My feelings on The Demon Rush
Promo video up! http://forum.speeddemosarchive.com/post/agdq_2012_promo_video.html

What I've tried with some of the past marathons is contacting some of the gaming websites about a week before our marathons, but that hasn't really worked out. For those of you wondering how gaming websites picked up on on the last AGDQ, I'm honestly not sure, since all of the mentions were during AGDQ.

I think the main problem is that I've only tried once and then didn't do any follow up. What I think we should try this year is have everyone contact the gaming sites in waves. Yes, that means you should help too! I figure even if it's just 2-3 people telling the gaming sites about are marathon a week, then it's a lot more likely they'll recognize recognize us than just me contacting them, and that's a really lowball estimate in terms of number of people contacting per week.

I don't want everyone to contact the sites at once, like I said, we should do it in waves so we're persistent.

This is our press release you can use for promotion:

Quote:
Hello, it's Speed Demos Archive, the leading source of speed run videos, with speed runs of over 650 games from players all over the world.

From January 4th through 9th, 2012, we will hold a video game charity marathon called Awesome Games Done Quick 2012. All donations will go to Prevent Cancer Foundation (http://preventcancer.org ), an organization dedicated to funding promising treatment research. The entire event will be streamed live via justin.tv on our front page (http://speeddemosarchive.com ).

Approximately 80 members of our site's community will gather together in one location to play through over 100 different games non-stop as fast as they can. These games range from NES classics such as Super Mario Bros. and Mega Man 2, to recent titles such as Portal 2 and Halo: Reach. For a list of all 100 games and estimated start times, check out http://speeddemosarchive.com/marathon/schedule

During the event, we will also raffle off prizes for our viewers who generously donate during our marathon. A Legend of Zelda Master Sword, a Super Meat Boy tenderizer, games (including a boxed copy of Earthbound!), a Sonic comic collection, perlers (bead art), and plushies are only a portion of what we’ll be giving away!

We invite you to come to our front page at http://speeddemosarchive.com from January 4-9th to take part in the round-the-clock fun.

You don't have to use the press release, but it's there if you can't think of anything to write and I think it's a good base.

If you want a slightly fancier website version of the press release, then use this link: http://speeddemosarchive.com/pressreleases/agdq2012/

Once the trailer is finished (should be sometime this week), then I'll likely include that in the press release.

Now you're probably wondering how to hit up the gaming sites. I've posted contact information below. I'll add more sites as more pop into my head.

Gaming site contact info:

Major News Sites

1-up: feedback@1up.com - don't contact this, it'll bounce. Currently trying to find an alternative.

Zelda Universe: http://www.zeldauniverse.net/contact-us/

MMO Champion: http://www.mmo-champion.com/sendmessage.php

Other stuff

Obviously, major gaming sites aren't the only way to advertise and promote our marathon, so if there's a forum you hang out on, tell them about AGDQ2012! And of course, there is social media.

Our facebook event page: https://www.facebook.com/events/301825429842522/

If you're tweeting, you should probably just use the press release website. Here's the shortened link for tweeting: http://bit.ly/AGDQ2012PR  If you just want to link to the marathon page, then use this link: http://bit.ly/AGDQ2K12 - I would have used 2012, but bit.ly is stupid and won't let you delete link associations even after you've changed them.

People who have contacted gaming sites

mikwuyma - Dec 13 - all but gamespy and 1-up from the list. The gamespy form gave me an error, and the 1-up email bounced when I tried from two email accounts.

December 19th - Zelda Universe, Ars Technica, and Eurogamer

DJS - Dec 13 - Nintendoage

Chrno - Dec 13 - Pikigeek

Emptyeye - Dec 19th - Ryan North of Dinosaur Comics. Successful too. Smiley

Haters gonna hate
Mike's post covers things pretty well, but a few other things.  Most of these are pretty basic common sense kind of things, but it can't hurt to state them.

1.  If using email to contact anybody make the subject line very clear it's about the marathon.
Good example:  "SDA's Awesome Games Done Quick 2012 Charity Marathon"
Bad example:  "Cool gaming thing in January", "Thought you might be interested," "<no subject>"

2.  Similarly, with emails trying to keep them on the shorter side and let the link to the promotion page do most of the talking.  The press is a solid base, and stands well on its own, just tack the link on the end.  If you want to compose your own, that's fine, and the personal touch may very well help out (especially with an individual or smaller outfit), just don't send out a novel.

