You've been waiting for a while. I stalled out pretty hard, but we're finally getting something going.

So, what's this all about? Well, the Australian speedrunning community has been struggling for a solution of how to get a proper Australian marathon going for a while, and I think the solution has been presented to me. (Thanks to certain person / s who know who they are.

The marathon will be hosted at AVCON (https://www.avcon.org.au/) in 2015. We will be provided with floor space, consoles / TVs and all we have to do in return is put on a good show. Hence why I am here.

Before I go to my contact saying that we should go for it, and start the ball rolling proper, I'm doing a little whip-round to see who's interested

So, if you're interested in this marathon - and have even the slightest possibility you'll be able to come, please fill out the following form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1DFds5L0QVcmCLtAL1AzNOiM2yq1wuQMqbgk85dHFVl0/viewform?usp=send_form

For now, I can provide the following additional information:

- If you are going to do a run, we can probably get you into the convention for the day you're doing your run, for free.
- Whether we can take donations / whether it's a good idea or not is up for speculation. (I haven't asked whether it's against any convention policies.) With a big enough speedrunner turnout - maybe it's something we could float - but for now, take the presumption this will just be for fun. (It'll probably swing that way)
- We did a speedrunning panel this year (2014) which was advertised...not much...and we got a turnout of about 50 people, sitting in chairs for about an hour and a half watching us screw around with tech difficulties for the first 45 minutes. With a bit of solidarity and showmanship - we can probably do better than 50. tl;dr - this is a reasonably big deal - both for 'us' (Aussies) as a community, and as a convention generally.

At this point, I will admit I've probably forgotten some facts. If you post in the thread, I'll try my damndest to answer anything, or attempt to play fetch for an answer. I can say that a solid date for the convention will be set by late November, and I'd like to start 'official' sign ups about then. (To be honest, I'd really like to have the schedule in stone by March-April.)

Anyway, advertise to your friends, family, and lets get people involved! We're finally being served the opportunity to get this thang going, let's kick it with a bang! (Not to mix metaphors or anything... Tongue )
Thread title:
Plays games quickly. Eventually.
Count me in!

If anyone from Melbourne needs a cheap way to get there; if you train to Ararat/Ballarat, I can grab you and we can drive (Prolly 6hrs.), I'll just ask for some petrol money and for you to cover your own snacks and stuff. \o/

Hey, nice to see an aussie event! I might come, but i will be in 9th grade, making money a hard thing to come by :/ I will probably getting a job so I might come, but I'm unsure if I'll run anything. I'll probably just spectate! I was gonna organise one over here in Perth, but didnt have the time. Hope to see al
of you there and keep the WR's coming!

EDIT: I will also need transport from the airport to the hotel or where ever we are staying!
Regarding transport, there's plenty of public transport everywhere in Adelaide, so that shouldn't be a problem. (Closer to the date a more concrete plan would be created for those needing transport. I think a single trip bus ticket is something like $3.)

Regarding lodgings, the Avcon website (see above) recommends some places you can stay - from hotels, to motels to backpackers places, so yeah.

Also - thanks for that offer Spud, should be (hopefully) a useful little offer to those in the area!

(I'm pretty sure everyone who's signed up is in the Skype group except one who doesn't have Skype as of yet - which is all good.)

Thanks Soft, I'll check them out later. I need to practice alot of speedgames to become good at any (Thinking either Expendabros, Kim Possible, Binding of Isaac  or Octodad Dadliest Catch glitchless) but just under 1 year is a hefty time to practice. I might do a Risk of Rain co-op/race if anyone wants to, but you never know! You can always message on skype or text (pm if you want number) if there is any things you want to sort out.
I don't think there's enough charact
I'm pretty sure I'll be able to get there as long as I don't move away too far by then.
I have a lot of projects by then.
I'll probably post more when needed, but I'm mainly focusing on The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap.
Pretty sure we'll eventually just host it at someones place, and we'll go back to the age old times of SGDQ 2012.
Marill, not sure what you mean by hosting it at someone's house.

My apologies if I've mis-interpreted something somewhere, but the marathon being discussed in this thread will be happening at a convention, and not someone's house. (Just to make sure no one is confused at all.)
Just a quick query, will this be on a live stream or just a live event?
At this point, we are guaranteed a live event. (Assuming that we go forward, of course)

I would like to get a stream going - because it would be cool - however there are minor issues with the convention committee and allocation of internet bandwidth. They are likely to be overcome, by showing that we're cool kids, and I think that we'll be able to, but it's only a 'probably' and not a 100% - at least at this stage.
I don't think there's enough charact
It's cool. I didn't mean it by any means.
Just having a poke at how difficult this seems to be, seeing how a lot of other plans have fell through the floor.

I'm sorry to anyone who I confused.

If we're not able to live stream it, will there be plans to record the event?
Regarding recording if no live stream, it can probably be arranged to some degree at least, and would probably be pretty easy.

I think an absolute bare minimum - there would be some (consensual) photography, both for / from the convention and just for us.
Cool, I've got at least 1 of my friends coming (AmazingOrange23) but I don't know if my other friend will come. Also, what consoles will you be providing?
I might be able to, if any Brisbane people are gonna car pool for it, i could do that. If not i might be able to take a holiday there and do a Jedi Academy Run. Already submitted a form with my deets
Regarding consoles - more details to come later. Way too early to make any calls on that.
All right, I'm able to bring a Dreamcast, N64 and PS2 if anyone is planning on using them
I don't think there's enough charact
So many questions I want to ask, but it's not for an entire year.
If you have any idea, how many days/hours are we able to hold this marathon?
Yeah, probably a good idea to suss out the finer details closer to the date. Cheesy

Regarding time, we'll probably end up with about 20 hours split over two days. That's a pretty rough guess though. Could be a little more, could be a little less. (Probably going to be a bit less)
Do you want me to make a form where people can submit their runs or should we leave that for later?
Don't need to charge into organisation head first! Cheesy Let's actually get a bleedin date before we start anything!
Tomba! YA YA YA
Ill start putting money aside for this asap, live in Perth so making it to Adelaide isn't too hard, i might even be able to run Tombi for this, really excited to see this coming together!
Hey Raikou, we can carpool if you need to!
I don't think there's enough charact
Wait, you're from perth, MrMutantDuck?
Ain't that convenient. Though it'll be sooo much cheaper if you guys were to go by plane.
Make it easy to navigate by flying together.
Sorry for the confusion! I meant to the airport, not to Adelaide Tongue

I don't think there's enough charact
That makes a lot more sense.
Sorry about the misunderstanding.
