Crawlathon WR, get down on my level.
The sorting order is now: status first, then last updated time, newest on top.
Perfect, thanks a bunch!
I made a few submissions earlier but am feeling unsure about one of them now and want to replace it with a different game. Anyway for me to edit them or do I just have to deal with it?

This is why we said repeatedly not to send in your submission until you were 100% ready. It's not a race. You're gonna have to deal with it.

Speaking of Editing Submissions

This is the plan for this week for functionality:

1. The ability to withdraw a submission. You will be able to pull a submission out of the event, in case you can't come or something. You cannot replace it with another submission. You can supply an explanation.
2. The ability to add/modify the run video supplied with your submissions.
3. The ability to modify the availability dates for your submissions.

There will be no other types of alteration allowed.
My feelings on The Demon Rush
For more clarification on editing submissions, basically, if we let people edit their entire submission at any time, then that would be ripe for a ton of abuse and troll submissions. There would also be problems such as I rejected/waitlisted/bonus game'd a run and then the runner edited their submission, should it stay in that status or should it go back to pending?
Figured as much. It's no sweat, just figured i'd ask anyway. Thanks for answering for promptly, guys.

So I can submit my games and then add in the video later? That seems weird to me because what if it's a very lesser known game that gets cut but a video would've changed that? I'm waiting till I have videos regardless was just curious. Seems Redundant.
Quote from mikwuyma:
Yeah I'm not denying that claude has great commentary (I watched part of his video), but that still doesn't make it a good marathon game.

IMO great commentary becomes more important with every coming marathon. I'd much prefer a not amazingly technical speedrun with great commentary to a really technical speedrun where the runner says nothing at this point. You should reconsider how important good commentary is for viewer perception of a run.

You could, but it's risky. I'm only doing it because it's not really abuseable and would help later on after the schedule is made (for updating on practice for the event and such).

The superior option is ALWAYS to wait to submit. There is no better alternative. You gain nothing by being in the system earlier than someone else.
So I noticed my Rogue Legacy Submission got put onto the waiting list. All my original videos for that run got wiped out but I'am more then capable of doing it again. Could I get an edit on that submission with the video if I PM someone once I have the video available in the near future? I have a busy work schedule but I can definitely fit in some runs this week. If so, who would I PM about the submission unless I can edit it myself.

Now updating on practice is an amazing reason didn't think of that i retract my precious statement lol

Ok, thank gods! It would've been pains to record Freedom Planet for that long with Camstudio and get it to actually save!

... *ahem* yes, uh yeah, that's good news for me. ^^'

Why not record it in https://obsproject.com/ ? I recorded a 2 hour video in OBS once and the only problem it had was slight audio hiccups here and there.
If you know, you can foresee
Wow, I didn’t expect such a strong defense force to come out on my behalf. I didn’t pay any of them – honest! There’s obviously been a lot of great responses thus far that echo my thoughts, but of course I’ll take the time to personally respond to each of your points.

1. In actual RTA attempts, I always use the cutscenes as a period to discuss what I’m thinking about in terms of the next battle, my current EXP / JP situation, or various anecdotes about the game. For the marathon-style commentary video I linked, I also talked a lot about the storyline of the game, so that people who have never seen or played it before can follow along. I feel if I can summarize what’s actually going on for those unfamiliar with the game, it makes the cutscenes a bit more tolerable.

2. This is the strangest point to me. Most runs on average will have 10 encounters or less. It costs approximately 27 seconds to reload and try getting past an encounter again, to about 5 minutes lost total on average. In fact, you probably spend less time “interacting” with random encounters than any other Final Fantasy game I can think of! If you’re worried about downtime, I could easily talk about the monsters I would be fighting at each of the 20 potential random encounter locations, were I to actually fight the encounter Smiley

3. If by the “end game” you mean the last 5 battles of the game (approximately 13 minutes of the game), then yes, I’ll admit the strategies there are pretty straight forward. However, due to the heavily randomized nature of the game, there is seldom a battle that is “free” in terms of executing my strategy with no time lost. Each run brings something new with it, which is why I’ve been able to play the game for so long. It is very much a game where your knowledge of the game is essential, especially in the category I am offering. Although my strategies seem simple, there are usually a dozen different things I’m worried about in a given fight. I try to relay this via my commentary, so that anyone watching can identify with my situation. For example – each generic enemy unit can have a completely different equipment / ability loadout each playthrough, and there is a chance I will do half damage to him based on an overarching gameplay mechanic. While this will very seldom be run-breaking, it requires quick adaption in order to minimize time loss.

