I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Hi,
does anyone know the FPS XIII? I searched the forum and nobody didn't even mention the name - is XIII so unpopular?  :-/
Whatever - I played the game only once but I'm feeling like trying a speedrun on it.

My question is: Do you think that XIII is big enough to be recognized?
Thread title:
give me your eyes!!!
From what I've heard it was quite well known when it first came out then vanished into obscurity. I'm sure there'd be enough people here who have played it.
yeah do it - btw: german? Huh?
Uh ah oh Whii!! I love the game. please, please do the run. I'll help you with it if you want. Grin

I was actually about to do this topic myself.. But now that you have done it, I donät have to.. Whee!
I'm looking forward to this also. Go on and do it!  Smiley
Yeah, go for it! Great game.
I think it was the first game with "cell shading" to
generate that comic-look.

For some reason this game alwasy crashes at the beginning on my computer. I'll try again, and see if I can be of any help.

First game with cel-shading? Probably not. That might be Jet Set Radio, though I'm not sure.

Anyway, sure I've heard of it... I played it when it came out in a competition at College. Tongue No reason why it shouldn't be done.
King n00b!
First time I tried the demo of this game, I was getting extremely bad mouse lag. (first time I tried it was when it first came out).
Never give up!
Hmm...

Since this game was made for several systems, PC being just one of them (I myself own the PS2 version), there is at least a remote chance that I might be able to make suggestions to help you out.

However, I'll have to pick up this game again to do that.  There's no way I'd speedrun it myself, as I have too long of a list to deal with, but I can still provide some advice.  For instance, this might be an obvious one, but when using the stealthy approach, go with knockouts (I recommend using the one-use one-KO stuff like chairs, bricks, shovels, and the like) rather than using throwing knives or even the crossbow.  Save the knives and crossbow for distant targets that can't be silently killed otherwise, and make sure you do it right in the first shot.  Guns are pretty much right out in stealth missions, by the way.

Ah, beautiful game, it really is. And it never lags for me ;D.
The instant health packs in the game will help immensely when bypassing a lot of enemies. Because the game constantly takes away all your stuff when completing missions, you won't have a hard time planning out what health and ammo to get.
For stealth missions, a good way to test out body hiding is to just go through and leave the bodies as they lay. Then when you get caught for a body, the next practice you hide that one.
I would recommend doing this on normal difficulty, as opposed to XXX. Mostly because the bosses take forever to kill. Hell, I only had a few pistol clips left after Number 2.

Tanks for alle the replies  Cheesy

It's really a pity that the game vanished so quick. Ubisoft even started some crazy competition (You-in-the-game or so) where the model of the winner would get included as a ingame model. Would be great to play on multiplayer games  Roll Eyes

XIII is imho almos perfect for a speedrun for the following reasons:
The PC-game uses the konsole saving system that means it's only possible to save level, ammo etc. and not the map progress. That means even if you play the game normally you need to will likely replay several levels. Also as soteos said the bossfights are reeeealy hard - i've beaten the game on "hard" and the bald guy (rascal i think) was a really hard nut.

PS: yes, I'm german, vogel  Grin

First cell-shade FPS, to be correct.

BTW: In which difficulty are you going to run with?

And phalloswogel: how did you know that he was german?
reallife speedrunner
probably looking at the name, lol.

i simply love the game... and the soundtrack..ahh. just don't get bored of it in the middle, i'm counting on you doing the run.

Hehe.. I didn't think that..
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
I'll try the game on "hard" but the difficulty won't affect the run much. As far as i know the only difference between normal and hard is how many hits the mobs can take and how accurate they shoot. But an arrow in the head or a chair on their backs will still finish them in an instant  Tongue

Unfortunately I can't start this week because my harddrive crashed and I'm still looking for a replacement.
At first I was very sad ... but on the other hand it's better that it crashed now and not when im 99% through the run  Roll Eyes
Discontinued Speedrunner
It sounds great with a XIII speedrun Grin
The game´s not that hard even when you first play it,  I noticed....

This is a great idea and I think I´m going to try myself if I get the time Grin
Question: how are you going to run those annoying sneaking parts?
I love YaBB 1G - SP1!
Do qou mean like the FBI-Building or the jungle camp? In the sneaking levels there are a lot of chairs and ashtrays you can smash on other peoples heads.
the jungle camp is a bit more difficult because there is less cover and also there are also no chairs  Roll Eyes but the soldiers can be killed without regard so i either have to finish them one by one and hide the corpses or (what i think is better) place one of them near an alarm button and use it as a decoy. when the soldier approches the alarm button he freezes for a second and makes a good sniper target Cheesy
Oh yeah, that's cool. Yes those were tha places I ment.
Bumbing because I'm going to attempt this run myself (now that my computer can run it smoothly).Onkel, are you still going for this?

Cool. I just want to ask- if you're recording with fraps, have you had any trouble with the sound not playing back?

Ok, I finally have time to start speedrunning this.

Soon you'll get some results, and maybe a video of the first segment. We'll see.
Oh and, what do you all think. Should I start recording when XIII wakes up at the beach (the very first scene). Or the scene after that (in that building where the girl gets shot)?
Hell yeah, do this run. Hope to see it soon. Cheesy