3.  PROOFREAD ANYTHING BEFORE YOU SEND IT!

4.  While our primary targets for promotion should be gaming sites/personalities, that doesn't mean it isn't worth it to take shots at some other general news sites or celebrities.  For example, if we got a retweet from some celebrity with a million followers, and only 1% of those followers care, that's still 10k people informed and interested.  Don't be afraid to think outside the box.

5. If you yourself have a decent sized following on youtube or twitter, doing some promotion through your own outlet is a fantastic way to help out on this front.  We'll have the promo vid soon, but you could make a quick vid just talking about the marathon a bit to your subscribers (I know JMan's done this the past few years) or tweet a bunch about the event in the weeks to come.

6.  If you don't get a response in a couple days from a smaller site/personality (someone/where we won't have a lot of people contacting), don't be afraid to send out another one.  Persistence pays off.

7.  Similarly, if you get a response and whoever it is is willing to help out, send a thank you.  Not only is it a nice thing to do, but also increases the chances they'll help out again down the line.

Lastly, it'd be helpful if you post about any place/person you contact here.  That way we aren't duplicating efforts (or maybe you'll have a place where we'll want to duplicate efforts).  Also post if you get a response so we aren't harassing people who have already agreed to help out or told us no.

That's all I've got for now.

My feelings on The Demon Rush
Sounds good Houser. Just tell me what the contact info is and I'll put it up on the first post. Then again, that's a site I should probably try first by myself since it's not exactly a gaming news site, and if they don't respond in a 5-7 days, then we can start being more persistent.

Don't know if this is the right place but if we ask big companies for sponsorship (we can offer them a banner of there name in the background)
If they say yes the properly will make some advertisement as well and we would have big names we can come with to the gaming sites.
My feelings on The Demon Rush
Tigger77: I didn't want to say anything until we actually secured something, but this is the status right now.

Capcom: I got into contact with their inquiries person over the phone, and she said she'd forward the email to the appropriate departments, but nothing happened since Friday. I should probably try again. :-/

Konami: I got contact info for the person in charge with promotion. I will call him today.

Microsoft: Cody Miller has the hookup and got me in contact with the person in charge of charitable giving.

Nintendo: Got in contact with the person in charge of charitable giving yesterday. She said she's running it by a review board.

Sega: Doesn't have a phone number on their site. Sad I've tried some other avenues of communicating, but nothing really worked. Puwexil (who runs the SDA twitter) said he is going to try to tweet Sega, because they frequently respond to their tweets.

Whoa!  I'm glad you are on top of things Mike!  That is very exciting news, even if nothing pans out.

Edit:  Are we playing any Rare games (besides Btoads)?  I know last year they watched Trek play BK.  Maybe we can piggy-back on that?

This.

Also, I tweeted Sega our request for support and a link to the press release last night.  Because of how Twitter works, if they're going to respond it'll probably be relatively soon (today or tomorrow).
Everybody's favorite monster
I already send out an email to Rare a week ago. Still havent heard from them Sad

Oh cool!  Way to be on top of it Trek!  Be sure to let us know if you hear back.  ^_^

(on second thought, maybe it's best if they don't see what happens to Battletoads....)

It might also be worth trying to reach out to notch. He pulled in a lot of viewers when he tweeted about watching us.
My feelings on The Demon Rush
Pootrain, I am wary of contacting Kotaku because I remember Phil from The Speed Gamers telling me stories how Kotaku only supports Child's Play-related marathons and said they would never support TSG. I guess we can still try though.

Thank you for the Gamespy contact info, but for some reason it didn't work out for me (I got an error message). Is there any other way to contact gamespy?

Also, I'm going to start keeping track of who contacted the gaming news sites, just to make sure we don't flood all at once, and to make sure people are contacting the sites.

Notch is a good idea. Anyone know the best way to contact him?
Fucking Weeaboo
But didn't Kotaku promote AGDQ last year?
My feelings on The Demon Rush
They did? I remember 1-up, Joystiq, gameinformer, and gamepro (R.I.P) promoting us, but not Kotaku.
Waiting hurts my soul...
Only article I found from Kotaku is this one for summer games marathon: http://www.kotaku.com.au/2011/08/50-games-in-50-hours-impossible/

Same. 1-UP's editor-in-chief's twitter is @gamespite so if it keeps on happening we can just ask him. In the meantime I'll try 1-UP on Facebook. All other 1-UP staff member infomation can be found here -