4. While I’ll admit FFT lacks obvious donation incentives, I wouldn’t exactly write off naming “random units” as trivial – I wouldn’t be able to beat the game without them! From my experience of listening to people’s casual playthroughs of the game, they often value their hired characters above all else, simply because they could name + train them from the very beginning of the game. Oftentimes people wouldn’t even use the special characters that join, simply because they’ve become so attached to their hired units. I would also be referring to the hired units by whatever name they’re given whenever possible, to make the audience aware that they are an integral part of the run.

There is a lot that could be added in terms of donation incentives, like recruiting optional characters (such as Cloud) - but this would obviously add a lot of time (which I wanted to avoid, to keep a clean 5 hour estimate). I am not sure what does and doesn’t make a good donation incentive, so for the sake of being complete, I will list everything I can think of. The time added on is from a run with zero incentives.

4a) Naming the hero + hired units (+1 minute)
This one is obvious.  It’s worth noting that in my current route, I only use 2 hired units. If it would be a better sell, I could adapt the route to include 3 hired units instead. This is something I had been thinking of doing anyways, since it might actually be faster for RTA.

4b) Choosing the hero’s birthday (from within a range of days) (+10 seconds)
I need to plan out the hero’s Zodiac sign in advance, as it is a pivotal part of the route. However, there are multiple days that can be used in order to determine this Zodiac sign. For example – if I were to make the hero a Capricorn, any day ranging from December 23rd to January 19th would work. This could lead to people donating for certain holidays, donating to match the hero’s birthday to their own, etc.

4c) Saving / not saving certain guest characters (+~3 minutes)
In 3 battles, you are given a choice as to whether or not you want to save a given character. Saving Algus at Mandalia Plains would be the trickiest (probably about +2 minutes), saving Boco at Araguay Woods would be about +10 seconds, and saving Mustadio at Zaland Fort City would be about +1 minute. Algus is a very polarizing character for those who have played the game, and most would likely pay good money to see him dead. Boco the Chocobo is an FF classic, and saving him is trivial.  I admit most wouldn’t particularly care about Mustadio, but I can easily save him if need be.

It’s worth noting that these decisions don’t have any long-term gameplay implications, nor are they particularly impactful or difficult. But then again, neither is kill / save the animals, I suppose.

4d) Recruiting optional characters (+30 minutes?)
I’ve never personally done this, or imagined what the route is like, but this option is here if it’s truly a dealbreaker. This would also include doing most of the sidequests (an additional 6 battles), as well as watching more cutscenes (one of which is very humorous). Characters you can recruit include a giant robot, a dragon woman, and even Cloud Strife himself. I personally am not a big fan of this incentive, just because it would add so much time (and the characters are useless) – but the option is here. Also, it’s worth noting that a majority of this added time would be attempting to bypass random encounters – and in this instance, it truly would hurt the pace of the run.

4e) Fighting the final boss blindfolded (+3 minutes)
I wouldn’t have offered this if I wasn’t confident I could do it. The last battle has no meaningful RNG, and is overall very anti-climactic in terms of ending a given FFT run (even if the strategy for this run is pretty unique). Doing it blindfolded would, in my opinion, add a nice bit of tension to the end of a run, and would make the final boss truly something to be worried about.

