley

While testing some stuff out I've noticed something that I don't like, they seem to have nerfed grenade boosting that or i'm not doing it right (the same way as in BL)

This annoys me as simple invisible wall getting-overing (nice term huh!?) is now harder / impossible and it seems an idea I was having to throw your character a long distance from a very high position cannot be done either Sad

Has anyone else been able to pull off grenade jumps? or am I being a tard? I blame differential explository delay cords!!!!!! .... fuse timers.... *cough*

Hey All,

I was playing around with this game for a short time and I wanted to share a glitch I found which would be useful speedrunwise.

The glitch uses the Berserk ability from the Grunzerker and the glitch makes your offhand weapon have the same damage then your main weapon. So the most useful way I found to abuse this is have a rocketlauncher in your mainhand (right hand) and every bullet of your offhand will do the same damage as the rocketlauncher.

For the glitch to work following conditions have to be met:
- Offhand weapon must have an element (Fire/Electro/Explosion/etc...)
- Offhand weapon must have a firerate below 5.0(*)

*Tested it only up to a firerate of 4.5 but every weapon with 5.0 or above didnt work, dont really know the reason.

What is also to note is that the offhands Element is still in use as well as the kind of weapon it is. That means if you have an enemy which is weak against Fire and Pistols or any other element / weaponkind then he will take extra dmg from it as well (Same for resistance ofc).

Here a small fight against BadMaw, I am using the pistol from Flynt which should do only 20 firedmg.

I also tested around with skipping ahead of the quest chain and was able to do so at several locations, however it didnt bear any fruit since the game didnt advance the quest chain and nothing happend or triggered (For example I was able to get into the Warriors Vault early but FireHawk is not there and nothing happens).

I wont do to much with this game, I was just bored and was interested if I could find anything for this game. Hope it will help someone who picks up this game.

If you have any questions please let me know I'd gladly help you out.
Maybe also worth mentioning is that in a patch sometime ago they added the option to disable Badass Ranks by pressing Q in its menu.

Also, you can get a boost from a grenade by not equipping a Grenade Mod and thus just using the default grenade.
Hey all.

I'm completely new to speedrunning, but I've been playing a good bit of borderlands 2 on both PC and xbox and figured I'd give it a go. I notice there's no logged record for this game on the archive list.  Does this mean that there is probably still a record, but it just isn't on the site?  I'm also curious as to if there are any rules relating to a speedrun for a specific game or if the community makes them up. For instance, would I be able to choose to do a run of just the first playthrough or of 1-50 on a solo character?

Lot's of questions. But I am really excited to give this a go once I figure out what direction I need to move in. Thanks.

There might be some speedrun record out there, and even if--you'd have to search google, youtube, or whatever to find it. SDA has a set of rules which apply to all games in general, with disregard to anyone's opinion. Special rules may apply on a game-to-game basis (eg. stuff like you can't use the in-game timer because it was proven inconsistent), but those are extremely rare and don't really prevent you from doing whatever in-game. The best thing to do is to simply read SDA's FAQ page--you'll find answers for most, if not all your questions in there. The two categories I can think of right now that would be accepted at SDA are ng (pt1, from a fresh file) and ng+ (pt2.5, I guess, where you basically start with an already fully geared up, maxed out character), so no power leveling runs for you, sorry.

Thanks for the tips!

I've now read the FAQ, submission requirements, etc.  I'm thinking a NG+ run would be difficult to regulate because there's no way to know for sure if a player is starting with hacked items or not. So it looks like a clean start played until completion of playthrough 1 makes the most sense to me. Also, I'm still working out my own plans for exploits/glitches such as flesh stick which has sense been patched. Not sure if the PC version can remove patches on steam, but if not then the 360 version seems like the way to go.

In list form, here's what I'm working with now. Please let me know if anybody thinks these guidelines should be adjusted.

-Clean start.
-up until the player interacts with the item at the end of the mission Talon of God during playthrough 1
-Badass ranks need to be disabled
-Gearbox starting weapons need to be dropped
-DLC is permitted
-No use of golden keys

Any thoughts?
Borderlands 2 Glitch Hunter/ router.
as far as Pc goes a "Hardcopy" of the game may be able to be used to maintain certain glitches however, A steam  copy will always force you to update to the latest version before you can play the game.

