King n00b!
There was another speedrun around here, but I can't seem to find it and have heard nothing about it.

Going to run the game on easy, then go from there. Going to try to do it on every difficulty.

This is the original thread: http://speeddemosarchive.com/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=consoles_newer;action=display;num=1187733768;start=0

And here are some videos from Cauldrath's run: http://hosted.filefront.com/Cauldrath/2061656

Unfortunately, most of the run is already deleted.
Yes, a Masterchief riding a coffee table.
What happened to this run then. I watched it on youtube and it looked great.

Yeah, I'm actually a bit curious myself - Cauldrath, did you ever get it submitted?  If so, where is it in the queue?

BTW, Cauldrath's on XBox 360. We don't have an official PC run attempt.  There are enough differences that I think it deserves its own category.

Also, Apathy: be sure to check out the Wiki we made.  It's in my sig.  Full of useful route planning, death warps, & audio skips.  That's all there is to this speed run in the end.  There are not many sequence breaks (the only one I can think of off the top of my head is at the end of Welcome to Rapture).

EDIT: some notes on your run:
- Very nice in general - you've clearly thought this through
- You want to go to the RIGHT down the stairs to the bathysphere, not the left.  That way you save a second or two by not having to clear the door.
- You can radio skip "Find a weapon" with "Smile for the camera" (*slightly* faster if you're quick, I think); also, position yourself between the stairs and the wrench and spin around once you have the wrench, it's a bit faster.
- You can do the battle with the two splicers after the plane wreck a bit faster - see the Wiki.
- You can get the gun on the run out of the baby crib, right past the female splicer
- In the ending battle sequence, you can kill the splicer already there after hitting the trigger and before the others show up; Cauldrath did this battle particularly well from an out-of-the-way place.
- There's a sequence break at the end that lets you skip Ryan's speech.  It's described in the Wiki.

I loved this game and the run is really well done definatly a favourite of mine. Needs to get sorted so everyone can enjoy.

Thanks alot Smiley

I'm going to redo the two segments, since it's not all that far into the game anyway..

The only two qualities I'm going to do is Normal/medium and High.. Also only going to use Xvid to compress.

If I'm required to use H.264, or any other qualities, please let me know so I can say to hell with it before I get too far into it.

I'm 100% coder retarded. I spent about an hour looking through the faqs on all the shit you need to do for the other compression methods.. I got nowhere fast and ended up with a big fucking headache.
As far as I know, you don't NEED to submit in H264.  It says nothing about that here:
http://speeddemosarchive.com/submit.html

I imagine the staff is more than capable of recoding stuff.

I'd contact Mike, though, just to be sure.  And now, before you start your run, so you know what you're getting into.
King n00b!
Ok, after endless hours of searching and headaches.. I finally found a program that will convert it from avi to mp4 without any scripts.
When I get some sleep, I'm going to redo the two segments with the better routes.

I have no solution, but i admire the problem.
Using "some program" to convert your avi video ( which is already encoded, thus has lost quality ) to mp4 won't help. I guess you have no other choice than to go through all the submission FAQ.

3 alternatives:

1. Connect your PC to a DVD recorder, encoding from there is much easier, because you can use anri-chan. Also, if even that doesn't work, you can simply send the DVDs to nate
2. Burn your uncompressed (Fraps-?) recordings to DVDs and send them in.
3. Bend your knees and beg for help in the tech forum Wink

Anyways, i'd love to see a final Bioshock run on SDA.

Ok, after several hours of fucking around with everything and crying to Kibumbi to baby me through it all, I think I got it all figured out.. I'll start pumping out segments in a bit here.. Once I do one last test.

New segment 1 is uploading. Would highly appreciate it if someone would download and comment on it.. It's the HQ version and is about 77 megs. It's rar'd up because the ftp space I'm using doesn't seem to like mp4 files :/

About 10 minutes after this post, it should be done uploading

King n00b!
Segment 2 is up.

the part where you get the lightning plasmid.. My screen does the weird glitch before falling over the railing everytime I recorded it.. which was a lot.. Instead of killing everyone, I just zapped them and tried to run by.. That would be the reason everyone and there mother is shooting me at the end.

I can't access any menus when the bigdaddy and little sister get introduced.. I couldn't jump over any railing either.. I couldn't even jump on that spot.

