I managed to get a 30:17 recorded today. I had a terrible Entrance to the Cistern, which basically cost me the run. I got all the regular run-killing tricks really quickly (my Entrance Hall is fantastic, for instance), but there were a couple of unnecessary mistakes throughout the run (mainly with the really easy tricks, sadly), so I'll keep on trying :). I really need to work on the Back Hall trick to get to the Study quickly.

If it weren't for that horrible Entrance to the Cistern, I might have broken the magic barrier of 30 minutes already. Alas!

Nice, you finally nailed it. I'm very happy you end up beating my record like I said, from now on at least, I know that if I don't end up beating this, this game is going to be in good hands Smiley .

What?
That's a really nice single segment. I'm still thinking taking the OOB route in the study isn't worth it in a single segment, though - it saves at most a few seconds of time when performed as cleanly as I did in my old segmented run. Not getting through the roof on the first try and then landing in an unfortunate position will mean you probably loose time there.

Also, i just got disgustingly lucky in the cells today - so i've only got a few more levels to go.

I agree with you on the Study. I've been doing some timing tests today, and it's quite often not worth taking the OOB route. I get it cleanly rather often, but unless it's done completely perfectly (i.e., not like in that SS run) I generally end up wasting a few seconds. I'll be taking the window route again from now on again. Compared to a perfect OOB route, that would only sacrifice a tiny bit of time anyway.

EDIT: Strike my original message... I can't seem to start up Amnesia at all now, because my GPU temperature skyrockets. I need to find an engineer who can help me fix these hardware issues before I can continue running. I'll see if I can play the game on my old laptop, but I'm quite doubtful it could also handle recording runs very easily. Man, this is really unfortunate :\

Thanks - I will hopefully be able to start re-running segments by the weekend. I only have the chancel, inner sanctum and orb room left now.

Edit (05/07):
Turns out inner sanctum took about 40 minutes (it only requires that i get through the wall cleanly first try), and the orb chamber is trivially short. The chancel gave me some trouble, as the "shadow" kept splattering on me ruining attempt after attempt.

Anyway, Woo! Just recorded the orb chamber and am sitting nicely on a time (in SDA time) of just under 21:42 [assuming timing stops on "no you fool", which it should, as this marks when the game thinks the last pillar has fallen and the rest is just interactive cutscene]. Still need to improve the segments i said i was going to redo, to bring my time into the 21:30 range. Nearly there, and will have a video of the full run up on youtube hopefully by sunday night!
Main Work!!!
Nice! Great job, I'll be watching and commenting as soon as it is on youtube. I should be rerunning my SS soon since one of the main reason my time have been beat is the new found I made in the Nave(between the transept and the Chancel), so I should record a run with it shouldn't I? About the SS w/reset, it's starting to look great and I should have a record of this pretty soon too Smiley .

21:42! Fantastic. I'm in London now, so in celebration of your completed speed run, I'll head over to the Colosseum at Regent's Park, and see if I can take the ascension room to view the panorama, while watching your run (I purposefully booked a hostel near that place, just so that I could say that!)

André, that run I uploaded might be quicker than your current run, but it's also quite sloppy in some spots. Archive Tunnels, Back Hall, Southern Prison, Choir and Chancel all could've gone better, so the run is definitely beatable. The tricky part is to get things like the Entrance Hall so cleanly, but that should be very doable. I've fixed my GPU issues, but am abroad for a few days. Will start recording runs again in about 5 days :). I wish I had caught your 100% glitchless, stream! Unfortunately, it started around 3AM for me.
What?
Got a 2 second improvement in the entrance hall today with a slight change on my route and some better execution (the run will be on YT soon enough so you'll see the small change then). Only two improvement segments left, so I'm at that stage where the run time can only go down now, rather than up. Or to put it another way: "Good. This ride might be a little longer - and in the other direction."

Yeah rainy hall - my bad.
Had a slight scare today when my hard drive died (again), but thankfully i had all my footage backed up, apart from a few of the last segments which I was able to recover. Finished the prison today, and improved the old archives. I guess that means I'm done! Full Video on youtube will be coming up in a few hours i hope.

Edit:
Leaving computer making the video overnight - will hopefully have this uploaded tomorrow!

omg that's a nice time there Cheesy gz nice job
Very good run!
I wonder (although I hate such tricks) if you couldn't let more dialogues run during loading screens. Like if you had entered the Morgue a little bit later and Alexander would have spoken while the game loads?
Edit history:
Apjjm: 2012-07-08 05:06:24 pm
What?
I could have done, but then that would have meant I triggered the long part of the dialogue I had split over the loading screen for the sewers earlier in the cistern, so I would have gained some time in one spot but lost some time in another.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent, segmented run with glitches

Chapter 1

Rainy Hall: Seems pretty fluid and fast(I’m surprised that it’s faster to get no boost on this map though)
Old Archives: Getting the 1.0 speed at the beginning of this is totally random so nice on this but I’m pretty sure this would be faster if you would get the possible boost at the end of it.
Refinery: Perfect, nice clip and monster dodging here.
Cellar Archives: everything is fine there but it’s faster to take the needle right away when you pick it because you have to wait a bit before using it when you get out of the inventory(but that is only mere frames so it doesn’t matter).
Archives tunnel: Could have been more aggressive… NOT, seriously that’s very insane.
Study: picking the note there is unnecessary but doesn’t lose that much time.
Guest room: That was easy ! Tongue
Storage: Aggressive strats are aggressive, totally insane dude.
Machine room: Very nicely done!