Personally i think the guidelines you have there are fine however there may be a problem with your game version and DLC permitted AKA be careful that using the DLC doesnt force your game to update past a point where glitches you require become patched.

I haven't really done much work with BL2 recently so I'm not sure at which update glitches become patched (sorry)

Yeah, what Judgy said. You can always torrent an earlier version of the game--it's not technically pirating if you bought the game, if you care about that.

Timing ends once you lose control over the character. So even if eg. you already killed the last boss and further input is pointless but you still can move around, it does count towards the final time.

Badass bonuses don't have to be disabled--you'd simply have to start from a completely fresh file.

Preorder gear is ok, so are the golden keys you start out with by default (I think it was just one).

About the DLCs--is there any benefit to using them, just to complete the main story line? If not, then don't--it might end up being required of you to also complete the main quests from the DLC you end up using in such case (eg. see the diablo 2 run--it runs all the way to the end of the expansion, not just the vanilla quest line). If you really want to use some DLC then ask an admin about that; this is one of those slippery-slope, game-by-game cases I mentioned earlier and they have the only and final say about this stuff.
I've been working out routes on this game since November (extremely slowly mind you, haven't found much IRL time). I've managed Normal mode with an in-game SS time of 7h 49m as Axton, but this can be improved upon greatly and I'm still tweeking the route. I also need to do full runs as the other 3 classes.

The rules I play under are the same rules stated here, but there might be a problem with DLCs. Yes, you can throw away Gearbox starting weapons, but the Vault Hunter's Relic - which increase rare drops by 5% - cannot be dropped and you can only acquire it by pre-ordering or having the Mechromancer DLC. Although my runs only have EXP farming, the fact that your drop rate for powerful items increase could potentially make a run much better. I don't know if you'll have to complete the DLC storylines, as the Mechromancer adds no extra quests, just an extra (and overpowered lol) class.

As far as patches go, I haven't seen too much damage done to my run as a result of patches, with the exception of Wilhelm who has been given a fairly big HP buff but he's still pretty easy. I'm going to keep running this game, but I may wait until the final DLC before making something completely official with it.
My point with the DLC was that it could be optional for some xp grinding or something, but not required as part of the run.  That way makes the most sense to me, unless there's a rule to the contrary. I likely won't even touch them, but if somebody finds a way to somehow complete the vanilla story faster through some weird detour in the DLC, that should be permitted. At least that's my argument for it. But I bring it here to be corrected if I'm in the wrong or whatever Smiley

The 5% loot relic is an interesting issue though, I hadn't thought of that. Can it still be unequipped? I'll have to try next time I log on. Maybe there's something to be said about trying to start with as many advantages a new solo character can possibly have?

I think starting a fresh badass rank on xbox is probably a lot easier than doing it on steam. I was thinking disabling them entirely bypasses the issue, though I suppose you also don't get the perks of earning the first couple badass ranks on a new profile.

I've also had the most success with Axton. His movement speed kill perk and survivability with his turret seem like the way to go.
I found the Relic can be unequipped. I feel a bit dumb, but for some reason I didn't think it was possible until you got another Relic to replace it. Still, you're left with a Relic which can be sold (for a pitiful amount) or take up backpack space.

Axton is great for surviving and gaining that EXP. His sentry draws agro and does a fair amount of damage if you're going down the Guerrilla tree (which you may want to for Onslaught). Throwing it out in patches of enemies as you run through can help with the tedious task of grinding.
Zer0 on the other hand has his advantages. His massive crit damage and B0re can make short(er) work of Bunker and Warrior, which are both very long fights (at least on my current route). I will be running Zer0 fully just to see how much of an advantage he may gain on those bosses and if it's enough to consider changing class.
Salvador, although he has early speed buffs, is a much harder run. He has no real form of drawing away agro, so he'd be relying a lot more on Second Winding or killing plenty of people on his route instead of ignoring them.
Maya, yeah, I think only if you're playing co-op there should be one Maya. I've only been planning single player.

When it comes to badass ranks, I find myself earning 50's/100's on the run but they really wouldn't offer great advantages at that point from a fresh badass rank. Personally I prefer mashing J then hitting Q as soon as a run starts as I'll be going in there anyway to drop Gearbox gear. I also like the badass rank I currently have and would rather not get rid of it lol
Hey guys, just jumping in here, I've found quite a few jumping routes through levels that would save a ton of time, and quite a few OOB spots (for instance, a useful one in the Wilderness Preserve, and another one in the place from which you rescue Roland. If anyone is interesting in checking these out, I don't think I have the time to put a real run together, but would be interested in helping out on research and such.

