World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck (World of Illusion - アイラブ ミッキー&ドナルド - ふしぎなマジックボックス?, "World of Illusion - I Love Mickey & Donald - The Mysterious Magical Box") is a Mega Drive/Genesis video game that was produced by Sega of Japan and released in 1992.
It is a semi-sequel to the previous games that Sega produced based on Walt Disney cartoon characters. In the game, Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck are sucked into a magical world, while preparing for a magic act. Now they must survive over a dozen different side-scrolling levels, in order to return home.

Hello SDA, my name is Kuin, and this happens to be one of my favorite games of all time. Some of my fondest memories of my childhood are of playing this game either alone, or with my parents or a friend.

I recently (after much practice, mind you) gained the ability to complete the game in one credit on an emulator without save states. I do indeed actually own the game, and I will be digging out my Genesis and my copy of the game this weekend.

I would like to attempt a speedrun of this game. My plan is to start with the Mickey run (much easier, imo) and then proceed to the Donald run. I (as of right now) do not have anyone who would do the co-op mode with me currently, but I may be trying to recruit someone.

For those of you who haven't played the game - Mickey, Donald, and Co-Op modes have different areas. I believe (not confirmed) that Donald has the longest route, although Co-Op has a lot of tedious rope climbing.

I've done very little research about bugs, tricks, and etc. for this run, so I'm hoping that any experts out there may have some suggestions. I will be beginning research on this shortly.

Anyway, I hope this gathers some interest. Again, this is one of my favorite games, and I'm sad to see that there isn't a speedrun of it on this website.

- Kuin

CURRENT STATUS
[Last Update: 4/2/11 1:27 EST]

- Refining all of Stage 1.
- Finding a way to defeat Boss 1 before he wastes time sitting around in invulnerable mode.
- Looking for another speedrun or TAS to use as reference for my route.
- Practicing Boss 3 - I currently take 3-4 damage in a winning attempt. My goal is 0-2.

DISCOVERIES
[Last Update: 4/2/11 1:28 EST]

- In Stage 1-1b and 1-2M, the flowers will not work if you are in invincibility frames.
- The time lost at the end of 1-2M if hit is actually about the same as using fireworks - although I would prefer to not get hit and not use fireworks (obviously).
- In Stage 2-3, the player will gain a lot of momentum if they run in the same direction as the moving cloud. <- (Could Be) A time saver

LIST OF LEVELS AND STATUS
Note: Statuses are subject to change if a glitch/trick is found.

Mickey

1-1 ~ Fine.
1-1b ~ Fine.
1-2M ~ Needs work towards the end, especially the horde of enemies guarding the flower.
1-3 ~ Fine. Dismounting the second spider could use work.
1-B ~ Finding a way to defeat it before it goes invincible.

2-1 ~ Relatively fine, although I have no planned route.
2-2M ~ I'm too defensive when it comes to the little fires. Working on that.
2-3 ~ Mastering the increased momentum from moving clouds, and trying riskier, but faster jumps.
2-B ~ Fine. Easiest boss in the game.

3-1 ~ Experimenting with ways to swim faster.
3-2M ~ Several issues. I take a lot of damage in the beginning, due to the falling rocks and opening/closing clams. The geysers cause me to waste time, as well.
3-3 ~ I get very defensive, similar to 2-2M. Working on memorizing the positions and timings of the blade-sharks.
3-B ~ Too much damage. There is no way for me (as of right now) to get here with full health without dying right before. Trying to reduce damage taken in this boss. This area will make or break a run.

I will continue the list as I master the earlier parts of the run.

Good choice! Smiley I played this game loads of times on my mega drive when I was younger. Infact just the other day my boyfriend got the game for me as a birthday present so I could speed run it Tongue and I was going to start with mickey first since he does look to be the easiest of the two characters. Unfortunately for me I don't own a genesis (which I heard is the best for speed running games, better than the mega drive), but my boyfriend does and I won't be seeing him for at least 2 months. By then I will be in Australia for several months so I would have plenty of time for speed running. I have a feeling you may beat me to it with the mickey run by the time I'm ready to record it, but I'm doing another speed run anyway first so heh Tongue Also when I go over to Australia me and mike89 will be attempting the co-op run of this game Shocked
Well, looks like we'll be rivals, then! Platformers are not my genre of choice, so you may have a bit of an upper hand, but I'll be sure not to make things easy for you. Cheesy
Hm a challenge sounds good Wink Well I need to finish my planning on the other speed run, then I will start planning on this game. You might also have a bit of an upper hand because, well like I said can't record till I'm over in Australia and I have other stuff going on too. However, when I'm over there I will have lots of time to speed run. So we'll have to see how it goes then Smiley

Oh. Whoops. I wasn't aware there was another thread, although I did do a search beforehand and it didn't come up.

Although the lack of updates since February is a little disheartening there.

Edit: However, this person's run and the information on that thread will come in handy.

Don't worry. I'm sure it really isn't too much of a big deal that there is another thread by this point. You should see how many Megaman threads there are.

Anyways, yeah the main reason I showed that to you is because it would come in handy for strategies. I hope to see a run of this from you. Good luck!

Oh, thanks!

I'll be able to get a lot of emulator practice starting tomorrow. Going to a conference thing with a lot of downtime, so much World of Illusion shall be had.

Hello there!