If anyone thinks it could be better, or needs some polishing, than let me know. Will be happy to redo.

One last thing.. As for the radio skip.. I have to adjust my DPI on my mouse because Bioshock in game and in menu seems to be way the fuck off. If I have it on the dpi I play with, it wont even move in the menu.. If I have it on what I use in the menu, my screen would do about 8 360's in a matter of 2 seconds.. I would be losing time if I went through the menus for anything.
Segment 1:  Nice job.  Didn't see anything to improve (except if moving sidewards isn't as fast as moving forwards, I forget.  If it is, you shouldn't look at the plane go down.)

Segment 2: yeah, first of all, the skip tricks at the Footlight Theater only work on the XBox 360 - on the PC they shutdown the UI for audio play.  So no sweat.

And yeah, Cauldrath pretty much skipped any fight he could.  He was big about conserving his ammo and eve, too, which is why he ends up using so much Telekinesis - it's cheap.

Nice clean fighting!  That's one of the biggest tricks here.

You could do the 2nd battle with the two splicers a *bit* quicker.  The fight is look activated - it starts when you enter the one side of the room then look back to the hallway.  But it's up to you whether or not getting all the eve and health lying around is worth the time.

You don't even need to shock the female splicer at the crib.  Just run by the left side of the crib and grab.  You'll get shot once or twice doing this.  Doesn't really matter tho.

The one thing you really need to fix in segment two is the trap skip at the end.  The trick is documented here:
http://scratchpad.wikia.com/wiki/Welcome_To_Rapture#Footlight_Theater_to_Medical

You can see Cauldrath using the trick, at the end of this video here:

I saw that trick at the end when you first posted about it, but I didn't catch the fact that the last bit of radio stuff didn't play.. Yes, I'll def be redoing this seg.

For the very first splicer you encounter that atlas tells you to zap and whack.. The eve hype that I get is pretty much in the way and I grab it fast enough .. At least I think anyway..

Oh, as far as looking at the plane.. I could have gone backwards and still would have went just as fast.. It doesn't seem to matter which way you're going.. As long as you're going.

There's a slightly faster way to do this.  You enter the two-sided room, and back down the stairs to the right until you see the splicer spawn.  Then immediately go to the other side of the room where he's waiting.

This works faster because the splicer spawn is on a look-activated trigger.  There are several of these in the game. They work kinda like the research camera, minus the camera and the snapshot.  In this case, I think you have to have the hallway door visible and centered, like with a research camera subject.

BTW that's the second splicer you kill.  The first you kill with the wrench, just before ElectroBolt.

Ok, the new seg 2 med and high quality is up. Old links should work, I just uploaded the new ones over the old ones.

I wasn't trying to zap the splicer at 4:55, I just hit the button on accident.

I was also able to jump over a railing finally :p It was near the end.
Ooo, sexy new forums.

Yeah, segment 2 looks good now to me.  I can't think of much else to speed that up.  Nice execution in general. Smiley

After watching those couple segments, I just remembered how much I love this game :D. You're doing a good job on the run so far. It will get more interesting for sure when you progress further. Good luck with the run! I hope you get it done since I have no idea what happened to the other Bioshock run.

Ok, segment 3 is up..

Anytime I have to deal with the menu, if you notice that my mouse either doesn't move right away, or goes completely nuts.. I was at first  the playing the game at 400 DPI and was trying to switch up to 2000 DPI to control the menus.. I then tried to raise my low DPI to 800 to be able to move (slowely) in the menus and have a fast sensitivity in game.. It just didn't want to work out as I planned.. I still have to fling my mouse around just to get it to even move in the menus.. It's also faster than what I'm used to in game.. (In game mouse sensitivity is as low as it can go) As of this segment, I was running 800 DPI than making a desperate attempt to switch up to 2000, than drop back down as soon as I got out of the menu..

As for the run -
At 22 seconds - I disabled the stupid bot that I'm forced to hack because it does nothing but slow me down trying to get through the door way. So, I just deactivate it and jump over it..

At 38 seconds - I use a trick that I found myself Cheesy .. I actually found it out because I was trying to kill a splicer that was attacking me in a failed attempt and hit the windows with the wrench on accident, which broke the glass.