For an example of a jumping route: using ennervate, you can jump from the bottom of the Wilderness Preserve buildings to the top (I'm still testing how to get into the arena where you fight Bloodwing), and I think it could be useful for tracking across the top of the level, and dropping in just before the building where you fight Bloodwing.
Make your mark on the world.
Would it be safe to say that Rocket Launchers are good tools for speed running this game against bosses?

99% of the time, they usually end the fight within at most a minute for me. Of course this would depend on the damage and element, but I'm just letting this out there.
I'd be interested in these jumping routes and OOB spots. The only issue would be if it caused you to miss any objective triggers. This game makes it rather difficult to sequence break and passing by very minor objectives can cause the game to not continue. An example is the door going into Hero's Pass. When the doors open you have more than enough time to reach the trigger to the next area, but if you don't let Claptrap finish his prolonged "No", the objective won't tick off and Mordecai and Brick won't spawn in Hero's Pass. In fact, missing this objective by accident will force you to go back and wait for the door to open a second time, and whoa boy does claptrap not like to shut up.

Rocket Launchers are awesome on almost all bosses and are almost guaranteed to grant you a Second Wind on nearby enemies. The only exception I can think of currently would be The Bunker and The Warrior. Although rockets still do a lovely amount of damage to them, their HP is still incredibly high and you'd rather have high fire-rate weapons going into their crit spots than rockets, as you are very limited.
Okay, the first OOB spot (I'm not at my home PC atm, so I can't find a reference for the other one) is in... the area where you rescue Roland (Bloodshot Stronghold?). We all know and love that big circular room  with the whirlpool in the middle and the miniboss at the top. In the hallway before that, jump on the spawn point thing, then on its antenna. Put your back to the closest wall, you'll see a pipe or girder perpendicular to yourself. If you sprint jump from the antenna, you can land here.

Boom, OOB. Let me know if that doesn't make sense.
Make your mark on the world.
Makes sense. Still, that is just two bosses. There are still probably better alternatives, I'm just letting an idea out there.
Don't forget that you can plan a couple spots in the run based on blue quest rewards. There are certain blue rewards which seem to spawn elemental stuff more often than others, and you may be able to cheese a couple of these to get acid for Bunker, and... whatever the hell you'd use against the Warrior... perhaps a big chain gun?

Okay, FlowState here. Sorry for the double post, but I forgot I couldn't edit the 'anonymous' posts. Just curious if anyone else was keeping an eye out for the possibility of a co-op run. There are a ton of benefits, and I was able to lose about 2 minutes on the Flynt quest by having a second player, mainly by leapfrogging trigger points.

Another example of this is actually a decent spot for grinding. The race you do in Torgue's DLC (if DLCs are allowed) can be cheesed if you have two players leapfrog each other for the checkpoints. The Torgue currency is valuable, and the EXP is pretty huge, iirc. If you ran one player as a zero, you could conceivably start a run this way, if you worked out a route to avoid enemies on the way.

Crap... I have all these notes I've been wanting to get feedback on:

If you run it with the 'Zerker, you could conceivably use the 'Fistful of Hurt' skill to knock enemies off the stage into the killzone for quick boss kills or xp farming. This should also be researched for co-op runs where you could duel and knock the other player over a boundary.

Can't remember off the top of my head, but I'm sure there is at least one boss with an overpowered shield. It would likely be faster to just run the 'Animal Rights' sidequest and get the sniper rifle that bypasses shields.

If you know you're going to need to grind, do the Creature Slaughter Dome round 5 and get that beastly rocket launcher. Don't take the last round till you're leveled appropriately, and you will be able to tell how powerful the launcher will be.

'Rakkaholics Anonymous' has a 50/50 shot of giving you a corrosive gun that heals you by the damage you are doing. Could be brilliant against bunker.

'Demon Hunter' quest gives you a massive sniper rifle akin to the Elephant Gun from BL1. Maybe useful against the Warrior or Bunker.

Also, found this gem online:

The Chosen one.