My run is not dead, just delayed.

http://lidholt.se/16.07.mp4 (right click, save as) this is an early emulator attempt.

I agree with you that Stage 3 will make or break the run. Which is abit troublesome as it is also the stage where taking damage can save most time... But if you watch my movie you will see that it is easy to beat the Shark quick without taking any damage.

Keep up the good work!

I do have some timesavers and routes to share but now I have to get back to work Smiley
Cheers!
Ah, nice to hear from you, Edenal!

I'm glad I'm not the only one with issues on stage 3. I'll be sure to watch your run later, although after watching the first couple of minutes, I can already see some differences - I really am quite defensive. xD;
Comments on Edenal's 16.07 run:

- Noticed a lack of the seesaw glitch in 1-1. However, I can't use that effectively yet, either.
- I let out a cry of "OH!" in 2-2M. I never thought of jumping down instead of riding the rocks.
- The beginning of 3-2 was beautiful, however, I think to be fully effective, a choreographed amount of damage to be taken here can be planned.
- Your Shark boss was beautiful. I always completely forgot about the fact that bosses have no hitbox (offensive or defensive) when flash-recovering.
- You can skip the jar area with the moving cubes in 4-1...? Hurr.
- The moving card platforms in 5-1 were beautiful. I have GOT to try that.
- Although, in the beginning of 5-1 I think you could have saved time by taking less damage and just killing the cards. That's just a guess, however.
- You only need to hit the 3 die at the end of 5-1? I've always hit 1-2-3. Well, there's a time-saver~
- Whoa. No damage in 5-2M. I'll have to study this part later.
- ...I never thought to just jump over the accordion men in 5-3 and 5-4.
- and a beautiful final boss.

Well, I've really got my work cut out for me, but thanks for showing me this, Edenal. Your run has really sparked some great ideas, and I think (key word: think) that we could get close to 15:30 (or lower!).

* This run was made before I have knew of it. I find it very hard to pull off effectively.

- I let out a cry of "OH!" in 2-2M. I never thought of jumping down instead of riding the rocks.
* Sometimes I die here if the block is not in that location. But 9 out of 10 times it's at the same place.
Sidenote: Stage 2-3 probably one of the best tries I've ever had aside from 0.5 seconds stopping on the cloud...

- The beginning of 3-2 was beautiful, however, I think to be fully effective, a choreographed amount of damage to be taken here can be planned.
* During my best tries I can skip all of the moving enemies without loosing time or taking damage. And during the first segment with spikes and clam-shells only take 2 hits. You can subtract at least 2 seconds from this area in a better attempt!

- Your Shark boss was beautiful. I always completely forgot about the fact that bosses have no hitbox (offensive or defensive) when flash-recovering.
* This is the tactic I use. Always the same pattern. But you need a bit of luck when he does the jump. :S

- You can skip the jar area with the moving cubes in 4-1...? Hurr.
* 4-1 is a really good stage here. But you can jump and keep momentum while riding the last slope to save even more time! And my 4-2 is totally SHIT!

- The moving card platforms in 5-1 were beautiful. I have GOT to try that.

- Although, in the beginning of 5-1 I think you could have saved time by taking less damage and just killing the cards. That's just a guess, however.
* Don't have any good tactic here. Sad

- You only need to hit the 3 die at the end of 5-1? I've always hit 1-2-3. Well, there's a time-saver~
* Yep! Always the same for Mickey!

- Whoa. No damage in 5-2M. I'll have to study this part later.
* Yeah. I can do that 4 out of 5 times. You only need to time the candles right.

- ...I never thought to just jump over the accordion men in 5-3 and 5-4.
* Timing was pretty hard for me. But I worked it out. Think my final strategy is even better. I will record that later!

- and a beautiful final boss.

I'm glad that I could help you. It's a delight for me aswell that you are speedrunning this game.
I am confident that that run can be improved by 20-30 seconds.

I will try to get back on the horse and practice now when my computer is up and running again.

Good luck mate!

Just thought it was time for an update!

I'm back at running the game. Attempts are going fine. But still waiting for that sub 16 min!

Got a capture card but no NTSC-Genesis. Might ending up doing the run on my PAL-MegaDrive instead. Meanwhile I will try to stream attempts on Justin.tv. (http://www.justin.tv/lidholt)

Cheers
I just wanted to throw in here that I loved this game as a kid, and have constantly been sad that there is no run posted on SDA. Can't wait to see one!

Figured I would update this thread a bit with progress.
The video above shows my most recent (and best) run. Even though I screw up on the final boss. I do damage him before I die. Smiley
It shows some new tricks I've found and overall improvement on the execution.

Time to update this thread.

I've now successfully completed my Mickey run. Sometime in the future I will start making a run as Donald, but right now I need a few weeks off this game.

A small timesaver I've found is that you can increase you forward movement if you jump right at any ledge, this small boost is extreamly useful in stage 3 where you can gain enough ground to land on the first two clamshells before they open. It is possible to land the three last aswell, but it's unrealiable.

Futhermore some bosspatterns change. I've found that you can manipluate this by hard-resets between tries. (Not fullproof, but the first few runs after a long hard-reset are always the same). This really only affects the Spider boss and saves over a second, and the platform in 2-2 which makes or breaks the run with my current tactics.

Flyingfox: You still working on a run?
