You've been waiting for a while. I stalled out pretty hard, but we're finally getting something going.
So, what's this all about? Well, the Australian speedrunning community has been struggling for a solution of how to get a proper Australian marathon going for a while, and I think the solution has been presented to me. (Thanks to certain person / s who know who they are.
The marathon will be hosted at AVCON (https://www.avcon.org.au/) in 2015. We will be provided with floor space, consoles / TVs and all we have to do in return is put on a good show. Hence why I am here.
Before I go to my contact saying that we should go for it, and start the ball rolling proper, I'm doing a little whip-round to see who's interested
So, if you're interested in this marathon - and have even the slightest possibility you'll be able to come, please fill out the following form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1DFds5L0QVcmCLtAL1AzNOiM2yq1wuQMqbgk85dHFVl0/viewform?usp=send_form
For now, I can provide the following additional information:
- If you are going to do a run, we can probably get you into the convention for the day you're doing your run, for free.
- Whether we can take donations / whether it's a good idea or not is up for speculation. (I haven't asked whether it's against any convention policies.) With a big enough speedrunner turnout - maybe it's something we could float - but for now, take the presumption this will just be for fun. (It'll probably swing that way)
- We did a speedrunning panel this year (2014) which was advertised...not much...and we got a turnout of about 50 people, sitting in chairs for about an hour and a half watching us screw around with tech difficulties for the first 45 minutes. With a bit of solidarity and showmanship - we can probably do better than 50. tl;dr - this is a reasonably big deal - both for 'us' (Aussies) as a community, and as a convention generally.
At this point, I will admit I've probably forgotten some facts. If you post in the thread, I'll try my damndest to answer anything, or attempt to play fetch for an answer. I can say that a solid date for the convention will be set by late November, and I'd like to start 'official' sign ups about then. (To be honest, I'd really like to have the schedule in stone by March-April.)
Anyway, advertise to your friends, family, and lets get people involved! We're finally being served the opportunity to get this thang going, let's kick it with a bang! (Not to mix metaphors or anything...