43 - 48 seconds - I zapped the splicer behind the one in front of me, which was ok because she stayed zapped.. I zapped the one in front me me, but a bot shooting at me hit her and woke her up, which in turn caused me to have to whack her twice.. This part is kind of random anyway.. Sometimes that doorway is filled with splicers, while other times it's an open area.

1:37 - I watched one of the older youtube runs and was kind of dumbfounded that they took the way they got up there.. I thought the way I took was the way it was intended heh. Even if it wasn't, it was still faster.

1:56 - another video lockup.. This one seemed to also happen randomly at this spot.. Sometimes it happened while other times it didn't.. This was the best run I got all the attempts, so I kept it.

2:40 - I was bored? :p .. It doesn't hurt my time..

3:43 - I think going through the broken glass is faster than going through the door?

I don't know if not grabbing the shotgun will hurt me later on in this run, but We'll find out I guess..

I'm probably going to kill at least one big daddy per area.. Going to try and get my wrench skillz up there so I'm not helpless later on in it..

1 last thing, I want the good ending.

The baddle haz jusd begunn!
I still have all the files from my run (just shy of 10GB right now) and just need to do audio commentary for the Proving Grounds and Fontaine, but have been really busy with school and a recent move, plus the fact that I don't have consistent enough internet yet to seed a torrent for upload.  I still intend to submit it, but am just having trouble scheduling it in.  I still think the game would be better off with a PC run, too, especially with the Smuggler's Hideout skip.

Oh, and since it apparently isn't so easy to just watch the run with it scattered on YouTube as it is, I put together a playlist.

give me your eyes!!!
Apathy, have you not thought about using not-really-death abuse?

Because of the way it works it can't really be separate categories and it saves plenty of time while requiring a lot of planning and is tough to pull off (so it's not a cheap tactic but an integral part of playing Bioshock for speed).

Just wondered what your thoughts are and wanted to bring it up before it was too late.

Gameplay's very nice though for everything except getting caught on splicers. I'm trying to play it again and see how random they are but my current PCs worse than when I played originally so it's a bit slow.

And I'm really looking forward to your audio commentary Cauldrath.
I agree with CannibalK9.  Death warps are simply essential to this run.  Cauldrath's run is masterful partly because he manages his health well, so as to shave off 10 seconds here and there doing a Death warp.

Quote:

OK...but... you do realize this bleeds a lot of time from your run, and makes it somewhat inevitable (and easy) for someone to beat your time?  Compare this segment with Cauldrath's.  His is a full 2 minutes faster, mainly because he skips both Big Daddies, the Gatherer's Garden, and the cut scene.  ADAM is not as essential as one might think in a BioShock speed run.

Segment 3 -
- You can do the battle + ghost right after getting the machine gun (at ~45 seconds) faster by running past the splicers and triggering the ghost *first*, killing the splicers next, then opening the door.  This is faster because the door won't open until the ghost's done its thing, so it's best not to wait to trigger it.
- There's a super-hard trick for skipping Incinerate completely. You melt the ice on the ground floor using a bit of fire from something else.  It's nearly impossible to do.  You have to hit flaming wreckage from the dental office *exactly* right three or four times before it goes out.  It also makes the rest of the run a bit trickier.  It's basically for people on highly segmented runs who are obsessed with the absolute best time.
- One trick Cauldrath did around 2:30 was telekinese a grenade from the Nitro Splicer at the top of the double stairs, and hold on to until you reach Steinman.  Much quicker than waiting for the Nitro Splicer at Steinman's to come out.
- Nice TK'ing. Smiley
- @3:43 - Yeah, that's faster.
- As referenced above, there's a way to skip the entire cut-scene sequence with a Death Warp.  Cauldrath does it in his run, here:
(roughly @1:25-1:40)
It's also documented on the Wiki, here:
http://scratchpad.wikia.com/wiki/Medical_Pavilion#Useful_Death_Warps
- The shotgun can be gotten several places, so just as long as it's "on the path", you should be fine.

Nice to hear it's still available Cauldrath - look forward to seeing it up on the site.  And frankly I think there's justification for having two categories (XBox 360 and PC), given the various differences.  I guess that's up to the staff though.

BTW, Cauldrath - your playlist is not visible to others.  It says "you do not own this playlist".
