This is something I wrote up on a pastebin but decided to also post here. I'm not entirely sure where to post this since this does not apply to any one individual game and could potentially have applications outside of speedrunning. Also note, I'm not the best with terminology, if somebody feels like rewriting this with a better grasp on terminology go ahead and send me a pm or something and I'll update this post with changes:

The Wii U VC appears to have some sort of memory issue that should be looked into further.

A few months ago, after losing a run while playing Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga on Wii U VC, altabiscuit loaded a practice restore point and tried to intentionally crash the game. However, instead it booted up the mario bros. game that you normally access from the main menu and is not a part of the main game: http://www.twitch.tv/altabiscuit/v/3690630

Upon using a restore point he was able to somewhat consistently get the game to boot mario bros. However, the next day, after shutting off the game, he could not replicate this, not even with the same restore point.

The glitch that normally crashes the game had notable differences between console and vc. On emulator at most it reset the game. It turns out however, that was exactly what happened. A tasvideos post explains that the game traditionally enters mario bros. when the game is reset with a value in a specific location: http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=398894#398894

It was unable to be determined what caused this value to get set in the first place and why the value was no longer set despite using the same restore point. It was theorized that it may be a freak wii u vc glitch, but no further research was done.

Flash forward to april 18th and there is a post on the speedrunning reddit about the cloud glitch in super mario world. http://www.reddit.com/r/speedrun/comments/331g24/smw_cloud_glitch_works_on_wii_u_virtual_console/

Usually the game crashes when attempting the cloud glitch on wii u vc, however in one occasion, the glitch worked without crashing and did not work after using a restore point nor after resetting wii u vc. In addition, he states that there are patterns with how the game crashes. The post theorizes external factors might be affecting RAM external to the allocation of that for the emulator.

Based on these occurrences, it appears that restore points do not retain all memory values that could affect extremely memory reliant glitches such as what was happening in mario & luigi and smw. In addition external factors could possibly influence wii u vc memory. I'm not sure on the potential applications of this, but it is definitely something that should be researched and kept in mind when dealing with glitches on wii u vc.

EDIT: Another post on reddit furthers the notion that it external factors can affect wii u vc: http://www.reddit.com/r/speedrun/comments/331g24/smw_cloud_glitch_works_on_wii_u_virtual_console/cqgvc7d