4f) Goofy incentives
These are a bit of a stretch, but I might as well be completely exhaustive:
- Choosing whether you did or did not read the Germonik Scriptures in Ch. 3 (meaningless dialogue option)
- Choosing to buy a flower in Ch. 4 (meaningless dialogue option if not doing the sidequests)
- Actually using given special characters in a battle (Wouldn’t be optimal, but I’m sure I could find at least one use for each of them). As an aside, there are several special characters that offer to join your party in the main storyline, and if this is a meaningful incentive, I could recruit + use them as well.
- Killing the hero’s sister in the final battle (She is slow and wastes time, but a majority of the game’s storyline revolves around saving her)

---

As a personal aside, I’ll vouch for my own passion for FFT. I’ve played the game pretty much since the day it came out. I would have a lot to talk about from my own experiences of doing challenge runs, playing competitively, playing romhacks, and speedrunning the game for almost 2 years now. There is no one on this planet that has put as much time into the game as I have, and I wouldn’t have done so if I didn’t feel confident that it was the best game ever made. If I were given the opportunity to share why I care so much about FFT at AGDQ, it would be one of the greatest honors I’ve ever had.

Thanks for listening to mine & other people’s arguments. I respect your decision no matter what happens. Oh yeah, and thanks for letting in DKC2 as well! That game is cool.

Great commentary can make an otherwise uninteresting run amazing. It can make a game. Witwix's commentary of Boshy made that game at SGDQ. It's a good enough watch on it's own, but it wouldn't have been so memorable without the commentary.

Sounds pretty great if you ask me plenty of stuff to do. As a long time viewer on your stream i would see a FFT run on AGDQ as one of the big highlights. It is a new and entertaining game at AGDQ and you explained it all great.
I would say claude knows FFT better than the guys who made it. I believe people dont want to see the same Zelda, Mega Man, Donkey Kong again and again, at least i dont want too. I say give him the oportunity to show the world how great a FFT run can be. You have nothing to lose i promise people will like it!

So haha, new glitch in Pokemon Red was shown off literally just now, my estimates for the game can be cut in half (30 minutes normally, 35 minutes blindfolded) Honestly the run is actually even better for a marathon now, still shows off all the cool glitches, and removes a fair bit of RNG/Pokemon thrashing with a level 100, while still being long enough to get engaged.

I tweeted this to Mike, but in case any others wanted to take a peek, here's a video of my recent MSF!2 split run: http://www.hitbox.tv/video/222303  Since my estimate for it was a guess due to not actually performing a run before submitting, I'd like it shortened by 5 minutes for the Any% NG+ route.  If 100% has serious interest behind it, I could definitely finish pathing that out soon and give a better estimate for that as well.  It's also cool to see that Risky's Revenge is making it past first cuts, too.  Maybe we can have another mini WayForward block? Smiley

Also, if it will help seal the deal, I'd love to sing the end credits for a donation incentive.  Here's the song:

My friend Victor mentioned that to me, but I haven't quite gotten it to work correctly yet. It shows up with only audio, no video. It's not too bad a situation right now, since I focus more on recording than streaming due to my school schedule, but it's definitely something I'll look into later on.

YAY MAJORAS MASK MINISH CAP SONIC ADVENTURE 2 AND MANY OTHER GAMES I LIKE MADE IT!

I can't wait to record my runs for two of my games and submit! There is one game that, in the case only one of my runs can make it, I would hope it would be that one. Atlantis Squarepantis DS. Since this isn't where you submit, I'll not explain here, but it's a big deal to me. If I'm accepted, it could go towards my community service hours I need to graduate! Cheesy

... Sorry, I just get excited easily. ^^'
I would just like to echo cyghfer's thoughts as I am thinking basically the same things. I don't care if FFT is at 4AM, I will be in that room watching that run. Claude's talent for commentary should not be overlooked as he is IMO the greatest commentator we have in the speed running community, and not to overstate FFT because it is a fantastic watch otherwise, Claude is what would make the run at the marathon so much fun to watch and enjoy. I do hope you reconsider, but obviously give it some time to reconsider as you have a ton of crap to deal with atm.
