HaosEdge made a series of tutorial videos covering new strats including the Musketless route, the Sneaky Decoy, and some other less significant new findings.
This is a great companion to Snowy's NG Any% tutorial as it covers everything that was found after that tutorial was made(so the WD clip and everything since that).
Whats up everybody! As some of you might now, I am currently grinding NG any% runs offline. Today I had a 13:58.6, which I thought I should share. ESPECIALLY because it has Maki's WD clip in it, too.
NG ASL Figured out some new strats for the Wild Outskirts combat. The main change is killing two pincushions with one grenade to be able to do Leon's strategy of killing both the big Pecker and the 4th pincushion with one grenade, without losing time on the first 3 pincushions.
Hi there! I'm SomeDude. Been looking at running Bastion (and in general) for a while now, and I've finally started into practice in NG Any%. Looking forward to working on getting my time down further!
So to begin, a question: Is there mininum video quality required for submissions? I'm very, very new to recording software of any kind, but I've started recording my runs (OBS and LiveSplit on my laptop). I'm still playing with settings, but the videos I have so far--one of which I'd like to make my first submission--are terrible quality for the most part and very laggy for some reason. I don't think it makes the video unwatchable, but I also don't want to submit a video that isn't clear enough to be considered to begin with.
So is there a specific standard that's held with videos? And if so, any thoughts on how I can rework either what I already have or what I make in the future?
Thanks, and I'm looking forward to working on this game!
If you just want to get your time on the speedrun.com/bastion leaderboards, pretty much any video quality is fine as long as I'll be able to tell what's going on in the game. SDA run submissions require very high quality recordings, but that's probably not what you're interested in anyway.
Also, I'm pretty much the only semi-active runner of this game left(and the SDA forums aren't used that much anymore anyway), if you ever need any help you can contact me more easily with tweets/twitter PMs at twitter.com/rainlife__, I can also get you invited into some Discord server to chat.
Huh. Guess I showed up later to the party than I thought. Well, thanks for the info. I'll likely submit every now and then as I PB, and I'll keep playing with OBS and all to see how good I can get my video quality. If nothing else, this is good practice for figuring it out for games I run in the future. And I'll look into what Discord is as well. Thanks again!

Well, you're not the only new one to the party; I just started running this game (NG Any%) a couple days ago to get my feet wet in speedrunning without trying a game that's either 2+ hours long or requires a ton of frame-perfect stuff. I'm trying to get sub-20 before I start recording and submitting anything. So far I think I just need practice more than anything.
Question for a Veteran: Are there specific points for each split or is it just whatever works for you? I've just been hitting splits more or less when I hit the skyway at the end of each level, but I was curious as to whether there was some kind of accepted convention or not.
Thanks, and I hope to some day get as good as y'all!
As with all splits, it really just depends on what you want to do. I, like most people, split when I hit the skyway at the end of the level, and when I fall from WD. I know RedBuddha splits when he enters the next level. If you want to have accurate level comparisons with other people, I'd suggest doing the former, but it really doesn't matter.
For what it's worth, and I hate saying this, I actually prefer Buddha's way of splitting just because of what key I bound split to.
First of all - Hey guys, welcome to the Bastion-community! Glad to have you I just wanna say that recently I got myself a new PC and with that, I now have the possibility of streaming Bastion NG any% attempts again. Therefore, feel free to check in every now and then, since there is a good chance that I am going to give it a couple of tries here and there. Until then, have fun with you runs and don't hesitate to ask quesitons if you are looking for help/advise/whatever really. People like Feral, Vulajin, Arctice and I (basically the entire active community, I guess) will glady help you out.

My split key is 0 I can't realistically roll into a skyway and split at the same time. hitting enter and 0 on selecting a level is a lot easier for me.
During one of the runs I did (sorry to whoever had to verify it on speedrun.com - arctice I think) I was so nervous in the Heart of the Bastion that I double-tapped spacebar and reset LiveSplit (thank goodness it was a PB otherwise LiveSplit wouldn't have saved it).
I have to ask, how do you get some of the dialogue skips? I know about the Pipe Skip, but before Hanging Gardens and Roathus Lagoon there is seemingly unskippable dialogue that prevents me from entering the level which costs me a few seconds. Is there a way to skip this?
The skyway timing works for me, and now that I've set PBs with it, it'd be pretty hard to change without resetting all of my splits. Is it worth it to change? Right now, my split key is spacebar.
Could I also get some honest feedback on this run? I know that my Lunky is bad, I'm working on it, and I already saved 15 secs in another unpublished run where I got the drop first try. I can also get 3-cycle queen and the Roathus damage boosts pretty consistently now, so don't worry about those things. Thanks!
I just did some reading on the SDA Knowledge Base and I now realize that my building/dialogue skip questions are all on that article. Unless anything here is out of date, in which case your input would be appreciated: https://kb.speeddemosarchive.com/Bastion/Any%25_Routes Thanks anyway!
The text skip stuff Everything on the wiki should be up to date.
Thanks for getting back to me; and also, thanks for watching my low quality OBS vids every day that I've posted to speedrun.com. Seriously, you're the best.
Watched your latest PB, you don't take Whirlwind and the Sneaky Decoy. Whirlwind makes the Workmen Ward fight much faster(and can be used to clip more easily at the end of Wharf District), and Sneaky Decoy makes it easier to 2-cycle Queen Anne by giving you free critical hits. (also don't worry, my first runs were much worse quality before I upgraded my PC)
I did watch the tutorial by HaosEdge about how to do Musketless Roathus (ironically I thought that musketless Lunky was easier), and I think I just wanted to start by grabbing the musket and then switch over after I got the general run down. In all honestly, I kinda completely forgot until you mentioned it. I'll definitely start working on adding both of those things to my run, though getting the hang of the decoy will probably take a little while.