Chapter 2

Prison Southern: Nice, very fluid(almost missed the hammer Tongue )
Prison Northern: Good job there
Entrance of the Cistern: LOL
Morgue: Very good
Sewer: You can get a lot of boosts in the sewer but with the strats you used, I think I can’t complained, very fluid, very fast, good strat, good job!
Nave: nice strat there
Choir: Nice boosts, pretty much perfect.
Nave: insane randomness Tongue .
Transept: Long… that’s the transept, good though.
Nave: All went nice and smooth
Chancel: …

Chapter 3

Cells: In…Sane but there’s a way to get OOB faster
Nave: only segment that I’m not satisfied with so far, I think you could have cut off 2 or 3 seconds maybe.
Chancel: Damn, that was good
Inner Sanctum: totally nailed, since you didn’t trigger the switch, the music will go on for EVER.
Orb Chamber: Nice boosts there, I wasn’t aware of this one.

Overall comments: Nice run, I wasn’t believing that this game would have been that much broken when we start speedrunning it a years ago, I find it sad that you won’t be running this anymore since it was pretty fun working with you on destroying this game, hope we’re gonna do this again on AAMFP.

No Cheating
A/V: I can’t tell, can you give me a DL link to a better quality than youtube.
Verdict: Easy accept if you submit it,
So congrat to Andy!!!

What?
Firstly thanks :).

In response to a few things:

Rainy hall: It's a choice between getting a boost or taking the path I took. I got one decent boost in my previous segment and managed to somehow save just under 2 seconds on it, so you have to get a bit lucky with a good double boost (or finding a spot to boost and not take damage with the new path, i guess) which i just couldn't get to happen well enough to match my time (though to be fair some of that time improvement was perhaps down to a really tight path in the stab corridor).

Study: Getting the note saves time by replacing the parasol flashback with a guardian howl event (Taken from Back hall script file - line 317 IIRC). This flashback happened without the note, as i had to re-route this entire area and chuck out segments to include grabbing the note which meant doing the rooms in a different order.

Cells: Can you put up a video of this.

Nave redux: Running this segment sucks, seriously - i hated this more than the machine room. I'm either incredibly unlucky or just getting through without getting splattered or taking fall damage putting you below 48hp is an incredibly rare event. Also, I can't do the drop down the stairs in bigger increments and still avoid taking damage, as i have found out the fall damage cancel randomness when i played about here when testing is related to the F4 quick-save (which i haven't used in my segmented run at all as It was already a buggy feature in other ways)[quickload is fine though], and taking any significant damage below 50hp can lower your movement speed enough to make the inner sanctum (near) impossible.

Anyway, next up is Justine (and encoding this run). Getting a run that doesn't fail with that last trick is going to be... fun :D. By the time i finally get a run that is halfway good of that i'm sure AAMFP will have come out.

Look at my recent SS for the Study, I didn't took the note and didn't trigger the Flashback and I'll do and upload a video of the cell in a couple of minutes

I guess I was mistaken about the note - i suppose i can re-do the study as it isn't a particularly difficult segment and won't have any knock-on effect for other segments in the run.

You'll also need to redo the Back Hall since the shadow soesn't appear(for consistency)

Sorry, it took longer than expected, the video is currently uploading(I had no game at the Cells, in fact my closest game was at the Guest Room, so I had to do the whole game).
Totally rad
My internet is absolutely terrible here at the moment, so I can't view the video directly; In the Back Hall, whenever I exit the Storage area I move slightly diagonally, and walk along the carpet on the floor towards the Machine Room. This makes you hit a trigger that opens up the door on the way to the machine room, so that you don't have to do it yourself (i.e., you can just run straight through). I don't remember seeing it in your run (but my memory may be faulty); If you're re-doing the Back Hall anyway, that would be a nice, tiny improvement.

What?
I've redone the study and back hall segment saving just under two seconds.
I have also spent some time failing in the cells. Being a new trick (or at least one I was unaware of), rather than fixing a mistake with my planning though i wasn't too concerned if I didn't get it - but i decided to give it a go in case I got lucky (again), or it was easier this time around. I was wrong on both counts, and also underestimated just how lucky I was in my current segment (especially the run up to the door), so I'm leaving this for now.

To be honest, I'm burnt out in actually running this game for the moment and I'm going to take at least a couple of months before serious Justine attempts. I have to draw the line and submit eventually, and without months of work I can't see myself getting the run time (SDA time) below 21:30 even with a new cells and morgue, let alone into the 20:XX territory (currently at 21:37 if my timing is correct). So it's done Smiley

Awesome. Congrats on finalising the run then, Apjjm! It's going to be a very obvious accept from me in verification, but I'll write some more extensive commentary nonetheless. Phenomenal run, and I'm glad to see you managed to pull it off! I can understand being burnt out on this, since you've been working on the segmented run for ages now.
Totally rad
Scrolled through the thread to see if there's any mention of it, but I didn't find anything. I've just discovered that item-hopping is possible in Amnesia. You can do a quintuple jump using a chair. Haven't been able to get much higher than that yet, but it may be possible with some good timing.

I can't think of a specific location where we could apply this (since the game is actually very flat), but perhaps it will come in handy somewhere. There's much experimenting to be done!