Location: Speak to Marcus after “Where Angels Fear to Tread.”
Gives: “Evil Smasher,” an odd assault riffle that I don’t quite understand. All I know that it shoots high velocity explosive rounds. Give it a try.
Anon edit:
Every reload the Evil Smasher has a chance to get a stat boost to all stats, meaning that it fires faster, hits harder, and has a much higher ammo capacity. This effect is shown by a small explosive blast from the gun and a corresponding noise.
Note: Switching weapons cancels the effect, but it has been reported that the effect can bleed over to your other guns as long as you have it equipped.
Furthermore, if you begin to swap your weapon AND open the menu screens (Inventory, Skills, etc.) as soon as the effect occurs, you can swap out the Evil Smasher for any other weapon. From then on, so long as you don't reload, you'll keep the damage increase on every gun. This effect will be kept through Fast-Travels and death, and only disappear (assuming you avoid reloading) when you reload a save. Use it with the Vladof Infinity for maximum effect.

Hey there,

just my opinion on coop. I found that you have really big benefits from running alone actually. To a point where co-op even with all that neat things you can do might be slower. That is because you can skip ahead in so many areas/quest with save&quit.
It saves so much time during the whole run... for example at the very beginning, when you got your first gun claptrap opens the door, as soon as you see the autosave you can save quit load and he already opened the 2nd door. You skipped dialog and the door opening etc. Sometimes you can skip whole fights with it too...
The other thing is boss grinding with 2 people is really annoying since it takes a long time to make the other dude rejoin the game all the time.

Also if you can use the glitch which I found where you do as much damage as the rocket launcher with a normal weapon you level really fast, so that the xp tricks you can do in coop dont fall into weight as much.
Anyway I heared that they actually fixed that glitch in the newest version so, if you want to run on the newest version that might change things.

I think coop could be faster if you didnt have to be in the same game all the time, for example if the one continues the quest chain while the other one grinds a boss for levels and rejoins at the point the first one is to low level to continue etc. However that is most likely not accepted as a coop speedrun, since you are not playing together all the time : P.

Anyway gl with the game guys.
Hey!
Getting read to start a few practice runs on this soon, All the strats here are pretty awesome.  I've found that using the Mecromancer has been especially useful during any missions where you might want to keep moving but have to clear out an area to keep going.  Example would be anytime you have to protect or clear for claptrap during Best Minion Ever.  This is a benefit that could be received with Anton's turret as well. Just thought I'd mention the usefulness, for anyone looking to drop times between triggers on missions.
So the OOB in the Bloodshot stronghold could be super useful for skipping the mini-boss in that room.  He's not a trigger in the quest and going OOB to avoid him wouldn't mess you even if the door stayed closed over because there is a fast travel at the end of the quest.  That being said, I spent a good hour today trying to work that angle and came up with nothing.  There are some ledges around the OOB Satan's Suckhole  but finding a route through them has been difficult.  If anyone else is has gotten this figured out let me know.

Also I've been running (SS) start through the W4R-D3N fight (and then dying a lot!).  First run I got there at lvl 9 and obviously way to low to handle it, I've been thinking about the best ways to quickly get some exp to get to lvl 11-12 before  taking that freaking trash pile on.  Also IMO the Mecromancer's anarchy skill is perfectly suited to running a quick solo because even when under leveled you can dish out enough punishment to take down enemies due to increased damage output.

Anyone else attempting a SS right now? If so lets trade ideas on routing and whatnot.

Keep being awesome!
Borderlands 2 Glitch Hunter/ router.
Just a quick thing if your wanting to plan out the order your going to spend skill points you can use this http://www.borderlands2.com/us/skilltree/mechromancer.html it gives you 46 skill points and will show you what level you need to be to get your desired result.

For example if i wanted the "Rational anarcist" skill and I simply bulldoze straight to it i need to be level 21 before i can purchase it however, if i wanted to max-out the "Cooking up trouble" skill from the BFF skill tree before i get R.A id need to be level 26 before i can do this.

could be useful if you want different skills from different trees or just so you don't have to load the game up each time you wanna look (^_^)

Still planning/breaking currently I've not really posted anything as I seem to be finding things that -- 1: other people are finding / posting before me or -- 2: What looks like a hopeful skip/glitch turns out to be worthless ¬_¬
